Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I'm pretty annoyed to be honest, I live in manchester just down the road from the ntl office there and have called CS up twice and had no luck at all. They keep telling me that I can upgrade to 3Meg but I can't have 10meg until it's out officially and they're only "trialling" it at the moment with those that are already on 10Meg.
Told them I'd seen that lots of people have been upgraded and they just told me where to go..... gay. Grrrr...... |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Work this one out then folks....
Rand CS got a nice friendly scottish lady and enquired about the 10mb roll-out,was told in the grimsby area it's december,so i asked the lady would you increase me to the 3mb tier..yes no problem. Re-booted the modem got a speed of 2.5mb then got a call back from the same lady saying had to downgrade you back to the 2mb as your modem the ntl100 wont take it,so from this i assume either it wont take 3mb which i'm sure it will or shes saying it's allready in your area but untill december your not having it..... Anyway she told me that i will get a letter or email asking me if i want to upgrade,so for now looks like i have to stay on the 2mb and also she told me you'll get another modem. |

*ty for the number
Just a few questions I would like answering really... What is the best way of contacting ntl for the upgrade? I have a STB that was upgraded about a year back to a silver samsung one I think. I can't use the upgrade page online because they cannot upgrade STB from there. I have called NTL (10mb is in Peterborough where I live) and they said I will be upgraded by end of november and some crap that I think they were on about as a way of getting me off the phone tbh. I remember when I was upgraded from 1mb to 3mb, I called them and asked for 3mb, 2mins later is was on (first call). Now its just a complete pain in the ****, I just want my upgrade!!! It appears as though they want to make me wait because I have a STB. Well I pay for their top Internet service, two telephone lines and a moderately sized TV package from them, wheres the service back? Please help meeeeeee :) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
the best way, if it matters so much, is to be polite and dont take any crap (ie. getting non level playing field treatment compared to new customer). or you could be patient and sit it out for a few weeks or a couple of months and wait for them to get on top of it.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I have just finished what was the longest phone call in my life, can you guess who i was calling?
Thats Right! NTL Customer Services and then the NTL Broadband Technical Support dept. I rang the customer services line and the kind chap on the other end told me to ring this number he gave me and they would be able to upgrade my 3mb service to 10mb over the phone, but guess what... Thats right again! they quoted the same old quote: "NTL 10Mbit service will be automatically upgraded at the end of December 2005". When I asked them why 2mb customers were recieving the service first he told me it was impossible. Impossible? Impossible! So my eyes decieved Me and everyone else aswell? I think not! (Somone posted a screen shot of the online upgrade page with there 2mb service stated then below a choice to upgrade to 10mbit!) I have read many of the posts in this topic and it seems to me that the NTL employees havent got a clue about the products there selling or as to when the upgrades will actually happen. My best guess is just sit tight and wait until its become "official" and if its not been upgraded by then, get on the phone. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Well the support staff can only be as good as the information they are given.
And it seems this time they have been given differing bits of info. Because someone higher up has failed it seems to get a grasp on the situation, he's exposed all the CS staff to repeated pleas for upgrades that they cant give, and no doubt verbal abuse. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Is bund03 3MB or 10MB?
|
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
its does seem that NTL CS have been told different pieces of information, and not enough information. From what ive gathered the people with the 10mbit service at the moment are in the trial areas and that the 10mbit service will go mainstream in December 2005.
If they were a bit less secretive about it then people wouldnt be ringing them up asking for the upgrades. |

I phoned up just now and explained what happened and she said it's only for new customers...BUT, since i was told i could get it by the other guy, she will upgrade me now :D Shutdown the computer and unplugged the modem for a minute, powered back and im now on 10mb :D

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
The way I see it, by reading these threads here and on other forums, the 10mb is being rolled out to new customers and existing 3mb customers with the right modems, mainly the SACM 200 and 250's, as far as I can tell, the customers with them SACM's are getting the full whack!... the people who are on 1mb and 2mb might get the 10mb? but only if they upgrade to the 3mb @ £37.99. .. if they dont, then they are looking at 2006 for their upgrade.
Software may allow other/older SACM's to get the full 10mb instead of 4mb to 7,8mb in the not so distant future? same goes for customers on the samsung's has for the old pace stb's they will NOT get the 10mb no matter what! so there's going to be a busy period for the NTL istallation team trying to swap them out for the new SACM's before the end of next year. |

It is true new customers are getting the 10mb first because the modems they are being installed with are 250 and can cope with the new speeds. The upgrades (me included) are only getting 5/6Mb because of a firmware issue (i use a 120), he told me that firmware will be upgraded (but no indication when) and if this did not work new new modems will be issued. Apparently, I am on the upgrade path but no indication when, I was told just to be patience....which I am being :) |

New to the forum but will let you know what I have been told by ntl Customer Services. I had my broadband upgraded from 3MB to 10MB on Wednesday. I am currently only getting 5MB Down but full speed Up. I am using a ntl:120 modem. As I am moving house next week, but still staying in same area, I asked about having a new ntl:250 modem installed when the engineer comes to connect my service at the new house, as I am not getting the full 10MB Down. The Customer Service Rep said that everyone with a ntl:120 modem will be getting a new ntl:250 modem as they are not releasing any firmware updates. These new modems will be released in batches but Cust Servs were unable to say when they would start delivering the new modems, but did say it would be this year if you are currently on the 3MB service. Hope this all makes some sense to some people. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
so why is this? I read on this site that a couple of people in my area now have >5Mb, yet i don't. 'ok...' i thought, 'i'll give NTL a call and ask..'. so i did. I was told by a polite Scottish woman that only selected people were getting 10Mb (as well as new users) as part of a pilot. Fair enough, I thought, and left it there.
In the last 20 minutes, I have been speaking with a friend of mine who lives in the same town as myself. He is also on 3Mb, yet when he calls NTL (within the last 20 minutes) and asks them the same thing, they upgrade him straight away, no questions asked!?!?!? So, I call NTL again and explain the whole situation, but once more, they tell me it is pilot and that 10Mb is not available in my area!! He's shown me the screen shots of him using 10Mb!!! Not in my area??? Pilot??? What's going on???? |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
The Terayon TJ210 can handle 10mbps, if your not getting the speeds its due to the network interface in your PC/Router, the college i used to go to had a TJ210 on a 38Mbit connection and it run perfectly at upto "37.8MBit" with a maximum upload of "5MBit"
These are tested figures (exact figures are in a coursework which is still being marked) anyway solong as the modem is hooked into a 10/100mbps network card/device (i.e. router firewall...) it will work fine. only people with an old 10mbps network card will recive a reduced speed when downloading |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Quote:
To put the download thing in context, though - at the moment, a 3MB connection takes around 3 seconds to download 1 megaBYTE (connections are measured in megaBITS). With 10MB, less than a second will hook your 1MB, but this obviously depends on the speed of the server you're connected to. As a rule, commercial sites - Microsoft, Apple, Google, Yahoo etc are connected to mirrored servers, which makes them suitable for maxing out your connection. Personal sites and ones one smaller scales are usually only on one server, so you have to just hope that their ISP's are connected to big pipes. :D |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Who are people calling to get modems replaced so quickly, and more recent modems than I have? I've called broadband tech support numerous times asking for a new modem (currently a Surfboard 3100) but each time get through to what I assume is an Indian call centre reading me things from a crib sheet. Even the old line "I work in IT, I know what I'm talking about" get me nowhere and trying to explain to them that 1.2 megabits doesn't equal 1200 kilobytes (they tried to argue that 1.2 megabits was the speed I should be getting) is driving me around the bend.
It was really slow, getting 120kbytes/sec (a third of what I had before being upgraded) but my first call to BTS was to a nice english chap who re-added me to the system. That helped and am now getting about 4mb and 512k upload, but I'd rather ask for a modem now than wait for NTL to forget/ignore about giving me a new modem, I pester them for one then having no stock (me, a cynic? ;) ) (Sorry for the mini rant, but I feel like I'm getting nowhere with them, the English chap even said if it's still not behaving to call back, he'll put notes in my account to say needs a modem upgrade, but either he didn't or the other people ignored/didn't read them.) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
There is a lot of difference between being the only modem connected to the CMTS / uBR and having to share that bandwidth with others, that's why in a lab a Terayon might be able to happily do 10Mbit+ however when having to filter out transmissions destined for other MAC addresses, having to handle small packets as well as large ones, etc, it's not really an option.
Can't remember if Terayons have a 100Mbit or 10Mbit ethernet port, however those getting close to the 10Mbit might want to check their ethernet settings, as the speeds described are approximately the maximum for a 10Mbit ethernet connection. |

I got my upgrade yesterday, first time calling too. (blog post) However, a mate of mine is trying to get hers, but after the 5th call is still getting absolutely nowhere. The lines from CS aren't even consistent. She's had.. It's a pilot. New Customers only. Not available in your area. You've already got it. and.. '10mb? Not something I've heard of.' Total nightmare. Anybody browsing the forum right now in CS that could possibly help her out? :) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Hmmm perhaps I'm a whoooos (or too old) but I'm not going to lie about my Ambit 100 not working (it works fine ... up to 3M). I still have not established if the Ambit 100 can handle anything above 3M.... so .. anyone in the Reading area on a Ambit 100 who has upgraded to 10M and is seeing more than 3M ??
Tech support clearly told me today that I am not seeing more than 3M because the network will not support it in my area - and not because I have a Ambit 100 (although he did say that if my network was updated then I still would not get 10M until I change the modem - but I would get more than 3...). Right this might put things in perspective for those of you bitching about not getting the upgrade.
[i recived a letter this morning informing me that i would be upgraded later in the day] sure enough around 3pm this afternoone my recived the new config, the modem rebooted and died.. naturaly i though oh maby they turned the server off for the upgrade.. so i waited three hours... no change went round to my negbours house (who IS on the same UBR and his 2meg connection was fine) i then realised something was wrong so i called Customer Support and asked them if their was a problem with my UBR, their reply was simple.. no UBR 5 is fine but your modem isnt showing up on our system, hang on whilst we connect you to Tech Support. just had a nice long chat with a NTL tech support guy called Mick, he sounded very stressed and when i told him someone had screwed the config on my Terayon TJ210 he quickly sent the pulse and reset me to 3mbit. and put me on hold whilst he screamed at the CS manager. (because his staff sent me the letter.. or so i expect) anyway after a few mins on hold, he told me that whoever had upgraded me had put me on the closest 10meg enabled UBR without checking, after a short chat about NTL's Customer Services screwups, he dispatched a work team to upgrade UBR 5 and the others in the Huddersfield area. Just to confirm only UBR 7 is ready for the Upgrade in the huddersfield area! (some others may become avaliable in a day or so.. UBR 5 is currently being configured to allow the 10meg service [thanks to Mick @ Tech Support]) ================================================ Also It seems Customer Service has been told to upgrade ANYONE who asks, Whereas Tech Support has been screeching at them to stop upgrading people, becuase the Customer Service Staff are changing people to diffrent UBR's which is causing the modem's config to clash with the UBR's config and effectivly generates a lot of problems put simply the more of you who ask for it, the longer its going to take for others to get it, because tech support guys are having to deal with your problems before they can update more UBR's for the service. Quite literally, before you upgrade ASK whoever your talking to at CS if your UBR is upgraded to accept the 10Meg config file! ================================================== ========== sorry about my spelling/gramma, ive been up since 23:00 last night (night shift at work) |

I been using my net connection during peak hours for first time since the 10mbit rollout started and I have noticed my speeds going down and down until it got to a point where its stupid. I aborted a download going at SEVEN KBYTE SEC 7kB/sec. Did a tracert and got this. 1 331 ms 346 ms 353 ms UBR [10.8.143.254] 2 399 ms 349 ms 353 ms leic-t2cam1-b-ge914.inet.ntl.com [82.3.35.213] 3 367 ms 354 ms 350 ms leic-t2core-b-ge-210-0.inet.ntl.com [82.3.33.134 ] 4 359 ms 354 ms 361 ms nth-bb-b-so-230-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.114] 5 351 ms 360 ms 375 ms pop-bb-a-so-100-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.14] 6 426 ms 330 ms 369 ms pop-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.77] 7 741 ms 710 ms 651 ms amst-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.94] 8 616 ms 699 ms 699 ms asd-nik-ias-ur10.nl.kpn.net [195.69.144.89] 9 691 ms 696 ms 669 ms asd-sara-ipc-dr02.nl.kpn.net [195.190.227.247] 10 373 ms 687 ms 689 ms 195.190.233.135 11 674 ms 691 ms 683 ms 195.190.233.253 12 696 ms 699 ms 684 ms ffm-s1-rou-1002.DE.eurorings.net [134.222.230.30 ] 13 558 ms 712 ms 684 ms ffm-s1-rou-1077.DE.eurorings.net [134.222.229.54 ] 14 739 ms 620 ms 726 ms xxxxxxx that was earlier and it was on and off for about 20 minutes and now seems to be normal again (low contention). |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
its probably the download server..
try downloading a driver installer from nvidia (you can delete it afterwards :p) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Ok, ran several speedtests, rebooted the modem several times, phoned the Indian Call Centre - gosh, I never heard the word 'December' banded about as much as I did when I made that call.... wow! they LOVE the word!!
Thing is, I've noticed around the 10mb connection topics that some lucky dude got their 10mb connection in Stockport (where I am) and well, that can only mean it's available in Stockport, right? right... I frankly don't think NTL know who or why or how and when all this 10mb thing is doing. We see 3mb on all tests done (ran three different ones) and right now, although we're not technically at the 'hair pulling and throwing a wobbler' stage, until we know whats what, we're getting close... I like how they announce things. There's an NTL stand in town here - they also seem totally perplexed and bemused about the 10mb thing aswell - seems some of us are better informed than the staff... I suggested they phoned the Indian Call Centre before walking away, slightly less informed than I previously was. |

[if you know for sure your modem isnt capable of 10meg's download, ask nicely if you could have an exchange after christmas. its not going to kill you to have a 5/6meg downstream for a few weeks] just like its not going to kill us 3meg (and you 1+2meg customers) to wait a week or two before persuing the upgrade (as stated again and again by Customer Services the official roll out starts in December! [it probably will start before December but it wont finish till late January or even Febuary]) If your impatient by all means call them. but bear in mind the network is not fully ready! so dont be moaning about slow speeds etc... [if your sent a notification be aware that it may have been sent prematurly.. as NTL 24hour tech support called me 25mins ago stating that i would be a Pilot 10meg customer for my Area (HD7) but the letter was sent several days early] __________________ Quote:
most areas have atleast 10 UBR's (and there not all up graded together) just give it a few weeks __________________ Quote:
dont forget there could be 100users or more on a single UBR so if several of them are trying to use 10meg at the same time... about 90 people will be getting a few Kbps the speed issues will hopefully be fixed when more UBR's are avaliable for the 10meg service |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Of all the People currently on NTL Broadband, I would imagine a SMALL minority would actually visit here and be aware of the said 10mbit upgrade happening. To my Knowlege there is no Map, Postcode checker to see if your UBR (I dont even know which UBR I am on for that matter) has been upgraded.
When the 1/2/3Mbit upgrade came out people either waited (who were in the dark) or went to Upgrade page to force the modem to the new speeds. If Phoning CS and they checked something and said: 1. Yes you can have 10mbit, do you want it? 2. 10mbit not enabled in your area - plan is about XX Month The reality is simple, depends on who you get, depends on what answer you get, people are ringing many many times to hopefully get someone who might upgrade them as can be seen on here. All that is doing is increasing the calls on CS / TS for people wanting 10mbit now. WOuld it be possible for someone on the "Inside" to basically answer these questions: 1. Is it a Trail or a staggered rollout by area?? CS have said it was both so far. 2. Is there a list somewhere rather then us guessing what area's are done with the said list been updated as more UBR get upgraded. Would be even better if you could make a UK map coloured in type thing. 3. On the upgrade page - if it says BUND03 - what service is this, it has no Price whatsoever (even though we know it is 37.99) - do we take from that unless it says 10mbit then it is not in the selected area? Would it not have been better to read 3mbit or 10mbit - then we would know.. Hopefully someone can answer these or people will keep trying and trying and posting till the cows come home - we are basically "In the Dark"... |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
out of interest, what number are you guys calling to get put on the 10Mb service? everytime I call 0800 052 2000, i get through to someone scottish who insists that 10Mb isn't in my area (when I know for a FACT it is because others here whom I know are already on it after asking to get it switched on)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I got Through to a Scotish Guy And he give me it. Maybe they our only giveing it to a few people in Each Postcode to see how it does and if they need to fix things like speed. I think that is what it is.

I called the 150 option from my NTL phone, I asked them for the upgrade, they said ok no problem, I phoned back 3 hours later to ask them what had gone wrong? They told me that I couldn't have 10 meg yet. |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
When I phoned to check about the upgrade I was told that I would have to change from Stb(samsung 3 meg from first availability) to SACM to get the 10meg and that if I wanted it now I would be charged to have the SACM fitted.
WTF are they on about, I have been with them for 11 years and they don't give a stuff. :grind: :2up: |
