Re: Avengers: Endgame
Bit odd though since Avatar, not Titanic, is the leader so he'll have to do this again if Endgame overtakes Avatar.
Also it shows how successful James Cameron is that until now the only film to beat Titanic was his own film Avatar, he had the two biggest grossing films of all time (well, ignoring inflation). When Titanic surpassed Star Wars: https://www.themarysue.com/wp-conten...ameron-ad2.jpg |
Re: Avengers: Endgame
yeah apparently there has been a healthy tradition between directors and studios congratulating each which started with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
Yeah I would have thought it would be if they pass Avatar though.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
It's going to be close but Endgame might just fall short of Star Wars domestically and Avatar internationally: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

Re: Avengers: Endgame
I am not sure if it is gong to make it. It looks like it is nearly there but can it scrape another $100m?
|
Re: Avengers: Endgame
It'll be close but each weekend they have big drop offs..It's made $15 million this weekend so...unlikely.
|
Re: Avengers: Endgame
Definitely worth a watch, they have thought of some really good points which I didn't think of when watching the film

Avengers to come back with a re-release: https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/19/1...om-home-avatar
Post credits scene added. Might get enough traction to take the top box office spot. |
Re: Avengers: Endgame
Talk about grasping at straws, i dont blame them though. When you are so close you'll do anything to make that last few $$$$. There are more than enough hardcore fans who will go and see it again to give it the $45m boost it needs. It is such a good film that I will go and see it again regardless of added scenes.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
I'll happily go and see the re-released avengers. Not sure how much that will help the figures though, as I have a Cineworld "Unlimited" card, so can go see films as often as I like. Not sure how much they pay for each viewer though.
|
Re: Avengers: Endgame
Yeah i have thought about that as well with my Limitless card at Odeon. Presumably the cinema still has to pay a fixed price per ticket/viewer to the movie distributor?

When you attend the cinema presumably you still get a paper ticket to gain entry. Is there a face value on it? |

For the first 3 days the tickets were on sale for TLJ that option wasn't there. Odeon ended up sending all Limitless customers an email apologising saying it was a technical glitch and they had fixed it but when I spoke to one of the cinema staff about it shortly afterwards and he said it was Disney who refused to pay for it. Out of all the films I have been to see as a Limitless customer (which is tonnes) it was the first time I had the problem and I haven't had it since. The system must work for them though, I think it is coming up to its 3rd anniversary next month and they continue to advertise it to death every time you go to the cinema so they can't be losing money on it. Because my cinema is one of the most expensive in the country it works out for me that as soon as I go twice a month I am saving money. Limitless membership is £18/month and on average tickets are £12/£13. I go to the cinema pretty much every week based on my film list for the year (and I would do even if I didn't have Limitless) so I save a fortune. Quote:

Re: Avengers: Endgame
Thanks ... as the ticket doesn’t have a face value I suspect in their contracts with distributors they have a clause specifying what they pay the distributor for every Limitless member they allow in.
I’ll bet it isn’t the same as a full-paying customer, and they will have justified that based on the larger number of films you probably go to see (higher effective sales volume on a lower margin). |

Endgame has become the highest grossing film ever

Re: Avengers: Endgame
It’s a nice bit of PR but in an economic system that has inflation built into it, the unadjusted figure can only have real meaning when compared with other films released around the same time. For comparison with historic releases only an inflation-adjusted figure actually means anything, and even that figure is of limited use as the way in which films are distributed and charged for is never going to stay quite the same over time.
Number of cinema seats filled over a defined period of time might be a more interesting way to measure how successful a film has been, as far as the audience is concerned (obviously economic success is the primary concern of the studio). Still, Endgame, the Avengers series and the wider MCU franchise deserves a big  for a genuinely superb, sustained, galactic-scale piece of storytelling. |

I’m not ashamed to admit that scene when the Falcon’s voice comes through Cap’s earpiece and says "on your left" and everyone appears through the gates behind Cap still brings a lump to my throat…

Re: Avengers: Endgame
yup, and it is those kind of moments which make Marvel films so special. All hope was lost and they could have easily gone about it a different way and had a missile or something else more actiony from the Wakandan's come through a portal over his shoulder and create an explosion which would have also created a sense of excitement and relief from the audience but they chose to make it a special nostalgic character lead moment like they always go. This is why the Marvel films are so special compared to DC and any other movies. It is always about the characters, relationships and emotions. It is hard to explain when you need to type it out and I think I have tried twice before for peeps who don't understand and disagree with me but that trailer goes a long way to explaining it for me.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
To be fair most good films are about characters, relationships and emotions. I think what made that moment so big was that they've been carefully crafting this interconnected world for the last decade and the Portals scene was the well-earned culmination of all that work.
It was well-done as well, you spent the whole film wondering when everyone would turn up but it was still hair-raising when they did. It would be so easy for that moment to be an anti-climax but they delivered on it perfectly. For some reason, it always reminds me of the Apollo 13 moment when ground control finally hears the voices come through. You know it's coming but it still feels amazing when it does. |
Re: Avengers: Endgame
That’s compelling human drama for you. It arrests you and keeps you in the moment so even when something totally expected happens (like all the Disappeared heroes showing up, or Apollo 13’s various close shaves) it still has the power to shock, amaze and delight.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
I like that they're making a case for going to the cinema and having these shared experiences too.
With more and more things going to streaming first as a result of the pandemic the future of cinema looks uncertain. Nolan has faced a lot of blowback for daring to suggest he thinks his films should go to the cinema first. So it's good to see Disney/Marvel throwing their weight behind the cinema. They're going to be vital in saving it. Four releases just this year: Black Widow - July 9th 2021 Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - September 3rd 2021 The Eternals - November 5th, 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home - December 17th, 2021 Hopefully these do very, very well. |

Yup. We haven't had one since Boseman died either so be interesting to see if there is a tribute to him with the Marvel Logo as there was with Stan Lee.
Really looking forward to cinemas being back though. I hope they show a lot of the ones we've missed like Nomadland |

Well they did one for Black Panther, so they may put a tribute in future movies.
