AS long as they dont take the download down, because arent they supposed to be limiting the beta?

I'm tempted to just get the DVD, save a lot of time and effort, just the small cost of it..

I managed to download it the morning it came out successfully on my laptop which has its hard drive formatted in FAT32 (the download was very slow though at 100-200k on my 10meg line)

Upto 31% after only one day (started downloading yesterday).

Should be ready to test by about Tuesday, or Monday if I'm lucky.

I gave in and bought one of the DVD'S, knowing my luck the download will probably work totally fine tomorrow, but at least its done, and id assume i could give the DVD to other people as long as they've got a CD serial key?

So hopefully it doesn't take that long to arrive!

So did anyone actually get a working copy of Vista ?? Considering all the probs we've been getting with the download, I'd be very surprised.

Does this bode well for Vista if they can't even get the downloads working properly ?

I know... High demand etc..... but let's face it, wasn't that to be expected ?

Yes there's the option of buying the DVD, I just wonder how long it would take for that to arrive in the post !!!

All in all, I think it's a pretty poor show from MS...

I'll just keep an eye out in other places for the download, after all it's free and I'm sure some other company will host it. If anyone finds a reliable source let me know please...

512K I think. Left it on "Unlimited" mode overnight last night (means other web stuff stops working) and it has leapt upto 85%!!!!

If I can just keep my son off Runescape for long enough, it should finish soon I hope! :)

Stuart, sorry you feel that my information related to me telling people how to download pirate software. I will never encourage the collection of illegal material. The point has been made and we will move on ;)

On other points, I managed to get the Vista build downloaded form the M$ site no problems. I used Free Download Manager just incase it stopped half way but seemed to run through no worries. Installed no bother although i do think it took a couple hours (i did an upgrade - after a full system backup!). Looks nice and works pretty well - although is rather slow still but hey its beta. Don't try and do loads of things at the same time as it does seem to get rather confused. There are a lot of programs that still wont work but have to say 90% of what I use does.

And if you do get it installed press windowskey + Tab (scoll with the mouse)

How cool is that ;)

I managed to get the download from the link on the right of the download page.
Made it in one download, as speed was excellent. Burnt it to disc, twice as Nero found an error when checking first burn, and then got ready to install.
Moved all files off the drive I wanted to use and then set it to master and formatted it.
Have given up after 9 attempts with always the same error - Error Code 80070241. Have done a Google and checked the Vista forums and seems for some of the downloads the ISO is no good and gives this error.
Have given up with it for now, especially as I am using a Vista lookalike on my XP.
May try in a few days again but is too time consuming for something that will not install.

LOL, sounds interesting.

Well I must say I didn't want to admit defeat with the download, so I tried again about an hour ago, it's downloading !! At 33% now and around 160 to 200kb/s......

Fingers crossed it will download ok, then comes the really interesting part.. installing it. If it doesn't work, well backup dvd's are ready just in case...

I used this download manager yesterday and got full speed the whole time.

Got it installed using Daemon Tools but went back to XP as I think you'd need a least 1GB of memory.

Apparently some are downloading this ok, but I've tried to get it through IE, Firefox and several download managers, all to no avail

well finally got it downloaded and started install on my spare 80GB drive. Gets 89% through install then gives error 80070241. It appears many people have been getting this . Seems to be something to do with the download itsslef or when burning the DVD. Am going to download again and burn at a slower speed to see if I can get it installed.

downloaded again and burnt to DVD at 2x. Got it installed and its pretty cool. Only problem is can't find drivers for my USB2 card and audio card.

Seems pretty stable and everything works ok. My major problem is that I can't get the media extender functions to work with my 360, just get a message that the Disc is the wrong region.

The Media Centre Extender is not fully functional in this release. Microsoft have announced that the fully functional MCE will be beta tested later, and currently, only in the US. Presumably, they will be testing it in other countries at some point, they just haven't announced dates yet.

I have heard of a few people getting the same error at differnt stage of the install. Try downloading the ISO file again and burning it to DVD at a really slow speed.

I did that after getting the error at 94%. Burning at 2x seems to have fixed it for me. I think the fast speed corrupts some of the files.

I have got it downloaded and installed, is anyone having problems with their wireless networking when using Vista? The network card in my laptop doesn't like Vista and although it shows the network and tries to connect it fails each time so I am using a USB adapter but it disconnects all the time.

I ended up downloading the 32-bit version as when I download the 64-bit version I always end up with a 13-14MB file which obviously is wrong. I will try 64-bit again later with --ignore-size from my Linux box on wget and see if that makes a difference but for now, the 32-bit version has better compatibility anyways

64-bit or 32-bit?

littld 13-06-2006 17:48

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

32 bit, install is complete.

A few teething issues - seemed to attack the hard disk for a while and then calm down (I think it was building search index).

It didn't like the default Nvidia driver, but one from the Nvidia website is okay.

Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard don't like working through usb hub (crashed on every video I played until I worked this out).

Not sure if you care, but I've jotted down my first impressions for you:

- It looks nice, better than the "similar" themes available for XP
- The Start menu is much, much better and I really like it
- It is fairly fast compared to what I was expecting, and quite stable
- Window animations are nice, not sure if I'll get bored of them
- Getting around Explorer takes some getting used to - difficult to locate things when you're used to XP
- No idea whether I can use this as my main OS but I will install a few things and try

Legorol 13-06-2006 18:21

Corrupted size (13.7 Mb) for 64-bit version, look here

For those of you trying to download the 64-bit version and getting a download size of 13.7 Mb, the cause is what I beleive to be a fault in NTL's proxy servers. See the following two posts I have made about this issue:

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=469703
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...d.php?p=760411

The bottom line is, NTL's transparent proxies can't handle a download of this size (greater than about 4 Gb). Doesn't matter what browser or download manager you are using. Since NTL customers are forced to go through the transparent proxies, we are in trouble.

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

I've been trying to download the 32bit edition for several days...

At first I tried using the MS download manager (in both IE7 and Firefox) but that never even connected to the remote file. Then I tried the direct ISO, in Firefox, which got to ~1.99GB before saying it was "completed". Upon examining the ISO, it had the text file which has previously been mentioned, but nothing else...

Now I've tried several times using FlashGet, which is at least seeing the correct total size (3,276,952KB) . The official MS ISO location stopped after 60% yesterday, and when I forced it to resume continually said "Error Occured!" after "Content-Range: Bytes *****" in the transfer window. Eventually it started recieving again, this morning, but stopped at 64% (2097508KB) and has not gone any further.

I've also tried the mirror at betanews which was mentioned in this thread - again, it got to 60% before stopping, and after a number of reconnection attempts started again, once more getting to 64% (this time a different size - 2098155KB) before stopping and being unable to reconnect with "Error Occured!".

All my disks are NTFS formatted... and this is driving me mad :( Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?

I'm on an 120 cable modem, through an Asus router using a wired connection, not the wireless ability, and I've downloaded larger things before - albeit not recently...

Sunil

get it from somewhere else ;)

It cant be piracy as its a freely available download. Also a key is freely available and its distributed by micr$oft without a medium so any source of this has to be ok to use imo (obviously as long as theres no viruses or the like added ;))

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Thanks zinglebarb. I've been lurking on the site for a while and thought it would be prudent if my first post was not "why hasn't NTL upgraded my 2Mbit to 4Mbit yet"... :p:

I've already got the key - it seems like that is the only part of the MS beta program which is working correctly!

I was hoping to avoid "other sources", but meh. I'll probably end up doing this then...

I would still like to know why it's bugging out at approx. the same point (give or take 100Meg) each time though... it never stopped at less than 1.9GB, and it's never gone much over 2GB. Some other people seem to have had no problem downloading it... Is it an NTL thing, perhaps linked to specific invisible proxies - I'm in Cambridge by the way - as I was having lots of fun last week with proxy/DNS issues...

Cheers

Sunil

What is wrong with useing the word BitTorrent? Its not an ilegal program just like Limewire is not ilegal, some people may use it to break the law but also people can use it to share legal documents or files.

zing_deleted 14-06-2006 22:04

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Most "other sources" will have split the file into rars and created parity recovery files for it which is a far far far better way of dealing with such a big download.
This is a warning quote on the easynews web page about single files in excess of 255 meg

The cache servers are usually transparent. You can't tell they are in place until they corrupt a download.

This is a similar explaination as posted earlier about bigger files and NTL's proxies just not able to deal with it :) Micr$oft should archive there iso's before hosting imo

Well I have finally decided to give up trying to install this stupid Beta Vista.
Downloaded a second ISO file and burnt it to disc at the slowest speed Nero would let me, and that was 4x speed. Now it manages to get to 61% install before giving the dreaded Error 80070241. Would never surprise me if Microsoft has a dodgy download in the hope people will buy the disc. I know others have managed to download and install, but after two downloads and three burns, one failed on burn, am giving up. Using an empty 60gig drive so it should have been no problem.
Now have two key codes with nothing to use them on. :-(

nffc - you're an absolute gem :) Many thanks.

I have been tearing my hair out for the last few days trying to download both the 32 & 64 bit versions of Vista. Your method appears to work with both versions with the 32 bit version also now reporting the correct size - hopefully it will get past the 2GB cut off point that so many of us are experiencing.

Legorol 16-06-2006 13:48

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Any third party proxy server that you can find on the Internet, which uses other than port 80, should work. As long as they let you waste 4 Gb of bandwidth. ;)

If you want to stick to using an NTL proxy, here is a solution. You can use one of the still remaining, old proxies of the form cacheX-lang.server.ntli.net:8080 (where X is 1, 2 or 3).These return the correct file size. Unfortunately, these proxies do not support download resuming, so if you are almost at 4 gigs and the download disconnects, you can start all over again.

An avenue I tried is to start the download with one of the cacheX-lang proxies to get the right size, and download a few megabytes. I then changed back to one of the standard NTL proxies and resumed the download. The download does resume, but it stops at 13.7 Mb.

So it looks like the only solution at the moment is to either use a third party proxy, or use one of the cacheX-lang proxies for the entire download, and pray that you don't get disconnected.

EDIT: I can also confirm that nffc's solution (proxy IP 69.19.14.10 port 3128) works wonderfully. Even though it's a proxy in USA, I am getting full download speed at the maximum possible with my 2 Mbps connection.

In case you want to verify your download before burning it to a DVD, here are the MD5 hashes of the files:

32-bit version (vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso): 0e733ab1a8e8ff9a8684fd3639332773
64-bit version (vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x64fre_client-LB2CxFRE_EN_DVD.iso): e43502d0a15eadd551119d5639859e04

Downloading direct to my server at around 8m, will have whole ISO in about 6 mins.

Once it's there, I'll provide a link here with a 500 gig download limit ;)

that link gives
"You don't have permission to access /vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache/1.3.36 Server at www.your-domain-here.co.uk Port 80" i like the test card tune at the main page though LOL.

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Right, I had to put it as an FTP transfer, so you can either use the following details, or this link.

FTP: 195.20.108.53
UN: cableforum
PW:

There is NO password.

NOTE: That server has 100mbit of global transit, so should be good for multiple downloads.
If it gets a bit slow, I will limit to 20 or 30 connections ;)

Stuart W 17-06-2006 11:21

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Yes, server should resume partial downloads ;)

Nice one Stuart. I'm getting this now and it's maxing out my 10mb connection :)

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

That box should be capable of serving about thirty 10m connections, but it also hosts a couple of BF2 servers, so could get choppy if it's maxed out.

After i have downloaded the file, i believe i have to burn it onto a DVD disk!

Will any DVD disk do, or does it need to be specific!??

Thanks,

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Finally managed to get Vista and install it on my second HDD and its all working fine now after the initial problem of blue screen errors which was fixed by getting the ati driver for vista. Also managed to get sound, although only stereo its better than nothing!

The only problem i have at the moment is being able to dual boot vista and XP without having to swap over the cables, ive got XP on the master drive and Vista on the slave both HDD are working together in XP, but i want to be able to choose the boot up between XP and Vista when the PC is turned on, and I'm not exactly sure how to do this? Anyone know or is there any programs or instructions on how to do this?

That probably would have been the sensible option but at that time it didn't seem to wanna work, not sure why, but seeing as they wernt both in the PC at the same time do i just use the program u linked to running in vista or xp?

Or maybe i should reinstall vista with both drives in...? Altough id need to format the Vista drive again wouldnt i?

I think you have to run it from the vista dvd. but if you digest the link i posted it shoudl tell you.I aint read it all yet

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Would reinstalling Vista again be worth it to make the dual boot options appear? (Would that be simpler although possibly longer?)

zing_deleted 18-06-2006 15:41

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

yes it should
yes it will be quicker but only cuz you will have to learn how lol i spose its simple but dunno how

ok ill give that a try then hopefully it should work!

zing_deleted 18-06-2006 15:50

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

ok found it

boot from vista dvd
enter boot whatever and I believe you get to a command prompt at this prompt enter this key
bcdedit /displayorder {802d5e32-0784-11da-bd33-000476eba25f}
this should then add the older operating systems options and I believe use the existing xp boot ini file

(edit this may add a rogue operating system in the order that will not work however you should be able to delete the wrong on in vista)

User runs the risk on his own cuz I aint tried this yet

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

got the dual boot set up, the only thing i want to hange if possible is the OS that is the default. At the moment Vista is the default option and will load after the countdown, how can i change this sob that it is XP that loads after the countdown?

Running x64 version now I've figured out how to disable the requirement of signed drivers and got my Audigy 4 Pro working

So, for anyone having trouble with x64 Vista drivers:

1. Hit Windows Key + R to bring up the Run command window.

2. Type cmd and hit Enter.

3. At the Command Prompt, type "bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON" (without quotes).

NOTE: If you using an Audigy sound card, just download the Vista Beta driver dated 10th November 2005, unpack the .exe to the desktop with WinRAR and point Update Driver Software at C:\Users\Yourname\Desktop\SBAX_PCDVTBETA_US_2_08_0002\Drivers ;)

Re: Windows Vista Beta 2 Download Available

Anyone else disappointed with Vista's new Disk Defragmenter?

Well it doesn't seem to do a great deal for me. Currently after Vista (Beta 2) is installed, the system partition is heavily fragmented, especially the x64 build, so I thought I'd try Diskeeper and found this:

http://files.diskeeper.com/beta/Disk...Vista_beta.exe

Working perfectly on x64 Beta 2, I've not tested it on x86 yet but I gather it should work OK.

Graham M 19-06-2006 14:01

How is your Vista partition heavily fragmented already?
