Re: NTL's Conflict Of Interests With Other IP Based Services - ANTI COMPETITIVE ?
I understand some of the forum members disagree with my comments and I accept that.
I am simply raising my concerns and asking a questions which I thought the forum community would like to discuss as I feel sooner or later it will be an issue which will effect us. I am not discussing which services are provided by various ISP's, but if a Company who provides multiple services to my home can remain impartial and continue to provide a constant, reliable service for which I am paying for, regardless if the content conflicts with products provided by themselves. |
Re: NTL's Conflict Of Interests With Other IP Based Services - ANTI COMPETITIVE ?
but who knows what NTL may be able to offer then?
hehehe if ntl are still around...and all their customers have not left. People talk and recommendations for one ISP over another change, I used to recommend ntl for broadband every time, not anymore tho its too expensive and restrictive, ADSL is now the way forward for all my recommendations. |

Im not asking what services NTL will offer in the future, but as stated above ^^^ Can they offer an impartial service? Services they offer in the future would not have any Effect on if they can offer an impartial service. |

No company offers an 'impartial' service, they offer their own service. Ask any telecomms company whose service is the best for you, and they'll tell you it's theirs! ntl are under no obligation to be impartial, nor are BT, OneTel, TalkTalk, Sky, or anybody else. ntl's network is not public property, nor is it *former* public property, like BT's. It was built with private money, and therefore the company are at liberty to maximise their return on that. Being fair to other providers and/or services doesn't come into it. |

Of course they wont, but hopefully they'll be smart enough to try and find a middle ground where they can provide a service that is attractive to enough people to make the share holders a nice tidy return on their investment. Which really is what it boils down to. As Scrotnig says its market forces that will drive the issue, ntl along with every other company will attempt to screw the maximum possible profit out of the customer. I would love cheaper broadband with no limits on what you can do with it but its not gonna happen in a capitalist society, an unfortunate fact of life. |
Re: NTL's Conflict Of Interests With Other IP Based Services - ANTI COMPETITIVE ?
Fair comment, but I do feel as though the point of the thread as become slightly lost.
I was not mentioning the costs of my broadband, or what limits they impose but would they stop me looking at one thing, then saying "but you can look at ours". It just seems odd. The internet is meant to be an "Open" playing field, not some barracaded "Secret Garden" which is only accessible by a priviliged few as people who have a "Dedicated ISP" such as Force9, Pipex etc will not have such restrictions as they do not have mixed interests. |

Re: NTL's Conflict Of Interests With Other IP Based Services - ANTI COMPETITIVE ?
It all boils down to:
You decide what you want and the price you are willing to pay. You see who can provide your requirements. You choose what you believe most closely meets your requirements and price. There is no conflict of interest because NTL provide internet, TV and phone. Companies like Homechoice are in exactly the same position. If you think NTL are anti-competitive don't use them, no one is forcing you to. |
