Well done to Nicola!
Right now I feel so sorry for the Paralympians who I feel were properly lauded in 2012 and will now feel that the wonderful recognition and progress which had been made in London will have been eroded. |

Nice to see Brazil win the football gold.
Fairytale stuff with Neymar scoring the winning penalty. Richly deserved after watching the germans pass the ball amongst their defence for the last 10 minutes.... |

Re: Olympics - Brazil 2016
I suppose the next question is, given that we'll finish second in the medals table, do we quit whilst we're ahead?
Is the lottery funding for elite athletes justified or could/should the money be spent elsewhere? There's clearly a feel good factor in our medal haul but is it enough to justify the outlay? The 'basking in reflected glory' will diminish quickly when the Games close today and we'll come back down to earth with a bump. Savers continue to be fleeced; pensions plundered and home ownership a pipe dream for many young people. No gold medals for the unfunded riff-raff and those won at Rio cost several hundred mi££ions. I enjoyed the Games and we did well. Is it time to say, we know what we can achieve in sport, we're now changing our priorities? |

Some shady judging already, going to end in tears this.
It's done, He's never lost that first round. Second round was close but it's pretty clear the Frenchman won this fight before he'd even climbed into the ring. Gotta love the state of any boxing... |

On the contrary we all recognise exactly what the honours system is about and it isn't to reward sportsmen or actors, it's to reward cronies for keeping their mouths shut or doing dirty deeds, the odd sop to an athlete is merely to distract the public from that imo. ---------- Post added at 22:09 ---------- Previous post was at 22:06 ---------- Quote:
Its interesting that the lottery can provide support to the tune of 3/4 billion for elite athletes whilst at the same time 300 swimming pools have shut in the same time frame. ---------- Post added at 22:14 ---------- Previous post was at 22:09 ---------- Quote:

I'm afraid boxing has always been this way because of the money involved and nowadays there is big money sloshing around the Games. You should do what I do and concentrate on the women's rhythmic gymnasts :p: No, seriously there is some skill and art there although I prefer ribbon, ball and hoop to clubs. I'm not afraid to show my feminine side :D p.s. Just watched the Conlan fight again; I just can't see how the decision went against him. He took a few in the final round but Nikitin was cut up by then. |

I like it anyway. It's a nice alternative to people running in circles or kicking a ball into a net. |
