...will be able to fast-forward and rewind programmes
Is that what vod will actually allow? I thought that was a feature in pvr's court.

you will be able to rewind and fforward VOD content, and pause it, and stop it and then return later in the day.
very flexible. but you'd need a PVR to pause, rewind live broadcast tv.

No, VOD does not let you "download" anything and will work through your current STB. Just think of it like pay-per-view movies but with the added features of being able to choose exactly when you want to start watching and being able to pause, rewind, etc. whilst watching.

ntl VOD will feature "catch up tv" which is the FREE section. It will feature the top programs off tv, from the past 24 hours (or the past week) and you will view it, e.g you miss yesterdays corrie?...select and watch...and pause...and rewind.

great that just the sort of service NTL should be offering to showcase the benefits of cable over sat TV

But nobody really knows what programmes are going to be on this service, if it is Corrie, Stenders, etc. then it will be very popular (and I hope they do not start charging for it) if it is not then there will be a limited audience. There is no guarantee that your favourite TV programme will be included so it is not as good as a true PVR.

Channel 4 have stuff on Homechoice apparently, so there's a good chance this will appear on cable too. It all depends on what deals the On Demand people can strike (they're responsible for the content, not NTL or Telewest).

ntl confirms January VOD launch

I guess this would be because of the time it will take to upgrade areas that have poor cable to the door.

Re: "VOD from January 18th" -- Digitalspy

Not that so much - the length of time it takes to install all the equipment and ensure all the myriad types of STB work properly with the new software is the main kicker, although the latter at least only has to be done once. You do need good quality cable though, so there's a fair bit of effort in that direction, too before you can launch. Add in the fact that we still have three billing systems and you're not talking easy.

Odd to be able to talk about it now - hope it works!
