Did that worked for a while and dropped connect again, annoying watching Netflix on the VM box:( Think it is standard practice to replace you internet superhubs with the new version 3!

To be fair for me at least the Wifi on SH3 in very stable that is a bonus :)

SH2ac is fine.

Modem mode (or more specifically your standalone router) might be "interesting" if you want to use Netflix though. Keep us posted.

Don't use Netflix, but do use iPlayer. Try it and see I guess.

Yes - I head one of the first TiVo units sold in the UK. I increased recording capacity in this manner.

Wild Oscar 30-01-2018 17:30

Re: Free V6 box

There was also a 'method' of increasing capacity of a TIVO by simply taking out the old drive and putting in a bigger one as I recall , 500GB to 1TB for example.

The box would automatically format the drive and prepare it for use, whether that works with a VM box I wouldn't know ... probably not if VM have copyright issues!

Mr K 30-01-2018 17:57

Re: Free V6 box

Or you could just archive off anything you want from TiVo via the scart, to a hard drive/dvd recorder, seems a lot easier.

I think people need to get out more, unless of course housebound through illness etc, but I feel the amount of storage on the V6 is more than adequate.

Imagine if you have a large family who each watch different stuff, then it will fill up quickly.

AlabasterLyn 30-01-2018 20:23

Re: Free V6 box

We had our TIVO box replaced by a V6 box last week and have been quite impressed with it. Our old TIVO box has replaced our even older V+ box so we are able to watch all the stuff we had recorded on it.
Haven't worked out how to stream from the TIVO box to the V6 box, the engineer who came to install the new box said you can only stream from a V6 box to another V6 box, but I was under the impression you could stream from a TIVO box too.
Our superhub is upstairs and our TIVO and V6 box are both downstairs so they are connected wirelessly which might be part of the problem.
I've read about those powerlink things but don't want to waste money on something that won't work!

TIVo doesn’t have WiFi so that explains why it’s not working.
You’ll need to use powerlines.

No, it's not, Max. It only allows 120 hours of HD recordings, which is not very much at all.

If it was sufficient, I wouldn't be using two V6s and a DVD recorder!

You seriously need to get out more ;)

Even if you recorded 6 hours of TV a day (every day) thats almost three weeks worth.

Spot on, people rely on TV far too much nowadays, instead of getting out and about, especially when the weather improves.

It'll be more than that now after the MPEG4 change for the HD channels.

Not when you record programmes in HD and if one has a household of 3 to 4 people.

What about if several full series come along which they show over one weekend which the usually do as that soon gobbles up the memory IMO OB.

Hey, Max, I never watch TV during the day. My wife watches some stuff in the early evening; I never manage to sit down until 8.30 at the earliest. In the summertime, it's not until 10pm on a nice evening. However, I still seem to manage a couple of hours viewing on most nights.

Basically, there are a great many programmes to record and I don't understand why people struggle to find anything to watch. However, one thing I have been saying for a while now is that the quality and choice available on pay tv is diminishing. I was struck doing this list how much better the choice on the main terrestrials was on my DVD recorder. I only mentioned a few of these above, but the list is quite long!

It is precisely because I do get out that my programmes are piling up, but I hope to get to them all eventually!

Oh, have I mentioned my wishlists for Netflix, Amazon and Now TV yet...?

To connect the TiVo to your home network, you would have one powerline at the Superhub and one at the TiVo.
Your V6 should already be connected to your home network.

Ha ha! I do have a number of Sky One and Sky Living series, but my point is that there is not as much to record from those channels these days. When I compare these with the 'free' terrestrials, it does make one question the value for money.

The list of programmes I have on my DVD recorder (terrestrial channels only) are much better.

The TiVo has an ethernet port, so if possible use a cable as it is a much better way of connecting the TiVo to the home network.

I might agree with you on some of them, but I haven't seen them yet! And a number of these are for my dear wife.

That's what I mean when I say that the quality of pay TV has gone down.

The programmes I haven't revealed from my DVD recorder are altogether better.

They are stored on the hard drive like other recordings but show as free space. They automatically get over written by your own recordings.

Just double checking this, not that I'm doubting Spiderplant as he is the fountain of all VM knowledge.

Does Strike Back fall into that grey area with series links? I mean, it's one of those shows that has a separate subtitle from series to series so may not be picked up?

In this instance you are right to doubt. I'd never heard of Strike Back. If it's a "CSI" type of thing you may well be correct. It's entirely up to the person defining the guide data to decide whether or not they are the same series.

If in doubt, use a WishList

Have to say I was slightly misled on the V6, making next to no noise. When 'on' I can definitely hear it 'breathing' at night from across the room . The VHD was silent; suspected something with a hard drive/fan must make some noise. Putting it into standby does almost totally quieten it, does take a few mins to power down, bearable I guess. The lights have been black taped up nicely. Might resort to Spiderplants suggestion and stick it in a cupboard as the remote doesn't need direct line of sight. How is this offer made? Do Virgin email you? Currently on full tv package (sorry don't know the name of it, the big boona or something) with phone and Internet. Have two TiVo boxes currently, is changing over worthwhile? One box is in my daughters room, if the box is noisy as some have stated it may be best not to change if I get an offer? Thanks in advance for any advice :):)

Thanks, my relative is only on 50Mbps as part of the Player bundle. Would she still qualify for a free V6 (or be allowed one at all); didn't/don't they have a minimum 100Mbps policy before you could have a V6?

You now get a V6 with the Player bundle, so you need atleast 50mbit broadband to get a V6, it is on their site.

VM peddled the belief that only their VIVID 100 (100mbps) or better would be suitable in order to get a V6 box, and made it a requirement. Now that they want to move a lot of their customers onto the V6 boxes, which is mandatory for those who subscribe to Sky Sports channels in HD, then all of a sudden the VIVID 50 (50mbps) is suitable.

I never get these either via email or on 'my virgin media'. Think offers don't show online if you're on any sort of retention/loyalty discount for some reason. Usually find out about things on here ! . I just rang retentions and they sorted it. Basically if you haven't got a V6 box you're eligible. If you've already got one, you're not.

It's not any noisier than a TiVo, plus you can tape the one light it has up ; stick it in a cupboard if you wish, the remote will still work. Putting it into standby does certainly deaden the slight noise over night, I've also turned suggestions off so it doesn't do any random night recordings.

Re: Free V6 box

If you subscribe to Sky Sports channels in HD, you should get an email offering a free upgrade to a V6 box as these channels will be removed from the older (pre-TiVo) boxes after 31 January 2018. If your home setup precludes the installation of a V6, you'll be offered a TiVo.

The upgrade is free as this is a mandatory change. If you voluntarily request an upgrade to a V6, I believe that the charge is £20, and you'll have to subscribe to VM's broadband as well.

BenMcr 04-02-2018 22:17

Re: Free V6 box

That's a different offer to the general free V6 upgrade for customers without an existing V6 box and is now mostly complete.

Only those customers who haven't responded to multiple messages about the change will now lose Sky Sports HD on their remaining V HD or V+ HD boxes.

Are you really so hard up that £20 makes so much difference to your life's ? If you wanted this why didn't you get it before this? Me I didn't want it before and that hasn't changed.
I still recall lots of you saying how great TiVo was. My view was then was you are wrong.it hasn't changed.still not as good as boxes in USA😂

I've just received the offer, but having to run an ethernet cable from the SHUBac to it would be a pain. Especially as all 4 ports are in use, and that would mean adding a switch. It says it can work on a wifi connection, but that is flaky inside this house.

As I have over 80 series links on the TIVO, I tried the boxswap process (http://manage-virgintvgo.virginmedia.com/tivo/boxswap/) to check it worked, but it just sends me to a blank page?

It can be connected with WiFi - no need for Ethernet connection.

You do, but the webpage should still load anyway. I'd suggest loggging out of MyVM, clearing cookies, then trying again.

Wifi inside this house is very poor, I was told it was due to all the extra wall-ties that were fitted after a rebuild. Ditto an internal DECT phone.

I've done that twice, and I still see the 500 error in IE and Chrome, but a blank page with Firefox.

You can also use a Powerline set - either Ethernet only or Ethernet + WiFi to extend the network to where the V6 is, and then choose WiFi or Wired.

As a new user to the V6bug for me is no indication to when a program is being recorded!
At least with the Tivo there was a light coming on.

That's one of the plus points of the V6, no flashy lights!

The recording lights were useful on the Tivo, which only had three tuners, but with more tuners on the V6, I find this unnecessary.

If you do need to know if any recordings that you have set are recording at that minute, you just have to look at 'My Shows' and the current recordings are highlighted for you at the top of the list (as long as you are not displaying the list alphabetically).

BenMcr 08-02-2018 13:29

Or you can press Info on a live channel or recording and scroll down to the tuner list which will show what they're all up to.

There are no current plans to stop the older TiVo boxes from working.

It's the V+ HD, V HD and V boxes that will go before the older TiVo box will, and there isn't a date for that yet either.

Hi Ben, I wasn't aware that this was possible. I've just checked on my box upstairs and 3 of the 6 tuners seem to be on My5.... Any ideas why that would be?

spiderplant 09-02-2018 09:41

Re: Free V6 box

When the box boots up, all tuners go to the same channel, and will remain there until you use them for something else. So those three tuners haven't been needed for any other channels since the box was booted.

I have two Tivos and know which one I want to get upgraded. I can't use the online upgrade link it leads to a generic VM HTTP 500 error when clicking on the "let's go" button on https://store.virginmedia.com/existi.../v6eligibility. So will take the phone route to request the update.

What piece or pieces of information will be required to identify the correct Tivo? I want to have this ready when I call.

spiderplant 09-02-2018 14:54

Re: Free V6 box

Read the 16 character serial number from the box label. It'll start "C" if it's a Cisco box, or "S" if it's a Samsung.

If they do end up taking the wrong box off, it's not really a big problem. Just call up and they'll swap it over.

JayAy 09-02-2018 15:10

Re: Free V6 box

Thanks SP.

I was also asked for the NAGRA serial number too - which, of course, is conveniently placed on the bottom of the box! Order placed.

BenMcr 09-02-2018 15:16

Re: Free V6 box

I'd also note the Nagra Paring ID that's in:

Help & Settings > System Info > Diagnostics.

It's a bit of a pain that they do this.

A really useful feature would be if you could tell the box to park it's tuners on certain channels when they arent in use. Would mean you can then flick between those 5 channels (with the 6th following you to other channels) and they would always have a 90 minute rewind buffer. Add in a priority and the tuner on the lowest pirority channel could be used for scheduled recordings.

A slightly niche requirement! You could set a short manual recording on each of the channels at the same time each day.

Looking for some guidance here. My new V6 has just been delivered (2 days early!) along with a SHub3 which I do not want to install as I have a SHub2 upstairs which works perfectly well. Could someone advise if I still need to phone VM to activate or is that a requirement if you're installing the SHub3.
Thanks in advance.

Dont think it's that niche! If the default was just channels 1-5 then any VM customer would be able to flick back and forth to skip the adverts without worrying that they might miss the resumption of the show. Just seems a wasted opportunity having them all parked on the same channel or left aimlessly caching a channel that is only ever really used for 1 recording a week.

Not a bad idea on the manual recordings tho!

RichardCoulter 10-02-2018 17:35

Re: Free V6 box

Yes, it is a good idea to set up daily manual recordings, say for one minute. There is the option to set this to repeat to save people having to do this every day.

A VM forum user suggested another route to the upgrade, and it worked. Free Powerline kit too. And the final contract looks like I get to keep the TIVO as well (to replace the VboxHD in our bedroom?). All for no extra cost. :-)
