I currently pay £10/month for my TiVo subscription and I don't think many people would be happy to pay any more than that for a PVR.

My only concern with the PVR is the EPG. Will it be more than 3 days worth of data, and will it be able to be updated during the day should schedules change at the last minute? Will it have TiVo like feature, such as season passes (series links) that are permanent to catch new series, will we be able to set record keywords or record by specifying an actor, etc.?

Just a few things I doubt anyone will be able to answer at this time. :)

Re: PVR for NTL

i'd pay more for a PVR and i think alot on this board would as well..

the problem here is that alot of people won't know what a PVR is but will know what Sky + is.. this will need to be marketed very well to make sure the benefits and wha the service is actually are

100 Day Challenge

Can ntl deliver firm prices and a launch date within a 100 days?

Sky+ will be £1 before xmas

Tick tock

By February 1st?

I sincerely doubt the details will have been announced publicly by then, but we shall see.

How long should we expect to wait?

pvr is growing and if Mr J Public is unaware it may come on ntl, they will go elsewhere.

Then, that customer is lost generally forever.

As you put it so eloquently, testcard - tick, tock.

How many customers are ntl going to lose to Sky+ in Sky's Christmas push, simply because ntl haven't told those customers that a similar* function is "coming soon" on cable?

* leave aside whether it'll be better, worse or whatever; at the moment, that's irrelevant. To anyone who doesn't get investor briefings and doesn't read these forums, there's absolutely no suggestion of anything like Sky+ coming from ntl.

that is a good point.:tu:

You can, of course, get PVR solutions for NTL, now, using suitable hardware/software on a PC, but, again, not everyone is fully aware of that, or wants to rely on their PC for watching TV :)

Re: PVR for NTL

Well what ever ntl do they better hurry up. If VOD or PVR on demand isn't here in Coventry by 2006 there are plenty of new better offerings on the horizon that will make ntl look more like a third world outfit as far as multichannel tv is concerned. Thats if this artical is to believed. Been with NTL over 5 years and apart from the speed being upgraded there really as been nothing to sing and dance about. Infact even the speed upgrade don't mean much when you want VOD films and video over broadband but are restricted from doing so because of the bandwidth useage caps. The last lost making revenue from me to NTL was the phone line cut and voip installed call packages half the price that NTL charge and more select services and caller id free and that actually work. Next month 12 month TV contract ends we have PVR here and now all be it free view but its a very enjoyable experiance all the same. In a year time when VOD and films over the net come online who know we may even need a new unlimited cable supplier. Come on NTL I want to spend my money and stay with you but what can you offer an match at the same or reduced price as anyone else. As a customer over the years I've invested in NTL in the hope that any profits would be ploughed back into investing into to better packages and new inovation but sadly be human one gets a little impatience. Especially when all those on VOD come here to rub those of us who are well down on NTL's list noses in it.

Well said Bywater, I agree with all your points, I am patiently waiting for both VOD and a PVR. It won't be long before I walk and the fact that people on here who are already enjoying VOD are making fun of those that don't is making me even more eager to leave the sinking ship!!:(

ntl.wotcha 31-10-2005 15:24

Re: PVR for NTL

Yep I agree. Time is fast running out.

Personally I have less and less time these days to watch scheduled TV and with a baby on the way in April I will have even less chance to catch broadcast programming. I need a PVR and quick.

Not only are NTL at risk of losing to Sky+ and Freview PVR systems, we have just round the corner Xbox 360 Windows Media Centre and no doubt downloadable premium content. You already have the likes of Apple in the frame for delivering content and with Bill Gates vision of a future where all media is downloaded or streamed from the net it's not going to be long before it's a reality. (it already is a reality if you count illegal downloading).

So long and short is, it better be first half 2006 and not end 2006/2007.

I would also like to make a plea on the pricing. Please let it be an option for those on base pack. I don't want to have to buy movies or sport premium channels to get a PVR service.

I don't wish to shatter your illusions of impending fatherhood, but if you think loss of time to watch broadcast TV is bad, just wait and see what happens to your evenings at home with a good video/DVD/whatever.

Trust me, you don't need a PVR. You will need a very comfy bed and a strategy for coping with sleep depravation. ;)

Indeedy - On>Demand has made the purchase of PPV on NTL a reality again, I can pause rewind, just like a DVD. Prior to this PPV was pointless as if our son decided he needed some attention it was game over for the movie.

Funnily enough I think Ntl are quite happy about the speed of the rollout.

It was never, ever going to be rolled out across the whole of the network in one go.

I have no doubt people in the first area to be done are happy, people in NTL shouldn't be happy whilst it's taken a year to do roughly half and there's no timetable to finish!:disturbd:

bywater - I live in Coventry and I got a letter from NTL a few weeks ago, it mentioned the price rises for Sky channels and it also said that VOD was coming 'to your area very soon'.

Of course, 'coming soon' could mean this time next year, so....

So NTL gets a lambasting when they announce a product and then can't abide by the dates they set, and they get a lambasting when they decide to be honest and refuse to confirm a date.

Seems they can't win.

Re: PVR for NTL

If you're like me, someone who has been a dedicated NTL customer for years, and who just wants a method of recording TV without all the restrictions that currently exist, it just dosen't go down well, when you ask "When can I expect to get VOD or a PVR ?" and the reply you get is " We are not telling you!" " But anyway, my VOD is brilliant and we want more shows available etc".

There's a deal of secrecy "clickyness" and "I am alright jack" in this forum and other NTL forums and I as a customer am not happy about it. All I want to know is when abouts my VOD will be available, cos if someone says next year then I am off. That's not too much to ask is it? I am not the only one who feels like this either.!

i agree all people are asking for is the same as all other platforms have it isnt a lot to ask for, sky have had A PVR for years and freeview at least one year why are we being held back .i personally belive its simply that the NTL execs honestly belive that The VOD is better and that once we have that we wouldnt want a PVR . now if the roll out was a little quicker ( i apreciate that its a big job to enable it and not just a switch flick) i am sure some people would be happy and i do belive its a great idea, but i like a lot of people like to choose what i watch not what people think i want to (i do get the double standard there but you know what i mean). basiclly this VOD roll out as with the software upgrade feels like it is taking for ever for example it will be this time next year before the VOD roll out is complete and we still wont have any sign of a PVR while sky will have there HD out .which is in four months time and knowing how long sky have taken in setting that up (6 months and its already broadcasting) it kind of makes our little cable platform seem pathetic

i think what annoys me the most is i want NTL to be better than sky as somone needs to be

Have you not heard of NDAs or confidentiality agreements?

dextercat 01-11-2005 12:12

Re: PVR for NTL

Firstly, I don't want to upset any NTL employees, they have helped me in the past and I am grateful to them. Confidential agreements , yes, I understand, (NDA's?) the point is, however, it doesn't change what I am hearing/reading on these forums.

Perhaps I am trying (in vain probably) to get at the people that make the policy decisions etc i.e. to say that we won't tell people when they can get VOD or we won't tell people about the PVR. The biggest thing I feel sore about is about the restrictive nature of the service provided i.e. one STB with analogue only available (when its digital) and no reliable way to change channel for recording, no way to record more than one channel (unless you pay £15/month for another box) etc etc. This is so restrictive and below what sky offers its silly.

I don't want to desert NTL but it feels like I have no choice, and when I try to see if it is worth staying or not, I get this secrecy and clickyness and nose rubbing in, can anyone see my point?,:disturbd:

Andy C 01-11-2005 13:07

Re: PVR for NTL

I think ntl should have done things the other way around... get the PVR out to catch up and then concentrate on VOD. I can understand why ntl did VOD first as it's something that Sky do not offer (at least not at this time), however have you heard anyone saying they are leaving Sky for ntl due to VOD?

On the other hand, due to the wait we will be getting what appears to be quite an advanced PVR system. That is, if ntl enable all the features and get a reliable UI/EPG running.

I, for one, am very much looking forward to it.

First of all you have not upset me, I think a quick explanation is in order. I and others on this board have not as far as i can see rubbed anyone's nose in it.

If you want me to have a job next week then i don't think you want me or any other member of staff on this board to break the NDA.

There are a few on this board who to be frank are a joke and sooooo childish it sometimes makes me life for hours when they come out with the NTL will never do this and NTL coming soon as if they have a inside information line direct to the top office . There is one wally on this board who i think it was "come on this is NTL there will not be a pvr till 2016" and he still has not taken up my bet . Now when someone comes out with bull**** like that i try in a round about way to give a answer that does not break the NDA.Sometimes we can sometimes we cannot.

Sometimes if it is complete bull**** then a simple no that is not correct will give some idea if they are right or wrong.

I for one will NEVER release information that is not in the public domain on this board. The admins and mods of this forum now have a close working relationship with NTL and are given information when he is ready to be released.

As for VOD due to the nature of the installation and roll out there is no way i believe to have a "this area this week and that area next week " type of list.

If members of this board are willing to listen to the bull**** artists then fine. But i know i would take some of the bull**** on here with a pince of salt.

BTW

This post was not intended to upset anyone and if it has then SORRY :D

I don't think anyone on any forum would want any NTL employee to breach a Non Disclosure Agreement. I want NTL to officially disclose something - anything - and not just "coming soon". For pity's sake, say something to make me want to stay as an NTL customer !!

Tristan 01-11-2005 21:44

Re: PVR for NTL

I have long wondered why it is that NTL feel that they can't reveal target dates for fear of being chastised when they don't meet them, when Telewest are perfectly happy to do so. For several months now, you have been able to put your postcode into the Telewest website and (if you are in a TW are, of course) it will give you a four-week window within which VOD is scheduled to arrive. Then everyone's happy; the customer gets some idea of when it's due, and Telewest have a large margin of error to sort out any problems.

Now, a challenge for anyone who works for NTL: tell me why they can't do the same.

garyparson 02-11-2005 19:20

Re: PVR for NTL

Of course NTL want to roll (although roll suggests some kind of movement) out the VOD before a PVR. How much does a PVR make every time you record something? Zip. VOD is just another way to fill their pockets. NTL/C&W/Nynex have had plenty of money off me, it's about time they started giving me a service that they promised from the start. Something better than Sky.

Coming soon is just not good enough any more. I know that Sky are going to try and release HDTV in January next year, why, cos they tell everyone. Bit of comunication, nothing wrong with that. It's nice to know when things are going to happen, weather they do or not. At least it gives you a clue. Better than being kept in the dark and contantly being told 'coming soon'. Get a grip NTL. Must do better.

The last Sky HD E-Mail I got (yesterday) had nothing on it about a launch date. Same with their HD Website.

All it mentions is 2006 for a target. And the latest rumours I've been hearing takes it till about March or April time for it.

So really setting out a firm date there aren't they? :dozey:

Yeah, they worked hard to make sure that announcement appeared on the front page of every paper
Mr J Public doesn't read the TV trade press, listen to NTL conference calls or read this forum. He does see adverts for Sky+ at £49, and Argos selling Freeview PVRs for next to nothing. And from NTLs slick marketing machine? Guess what I'd be thinking of for Christmas.....

Initially they were trying for getting them into the shops for Christmas. Then early next year. Now it seems to have dropped back to April or March time.
So it's a case of 'coming soon' from Sky then. But thats OK because they are not Ntl.

I'm not a huge fan of Ntl but to be honest if you can provide me with one post you've made where you aren't complaining about the sound quality or something else I'd be very surprised.

  • NTL go to a proper IR Signal for their remotes
  • Red button doesn't cause box to crash
  • at least 1 weeks EPG
  • PVR that works
  • Interactive TV as on Freeview/Sky (football 1st etc)
  • Be no more expensive than Sky

You get the same interactive coverage on the BBC channels as Sky now. Funnily enough the main differences are on the Sky owned channels

Done. The Langley Pace boxes and all Samsung boxes use RC5 instead of the TWTV protocol (a version of IrDA).

Mostly done. It's certainly a lot more reliable than before. However, red button applications can cause any STB to crash - cable, satellite or DTT: that's the nature of computers. We can never guarantee 100% reliability.

This mostly depends on Sky (with regards to Football First, certainly). They hold the rights, and so we must negotiate with them to obtain the right to distribute the programming via cable.

Done - and have been for some time. In fact, cable is often cheaper than Sky as the Sky price increase is usually absorbed by ntl for a period of months each year.

I had question time before I left Ntl. Whether this was only for a few shows I'm not sure as it isn't normally in my required viewing for the week.

So overall you don't get the News24 multiscreens. You do get the football, proms, wimbledon, special events like D-Day, chelsea flower show etc.

Yep so thats virtually everything else you don't get.

vileda 03-11-2005 13:57

Re: PVR for NTL

Has it been changed so that the multiscreens are available via the red button, I seem to remember having to retune to channel 900 or something for some special event.

For things like wimbledon, proms etc. there is a red button prompt available on the BBC channel.

Yes, because they are giving months, not years. I don't care how many times it get's put back, at least we know when they are trying to do it for.

I'd have moved to sky ages ago as they always seem to be ahead of NTL on every count tv wise. I have this belief that cable should be a lot better than sky and should have been better ages ago. I hold out that one day they'll pull their fingers out their backsides and move quicker than a slow thing on slow day in slowsville.

I'm still waiting. (or should that be 'coming soon')

PVR aka sky+ is the kippers elbows.

ntl does not have or will have this service in the realistic future.

This a massive minus for ntl in the coming year.

Whatever the cost, it seems you have to pay for NTL's tel line whether you want / use it or not; if you don't use it, tough, you still have to pay for it. I don't understand why Ofcom let NTL away with monopolistic practices like this. So it's easy to argue that it costs over £50 pm to get NTL's TV service.

We've been over this before. It's not monopolistic, as they are not the only supplier. It is not stifling competition as BT is more than willing to take your business if you don't want the ntl phone line. If you want to have both services, that's your choice. The fact that when you take ntl TV, you have to take ntl phone does not make them a monopoly. OFCOM & their predecessors have said this repeatedly, and if you disagree why not write to them and see what they have to say?

Maybe monopoly is the wrong word, but I do think it's wrong that they are allowed to enforce a bundled deal like this. Perhaps it's a matter for the OFT, rather than Ofcom.

But back to the point: having to take the bundle means that it costs over £50 pm to get all channels on NTL's TV service.

SMHarman 05-11-2005 17:22

Re: PVR for NTL

But to get the sky bundle you have to have the STB plugged into a phone socket (and they have set it up in a way you cannot use a VOIP phone line) so you have to pay BT £11 a month for that line (or NTL or TW) so you really have to add that price onto the Sky price as without dial in Sky put their costs up significantly.

 "Coming Soon"

That's the issue I have. I am forced to pay for a telephone I neither want nor use apart from when my broadband goes down as I will use the ntl line for the dial-=up broadband for my laptop.

I personally feel I am being ripped off by this and being forced to pay neck end of £50 for family and Sky Sports whereas I'd pay less than £40 on Sky, get a load more TV and radio channels, interactive apllications that are remotely useful (news 24i, Sky Newsi, Sky Sportsi) and actually work and get Sky+ for free - all for a tenner less!

I accept that Sky requires access to a phone line, but not a dedicated phone line. You can't simply add the cost of the line rental onto Sky's price.

Assume I'm already paying for a landline service that I'm perfectly happy with. If I want to add Sky's digital TV service, it'll cost me £42.50 (from an earlier post); if I want to add ntl's equivalent TV service, it'll cost me £52.50 (from another post). The fact that ntl provide and charge for another phone line - that I didn't ask for and don't want - doesn't change the price, it's still £10 dearer.

SMHarman 05-11-2005 23:25

Re: PVR for NTL

But if your phone requirement is a POTS line, then you can port your phone number over to NTL and ditch BT.
My frustration that I was on a BT ISDN HH line prior to the NTL BB/BT ADSL meant I could not port the number as NTL could not offer the same service but expected me to pay for the same service, not anymore, at the moment it is apathy and too many other bigger tasks.

But as I said Sky won't work on a VOIP line, so you could realistically have an NTL BB line, Sky + and a VOIP phone (dixons, vonage) and plug the sky modem into that, but being as Sky negotiate a 56k connection only (and VOIP cannot do that) it will not connect. At the moment not a problem, but there is lobbying for BT to provide naked DSL lines.

You cannot use PPV services (beyond £50) without a phone line as it needs to call the bill home (the return path on NTL does this). Where you get sky multiroom all boxes have to call home from the same CLI line to prove to Sky that they are all in the same house, else you could get multiroom and give the second box to your mate.
And being an NTL customer, to prove i'm not making this up.

On the second point, I'm willing to raise you to £50 to charity, that NTL will have a PVR service before Sky has a BB service, or should that be a proper VOD service? The reason, Sky should be quicker to market with HD as they only have to change what they uplink from one head end to the Astra sat, PVR requires funamentally more work than that.

*ALL* Sky packages require you to have the box permenantly connected to the phoneline for the first year for you to qualify for any introductory offers.

So no, you don't *have* to have it connected -- but if you don't, you'll be lumbered with a £200 bill for a Sky digibox (even more for Sky+), no free installation, no free Sports or Movies, etc etc etc....

Perhaps, when you take the picture, you ought to zoom in on the small print a little more ;)

I already know what you're saying, but I was looking at it from a mis selling point of view.

With regard zooming in on the picture, it was not an official type of wording in the " requires no phone " it looked as if the guy had just got a piece of everyday card and written on it in green marker, and I was close enough not to need the zoom so defo no small print.;)

Sorry bud, the bet was over pvr vs hd television, not broadband.
Certain people here seem very confident that pvr will be rolled out to everyone quite soon, sky are saying they will be putting out hd next year, regardless of infrastructure required my offer is still there, £10 that ntl will not have pvr rolled out to all customers before sky put out HD.

If NTL pull it off I will gladly give a tenner to cancer research, anyone else ?

Telewest plans DVR, HDTV launch for early 2006

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds26156.html

Telewest is to become the first operator to launch HDTV into the UK.

The company has outlined plans for 'TV Drive', a new DVR product that will be available to all Telewest subscribers within the first quarter of 2006 and a "selected" number of customers next month.

The set-top box will boast three tuners - one more than Sky's PVR product, Sky+ - allowing viewers to simultaneously record two programmes while watching a third. It features a 160Gb hard drive, enabling up to 80 hours of storage.

TV Drive will cost an extra £10 to £15 per month, depending on the services taken. The existing set-top box can be kept as a second unit for £5 per month or, from later in 2006, for a one-off payment.

The HDTV service will launch at the same time as the DVR product, giving it a three to four month jump on Sky's planned offering. Telewest CFO Neil Smith revealed that movie and drama content had already been signed from Pathé and the BBC but refused to elaborate further on planned HD programming.

Meanwhile, the company will also launch a VOIP service in 2006 and - post merger with NTL - will explore becoming a "quad-play" provider with a new mobile service.

Well the money is still on the table ;)

It's all propaganda to keep up the interest, imo.

Funnily enough the above comment was about Telewest and not Ntl. They haven't merged just yet.

But hey don't let that stop you sticking the knife in and trying to put them down. Although in fairness at least you didn't mention your popping sound (for once)

It is not a bad thing sticking your finger in every pie available, it is just that when it involves someone paying for the service, it helps if it works before it comes out, I do hear there are problems with the VOD ? regarding the people who are sampling it? take this sample figure of problems, do nothing about it, mass produce the product, hand them out to all who want them and you have bigger problems which leads to poor customer satisfaction which in turn leads to cancellations, which leads to money problems for NTL or any company who take exactly the same route.

Interesting quote for ya, about BBC HD trials (lifted from another forum so not sure of exact source)...

Quote:

The BBC will simulcast some of its most popular programmes in the HD format from next year, it was announced today.

Under the plans, "highlights" of BBC One's primetime schedule will air in HD to a limited audience of early adopters.

The twelve month trial will involve all three platforms - satellite, cable and terrestrial - as and when the respective HDTV services launch. Sky is expected to be first off the block with a premium HDTV launch in April while the newly-merged NTL and Telewest will follow at the end of 2006.

This is, of course, broadcast HDTV. There is nothing whatsoever stopping NTL/TW doing HD VOD before this, and I beleive Telewest have stated that they're going to offer this first.

In a couple of months that comment will be as irrelevant as you.

I won't cos they deserve it every time. I'm entitled to my opinion, if you like it or not. That's just tough.

That's cos they took three years to fix something that wasn't broke til they cocked it up. If it affects me, and it did, i'll complian til i get a working service that i'm paying near £100 a month for. It's my right. End of.

I await your drivel.

Telewest goes live with HDTV

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/12...ive_with_hdtv/

Telewest has become the first British company to deliver a live HDTV (High Definition TV service) service. Starting from today it is offering a limited High Definition service to a select group of 400 viewers in south London. The service will be rolled out across the Telewest franchise early next year. Telewest hasnâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t put a date on when it will available nationwide but it is likely to be before the summer.

Not all Telewest customers have VoD. ntl in fact has more VoD-enabled customers than Telewest. The Telewest PVR (with HDTV output) has been released to 400 triallists in London, with a more widespread rollout in Q1 2006.

In the meantime, NTL aren't even talking about which year they will launch a PVR in..
