Re: Windows temp folder

Update!

Big thanks to Paul & Pem for the ideaâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s.
I went with Pemââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s solution and the job was completed within seconds.

I ran Scan disk straight after and could not find any errors. Defrag was another matter, it took 3 ½ hrs to complete on a 10 gig hard drive.

Maybe I should have reformated, it would have saved alot of time.

Again thanks for all your help!!

Dan.

The solution is to make a backup of your autoexec.bat before you restart in dos mode (luckily I'd made a backup) and copy the backup back onto your autoexec.bat, then reboot, and during the reboot procedure it gives the option to restart in normal mode. Maybe my pc is just weird or maybe there's a simple command or keypress to restart in normal mode?

When it's in DOS - can't you just type 'exit' and press enter for it to return to windows?

was anything running when you tried to defrag ????????? , if it was then maybe that was why it took so long to do it :)

Both the defrag and scandisk was run from Safe mode as I had to delete a few start up files from the system32 folder.

Why don't you try a reformat might be the best thing.

You know its frightening how many people have computers yet don't know the basics. In fact on another board I visit there's a yank member there who act's like they know everything. On there IRC channel though they had to be told about Spybot. She tried Spybot out and it found 400 items plus 4 servu daemons. She said well thats not too bad is it:Yikes:

3.5hrs is about right for an old 10GB hard drive, especially if it's that fragmented.

I still have to help my parents sometimes. Anyone know of any good tutorial software that can teach the basics?
