There are any number of ways a careful market researcher might attempt to tease out how, if at all, coronavirus has affected perceptions of the beer. This isn’t one of them. Instead, these questions manage to fail simultaneously in two different directions. On one hand, some of the phrasing (“In light of the coronavirus …”) implies a queasy connection between the virus and the beer that people might not have considered until they were polled.

On the other hand, the final three questions ― including the one responsible for that startling 38% statistic ― don’t explicitly mention coronavirus as a motivation at all. In other words, drinkers who said they wouldn’t buy Corona might simply have meant that they prefer to order a different brand of beer.

The much less eye-catching but entirely more plausible statistic is that, even “in light of the coronavirus,” just 4% of Americans who “usually drink Corona” say they “plan to stop” drinking it. Even here, the framing of the question is sloppy: If respondents “plan to stop,” doesn’t that imply they haven’t given it up yet?
Quote:

The real question is why this obscure poll would, even if it had been true, be able to capture the imagination of so many people. And the answer is as obvious as it is saddening: Clearly, a lot of Americans already think that their fellow citizens are stupid. The real reason a fake finding could have spread so far so quickly is that it confirmed prejudices about the world that many have held all along.

My recollection of Corona soft drinks was a wagon coming into the village where I lived at the time on a Tuesday (IIRC) and parked at the same place at the same time weekly. He did have multiple places over the day in the village and elsewhere (others up the road).

There was also another whose name I can't recall but was older (and most of the village used) who delivered in stone gallon jars that substituted as hot water bottles in winter.

BTW there was a drink called Iron Brew (from Stocks) which had an icon of a worker in a foundry weilding a sledgehammer. FU Barrs!

Re: Coronavirus

Latest from WHO.

https://www.who.int/dg/speeches/deta...--3-march-2020
Quote:

...We understand that people are afraid and uncertain. Fear is a natural human response to any threat, especially when it’s a threat we don’t completely understand.

But as we get more data, we are understanding this virus, and the disease it causes, more and more.

This virus is not SARS, it’s not MERS, and it’s not influenza. It is a unique virus with unique characteristics.

Both COVID-19 and influenza cause respiratory disease and spread the same way, via small droplets of fluid from the nose and mouth of someone who is sick.

However, there are some important differences between COVID-19 and influenza.

First, COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza, from the data we have so far.

With influenza, people who are infected but not yet sick are major drivers of transmission, which does not appear to be the case for COVID-19.

Evidence from China is that only 1% of reported cases do not have symptoms, and most of those cases develop symptoms within 2 days.

Some countries are looking for cases of COVID-19 using surveillance systems for influenza and other respiratory diseases.

Countries such as China, Ghana, Singapore and elsewhere have found very few cases of COVID-19 among such samples – or no cases at all.

The only way to be sure is by looking for COVID-19 antibodies in large numbers of people, and several countries are now doing those studies. This will give us further insight into the extent of infection in populations over time.

WHO has developed protocols on how these studies should be done, and we encourage all countries to do these studies and share their data.

The second major difference is that COVID-19 causes more severe disease than seasonal influenza.

While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.

Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.

Third, we have vaccines and therapeutics for seasonal flu, but at the moment there is no vaccine and no specific treatment for COVID-19. However, clinical trials of therapeutics are now being done, and more than 20 vaccines are in development.

And fourth, we don’t even talk about containment for seasonal flu – it’s just not possible. But it is possible for COVID-19. We don’t do contact tracing for seasonal flu – but countries should do it for COVID-19, because it will prevent infections and save lives. Containment is possible.

To summarize, COVID-19 spreads less efficiently than flu, transmission does not appear to be driven by people who are not sick, it causes more severe illness than flu, there are not yet any vaccines or therapeutics, and it can be contained – which is why we must do everything we can to contain it. That’s why WHO recommends a comprehensive approach.

These differences mean we can’t treat COVID-19 exactly the same way we treat flu...

I read (can't find the link at the moment) that other countries are re-testing people who died of what was thought to be pneumonia, but are now finding the COVID-19 in them.

Quote:

Translated version

The Valencian Community has confirmed the first patient killed by coronavirus in Spain. As reported by the Department of Sanitat Universal and Public Health on Tuesday afternoon at a press conference, a man died on February 13 due to severe pneumonia of unknown origin and a retrospective investigation has revealed that he had the Covid-19. This person was 69 years old and had recently traveled to Nepal.

The Minister Ana Barceló has detailed that a second analysis has detected the presence of the coronavirus in the patient, who died at the Arnau Hospital in Vilanova de València. This second test was carried out after a change in the criteria for defining cases that the Ministry did on February 27, and urged a second analysis of deaths due to pneumonia of unknown origin. It has not transcended the patient's age or if he had other diseases.

n addition, Sanitat has confirmed that there is a new active case in the community, a woman who has been detected at the Hospital de Manises. With this case, 19 people infected by coronavirus in the Valencian Community, being one of them the deceased.

This same Tuesday, Sanitat had confirmed two other new cases, those of two women who did not travel to risk areas but had been in contact with people who have previously tested positive. The two infections, according to the consellera, have been detected for the evidence established by the protocol established by the Ministry of Health from the confirmed cases. Both have mild symptoms and remain in home isolation.

If it’s all the same to you, I’ll stick with the medical professionals’ advice (which is a world away from panicking).

Quote:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
Washing your hands (properly) with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands, reducing the chances of catching/passing on the virus.

There were, and there are proposed solutions on the table for Flybe. I think what complicates matters now is if Flybe collapses *because* of Coronavirus. Over the whole course of this crisis, which is likely to last 3-6 months, they may well not be the only ones. So if el gov steps in to rescue Flybe, even on terms previously discussed, does that mean they have to step in and rescue any other business that fails? It’s a tricky one.

Virtually all businesses have an essential travel only policy currently in force.

Conferences and such like are being cancelled or delayed left, right and centre.

I was due to travel to business event in March and had to cancel, cancel the hotel and flights.

The 1% seems to be based on the Diamond Princess. The China figure is difficult to use because of the unknown number of infections in the early stages.

I suspect it could be as high as 5% when all is said and done. Currently many people compare the deaths to the total - ignoring that roughly 40% of those known to be infected presently have it and some won't make it.

I have family and friends over there, and the big worry is that the cost of testing, especially if you have no insurance, or a large co-pay or high deductible, means that people aren't reporting sick, and often going to work (because, and especially if you are in the service sector, you don't get many "sick days" or sick pay).

I think that, in the US, it will be under-reported, and that people with it will still be going to work (and as I said, in the service sector, such as shop assistants, restaurant workers, taxi drivers, etc.), and will have contact with lots of people.

Which is fun, because we are flying to Miami on Friday... :erm:

Just been to see mum-in-law, who moved into a care home just after Christmas (91yo with mild dementia and Alzheimers).

We were given a hand-out which requested not to hug/kiss/cuddle, as the elderly are especially vulnerable to the complications that would arise - also, lots of hand-cleanser for when you enter/leave the home.

Simon Calder is a highly respected travel journalist, not some random night shift hack. And I can’t see anything premature about his reporting on this. It’s a perfectly reasonable summary of what has happened (the company stopped selling tickets at 10pm) and what is likely to happen next (other airlines will pick up some of the routes).

Quote from The Sun: A former government official has sparked outrage today after claiming a coronavirus pandemic would be "useful" in killing off NHS bed blockers.

Professor June Andrews shockingly said the deadly bug would help take elderly people "out of the system".

Her controversial comments come after a British woman yesterday became the first patient to die in the UK after testing positive for the bug.

Fears are now growing that a British man has become the second person to die in the UK from the deadly bug.

The patient, aged in his 80s, is said to have died from the disease while being treated at Milton Keynes Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

Prof Andrews admitted what she said was "horrific" as she outlined the potential outcome of a widespread outbreak.
True but not really something that needed spelling out.

I would imagine the trolls are already mashing their keyboards.

Well I hate to blame the media.....however....if they reported things a bit more level headed and not like this was the apocalypse, people may not panic so much.

I also think a bit more leadership from Westminster wouldn’t hurt too.

People panic as they doubt they are being told the real truth and in all honesty those in higher positions have not exactly got a great record of telling the population the full truth as we have seen in previous events.

To be fair a supermarket is never a good place to be at teatime on a Friday, with people popping in to get some bits for the weekend on their way home from work. I’d always avoid it. And sharing anecdotes like this isn’t helpful - once some people are perceived to be panic buying, in a sense it then becomes rational for other people to do it before the shelves empty.

It always comes down to confidence. It was the same with Northern Rock. A bank, or a supermarket, never has everything all its customers might demand on the premises at the time, whether it’s money or toilet rolls. Confidence that they will have enough of what people actually need, when they actually need it, is what keeps such operations afloat.

Once a lot of people start acting other than according to usual patterns of consumer activity, then the vaults run out of cash, or the shelves run out of chicken soup, or whatever, and then news of that spreads and you have a full blown panic on your hands.

Because most of our toilet paper is manufactured in China and the virus has caused many workers to be off sick- so people are afraid that there will be shortages and are stocking up.

Not as far as i'm aware, but I doubt that the Government will compensste them as they will say that it's in the public interest.

I've seen an unverified report that Sky are to suggest banning anyone over the age of 70 from Premier League matches for the foreseeable future. Whether this is true of not, I think that Sky would prefer not to have to televise matches in empty stadia.

Maybe as a gesture to help the situation, Sky could make the affected matches available Free To Air, but there again pigs might fly :D
