It's presumably a trial of that new wifi sharing thing they've announced.

It would be a quickstart if it is a new router, so just an automated phone call.

Pure Speculation but I would assume that may be the case because they will want to know that said hardware is stable with the faster speeds.

Who knows, we may even get IPv6!

Guess we will find out.

Given that it's a broadband hardware trial, I'm going to suggest that it's a trial of Broadband hardware.

I would recommend having a look at the other members of the Liberty Global family and seeing what they are providing for their higher end speeds.

That is going to be on new and existing kit. It will also have no impact on your own speeds.

Maybe but there is no need for it. Load/stress testing can be done in VM's labs with a full set of channels more effectively.

Just a thought. If it is a trial of new speeds and hardware, what effect does this have on bills? Like if you are on the top package and you test a router that delivers a higher speed does that impact on the bills?

No. The test device is usually set up on a completely separate test account, it has no impact on your normal account and, in fact, you can usually plug both devices in at the same time (shh).

I think the SH2 and SH2ac might have been different as internally they are nearly identical. See what happens with this next one.

So all the benefits claimants, who would need to have their own VM subscription to qualify to use your hotspot, will be leaving their broadband-supplied homes and queuing up to pillage your free public hotspot after signing in with their VM credentials? OK. :p:

Re: Broadband Hardware Trial 2015

I didn't say everyone i said in my area. But if you are going to pull me down least get your facts right. The row of flats opposite my road 1 down and 1 up a row of 10 of them are all occupied by benefit claimants who have been long term unemployed.

They are often fighting, police are often round windows getting put through. They get moved on but the next lot turn up. I mentioned a couple of empty ones when my brother wanted to move closer to me which is when i found out they were just for long term benefit claimants.

I could go on to be honest. Ive had to claim myself in the past so like i said in my post i said my area i didn't inc the whole of the uk

Who knows lol it's a vm area lag free usually. If its the case you need to be a vm customer to use the hotspot i suppose we'll have to wait and see what it is. Unfortunately when the trial goes live there will be an NDA i assume so won't be able to say.

VM have already confirmed that's the case I believe. It was in one of the many articles posted recently. I'm looking forward to receiving the trial hardware! Hopefully it's an improvement on the usual bargain basement stuff.

Unconfirmed but I'm going to guess "no". You have to opt-out of the wifi hotspot via MyVM, which implies it's a change at the config level of the hub rather than modem/router level. In other words, I don't think modem mode is going away, if anything it could just mean the hotspot is stronger.

Could this also be something to do with easing pressure on the 4G network it was in the paper the other day that emergency services will be moving over to the 4G network and given preference to the network over regular 4G.

wouldn't surprise me if there was some deal struck to kick start all companies to use wifi sharing to take some pressure from the 4G network

Yes and no. Virgin mobile is an MVNO, they don't have their own infrastructure instead they essentially rent space on EE's network. This means every time someone sends an SMS, makes a call or downloads data on Virgin mobile, it costs Virgin money. By encouraging Virgin Mobile users to use wifi, Virgin doesn't have to pay EE as much money. No doubt that's the real business decision behind this.

Thats not going to happen for a LONG time. EE are the only bidders... Airwave will be going for a while longer.

Emergency services already take priority on mobile networks.

Since "modem mode" does not turn off the modem or the routing functionality of the router then it's quite possible it would work as normal. Though that might displease people who use modem mode to avoid the the Superhub's wireless.

Emergency services don't currently use normal mobile networks - not for priority/critical communications anyway. They have their own. The whole proposal is they share public networks in future.

Really? Then why do they disable the other ports on the switch when you turn on modem mode?

Modem mode is an emulation of a modem. The routing is still there it's just running in bridge mode. This is actually the case for all cable modems.

A conscious decision was made to have modem mode disable the additional switch ports. There is no reason for it to have to be this way, and if VM allowed multiple public IP addresses via their configuration it wouldn't be.

Kushan 20-08-2015 14:43

Re: Broadband Hardware Trial 2015

It makes sense to disable the additional ports, it would cause too many issues otherwise as only one IPv4 is allocated in this mode. Consumers would struggle to correctly route the other 3 ports along with a DHCP service.

Really? I've been using the Superhub 3 for over a week now. It's great, rock solid and I get a solid 300 down, 30 up 24hours a day.

The VoIP functionality is a bit lost on me as I don't really make many phone calls, but the holographic emitter is a nice touch - very star wars - shame I don't know anyone else with a SH3 to test it with.

You're clearly doing it wrong if you hear no moaning.

Well a month on and still nothing new, I don't think VM has ever done anything on time so I guess it's to be expected.

Yeah seems odd, I'm guessing it's ground to a halt with the wifi sharing issue and there's no rollback firmware or something?

As a matter of fact, the firmware has started rolling back, at least for the SH2. Mine is now back on the previous firmware.

While checking a few T3 and T4 errors I've had this week, I noticed in my fw/router logs that the WAN link had been up and down a few times in succession an hour ago. Logged into the SH2 (non-AC) log screen and lo, a new config file was downloaded. The hub now shows v1.01.29 but I can't remember what it was before lol. Is this the rollback from borked firmware discussed above?

Mine is just a regular SH2, not the ac version.

Yes, I believe so. The dodgy firmware was version 2.something from what I recall.

It was V2.01.03 and still is for me but I expect it to be rolled back by the end of the week.

Re: Broadband Hardware Trial 2015

In fairness, the fact that they're delaying it probably isn't a bad thing. In the past, they've pushed stuff out way before it was ready or suitable and we ended up with things like the Superhub as a result. If delaying by a month or two means we end up with a solid device at the end of it, I for one am happy.

Some information on the new VM/Ziggo/Telenet/UPC Modem. Technical specs to follow in the next few weeks; roll-out by VM by end of this year.
