Re: smtp.ntlworld.com down ?

Right,

If thats the case... does anyone have any "tips" on managing to change the smtp server, maybe to one that allows relaying?

I have accounts with different providers, but because I'm on ntl broadband, have to use their smtp server. I'm a bit miffed because I've got a college assignment to email in that should have been in last week.

Am I going to have to attempt to use a dialup account?

I thought ntl had a super-duper email system now that they "upgraded" it??!!!

Do you have a yahoo account that you could send the assignment through? As they now allow 10Mb attachments.

Re: Email Error & Opera?

Probably they are freeing up diskspace and its getting used up as quick as they are freeing it? :D

I've been getting the same message and outlook tells me the messages haven't gone but my emails are getting through - I sent one eight times before I realised!
This is all very confusing and I hope ntl get it sorted soon

Because it is an intermittent problem.

Intermittent it may be but it leaves the mail in the outbox every time leading you to think it hasn't gone when it has.

New Message NOW!!!

****@ntlworld.com
Sending e-mail failed. Maybe the SMTP server is not set up properly? E-mail queued.

maybe if they had anti-spam and av software then half the mails NTL get could be deleted and we wouldn't be in this mess

It's even worse than that SOME emails are getting through, and SOME are not. I've had to start BCCing myself to find out which.

Anyone know where I can buy a carrier pigeon cheap?! :(

Re: Email Error & Opera?

AFAIK, "the smtp server" is actually a collection of servers so I would guess that only one is broken, therefore the fault is intermittant depending on which one you get. Of course, this may be wrong, because if it were true then you might wonder why the duffer is still in service .... :erm:

Edit: I have merged the three topic on this that I could find.

Re: [merged] NTL SMTP : 452 File System Error

I'm getting multiple copies of the same e mail (i.e. 15 copies of the same thing, all timed slightly differently). Is this connected with the 452 File System Error or something else? The same number of copies are also being forwarded to my Yahoo account.

Solution for Mac Users

Mac OS X has its own smtp server built-in, but it is turned off by default.

Users on version 10.2 ("Jaguar") or earlier need to download a utility called Sendmail Enabler; users on 10.3 ("Panther") need Postfix Enabler.

Once you've set-up Sendmail or Postfix and enabled it you can send mail directly from your own machine to the recipient without going via NTL's mail servers. It takes about 2 minutes to do the download, config and set-up, so it's well worth the effort.

Re: [merged] NTL SMTP : 452 File System Error

There is a freeware SMTP server from www.softstack.com which runs on your PC, which can be used to bypass the flaky NTL one. Seems to work OK as far as I can see.
