With a restart option already on each Movie Channel.

Based on that logic, why bother with +1 in SD either? Presumably Sky see value in providing the channel.

The SD channel was already there , what is the point of launching a +1 in HD when customers already have the option of +1 in SD , restart in HD via On Demand or record next showing in HD using their PVR.

Just been looking on the UPC site and it's the same modem as the Superhub 3. Not just appearance, model number is the same.

That's because you are on VM you need to be on the Sky platform.

You should still have the Premieres available in HD via On Demand surely ?

Not all films are available on demand in hd, Star Wars episode 7 and the Martian and the selection on demand in hd is very poor

Sony Channel replaces Moviemix on Tuesday next week. I see that the films on the Sony Channel include Predator, Preditor 2, Switchback and The Longest Yard, all of which were being shown on Moviemax just a few days before launch. So much for the hype, then!

Predator: 7.8 on IMDB
Predator 2 6.2 on IMDB
Switchback 6.4 on IMDB
The Longest Yard 6.4 on IMDB

Not terrible films by any stretch of the imagination though and it is an FTA channel.

I agree, but my point was that it's indistinguishable from Moviemax.

I'd be happier if VM got the Talking Pictures film channel. Available on freeview/sky/freesat, not VM for some reason. Some really good rarely seen British films on it. I can get it via freeview, however would be nicer to record on Tivo. Radio Times are always recommending films on it.

That's not correct. Sony Channel continues as normal. Sony Movie Channel merges with Movie Mix.

The refreshed Sony Movie Channel will launch with 14 channel premieres in its first month including Godzilla, Twilight, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Maid In Manhattan, The Mask of Zorro and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

They have moved from showing similar content at different times to, pretty much, simulcasting the same content as the date for the merger approaches. One point to note though, Sony Movies has been a "Highway To Heaven" free zone. Fear not though, after the merger, Highway To Heaven is scheduled to appear on the Sony Movie Channel... oh joy!

When i was with VM you needed the XL pack to get HD you still got bbchd, itvhd, 4hd and 5hd in all packs but for all other HD channels (except sky movies and sport) you needed to be on xl pack sky movies hd and skt sports hd were a extra £7.50p/m regardless of what pack you're on.
VM used to preach that their HD was free but in reality they hid it in the cost of XL.
Not sure if it is still the same now.

evening all.

when was the sky movies hd charge dropped? absolute joke that a "hd charge" even exists in 2017 for anything. It literally is the most blatant money grabbing charge ever with literally no defence. I remember when we moved from analogue to digital and we had the "digital charge" oh wait we didnt. in a world where most people have hd tv's now charging extra for sky sports hd is a joke. I refuse to as im not that bothered by SD. But a lot of people do which is why sky keep the gravy train going.

Happy new year you wonderful people btw.

This will be the year we get AMC, sky atlantic, no price rises, free amazon tv for everyone on xl package. I joke of course but lets dream big and then all be eternally disappointed in december again as we vote for best channel launch of the year and are greeted with a series of +1 channels or "made in liverpool" or something.

Lets live the dream

Amazon

VM get a freesat channel (kind off) woo hoo that'll be costing you £3 extra p/m in a price rise :p:

I'm just kidding btw about the prise rise. I hope i am anyway.

I think they should have put Sony Movie Channel in HD on Virgin Media and Sky, leaving Movie Mix in SD on Freeview.

Many other TV networks keep their main brands off Freeview by using another names, such as Discovery (Quest), Turner (TruTV), A+E (Blaze), FOX (YourTV) and Sky (Pick and Challenge).

It's only Movie Mix under a different name, which we already have, so nothing extra. Interestingly though, Movie Mix was never on Freesat and Sony Movie Channel won't be either.

Trutv and Blaze may not be around much longer. Sony movies is available for free on sattelite you just need a viewing card making it ftv not fta (i think i got that right way around lol), movie mix was also on freesat and sky under the name more>novies was quite a while back though.

I'm aware of TruTV not meeting the overly high expectations that Turner had, but where have you read about Blaze being at risk?

I know all of the background to Sony Movie Channel, More Than Movies and Movie Mix. I'm surprised that Sony are putting their brand onto Freeview, when the others are not.

Just a hunch about blaze not seen anything yet.
Sony probably see freeview as a chance to reach out to a wider audience maybe they'll launch a premier product in the future and use sony movies to advertise that product.

Movie Mix was doing that job already, as an outlet on Freeview and a platform to advertise their other services. Adding the Sony Movie Channel to Freeview just reduces the value of the core brand. The premier product could have been an upgraded HD version of the Sony Movie Channel.

The consolidation of their wider network is coming together nicely now, with both True Movies 2 and True Drama gone, making way for +1's. Their children's channels are in great shape. The music stations could do with some attention though. Movies4Men is their other free movie channel and it does pretty well.

-TV3 +1 has move to Virgin Ireland Channel 110.
-Be3 HD has launch on Virgin Ireland Channel 148.
-3e HD has launch on Virgin Ireland Channel 149.
-TV3 HD stays on Virgin Ireland Channel 150.

Content from Sony's childrens channels has been available on Virgin Media in On Demand / Catch Up for some time, but not in a dedicated app, just like ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 etc.

I'm quite willing to bet that Sony/CSC originally offered the full Kix channel (possibly a few others as well) to Virgin, but they refused because they were angered at Sony's asking price. :D :D

So the Sky Cinema channels have swapped position but weirdly left the SD Premiere+1 in position 402 but put all the HD versions around it.

I hope that is an error they will correct as that is just stupid.

On SKY premier+1 is on 302 with premierhd being on 301, then the other cinema hd from 303 upwards.
So most likely not a error on vm part.

Probably not an error, HD viewers on Sky have a similar situation. Basically the HD channels have priority but there isn't a SD Premiere+1 HD available to get priority.

As it was added to a transport stream used for pop-up SD channels such as the BBC Olympics channels it wasn't altogether unexpected.

They are FTA channels and make their money from advertising. As they don't have any premium content to sell, they should be paying for carriage not asking for a payment.

I think that it's better to have the option of a timeshift variant of the parent channel in SD than none at all when scrolling down in the HD section.

If possible, a duplicate entry in the SD section would be ideal.

As a PAYG I would expect HD on VM.
According to the website it's likely Tivo only "Virgin Media TiVo customers can buy direct via their TiVo box, on demand, from Monday 30th January."

As I understand it, VM switched to a new feed overnight carrying the old (nicer) Sony Movie Channel logo. Movie Mix continued on Freeview and morphed into the Sony Movie Channel the following morning. The PQ on VM certainly seems better than on Freeview.

Movie Mix was no doubt line fed into Langley, as there was no satellite feed available. SMC was on Astra 2G for Sky's customers already, so just a question of taking it from there, like with most of VM's SD feeds.

Line fed or maybe even using DTT as a temporary feed, judging by the poor PQ of the original feed. I was hoping for a better DOG for the Sony Movie Channel, I really disliked the white logo used for Movie Mix. Unfortunately, SMC has dropped their former logo and replaced it with a big white logo, similar to the style used for Movie Mix.

On a closer look at the Langley site, there are 4 yagi's pointing at Crystal Palace, so off-air DTT looks still possible.

The fee is for the Tivo software, rather than the specific ability to record. Subscribers to all platforms pay for the privilege one way or another, Virgin have just stripped out the charge due to offering the VHD box previously. Now they only offer Tivo/V6 I'm guessing the Tivo fee is now included in TV prices.
Given the fee is listed as a seperate item on bills, I wonder how keen Virgin will be to reduce V6 customers' prices by £5pm once the boxes migrate to Horizon?! ;)

My understanding is the two will converge with LGI continuing to licence elements of Tivo's software. They do not want to throw the baby out with the dishwater. By then, I doubt that the Horizon brand will be so prominent so it will just seem to all customers like a software upgrade rather than a totally new operating system. Time will tell.

There was a Daily Telegraph article on this last year.

Extract:

... there will be a major overhaul of the ageing plumbing that powers Virgin Media’s broadcasting, to allow it to shift to Liberty Global’s next generation distribution system, Horizon, which is already in use elsewhere in Europe.

That refers to the brand name. As the article makes clear further on, the Horizon platform is the future for VM rather than Tivo.
