I have tried to upload my website with an FTP client, but according to the log shown below I cannot get access. I have tried my current password & what was I believe my original one, which was written down on the installation disk.

Any ideas

Though I think I know quite a lot, my knowledge seems to have gone backwards of late.

I see mention of proxy server mentioned on this site, and I am not sure if I have set up my pc to use them or not, can someone point me in the right direction to ascertain if I am or not.

Also why does using a proxy server make a difference?

Hi,

Without going into the argument of whether proxies are better or worse.

To check whether you have a proxy in use for your browser, then open your browser and choose tools then internet options then connections and then lan settings.

If there is a tick next to use a proxy server then you have at some point manually selected it.

Full information from the master can be found here

There's a passive FTP option available that can sometimes foul things up and cause seemingly weird behaviour. Just thought I'd mention it :D

Proxies shouldn't be an issue with FTP.

Re: Could someone help me with webspace

In answer to my previous posts, I know I am not using a proxy, and I knew how to find out if I was using a proxy, but thought it was another type of proxy everyone was referring to.

 Anyhow, I managed to upload to my directory, using upload.dtn.ntl.com\username and my current password.

A couple of questions: -

1) Do I access my homepage at homepage.ntlworld.com\username? as I believe. If so I cannot access it and receive the following:-

the page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelt correctly.
Click the Back button to try another link.
HTTP 404 - File not found

2) The above problem, may be due to the website design, as the website my wife designed in word2000 creates a default.htm, which I believe should be OK. Does anyone have any ideas?

We are only trying for a fairly basic site at the moment with photos etc, before we move onto something more adventurous :erm:

Hi,

Sorry about the confusion over proxies.

Stick around and i am sure someone from Support and in the know of the current set up will help and confirm.

From memory the the dtn.ntl.com were the addresses given prior to the ntlworld.com being used.

Now i know they migrated all of the email addresses over by way of aliases.

I.E. that is if they mail your dtn.ntl address it auto redirects to to the ntl world address.

Not 100% sure what the score is for web space though.

Although logically i would have thought if you can up upload via dtn.ntl then when viewing the dtn.ntl address should either display or re direct to the ntl world address.

Maybe it is the other way around though as you say you cannot access the uploads via ntlworld.com

What happens though if you upload to ntlworld.com, can you see it then by entering for example www.homepage.ntlworld.com\username?12324

The ?1234 will refresh and load the new page and bypass the transparent web cache.

As i siad earlier maybe one of the many Techies with access to your records will drop in and pick up on this and confirm which web space address is valid.

;)

;)

I tried the above and still receive the same error.

I tried uploading to ntlworld.com, but can get no access.

This is making what should be a very easy task seem very difficult

to work properly the file should be named index.htm
