Re: Slow in Guildford
Im also in the guildford error and ther does sems to be a fault relating to the new servers they put in;
| | | (private use) | | 1 | | 192.168.1.1 | - | ... | | 0 | x | (private use) | | 2 | 10 | 10.252.183.254 | - | ... | | 1209 | -x | (private use) | | 3 | | 80.4.30.149 | glfd-t2cam1-b-v105.inet.ntl.com | - | | 1205 | -x | 80.4.30.0 | | 4 | | 62.254.207.165 | glfd-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com | - | | 1221 | -x | NTL Internet just look at that godamm ping 1200ms and thats good atm.. been high as 3000ms.. when u consider im like 3 miles from there servers. Ntl should sort ther act out otherwise ill be swapping to 2mbit adsl as im only 1 mile from exchange p hmm maybe its me.. well its ntls equipment so... Cable Modem Configuration Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem Cable modem : Ambit Cable Modem MAC address : u wish IP address : 10.252.181.135 Downstream Receive Power Level : -3.64 dBmv ??????? Downstream SNR : 33.57 dB Upstream Transmit Power Level : 42.75 dBmv anyone shed light on this config? |
Re: Slow in Guildford
dBmvDownstream SNR : 23.68 dB <<< that is unacceptable, minimum specification for this is 24dB, and I mean minimum.
Upstream x-mit power is fine though. Enjoy the engineer's visit. |

Yup, all fine, thanks. Will check your modem when I have time, don't worry about giving me a MAC address the internal IP you've provided will be fine ;) |
Re: Slow in Guildford
a engineer did fit a filter on the line at 1 point when i was having dropout problems was later diagnosed as a chipset conflict usb vs amd and the ntl100 so i removed it.. me looks for filter lol
'80.4.30.149' was found in 3 hops (TTL=253). But, problems starting at hop 2 in network "(private use)" are causing IP packets to be dropped. |
Re: Slow in Guildford
eventually I got through to a second line engineer in cardif
he was particularly concerned with my fluctuating s/n and high pacet loss and I will be having an engineer's vist in the near future will post back thanks for your help wee willie |
Re: Slow in Guildford
have had the engineer round
he found no fault at my site but concluded there was a network fault the network engineer came out on thursday, cleaned the connectors for a slight snr improvement and detected faults up the network. As of tonight, friday, my speeds are now @ 700k, very much better than before, but a long way short of 1.5mb how do I progress with the network engineer/fault dept, no one has given me any contact details |
Re: Slow in Guildford
I've been in touch with engineers today
snr still 23-26 they insist there arent any network problems did a download test from tucows whilst they were on the phone and obtained 84 Kb/s whereas they said I should be on 177/187 hence half of my supposed 1.5mb bandwidth there was only 22% utilisation on the line they say there may be a '10% loss due to my pc' where they get there info from I am unsure contacted my network support company and he disagrees that there is anything here causing a problem how do I fix this? answers on a postcard............... wee willie |

when you say network support company , what exactly do you mean by that ????? :) |
Re: Slow in Guildford
Have you tried using a different webcache?
|
Re: Slow in Guildford

I referred to them today to see if there was any validity in ntl's ascertions that my setup was causing a slow down |
Re: Slow in Guildford

I'll give that a go tomorrow, but 99 ntl tech's so far have never suggested it |
Re: Slow in Guildford
the cach change didn't have any effect
after the ntl network work was done I was able to get occasional speeds of 100k but my dan ewells speed test show 750 nto 1500 download speeds (excuse my lack of knowledge re the units) but I also seem to have more than my fare share of packet loss when I've got some time to spare I'll persevere with ntl's tech support again |
Re: Slow in Guildford
Finally had the matter solved and for the first time I have 1.5mb speeds
the engineer was very good he found that when ntl changed out my old cmx modem, they didnt change the power supply, which effectively fried the new modem this was replaced as was the ps o/side, the box was letting in water which the engineer has asked to be fixed (the previous engineer, 2 wks ago said similar things, but nothing happened) will keep my fingers crossed the previous engineer did put in a new cable connector BUT he inserted into a naff/rusty part of the box low and behold new modem + psupply new connector housed properly and voila all finally solved its taken c 2 months to sort this |
