Re: Altitude?

Based on the Streetmap thing, you are almost exactly over the 50m above line.

There are contour lines on the map with the height above sea level somewhere along the line. On the map that I linked there is the 40 and 50 metre countour lines near the bottom left hand corner.

Height and Relief on OS maps.

There are two main ways of showing height on OS maps :

1. Contour Lines
2. Spot Heights

All points along a contour line are at the same height. On 1:50 000 and 1:25 000 maps, the lines go up in tens, and the 50 and 100 metre lines are in bold.

On OS maps, the tops of the numbers always point upslope, so you should know which way is up, even if you can only see one number (Note this is not always the case on black and white maps in exam papers - use your common sense)

Remember the closer the contour lines, the steeper the slope.

Other less sensible options.

Book a flight on Easyjet, wait until you reached cruising altitude and set it to 7000 ft.

You could have gone to the river bank and set it to 0.

You could have hopped a train to Dover and set it to 0.

No I didn't the plane is pressurised to 7000ft, cruising altitude is anything from 20 - 40k ft. So once at pressure you can safely set your watch to 7000 ft as that is where the cabin is pressurised to.

Neat link http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mirabilevisu/cpcs.htm

>>> Which is why you can never get a good cup of tea on a plane as the water boils at below 100 deg C, and why you get drunk quicker.
