The 75gb "cap" is probably more of a deterant than a hard limit to try and minimise the amount of people trying to download the internet. I'd be shocked if they clamped down harder on someone paying £35 a month than someone paying £18. Although I'm sure it won't mean you can max out your connection 24/7.

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

Just to point out I said about those *forced* to downgrade due to caning it.

Those *upgraded* to the 512k from 300k will have no problems upgrading, only those forcibly moved to 512k will have any problems.

Re: NEW! NTL Unlimited Downloads

come on you did'nt think NTL were serious about upgrading the 1 and 2 mb users... The system is on its knees with the 10mb users nevermind the unlimited 1 and 2mb products, you will never be able to download 24/7 at good speeds.

NTL also mentioned in the same press release they were brining out a a turbo button wherte you can upgrade change the speed for a short time... hmm this has'nt happend

Im currently on 10mb and currently getting

Wed, 14 Dec 2005 20:50:26 UTC

1st 512K took 2734 ms = 187.3 KB/sec, approx 1543 Kbps, 1.51 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2328 ms = 219.9 KB/sec, approx 1812 Kbps, 1.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1766 ms = 289.9 KB/sec, approx 2389 Kbps, 2.33 Mbps
4th 512K took 2265 ms = 226 KB/sec, approx 1862 Kbps, 1.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1902 Kbps, 1.86 Mbps

Emm imagine the unlimted 1 & 2mb users on the pipe aswell.. will we be able to contact the internet with so much traffic on the pipe ? hmm LOL... No..

Just because they slap 'unlimited' on it doesn't mean people will instantly change their usage patterns and whore out their connections.

I won't..I've only been having problems because my son wants to play a particular game..and I shall still be restricting his usage on my PC as much as possible because I want to use my PC for other things besides the internet.;)

Are you sure you have the 10meg config file and that you aren't downloading/uploading atm ? If you are sure of both of these then you should contact TS as you clearly have a connection problem.

So will it go unlimited on 1st Jan 2006, or just at 'some time' in Jan 2006? Unspecific as ever!

Although, this is great news. :)

I think this does it for me, i'm going UK online adsl 2 as soon as the festive (read expensive) season has passed. 10mb cap should be at least 150gb, 75 is pathetic compared to whats on offer.

It's doubtful it will be 1st Jan. NTL will be operating on a skeleton staff because of New Year.

You might aswell stick with them till they decide they don't want you anymore and enforce the cap. NTL has announced a new usuage limit every couple of months for the past couple of years and so far have done very little enforcing.

Unless of course you're downloading enough to affect others, then you probably should go elsewhere :p:

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

The cap is disproportionate but we all should know by now ntl are constantly changing their minds, I wouldnt rule out a cap increase on 10meg with the tier below it been almost 10x the amount, especially if a mass amount of people downgrade.

I don't think NTL see it that way, they currently have two sales booths in the precinct here in Oldham, and today they also had sales people mugging people in the streets, I guess we have a lot of spare capacity locally.

so NTL will be offering atleast 3 BB services in Jan (or when it rolls out)
1mb unlimited
2mb unlimited
10mb 75gig cap
are NTL still offering 10mb with lower cap??
and has NTL said about what will happen if we go over the 10mb 75gig cap??
before this announcement
people were saying u will go down to the 512k unlimited service (1mb unlimited in Jan??)

so would people going over the cap be put on to the 2mb after Jan??

Best way is to switch to 2mb unlimited before risking going over the cap, thats what i will be doing pretty soon myself.

Oh dear oh dear, so what does this latest NTL announcement mean? I thought everyone was going to10mb from Jan now looks like 1 & 2mb remain except no download limit? Which idiot thought this up? So I pay £34.99 from Jan for 10mb but limited to 75gig or 24.99 for as much as i can eat but slower speed... hmmmm .....time to downgrade, just leave the connection running while at work.
Really NTL you shoot yourself in the foot every F**kin day. And potentially such a good company. Increase the limit of the 10mb service to unlimited and the country will sign up in droves.

im on the 2mb service at the moment and dont download a great deal but listen to loads of online radio and a lot of surfing 10gb -20gb month is my average usage i dont think i would notice a great deal of difference if i was to downgrade to the 1mb unlimited tier and save £7 a month i think i will call them now.. oh yeah and i use voip but im guessing that a 1mb connection is more than enough for this ?

Why leave the connection running whilst you are at work? Can't you download enough overnight on a 2 Mb service?

10 Mb unlimited is not an option. The country would not sign up in droves as these forums would be full of posts saying they are supposed to be on a 10 Mb service but get sub 1 Mb performance. There is a small minority of customers who want to download 100's of Gb per month who will spoil the internet experience of the masses who are quite content with capped 10 Mb or slower uncapped speeds.

NTL have tried to cover the needs of the vast majority of their customers. 10 Mb with a 75 Gb cap and 512k uploads should satisfy the gamers and those who occasionally want large files downloaded or uploaded as fast as possible. 2 Mb or lower with unlimited usage should satisfy those who don't want to clock watch their usage.

Will you be the first one to post when your 10mbit connection is then coming in at 30KB/sec cos everybody has no limits and is downloading everything they can find on News-Servers, P2P, running Server and god knows what else? Here is a little test to try at home:

Set up a Machine to share some files
Get as many people connected to your Wireless router (aim for 200)
Get them all to grab large files at the same time from that one machine.
Ask them what speeds they are getting :)

Cant argue with the point that ntl appears not to be outperforming telewest, telewest and ntl both have saturated ports at linx, but the difference is I sort of expect it from telewest since they are uncapped and I dont expect it from ntl. I have heard of no saturated ports for any of the adsl isp's.

probably not enough users on the high speed adsl services for it to get saturated

capped or uncapped is not relevant as number of users is what causes it not whether they are capped, there is no difference to 100 capped 10meg users accessing the same point as 1000 1meg users it still has the same amount of traffic

woaahhh only been away a week and its total chaos here among the allways entertaining cap thread, everyones running round without a clue whats going on or whats going to happen

!!! am I capped now arnt I capped !!!
!!! ntl are going to be doing this or theyre doing that !!!

the BIG QUESTION is when does the paying public get to know how they stand. Are all 1mb and 2mb going to be unlimited or not (personally I wouldnt need or expect 10mb unlimited,I dont think many people would need that)

ntl dont even seem to know whats going on,youve got so many people not touched with any overuse policy then another set of users dropped to 512k and Everyones paying different prices for different packages none of us have a clue what we are on and if and how much we are capped.

The people on the phone lines dont have a clue what to tell you if youve issues regarding what package you have or should have.

I was 512k for about 5 weeks - phoned up and said I repeatedly over used my connection but was told I would be charged less at £17.99 than the £24.99 I had been paying. Now I'm back upto 1mb and don't have a clue what I'll be charged for December ?

I was more than happy to take my punishment and use the 512k unlimited package till the footie season ended.

have ntl realized what they'll be losing monthly by putting people on lower cost packages and double backed the whole idea on caps ?

have the jolly public caught onto the fact that even being unlimited 512k is better than capped at 30gb-75gb per month and take up of the higher speeds not doing so well ?

Well under normal circumstances I turn my machine off when not using it. What I am saying is that if it means going down to a lesser speed I'll leave it on until i have downloaded whatever it is i want. I don't need to sit here watchig the download indicator.

My other point is that the more people signing up for a services must produce revenue that can be ploughed back into infrastructure to cover bandwidth.

Family of 4, listen to internet radio, download softwre, music, video and other stuff, online gaming websites getting more bandwidth intensive. Watch HDTV trailors etc etc.... When they do this I will actually be VERY GRATEFUL to be getting a better service than the one I started with which was 128k.Here I will be on 1MB unlimited for the same price as I was on 128k. :tu::cleader::cleader::cleader:

Yes, there are a lot of bandwidth eating applications about. But seriously do all four family members do all of these things non-stop for extensive periods every day? Whatever you download needs watching, listening to or playing at some time. Where does the time for doing these things come from out of what is left when you take away hours needed for work, school, housekeeping, shopping. watching TV and normal DVD's, listening to normal radio and CD's, etc?

There is no difference if (a) the capping is enforced and they spread out their downloading. (b) all the 1meg users rape their connection 24/7

What you just said is flawed in many ways eg. you can have a cap in place but if everyone uses their bandwidth at the same time you still need to provision capacity to handle the load, and of course if their is a higher burst speed then the provisioning needs to be at a higher level to handle it. Personally I find the saturated linx port issue not to be the blame of the leechers but rather then isp not upgrading to keep up with customer growth, if a isp has pipes that are filling up they have 3 options, they can either upgrade, implement limits on their users (caps) or just leave it. NTL have done a cross of caps and just leaving it since they are not really enforcing it properly and telewest have just left it. But fact is if you have a growing customer base you have to increase your capacity to go with it, blaming it solely on heavy users is an easy way out, and hoping the traffic flow will drop with a customer base thats growing is not going to happen.

Bah, if you're capped and you feel it isn't high enough for you, just get a wireless NIC and find one of your neighbours who has an insecure wireless network setup, and then steal their bandwidth from them.

Customer service = paid flat rate
Sales = On commision
Retentions = On commision (sort of)

So ask youself which 2 departments are going to bending the rules to help you out? The ones that it benefits to do so of course.....

Is 1mb/2mb truly unlimited and if so are they putting/allowing users back on those tiers who were put onto 512 unlimited as a punishment for going over the caps? If not then why not? If they really are serious about 1/2mb unlimited and have the capacity to support truly unlimited usage for those two tiers then surely there wouln't be a problem with moving those users back up and indeed gaining more revenue from 2mb. I have a feeling there will still be a get out clause in the T&C's that allows NTL to dump you if you use too much bandwidth. Sounds like they've dumped the majority of very heavy users on 512 or they've left and now can offer "unlimited" servers to the remaining people who don't use that much capacity anyway. Call me synical but that's the only explanation I can think of for such a radical turn-around.

Lets be honest NTL are slow when it comes to this. All they are doing is what they should have done a long time ago. and they expect us to be greatfull!

Why bring out a 10MB connection when they don't have their exsisting products in line with current prices etc!

Sort out what you got already before spending more money and uping our bills to pay for it!

People who agree with NTL say ohhh but you have to pay £10.50 for the phone line. OK I can agree with that but lets be honest in todays day and age we want or need them anyway!

I for one want & need a phone line so I pay that regardless!

ADSL BB is only 16.99 a month for 2MB unlimited, And before you say fair use policy they do have one of these but it is not in any form of cap! see http://www.toucan.com/products/toucansurf/2meg-2gbc.asp

Even with the unlimited comming, and I think its a good start but £24.99 for a 2MB connection is a rip off regardless if it's unlimited.

Ignition 16-12-2005 16:55

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

No obviously no cap there...

Quote:

*We don't apply any formal limits to the amount of data you up/download with ToucanSurf broadband. However, we may restrict over-use by heavy users by, for example prioritising traffic from light users during peak periods. See our Fair Usage Policy for more details
....

I'd check the quality of the services as well as the small print if I were you. Certainly 2Mbit unlimited can be offered at a sub-£20 / month price point, will it be any good? Well if it's supplied via BT Wholesale, either probably not or it'll come with traffic shaping.

Is it really that long ago that 2Mbit was a massive novelty that these days an unlimited version is a rip off at £25 / month? Guess so.

I can only speak for myself but from what I can make out theyve moved me back to 1mb after being on 512k for around 4-5 weeks, that said they never dropped my monthly charge so maybe I was lucky and have managed to somehow limbo under any long term limit.

If the caps have been dropped for all I'd like to thank ntl :tu: and say sorry towards a few members here if maybe once or twice I've got too personal towards peoples views here. All I can say is this is fine news hopefully for everyone Ive nothing against companys making money as long as the paying public get what they pay for.

Sure I'll get months where I do over use my connection other months I wont, thats why bringing the caps in over summer holidays when my 4 kids where off didnt help matters for me.

Ive never once faulted ntls allways on stable service and my family will be happy enough pottering about with 1mb unlimited. No doubt we'll be better on a stable connection like ntl at 1-3mb than on bulldog or likewise unstable upto 8mb which can be as low as 1mb.Fine news for 2006 all involved.Hope this lasts at least on smaller speed packages. If nothing else saves me getting 3 services from 3 different companys with my phone/cable/net being together.

:Peaceman: peace out hopefully from this cap thread forever.

Four years ago NTL was providing me with 56k dial-up FREE of charge. To be cheaper than that NTL would have to pay me to take broadband.:D

When you consider broadband prices in different countries you have to make allowances for things like their average wage and the topography of the country. They may pay less per month than the UK in straight exchange rate conversion but have to work more hours to earn that amount. South Korea for example has the majority of its population living in high rise blocks in the six main cities. Very easy to wire up for broadband unlike the UK which is very spread out with thousands of miles of road to dig up to supply cable.

We'll see ;) That price point isn't viable for anything other than a restricted or traffic shaped service, it's costing them a tenner and more a month to supply the service before you actually download anything. Add that to the multi-million pound a year costs of the BT interconnects to actually supply the bandwidth and you soon see why I'm rather skeptical of any provider's ability to provide at that price.

Check out E7Even's section on ADSLGuide for a hint of what happens when you sell too cheaply.

Really NTL you shoot yourself in the foot every F**kin day. And potentially such a good company. Increase the limit of the 10mb service to unlimited and the country will sign up in droves.

NTL are offering two choices. Fast speed, but capped. Slower speed but uncapped.

NTL do not have the facilities to offer 10 Meg Uncapped, and, at £34.99 per month, it would not be financially viable for them to do this.

But Telewest can & do offer 10mb unlimited for the same price.
They are a smaller company & have a smaller pool of customers & therefore revenue.
This is one question i have never seen a really satifactory answer too.
Come to that they also offer 4mb unlimited for £19.99 for the fist 3 months then i think it goes to £25

Would explain why they not ending in .00 or .99 then but proves my point even more what a viable price seems to be needed to not have issues.

---------- Post added at 19:07 ---------- Previous post was at 19:00 ----------

I back stuart and ignition up here, it is stupid comparing to what the likes of telewest offer when it isnt viable. £24.99 for unlimited 2meg is a great deal for the consumer, at the low end people can compare this to plusnet's massively unviable bb+ package which has stupid levels of shaping applied to it and it was recently exposed on adslguide that their actual contention may be as high as 135:1 for them to sell at that price. http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat...b=5&o=0&fpart=

More viable prices are zen and even their prices are apperently subsidised heavily by their business customers, BT themselves have recently been sending out bill's to their customers. LLU isp's like ukonline and bulldog can price lower and be viable but that service is very heavily distance dependant.

I'm actually stunned that 1Mbit is going to be "unlimited" - with whatever reservations are actually applied!

I considered 512k unlimited to be a damn good deal at that price point.

I was expecting them to roll out 512k, 1M and 2M unlimited, at the price points also covered by 1M (with a bit more than 3Gb), 10M low quota and 10M high quota.

The lowest tier MUST be 1Mbit or less, of course, otherwise they'd have to replace all the old PACE STB broadbands with Samsung or cablemodem - perhaps that's why it's so generous to the lowest tier, as they don't want the installation cost of upgrading to many of the lowest tier users, many of whom won't actually turn into download junkies overnight.

27th November Two to Simulcast

BBC Two will be simulcast via broadband from next year, channel controller Roly Keating has confirmed.

Earlier this year the corporation announced that it would be making one of its main stations available over the internet as part of a drive to increase content availability over new media platforms.

We will start at the website - upgrade that and move it in to broadband, Keating confirmed at Broadcast's commissioning conference in Manchester. We want to have as full a service as possible.

The BBC is also trialling the BBC iMP, an on-demand service that allows viewers to download recently-aired programmes to their home computers.
Found this tonight, looks like NTL 10mb customers will get to see only a couple of hours of programmes this way and then I expect we will have reached the cap!

With caps in place I just can't see this kind of innovation taking off in the UK

There was a line in it which mentioned 'free upgrade to 10mb' next year on the broadband service as being another reason to stick with NTL. I couldn't find any small print or anything else which went into more detail - So I assume the plan is still to upgrade the remaining 2 tiers to 10mb next year otherwise it wouldn't have said 'next year' and it would have been specific about the tier.

I agree with you slowcoach on that electron microscope comment,so sly when companys do that, most us here probably understand what speeds and capacity mean its the poor newcomers to the net who get burned with false advertising like that, their tv advert is bold white letters on black background advertising the £9.99 price and I'm sure theres no disclaimer saying just for the 1st 1gb downed.I'm actually so glad I stuck to my guns and kept on ntl now.

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

£9.99 is far from viable and just a price to lure people in and they will pay more once they hit the 1 gig, their will only be 2 categories of users on that. The ones who dont use it which will be profitable and the ones who use it and go voer and ultimately pay more then 9.99.

The fixed line rental is charged at £10.50 per month (same as BT), the total of this is not included in our monthly or yearly cost as you need a BT line to get other Broadband providers services
No you don't you liars - there is no BT line in my house, and I have 10 meg broadband.
