Absolutely zip in Rutherglen. Most popular sites are still down and the connection is as sluggish as a wet sponge.

Nothing mentioned on the service status pages or service status line either. I am getting tired of paying for a second rate service. Not a happy bunny.:mad:

Moan finished.

Like everyone else, random sporadic loading of the bbc, yahoo, myspace and a couple of others.
Flickr is fine so far, as is youtube and (touch wood) MSN... but I'm not holding my breath!
I expect like the last time, this will be resolved at the same rate as the last one...
and isn't this the third time this year already that this has happened?

yahoo mail still cocked!

Onlyme - more than likely it is a bot DOS attack on the DNS servers. It is a quick and easy way to attack a complete network. I wonder if NTL have recently had emails asking for bazillions of pounds to stop the attack?

I seem to be ok, atm, with setproxy in firefox at 'none' (although I realise it doesn't mean that), but, seriously, I found earlier that setting a bromley cache, from my langley connection, was viable, during the recent problems, it may mean nothing but I thought I would share :)

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

If you're using Firefox then this should help:

Create a file called user.js in the folder
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.default

(where xxxxxxxx is some alpha/number sequence)

To the file add the lines:
user_pref("network.dnsCacheExpiration", 3600);
user_pref("network.dnsCacheEntries", 100);

Then restart Firefox.

This will increase the number of cached addresses to 100 and their timeout to 1 hour. After the panic is over you can either delete user.js or set the expiry time back down to 360 (= 6 mins) or something similar.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

OK unfortunately I don't have time to read this whole thread so this has probably been mentioned/answered, but I think NTL's caches use the 192.168.[4|8].100 DNS servers? So when these die, so do the caches?

The mixed browsing results are probably due to caching... Doesn't seem a too resilient setup to me?

I have counted at least 3 times this has happened :(

simply installing your own dns server will avoid all current and future DNS problems.... Ive always done my own dns lookups and havent suffered any issues (except maybe when the root servers were DoS'd, but then that affected a massive portion of the internet...

Good documentation on there too.

It's also annoying to people to see the same post (esp when they have already replied to it elsewhere)

It's like running up to several people one after the other asking them the same question...

No, call me shortsighted if you like, but I don't have a contingency Internet connection for when the main one goes down. Until I switched to NTL, I never needed one. My previous post was from my office.

Went ok last night again for a few hours. Back down to 3mb again at the min. I have never had a problem until early last week, my connection ahs always been maxed. As mentioned some popular sites google etc are random when/if i can get on them. Is this a problem that will be resolved? or are we just going to have to put up with it? If the latter i think i will be changing to a new ISP.

More connection issues here.

Can't hit eBay, BBC etc. I have an auction ending in 40 minutes and I need this to be sorted..I don't want to miss the auction *again* (relisted).

EDIT: As I posted that, it seems like I can now hit ebay and BBC. Strange.

EDIT2: Or not..

Oh no here we go again. And still no official word on what happened last time....

Do these people not realise Big Brother is on and I have no alternative but to surf the net whilst my girlfriend gets her BB fix?

msn relies on a connection to microsoft's hotmail system. generally if you cant see the 'hotmail.com' website ull have issues with msn
