Re: New DSLReports speedtester

Has the speed tester changed in some way? Until this week I consistently got >300Mb on this test. Suddenly all I get is around 250Mb any time of day. Bufferbloat is as normal for me A to B.

Hub 2 Vivid 200. Surprisingly high download (although I have never seen it go under 200).

Bufferbloat C - but I haven't noticed any performance issues

My blufferbloat appears very poor..

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2016/10/6.png

My overall rating is C and I think the blufferbloat is dragging everything else down. Could this be the reason behind why some of my web page browsing freezes half way through and I sometimes need to refresh a couple of times for everything to download?

Is it a call to Virgin or are there some tweaks I can do to improve it myself?

No its 98se mate :)

I started on 95 but I didnt like it too much...... Does anyone know what the difference is between Win98 and Win98se?? (Like what would I notice different on 98?)

Sephiroth 23-01-2017 16:21

Re: New DSLReports speedtester

Google with the term below - all explained. The se edition is the one to have if you must stay with 98.

"difference between windows 98 and windows 98se"

Re: New DSLReports speedtester

IIRC SE bought in proper USB support.

If you must stay traditional I'd recommend you go to XP SP2 or SP3. It's similar enough to 98se, and can be made to look the same visually, that you'd feel at home but does handle memory and hangs far better and most vendors still have software that is compatible.

A registry tweak will give security updates until mid 2019. (Courtesy of embedded XP systems)

My laptop runs W7 pro but with classic shell and is still very XP like.

I get the same ping on my 300meg line. I'm afraid 9ms is the best we have as far as I'm aware.

If ping is all you care about, why are you paying for 200/20 ?

I’m lucky to be able to pay for it, ping is all I care about due to some online gaming, also means I might download a game at 50GB and with the Xbox One X coming out soon, games could be up to 100GB. So the download speed helps out.

Re: New DSLReports speedtester

Still a big fan of this over speedtest.net. For you guys on cable VM's hosting of speedtest.net servers in hub sites alongside the algorithms Ookla use make this more representative of actual experience - traffic has to leave the VM network much as your day-to-day traffic does, it doesn't stop at a server that's potentially a matter of metres from your CMTS.

The value of speedtest.net addressed to a VM server is for diagnosing whether delay is present inside the VM estate.

I just tried your speed tester again Paul and got about 3 megs down (I had to pick OTHER as I didnt see my ISP listed (Its mostly UK companies as you know))

I also tried it from: http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/modules...itialmeter.php

And got 3996.10 so about the same right? (Looks like I got almost 4 on that one)
