http://www.google.com

They don't do hosting, but are good at searching for peeps that do.

MadGamer 25-08-2003 14:00

Still stuck on which host to choose can anyone help?

(For a Forum)

Russ 25-08-2003 14:16

Did you try ezboard?

poolking 25-08-2003 14:17

Go to review sites like these:

www.webhostingtalk.com
www.yourhostsucks.com
www.webhostingratings.com
www.freewebspace.net

MadGamer 25-08-2003 14:22

These are all ok but i want to host a forum like the one i had from proboards.com but with out the pop ups and the banner ads and of course i want one for FREE :D :D :D :D

You will not get anything like that without paying.

So you are going to have a little reality check and start look at host between $5.95 and $6.95 a month or a very cheap yearly host.

Another word of advice, don't register your domain name with your host, if you part on bad terms they could hold your domain name to ransom.

Stuart W 25-08-2003 14:30

You can find free boards hosted by other companies, but you will have to suffer adertising on them....

Just go for one with banner adds NOT popups.

Oh, and use Google more, you seem to be asking for stuff that comes up on the first result of google!

MadGamer 25-08-2003 14:39

Could you give me an example of what i would type in?

MadGamer 25-08-2003 14:40

The one ive got at the moment hasn't got pop ups but it has got banner ads

Stuart W 25-08-2003 14:43

What, your ProBoards one??

That opens a new browser with every add, about 1 every 3 clicks on the site!!

That is pop-up ads.

Banner adds are the ones that just sit on the page you are looking at.

MadGamer 25-08-2003 14:46

Could you give me an example of what i would type in?

on google for the forums

Stuart W 25-08-2003 14:55

free board

That came up with:
http://www.ezboard.com/
http://www.boards2go.com/
http://www.discusware.com/index.php

on the first page alone.

MadGamer 25-08-2003 15:24

I registered on www.boards2go.com, but i was wondering how i start threads?

MadGamer 25-08-2003 15:37

Forget about the post above

MadGamer 25-08-2003 16:05

I registered on Dream Tools for the forum

MadGamer 25-08-2003 16:07

There is just ONE banner ad for upgrading but i won't bother with that

It all seemed fine to me ;)

MadGamer 26-08-2003 18:14

check ya Pm's m8

Stuart W 26-08-2003 19:51

I run my board so that visitors can see the most usefull forums without registering.

Once registered, they get access to more forums.

That way, people can post anonymously to ask for advice, if they like what they see, they can sign up and be part of the StusPlace community. If they just want a bit of help with something there's no need to sign up.

This means all the members are members because they wanted to be, not because they had to register to post.

Forum is looking nice mate, but that front page is pretty dire!

As you now have V1.2 why don't you use the IP Dynamic Lite option from the Admin panel?

It's easy to set up and will give you a nice looking front page ;)

This is my IP Dynamic Lite page, compared to this, which is the Blogg for my site!

Either one looks better than a text link

If you have problems setting up IP Dynamic Lite, PM me, or post on my forums & I'll walk you through it :D
FYI, you don't need to register to post in the help sections ;)

Hey, that's much better!!

Sorry, I didn;'t mean to be having a go, it's just that whenever I see a 'standard' bulletin board / forum it makes me want to scream from the hilltops "GET A SKIN!!" :D

The skin you have chosen (from bbskins.org?) is a nice one, I used to use a similar one for that XP kinda look, but it had many many bugs in it, including no-popups!

I have since changed to a vBulettin kind of look. I'm still hacking it about and making subtle changes, but I am the kind of person to be constantly updating / refining anyway!

BTW, I am using version 1.3, though it is not 'released' yet, it is still in beta stages, it is very good!

Not sure what you mean...

You can download it and install it, or you can use the on-line 'test' one.
The test one will give you access to the admin panel as if it was your own, so you can try most things out.

here is a link to the demo forum. Log in as admin with the passord admin to get access to the admin and mod panels.

But, to just access a IB forum, you don't need to download anything.

Nice!! ;)

Yes, the two are related, it's down to cookies.

Richard M 25-10-2003 11:52

Re: Promote your own website

Read the instructions, it's dead easy. :)
Just make sure that you have a MySQL database created for the forum (you will need to write down the details for the install script).

Stuart W 25-10-2003 12:10

Re: Promote your own website

It is indeed easy.

You just need to upload the files, CHMOD a couple of files & dir's, create a MySQL database and you are away.

IBS include an install php script which walks you through everything.

MadGamer 25-10-2003 12:16

Re: Promote your own website

MySQL is this included with the board?

No, you need web hosting with PHP (v4+) and MySQL.

I'd also recommend you get the MySQL control centre to aid you with administration...

If you rent some webspace you usually get PHP & mySQL. Free webspace that comes with ISP accounts usually doesn't have these. Suitable webspace is inexpensive these days, starting from around £15 - £25 a year (depending on vendor) for a small amount of bandwidth and if you don't want your own domain.

You can install a webserver, PHP, mySQL & bulletin board on your home computer, but of course others could only use it when your computers connected to the internet. It's worth doing this anyway, if you intend to rent some PHP enabled webspace as it allows you to try stuff out without spending any money. Try to find a install version that installs a webserver (e.g. Apache), PHP and mySQL all at once, as this will save you having to do some manual configuration.

/edit I was typing too slow again :)

Contact King Pheonix from here or go through the link in his sig.

He does a nthw member package for 99p per month link to his site.

100mb wed space
2000mb bandwidth
1 SQL database

Can't fault it :)

Also has a program called fantastico that auto installs software into the space such as Invision power board.

Mine I have done with this here.

Fully reccomend his hosting, happy customer.

I'd seriously consider resizing that logo, picking different colours, choosing a better font that Times New Roman and setting different colours for your hyperlinks. You also managed to lay out your content-type and DTD tags in exactly the same order as Dreamweaver does them .. spooky ;)

Hi Wayne

dunno how to do the 'clickable thumbnail' bit, but as a general comment, the file sizes of the images you have up atm are rather large. It's bearable on my 600k connection, but anyone on dialup is going to take ages to load the pages. :)
