Glad it's resolved. One day someone will come up with a neat system of wiring that gets rid of all this confusing spaghetti behind our TV, hifi, VCR, DVD, STB, Games Console, and any other toys we mght have. Untill then we all continue to have nightmares about plugging our gadgets in.

Mmmmmm....

Imagine a lounge with only one remote control; where every piece of AV equipment connects to a single point with one small lead; where every menu has the same look-and-feel...

It could all be available now using exisiting technology but for one thing - it's so simple that big business would find it difficult to take control over it. Consequently, there's no one around to push the concept.

Every piece of equipment: TVs, DVD players, STBs even radios could be connected together using CAT5 ethernet cable or, where necessary, WiFi wireless. At the centre would be a switch that supports multicast packet routing. Devices with a screen, like TVs, would have an embedded browser which defaults to the client list of the DHCP sever (probably hosted in the switch). Click on a client 'button' and the browser would be transferred to the webpage maintained by that piece of equipment. On that page would be all the controls for that device. Dead simple.

From your sofa you could surf to any device in your house using a single infra-red mouse. Or do the same from your PC. Or, assuming you had a broadband connection, you could surf from anywhere in the world and set up say your PVR.

All this technology would be easy fairly to implement if the world agreed on a single open standard. But if that ever happens I'll eat my hat!

Am new to ntl, this forum and to the world of cable in general. Need some help with the wiring side of things. Altis, you supplied a very helpful diagram and I wondered if you, or anyone else, can just expand on it slightly for me. Recording is working great; my problem is I have to unplug one of the scarts everytime I want to want a DVD. The back of my TV isn't exactly accessible and I'm sure all I need is another scart lead. Just not sure where to put it! I think I must need some sort of double adaptor. This is probably easy stuff for many of you but I'm at my wits end.

yup, I have the same problem - only one scart input on the tv & need to plug VCR & DVD player in. I use a double scart adapter - Asda do them for £9.99 IIRC, the only hassle is having to push the button to toggle between the 2 inputs. This is far less trouble than swapping leads all the time, though.

If your TV has more than one scart socket then use one for the DVD player. If your DVD player has 2 scart sockets then pop it in the line between the STB and the TV. Failing that look for a second one on the VCR and hook up the DVD to that instead.
