( i think she had just been released from prison ) she then put me on hold and came back 10 mins later and said did i realise that i had to have a bt phone line for 3 months ect ect and i said yes i know. At which point she said how about we offer you 1mb broadband ( guranteed) tv base pack and talk unlimited 24 for £21.50 per month for 6 months which will be reviewed in 6 months. now i just hold my breath to see what the bill looks like :erm:

I phoned to ask for a replacement remote (they told they have run out) and then they offered me to reduce my total bill by a fiver per month and on top of that I can make unlimited phone calls evening and weekends.

Is this "NTL sale" week? Bizzare....

Did she actually take proper steps top ensure that the lady she was speaking to was actually the account holder?

I'm totally with you on the bill inspection-did you get this person's name?

You know what? I'm not sure you do need a BT line, & I think ntl may well be spinning you a line. :nono:

I may be wrong, but their whole package is to temp people away from the likes of BT & onto their network.

I'll check & let you know, but it sounds like ntl scare mongering to me....

A BT line is required

So you have to switch back to BT (who will no doubt do all they can to keep your custom), then switch to Talk Talk.

Either way, ntl letting customers go to any rival provider spells bad news.

Why are they not offering to keep you ? which services to you take ? or maybee they know you are not in a talk talk catchment area

I take broadband and telephone, have tv thru sky. i am in a talk talk area because i have inputted a relatives tel no/postcode on thier website who live around the corner, site informed ok and would take 3 weeks to switch.

as i stated eaarlier to reactivate bt line i have to subscribe to bt for a minimum of 3months, so i might ring ntl and tell them not to cancel my broadband and then ring bt and get the ball rolling on the tel line, or i could just un-cancel both and hope NTL come up with and official offering.

When i phoned talk talk they told me that i would not need to switch to BT but just have BT take the line over which would cost about £20 or so then i could go straight to talk talk. I dont know how true this is though.

I'm no expert, but this sounds very, very unlikely. I have a BT and NTL line. They are physically separate things. The NTL line goes underground to their cabinet, and the BT line goes to a pole over the road (and then to the BT exchange). How would your NTL line connect your modem to the TalkTalk gear at the BT exchange?

I guess the TalkTalk rep probably thought you have another LLU company supplying your phone, e.g. Bulldog, via the BT line. They're probably as well trained as the NTL staff.

I'm not sure how it works but i did say that i had NTL as my phone provider. Maybe he didn't know too much about it himself.

One would assume so (although there seems to be some confusion if you also transfer your cable phone number).

However, it is worth pointing out that any change to BT will require a BT minimum contract of 3 months (for a reconnection) or 12 months (for a new connection) before you can switch to TalkTalk.

Someone would have to ring BT but I'm sure if you're porting your number out from BT to an LLU you can do it within your minimum contract.:)

Got 10Mb BB for 17.99 12 Months!

Called Yesterday, the call lasted just over an hour - at first CS offered me a 12 quid reduction on my package (just 10Mb BB) I asked to speak to retentions. After 40mins on hold, spoke to a very nice woman. She offered me the service at half price for 12 months and a replacement modem (as I've been having issues since the 10Mb rollout.)

Just ring CS and ask to be transferred to Retentions and tell them that you want to switch to TalkTalk and they will give you a deal as well. If you have phone with them also all the better.

NTL should stop farting around and bring out a proper OFFICIAL package which competes directly with talktalk and takes (marketing) advantage of the fact that a phone line isn't necessary for cable modem customers so they can offer a lower price for those that dont want a phone line.

eg. 10meg broadband for £20 a month or 10meg broadband plus a phone line for £22.

Anyone got a better offer for all 3 services through retentions? Like TU24, base TV and 2mb bb?

My current talk unlimited weekends, base tv and 1mb bb is simply not competitive enough for £30 considering the quality of service NTL. Will switch services unless retentions can come up trumps and avoid the hassle of switching.

I rang them today. Got the following offers:

10Mb broadband half-price at £17.50 per month for 3 months.
5p Talk Plan for £5.25 per month for 6 months.

Total: £22.75 +calls at 5p per hour (evening/weekend)

And the best bit - broadband was installed 7 months ago, the phone was installed 3 months ago :) :) :)

Not sure what happened there - I'll believe it when I get the bill! I was with NTL for years at a previous address though.

Dont know if I got a good deal or not, £40.99 for 2meg BB, Family pack Digital TV, and free calls after 6pm, and anytime at the weekend, and alegedly no line rental, and the 1st months TV free.

Which is better than the £38.99 for the analogue TV base pack, 2mg BB, line rental and basic phone package, and it is going to be installed Tues.... I won't be holding my breath.

Anyone got a Tivo, which is the best box to get.

You would think they would, but this is ntl we talking about. To have one package in place to compete and be available to everyone rather then pot luck when you ring up would require some organisation and communication between ntl departments I am not sure they capable of that.

etccarmageddon 20-04-2006 06:29

it's not just about being proactive it should also be about being fair - ie. all customers are paying a similar rate for the same service.

But if ntl were on the ball they would have an offer to match/beat the CPW's offer ready & waiting for the people who have phoned up to cancel.

They could then have gone on the marketing offensive themselves to show that their offer is better than CPW's....

However, they didn't & they are now either:

1) Losing customers to CPW.

2) Giving out large discounts to customers.

3) Peeing off existing customers who don't get offered those same discounts when they ring.

4) Losing those customers who don't get offered the discounts.

Ho hum....

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Their strategy is probably pretty sensible. Remember that most NTL subscribers don't visit cableforum.

A big chunk of NTL's subscribers will continue paying £35 per month or whatever, will not leave, and won't know anything about NTL discounts. By only offering discounts to those who moan, they can keep taking money off those who don't.

I don't think "fair" enters into the equation. Life isn't fair. NTL, like any other business, wants to take in as much cash as possible.

headrush 20-04-2006 11:10

I think thats probably a fair point, however sometime in the near future NTL are going to have to offer a package to compete with the ever reducing prices other companies are offering bb for, otherwise they will never entice new customers. If they continue their current strategy of not being particularly competitive and only offering discounts/upgrades to existing customers who try to leave, they can only expect their number of customers to reduce.

etccarmageddon 20-04-2006 13:29

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

the 10meg upgrades for the existing 1meg and 2meg customers should be enough to counter the talktalk threat.

they also might put a big one page advert in the papers saying how "we have 2 million customers who prefer to pay for their broadband" - that's what BT have just done!!!

Are Talk Talk doing free modems, connection and 0800 customer support? The free add-ons are usually the first to go when a service is offered at bargain prices (or completely free). IIRC NTL internet support cost a fortune when it was 'free' dial up.

etccarmageddon 20-04-2006 14:17

Talktalk charge £30 for connection, give you a 'free' modem and charge 50p a min for help based on that BT press advert 'hint' at the cost. I can not find a phone number on the talk talk site in order to check that 50p cost.

Hmmm...

I was under the impression that currently if you ring the TT 0871 number from your home phone (to query a bill/add a feature/whatever for example) that the call was free.

etccarmageddon 20-04-2006 15:26

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

so today's BT advert which doesn't mention talktalk but is referring to 'free' broadband providers is extremely misleading as it taints these free providers as having 50ppm phone numbers.

I hope they can at least provide an example 'free' broadband provider which does charge 50p a min or their advert is a lie.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I've checked the BT advert and it does mention the 50p per min charge.

So I'd like to know the point of advertising why 2million BT customers enjoy paying for their broadband because they wont have to pay 50p a min support costs when if you DONT pay for broadband you also wont have to pay a 50p a min support cost either.

Also the advert fails in another sense - ie. those 2 million BT customers only enjoy paying for broadband because probably 99% signed up when paid for broadband was the only option. You can't advertise that your customers enjoy paying for a service when the 'free' alternative has only been available for a week AND a lot of your customers will be tied into a 12 month contract so cant leave yet anyway!

Just to let you guys know that Bully aren't (at the moment) offering to match the new Talk Talk offer.

Ntl seem to be able to do it but the cancellations department at Bully can't.

When I pushed the guy that I spoke with he said he'd offer me 2 months free rental (£60) but he couldn't do anything else. So it's definitely worth a call to cancellations.

Seeing as I'd only be saving £108 by moving to TT and I'd have to pay at least £30 activation then I thought it was a fair compromise.

However I'll be watching to see how the market reacts to the TT offer and I'll be jumping ship if necessary. A very nice £60 it was but not enough of a sweetener to keep me permanently!
Just posted this on my site, it looks like Ntl are being fairly clever over this, Bully don't seem to have done anything to plan for it. Maybe they have less customers phoning about it?

Do they really think 2,000,000 customers could have switched in the past couple of weeks, even if the service was available now? Their call centres couldn't cope with that sort of call volume let alone TT's.

there's no point in complaining - the ASA are useless - they dont fine or impose any proper control - the worse case result would be BT aren't allowed to use the AD again. they should be forced to readvertise with a corrected advert.

BT can put whatever they want on bt.com, it's their website.

They could put that the moon is made of cheese if they wish, nothing the ASA can do about it.

I don't think "fair" enters into the equation. Life isn't fair. NTL, like any other business, wants to take in as much cash as possible.

Its not just offers tho ntl have this problem for years and with various stuff, it goes from basic stuff such as ringing for tech support to things such as the 10meg upgrade where some people who rang up got the modem others got told they couldnt have it and I got put back on 2meg, this is when cableforum intervened. So in lots of situations ntl are inconsistent with customers because the CS reps just arent kept informed and probably have to 2nd guess what they tell the customers half the time.

you think a capped oversubsribed 10meg beats unlimited 1/2 meg?

you can download less per month
speeds will likely be no better at peak times (which remember is when most users are using their connection, so no good it been fast at 5am if they zzZZ then) speeds could even be worse which I think is more likely
users having to pay for modem upgrade or do ntl stomach the cost

NTL and BT both play the same game here, they assume customers who dont ring up are happy with their service. Whats more likely is customers use them because they the big names everyone knows and if things go wrong alot of the time they just cant be bothered to complain and just get on with their life. If people do ring up they get fodged off with excuses (this happens in BT as well as NTL)

And when is this going to happen I doubt it will happen soon.

While I keep getting high pings with and without the router on 2mb what use is the 10mb.
What NTL need is to move back to having the network monitored and intervention before it goes wrong.. Back to techies daily checking and testing the network not waiting for customers to fight their way through faults.

You really need to ring up and threaten to leave for them to actually give you anything worthwhile, telling them you aren't happy with the price doesn't give them much incentive to offer you anything as you don't look to be actually doing anything about it!
Ring them and name an offer, such as the Talk Talk one, and they can try match it for you, otherwise you will get fobbed off... They won't offer you more than you sound like you want;)

Just phoned, bit confused, but we are either getting 2mbit for 12.50 or 9.99

and a tenner off the TV bill - which seems weird as talktalk don't do TV.

So £18 or £20.50/month saved.

Quite happy with that.

How long will the 2mbit take to come into effect?

That's correct these offers dont exist (officially). How many times do I have to say this - you wont get these offers unless you get transferred to 'retentions'.

true say, but we just want the Broadband from NTL, we're happy with Sky TV and a couple of months ago we canceled NTL phone for BT, they tried and tried to get us back but told them to shove it.

Since we just want to broadband, what offer would i likely be given, i'm on 2MB.

ok I just sucessfully played the retentions April lucky dip game and they matched or beat the CW offer in all regards apart from BB speed and download limit - many thanks to all those who posted their experiences. Seems strage that everyone seems to end up with a different package or price or length or deal to each other.

Now all I need to do is watch for them to start overcharging after 3 months like they always do.

Is online billing available yet?

I rang customer services and just said I thought their service was far too expensive compared with the competition. I said I was looking at ADSL, as it's much cheaper. I then said I haven't yet looked in any detail, as if they can offer a better deal then I won't bother looking at which ISP to get. I was then just told I need to give 30 days notice for cancellation. I again said that I'm not ready to cancel, I'm currently just pricing up the alternatives.

I then asked whether they had some kind of "retentions" department who could offer any better deals ;) . I was then put straight through to them, who offered me half-price everything without any hassle.

So I did have to ask specifically for retentions, otherwise they wouldn't have offered. My approach was friendly and chatty, not agressive. It was not a problem at all. And I've saved £22.50 per month, just on broadband and phone. I have freeview TV.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Hi

Thanks to all those who have input to this thread. I called ntl this afternoon and am pleased with the result. I have phone and 1Mb Broadband. Originally signed up @300K with phone line free for 1 year, thought that was good as 1 month later the 1Mb upgrade came in. Once paying full price about 5 months ago £28.50, not so happy. Anyway, first guy I talked to offered £24.99 for what I have already, got transferred about 3 times then. Finally talked to a lady in retentions I think. Offered £8.99 for 1Mb BB and £5.25 for phone line, so that was a pretty good start, I then mentioned Talk Talk! So, I bit of suggesting this and then and I settled with:

10Mb broadband @ £10.50 per month
Phone Line rental @£10.50 per month with Talk Unlimited 24

I also asked if they could throw in caller display, which she said she would but I had to go to a different dept, they eventually said it wasn't available in my area, disappointing, but I am now saving £7 per month straight off have increased my broadband speed 10 times and get free landline calls across the UK.

I also asked about international. Now beware on this one. With talk unlimited 24 they include the internation call plan, which is reduced rates to lots of countries, not free calls to certain countries, so be careful when they say international is included in comparison to the Talk Talk offer. I notices that for the international calls through Talk Talk you have to dial a prefix code for the free calls.

I use VOIP for free landline international calls anyway, so wasn't overly bothered on this.

I have to say, it wan't that much hard work to talk them into this. Was probably on the phone for 45 mins, but this was mostly holding :-( My advice, call them, see how much you can push them and save without the hassle of switching providers.

Good luck

Regards

John

Of course not, I just made it up.

A company website is not the same as hiring advertising space.

A company can advertise whatever they wish on their own website. This has been the case forever as far as I know.

It going against the ASA is irrelevant, the ASA has no jurisdiction over it. Go make a complaint about it being on their website and enjoy the response.

Not sure where you've been as someone who should be interested in this industry running http://www.my-bulldog-hell.co.uk/ but you've obviously missed companies running misleading advertising on their own websites knowing that they are safe from ASA.

Why would anyone sign a 12-month contract for a 3-month offer? Be serious.

I could "only" get 10Mb down to £17.50, but I also got the phone at half-price. All in all, it looks like your total bill will be roughly halved by ringing them up (so you'd be mad not to).

Hi

Well I'm pretty pleased yes. Haven't used the net yet much since upgrading, but I did check it has happened and I am indeed on 10Mbps download and 512kbps upload :) Will have to try some downloads soon and see how it holds up. To check the speed I did this:

http://192.168.100.1/P_operation.htm
username root
password root

Gives you your max upload and download speeds.

I was told that there was no date attached to these new prices. I even spoke to someone after the lady who offered the deal and he confirmed there was no date on it, which he thought strange. Will have to see what the next bill says.

The best bit is that I have been playing with VOIP for a few weeks no in order to get rid of my ntl phone line. I don't need to bother now! Was getting concerned with the reliability of it all especially with routers and modems that crash from time to time.

Later......

Just thought i may add this is also working in faour af a few Telewest customers as well, i mentioned Talk Talk on the phone to them, and they immediately offered me my 4Mb service for the introductory price of £12.50. However i knew i would then lose out on my 3 for 30 deal.

Glad I read this, allthough wish i had read it before I cancelled the TV.
As a first step in getting rid of the NTL BS I have had, I today decided to stop the TV services side, and look at the other services on offer by other companies (Talk Talk):D

I was told that there was a 30 day notice period, however lo and behold, no TV service straight away.

As for Talk Talk they of course cannot connect me because I need a BT line first.:erm:

So my question is I guess, would it be worth ringing NTL and asking for retentions.

I now just have 1Mb BB and Phone.

Hi this is my first post , I read this thread yesterday so called NTL first thing today and told them i was considering disconnecting after looking at other offers ( ie talk talk and Sky )

I was paying approx £75 every month as a final bill for my for Phone + Call Charges , Digital TV Family pack & Sky Sports 1 & 3 , and 2mb Broadband

After telling them i was considering leaving I now have :

Digital TV Family Pack & ALL Sports Channels + ALL Movie channels + 2mb Broadband + Phone with unlimited 24 hours UK calls all for £55 a month

They told me i could have 10mb for an extra £5 approx , but it was capped at 75gb and i was better using the uncapped 2mb service that i had . I asked if 10mb uncapped was available and they said not yet , but they were trialing 50mb soon so just keep an eye out ....

All in all well worth the 15 mins on the phone . PS I rang 0800 0529403 and chose option 2 .

RESULT !!!!!

I've never had any major problems with NTl , and changed my packages several times adding and reducing things off it , and done two house moves with them in that time.......... they've been professional all the way through .
