Of course there are scroungers out there who live off the system but there are also a considerable amount of people in which the system has failed as well including many working people and families sadly.

Given that anybody can edit a Wiki entry how are we to know this wasn't a put-up job by the Lefty Gruniad in order to smear the Torys?

So far the owner of the account that made the changes has not been traced.

Labour smearing people???

They'd never do that would they???

I mean it's not like they employed a team to do just that is it...

If it turns out to be true, however, it will have been an extremely stupid thing to do.

Even if it is traced back to Labour Party it'll be some poor intern on a zero hours contract that was told to do it by a party apparatchik and will have to take the rap and "admit" they did it off their own back.

This election is so dirty I wouldn't put anything past anybody just to get their mucky paws on the levers of power.

Always ask: qui bono?

Wikipedia monitors these things. You think the mods and admins here can be anal? There are few more pompous and power crazed than a Wikipedian with admin access. They are zealous at this stuff. This was always going to be uncovered. It would have been plain stupid for the Tories to even try.

It has, by apparent coincidence, been uncovered right in the middle of the election campaign. At the very least, that puts Labour in the frame for nudging Wikipedia in the direction of these edits at this time.

However, unless someone in Conservative Central Office has been privateering, or otherwise operating a spectacularly stupid, ill-advised and naive online campaign, you have to admit that Labour benefits from making these edits and then flagging them up, while the Tories don't benefit from making edits that would inevitably have been discovered in due course.

It's not unimaginable that the Conservatives do not understand how IP address and Wikipedia works. I wouldn't assume they would have known the discovery of any editing would be discovered.

Well they certainly don't understand how the internet works re: their policy of banning or regulating things on the net.

You'd have thought that after three years of injunctions against TPB that have failed to stop that site and the continued failure of ISP's to ban torrents and other file sharing at the behest of the record\movie industries it was obvious.

Considering the fact that Grant Shapps started up a Web Creation business in the 90s, and a Web Publishing business in the 2000s, I would imagine he is pretty au fait with the concept of IP addresses...;)

The article is amount the ERM, another example of why we need to keep our distance from all things EU.

I don't think you can really fault the management of the economy by the Conservatives. Their track record is second to none. Look at our economy now! From the catastrophe left to us by Labour we are now one of the fastest growing economies. Speaks for itself, really.

can't fault them, I'll repeat it for you record number of businesses folding, record number of house repossession and unemployment doubling. To simply dismiss it as being due to the ERM is like labour saying the problems they left were down to the global economic crisis. our economy went down the toilet due to the then pm's vanity project and the tories paid the price, the things people say about labour now were said about the Conservatives for years after and it's why they were unelectable for so long.

Loving the Tory campaign posters dotted here and there by the posh houses in our area, give the lady MP her due she does seem to do a good job for the local community, its a shame she is in the wrong party.

The posters do remind me of National Socialist Germany's attempt into gaining popularity.

Going in to ERM was a catastrophic mistake made by Tories who no longer have any meaningful influence on the party. Furthermore it was *not* a mistake borne out of any fundamental Tory or broader right-wing ideology.

Holding ERM up as somehow relevant to today (even in the sense of trying to diss John Major) is pointless. Unlike, say, holding up the financial crash, the regulatory errors and governmental unpreparedness that exacerbated it. The loons responsible for that are very much still in the game, and are asking us to put them back in charge in a couple of weeks time.

Dear oh dear talk about move the goalposts we go from their economic management being second to none to it being no longer relevant as everyone involved is old now. Listening to William Hague on the Today programme yesterday morning made me think of Osem as Bill wouldn't have a bad word said about anything Conservative. I even began to wonder if Bill and Osem are in fact one and the same - after all you never see them together on TV or hear them on the same radio show..... ;)

I do not like it when vandalism hit the Tories posters, in Great Yarmouth. But not being nasty, what does the Conservative people in that area expect.

I go to Yarmouth each year on Hols, and l see quite a lot of people who are down on there luck. I watched a recent documentary on GY. And it sadden me of what the area has turned out to be. There were queues of people looking for seasonal work, as that's all that going

So what do the Tories want, you cannot support the rich and treat the poor as they don't exist.

GY, as some stall holder told me once, that once the holiday season goes, the town is like ghost town, and no work

I am a great believer in the fact that there are plenty of Industrial Estates there, but you have to pay decent wages to get work.

I am just glad l didn't move there three years ago, as l would still be unemployed

Actually the polls are budging - just not fast enough.

Since January, the rolling polling average has shown an upward trend for the Tories, who are now, on average, level with, or fractionally ahead of, Labour, whereas 3 months ago they were comfortably behind.

Labour has been falling off ever so slightly. The same average shows UKIP falling, Green falling and the Lib Dems gaining. In other words, the polling average shows the electorate creeping back towards where it was in 2010, although so far the outcome doesn't look identical by any means.

What a strange perspective you hold of the 1990s! Anyway, this was some 25 years ago and I really can't summon up the mental strength today to debate history.

The plain fact is that the Coalition Government have sorted out the worst financial crisis ever caused by a succession of Labour Governments who decided to raid all the pension pots, sell the gold and spend all the money they inherited on the most amazing spending spree which saw benefits claimants getting as much money as senior managers!

I think the difference between Labour and Conservatives is extremely stark and you will have to make your mind up whether you want to go back to square one (2010) or whether you want the improvements we are now witnessing to be built upon.

We can be doing well again in five years, or we can be impoverished. The choice, I guess, is ours.

:tu:

The usual suspects can carry on whining about cuts and absolving Labour of any blame for what happened over 13 years, as they perennially do ,but can you imagine what sort of mess we'd be in now had Brown won the last election? :eeek:

It beggars belief that any sensible person would risk giving Balls and Miliband control of UK PLC after their role in the biggest bust for decades but it just goes to show how powerful things like spin, benefits culture and the prospect of a mushrooming public sector and unions running the show is for some deluded and naïve folk. Maybe they run their households in a similar chaotic manner and that's why they can't see just how inept the party they vote for time and time again is. Maybe they just don't want to admit their own failings, preferring instead to blame the 'nasty' party for everything under the sun and supporting those whose only answer is spend, spend, spend...

Despite this I just bring myself to vote, there are no candidates who are worthy of leading the people of this nation. No parties whose views I can fully align myself with.

I think for many of us voting has been reduced to choosing the least worst option. There's no one party for me either so I am reduced to damage limitation and that's what will determine my vote.

I think you're spot on with that analysis Unfortunately they all seem to damage multiple areas.

We need a major overhaul of the political system in this country.

One of the things I hate most however, I was sat watching the local news the other night and there was an article interviewing people asking about how they would vote. One woman said 'I don't know who to vote for, no one has told me anything'

Better to have your say and pick the least worst, rather than abstaining, surely?

At the very least, attend your polling station and spoil your ballot. Spoils are counted and the total read out. It's the nearest you can get to officially registering your distaste for the choice presented you.

So true. I'm sick and tired of people claiming ignorance when they all have mobile phones with the means (if they could only divert them from social media for more than a nanosecond) to educate themselves about anything. These people don't lack the means, what they lack is the will to learn, the desire to find out. For the vast majority of us, there's really no reason to be ignorant today - there are no excuses.

The Conservatives are creating more jobs than ever before and they are bringing about a situation whereby nobody earning the minimum wage will pay tax.

They do need to encourage the rich to come and to stay in this country, because they are the wealth creators, without whom we would not be able to pay the generous benefits this country is renowned for.

Labour have no idea. They will frighten away those with money, they will demotivate those who work hard and tax us all half to death. They really are a bankrupt party both in their lack of ideas and in terms of the legislation they pass when they govern.

Personally, I care very much about the plight of the poor, but the Tories are the best party to deal with that. Contrary to the beliefs of the Socialists.

Yup but ask them who's PM and they haven't got a bloody clue what PM stands for let alone who's doing the job.

These same people all too often say stuff like "I can't afford to feed my kids...." blah, blah, blah... when they've made zero effort t find out how easy it is to produce a quick, cheap, simple and nutritious meal. Funny how they seem to have money for takeaways, nail jobs, hairdos, fags, booze, nights out etc. whilst their kids are supposedly starving however...

Thinking for themselves is just too much effort for these people, far easier to wait for someone to chuck more money and support at them to further reduce their need to think and act responsibly.

Despite this I just bring myself to vote, there are no candidates who are worthy of leading the people of this nation. No parties whose views I can fully align myself with.

Well the party who will reward hard work, look after the NHS and ensure our money is well spent is the Conservative party.

They may not be in their best reincarnation at the present time, but they are the best we've got. If you don't vote for them, you'll let the others in. Don't say you weren't warned!

Better to have your say and pick the least worst, rather than abstaining, surely?

At the very least, attend your polling station and spoil your ballot. Spoils are counted and the total read out. It's the nearest you can get to officially registering your distaste for the choice presented you.

It won't prevent your worst nightmare getting in if you spoil your ballot paper though, will it Chris?

BREAKING NEWS

It's being reported that Nigel Farage has demanded an inquiry by the Electoral Commission into why Cable Forum's mini poll icon shows the 'blue' Tories well ahead despite the fact that the forum's own vote shows them sharing the lead with UKIP on 15 votes each.

No not a strange perspective it's called facts and it might be twenty five years ago but it's the last time the tories formed a government, that should tell you something about what a grand job they made of it and for the record I've never voted labour, this time won't be any different.

On the subject of Labour's unswerving support for the poor, another thread reminded me of this from the last Labour 'Govt'.

Quote:

More than one million owners of older cars will see their road tax double over the next two years under the Government's controversial "green" car tax reforms.

Used car prices plummet in buyers' market
In full: New tax bands | Fair deal for drivers
Your View: Has Labour forgotten the poor?

Official figures, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, disclose that 1.1 million motorists who bought their cars between 2001 and 2006 will pay more than £400 annually in duty - compared to £210 or less now.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/...ar-owners.html

Yep, that would have helped the poor such a lot eh - just like abolishing the 10p tax band...

No it won't. For those that absolutely cannot, with a clear conscience, support anyone, it is, however, a better option than simply sitting at home. The candidates hear the total of spoiled ballots and in a marginal seat they will know that the people who are politically engaged enough to turn up and write a poem, or draw a picture, had a vote up for grabs but withheld it. (it is often possible for the candidates representatives at the count to see what is on the papers in the spoiled pile)

15 million people who never vote will never change anything. 15 million people turning up and deliberately failing to support any candidate, show that they are engaged, listening, and waiting for something better. That might, just, in the long run, make a difference.

Not that it'll happen. They'd rather stay home, watch Jeremy Kyle and complain nobody told them anything, while sharing the latest alcohol-related meme on their Facebook wall.

And they have been near enough level pegging for quite a period now given a point lead here and there in the poll of polls for both of them and personally unless something monumental happens in these last 14 days or there is a almighty cock up l cannot see it changing much unless the electorate is deceiving the pollsters quite a bit.

I think there is enough noise from minor and regional parties that national polling is fraught with difficulties. Vote-splitting in many seats could lead to perverse outcomes.

If I had to put money on it, I'd say we're in 1992 territory - the polling organisations don't have the methodology necessary to read the current picture, and the outcome will probably be better for the Tories than everyone is predicting.

This scenario isn't impossible. If we aren't going to see majority government for a while we should at least have a voting system that is reflective of the views of the electorate.

We've dragged up the race thing. blacks vs whites vs browns again.

Dave says that the Conservatives will have the first Black/Asian PM.
He's pledged to boost minority ethnic jobs, university places and police recruits by 2020.

why don't you step aside then Dave. pick a black or asian person and give yourself a pat on the back for reminding us that we're all different. we're not equal.

don't you just hate it when all else fails pick on a non white person to stand out in the crowd.

I hate having to be reminded that we're not all equal as human beings. and that our colour determines our status and standing in society.

Thanks Dave. you prat.

It's a bit like him saying "we're the cool gang cuz we got a black dude on our team"
and then he's constantly patronising the poor guy everyday he shows his face at work.

Doesn't everyone think this election is a bit lack lustre?

Ed has done alright in his media moments, better than expected but not great.

Dave seems to have taken a back seat, no real passionate debates or knockout speeches.

Clegg is just an annoying irrelevance and the Green leader, Natalie Bennett, just isn't up to the job.

A big disappointment is Farage: in the debates I have watched where I expected him to dominate, he failed to stand out.

but the biggest worry is the SNP Leader who is wooing the Labour vote with her more-left-than-labour policies but hides a not-so-secret agenda to engineer Scottish independence.

So in summary, as Private Frasier said "We're doomed .."

Difference being that Blair knew the evidence was made up.......

Indeed but would David Cameron have done any different if he was PM at the time?.

The plan to change the regime not the reconstruction plan presumably?

labours fully costed plans for the NHS, from the mansion tax.

It's crystal clear.

That's an assumption, not a fact....;)

I wonder why Ed hasn't criticised the issue some time in the last four years?

Because he's an insincere, opportunist, hypocrite maybe?

But he knows the usual rose tinted suspects are prone to selective memory syndrome when it comes to what Labour got up to when they were in power. Luckily, some of us are here to keep reminding them...

Actually it's a question, that I hoped someone would have an answer to....

With the possible exception of UKIP none of the major parties come even close to having costed plans.

Tories definitely fell on their backside finding £8 billion down the back of the sofa for the NHS for example.

It's actually been an abysmal campaign by Tories and Labour, the Lib Dems largely anonymous, UKIP a shambles. The SNP's campaign has been 'okay' but compared to the competition has looked excellent.

This is actually the most dire election I can remember in terms of campaign, issues, policies.
