Mine is great. They're letting me transfer to work from their Glasgow office so we can bring up our family with a little more support from our extended families. This is despite the significant hassle and cost involved for them.

I have seen many a company where the upper management have been too busy building their empires, sucking up to their seniors and backstabbing everyone that appeared to be a possible threat to their progression in the company that working for them was hell.

I could never understand their idea that they always wanted their superiors to see a perfect workplace with no problems anywhere within it. I have seen these people waste a couple of days getting staff to make sure that the workplace was perfect with not a speck of dust to be seen and in so doing neglecting the work which should be being done when a director or very senior manager was due to call. Vans have been hired to temporarily move potentially embarassing objects out of view of these important visitors. Staff have been cut to such a level that work and staff morale suffered to make their budget prerformance appear better. My own view on all this is that hiding the real situation never makes it likely that improvements come about.

NTL is probably a little like this with the very top management not really being aware of the true situation of the company below their level and possibly not caring as long as their fat wage packets keep arriving.

With radio, as in any broadcasting medium, the nature of the beast is the whole thing can change at the last minute - I could turn up for work one night and be told I'm not needed any more. A lot of people may object to those conditions but if this industry is what you want to get in to then it's what you put up with. Luckily my bosses are known for giving lots of chances so if things went down the pan I like to think I won't be out on my arse straight away.

I think if you work in a big company, whether it's good or not depends on your line management.

The Uni where I work is quite large, but in general they are a good company to work for. My boss is brilliant. As long as I do my job thoroughly, I actually get a fair amount of freedom to do my own things with Uni facilities. I also got a month off recently because of my mum dying, and it was put down as compassionate leave (although I would be p**ed off if it was taken off my Holiday).

This contrasts well with the previous company I worked for (a small Freight Forwarders). At the time I worked for them, my Grandfather was dying of cancer. He had a Hospital appointment at Guys which was just down the road. I offered to help my mum get him from London Bridge station to the hospital. I explained the situation to my Boss, asked for an extended lunchbreak to give me time, and was refused.

I also know people there who have crap line managers, and think working for the Uni is terrible.
