So if you've got an SD tv , you'll lose loads of channels?? Unless I've misunderstood. Got a small portable that has sd/freeview.
Certainly not bothered about the likes of Challenge, but Film4, C5?

This only applies to VM, where all equipment is HD ready. Having SD variants just isn't viable. I feel Sky and Freesat will be next, closing down SD channels.

Well thats ok for the moment then !
Could be a terrible ecological waste if all the sd tvs in the country have to be binned.

You need to come to terms with the new century, Mr K. Have you not had your fill of the old stuff yet?

The new stuff isn't much good OB. Being in HD or UHD doesn't make the content any better.

My point about SD tvs is if they are working fine, why get rid? (just like anything else that works). On a small tv definition makes diddly squat difference.

The last time I looked at the capacity map, which is just a graphical indication of slots available on each transport stream, there weren't any issues with adding extra HD channels. Of course, the addition of 3 extra UHD slots has filled up a lot of that space. Probably why the SD channel cull has been timed to coincide with this. My guess is that there will be a big housekeeping exercise after the removal, with some transport streams being opened up for new HD channels. It will be interesting to look at the capacity map after Tuesday's removals, or a week or so later when Virgin gets around to cleaning up any remnants of the SD channels (and after any info slates have been removed).

But, to answer your question, there are no visible tests at the moment for the channels you mentioned. However, it would be a good time for Virgin to start SD > HD conversions following Tuesday's changes. (Being a good time to start this doesn't necessarily mean it will happen).

It appears Sky vacated slots - 136-138 aren't getting reused from Tuesday but others are for some reason, unknown whether ITV1 SD will removed from 113.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

Okay, I'll repost what I said on DS as it will be difficult for you guys because of the graphics.

A list of HD channels changing slots is now available on the discovery bar.

EPG Service
106 E4 HD
110 Sky Witness HD
111 Sky Max HD
112 Sky Comedy HD
115 ITV2 HD
117 ITV3 HD
118 ITV4 HD
119 ITVBe HD
121 Sky Crime HD
122 Sky Sci-Fi HD
123 Sky Arts HD
135 Pick
139 Challenge
140 Sky Arts
143 4Seven HD
147 More4 HD
154 Comedy Central Extra
156 Sky Replay
160 E! HD
163 Sky Witness +1
164 Sky Crime +1
266 National Geographic HD
278 Sky Nature HD
415 TCM Movies HD
428 Film4 HD
704 Cartoon Network HD
712 Nick HD

It doesn't list HD services keeping their existing EPG slot, such as Sky Showcase HD and Sky Documentaries HD or full details of SD services being removed (hiding removals such as Channel 5 (SD)).

Although Sky's +1 channels have been promoted up the EPG, other broadcaster's +1 channels haven't, so there are gaps such as TCM HD on 415 but TCM +1 unchanged on 417, Film 4 HD on 428 and Film 4 +1 unchanged on 430. Maybe they forgot to change them, list them, or could these timeshift channels also be culled? It isn't clear.

Sky Arts (SD) seems to be staying and getting a new slot, which is odd. Also, Sky's vacated slots on 136 to 138 don't seem to have been reused but their vacated slots at 139, 156, 160, 163 and 165 lower down the EPG have been, which is also odd.

No indication of whether ITV1 (SD) will be removed.

Also, it is being promoted on the discovery bar as "sharper telly, easier to find" - yeah, not really sharper telly, the HD channels aren't new, changing EPG slot doesn't make them sharper. Easier to find, maybe unless you memorised the old slots. https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2023/01/1.png

They don't seem to have left a space to add Sky Atlantic HD... who knew? https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2023/01/2.png

Also I'd expect most Virgin TV boxes are connected to HDTVs at least

Only the older TiVo boxes have SCART.

I hope not, there's more than enough scope for errors to made with the existing list of changes. Save it for another day.

Sky Arts SD is FTA on Freeview and Freesat so I'm not surprised it's sticking around for now.

In Scotland 113 has been empty since STV HD moved to 103. BBC3 has to be in Top 24 slots so I'm expecting it to take 113 in Scotland (and Wales maybe, depending on how their EPG lineup is).

Funnily enough, I had just made the same point about 113 on DS and maybe something could be done about the slot sharing arrangement for BBC Alba / ITV Be +1. STV SD was removed a long time ago though, so why wasn't BBC 3 moved earlier?

The Sky Arts situation is more about what isn't being disclosed on the discovery bar info. I get that Sky won't want the Mixit / M / Player version in HD but I can't see it staying in SD for users on levels in between. Sky Arts was originally in the Documentaries personal pick so the HD version could be made available to anyone with that. Probably better to put it in the Entertainment+ Tier though as the SD version is already available to basic level users. Same with Sky News HD, although there are no details at all of what will happen there. It will be interesting to see which subscription tiers the Sky channels fall into after the change.

A lot of SD channels with dual illumination (i.e. also available in HD) will be removed with the HD channels shuffled up to fill the gaps. I guess the HD channels will also have to change to the subscription packs used by the SD channels being removed or there will be a lot of phone calls from disgruntled customers.

Sky Entertainment in HD used to be one of the USPs with Maxit bundle, and not repicable via the Personal Picks.

It's not a surprising move all things taken, but this is a little bit of value being taken out of Maxit, also.

I'm wondering how many customers will now decide to switch to entertainment+whatever rather than staying on Maxit. It is a game changer, especially for customers not interested in BT Sport.

Because the change isn't happening until Tuesday. I doubt that Virgin will be paying their listings provider to replace the regular EPG listings with "channel no longer available" when the details of the channels moving is plastered all across the discovery bar.

Basically, yes. Although the channel no longer available listings are usually in place because the channel slot will still be available to display it. As the SD slots will be immediately reoccupied with HD channels (largely), after the channels have moved the "closure" listings would be replaced by listings for the active channel occupying the slot. There will probably be "Heads Up" popup / overlays for a while, informing viewers that the change has happened but doing it through the EPG is redundant when the slots are being reused.

I think that what happens to the subscription packs will be the most interesting part of Tuesday's changes. The Entertainment tier could be flooded with extra channels with the other sections becoming more specialised. Followed by an over the top price increase to justify the extra channels. Just one option, anything could happen.

Why would think that ? Also the channels are based A+E headquarters rather than Sky.

There still managed and operated by the A+E Networks UK team

So your list of missing channels may launch in the coming months on Virgin for all we know.

An interesting thought. So maybe if the government had an actual plan for broadcasting rather than random, badly thought out, plans that come to nothing such as the C4 privatisation, we may have had a Freeview service upgraded to DVB-T2 with more HD services as standard. Then everyone would be getting Sky Arts in HD. ;)

I don't know about Sky saying no but maybe you are onto something here and there could be more changes to come in phase 2. Or phase 3 if you take the clearance of channels in the upper 200s as phase 1, the start of the EPG housekeeping changes.

---------- Post added at 14:17 ---------- Previous post was at 14:09 ----------

A lot of SD channels with dual illumination (i.e. also available in HD) will be removed with the HD channels shuffled up to fill the gaps. I guess the HD channels will also have to change to the subscription packs used by the SD channels being removed or there will be a lot of phone calls from disgruntled customers.

Totally get what you are saying , banner just says hd is easier to find , SD channels are shown as far forward as the epg lets me go .

epsilon has posted the following on DS Forum about USID numbers:

Quote:

On April 6th 2022: "2256" for channel called "Test 1420" was added

Then on September 22nd 2022: "2260" for channel called "PPV PPC" (DAZN) leaving a gap from 2257-2259.

These slots was filled on January 20th with the 3 Sky Sports UHD that are testing right now on Virgin Media.

So Virgin did know the Sky Sports UHD channels was set to launch by September 21st 2022.

Disclosure: Gaps in the USID sequence don't always get filled

There have been some package changes in instances where the HD and SD versions remain.

Sky News is available in HD to more people, as is Sky Arts, as we now get the HD versions of both.

I've been asked around for confirmation on when the 3 Sky Sports UHD Channels may launch on Virgin but haven't received a response from some Sources yet.

But one sources did say they are expecting them to be added on Feb. 13th, the day of the Merseyside derby. Also the same day that Sky UK will launch Sky Kids HD.

'Virgin Media O2 gives thousands of TV customers HD upgrade at no extra cost'

Press release:

https://news.virginmediao2.co.uk/vir...no-extra-cost/

It is of course great news for those on the Player, Mix and Mixit packages, but for all Full House and Maxit customers they gain nothing yet pay the same. I can see some people 'downgrading' at their next renewal as there doesn't appear to be much value in these higher tiers now besides Virgin TV Ultra HD and the BT Sport channels.

There is over 100 FAST channels according to this press release so don't think that's likely.

I agree. I’ve tried them and it’s mostly junk. I think these FAST Channel may shine brightly for a while before they dim when people have had enough of them, but given that some people seem to be happy to watch whatever is on at the time, there may be enough of them who are quite happy to watch mind-numbing TV.

I still haven’t met anyone who admits to watching them and most have never heard of them, but some must be watching because they are certainly making money out of it. I suppose it’s not that surprising given that the content must be pretty cheap to buy.

SonicMaster 25-01-2023 13:08

The introduction of FAST channels to the VM EPG on 360 and Stream is just the addition of those already available on Pluto TV:

https://pluto.tv/en/

Therefore there is no mystery as to what content will be available or the quality of that.

These channels are already available to those with a V6 box via the Pluto TV app.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

Channel 4 has the EPG slots 104, 106 and the block 141 to 147 so could have:

104 Channel 4 HD

106 E4 HD

141 Channel 4 +1
142
143 E4 +1
144 E4 Extra
145 More4 HD
146 More4 +1
147 4Seven HD

141 is very easy to remember for Channel 4 +1 as is 147 for 4Seven HD.

142 is left vacant as I understand that E4 HD is on 106 on some sort of lease arrangement, so needs a position to return to should this end.

I think all HD changes this week was down to Virgin wanting the same lineup on all boxes.

I still can't in the hell of me think why Sky has given up three main channel numbers on Virgin this past week (Channels 136 to 138).

Rumour say Virgin selling the 3 slots to the higher bidders.

This week changes is just part one. I feel more EPG changes may follow in the coming months.

There is discussion going on on the community forum. Other people are ringing up & being told £7 a month on Ultimate Volt. People on other packages are being quoted more.

It's £4 extra if you've got Ultimate Volt with Sky Cinema & Entertainment UHD already.

If you don't it's £7 to add just Sky Sports UHD and £10 for both Sky Sports UHD and Sky Cinema & Entertainment UHD.

That's strange,I have Ulimate volt with Sky Cinema/ Entertainment and before he put it through, he told me that it would be £7

That was 2 hours ago and it's not showing on my 360 box yet

The current 'Sky Cinema and Sky Entertainment UHD' pick is £6 per month, so if they are adding an extra £4 to this for Sky Sports in UHD, making it £10 per month in total, that's actually pretty good value. I think the equivalent on Sky Q is £12 per month.

He then said he had activated it but he told me it's £7 a month not £4. So far, its not showing at all on my 360 box. What's going on here?

mine not activated yet either

I understand the £6 Cinema & Entertainment UHD add on is still available too.

That will depend on your bundle. If you're not on Ultimate Volt that includes Sky Sports HD as standard (whether or not you also get Cinema and Entertainment UHD) then to get Sky Sports UHD, you currently need both Sky Sports HD at £7 and Sky Sports UHD either for £7 on it's own or as part of the £10 combined add on.

Wow, VM do like to make it complicated!

The need for Sky Sports HD as an add on will be part of the Sky contract. The Sky Cinema HD add on was discontinued when it was possible to do so.

I don’t think anyone disputes the need for a charge, merely the complexity of it.

I wonder if we end up with two Ultimate Volts just as we had two Ultimate Oomphs. One with UHD as standard and one without.

We've already got that. The UHD add on was removed from Ultimate Volt back in November
