So what channel can we expect from virgin this year we had better start with sky sports sky news HD. Any got rumors/insider info that they can post. They're not many left to have now, but would like some HD channel netgo history ect, amazon prime an anime channel would be nice like Crunchyroll.

We have Sky here too - and Universal HD gets watches a lot.

Never watch Sky Atlantic - tried a few series but also loose interest during episode 1.

It's not unless you are in Wales! Available on iPlayer but you have to change your location - had to do that to watch Wrexham v Maidstone in round 1

It's odd how SA lovers can't understand how others think it and some of its programs are massively over-rated. I have repeatedly said I found G.O.T boring, especially in the first episode. I have forced myself through the first season of it though, it's tedious in my eyes. Countless other shows simply don't interest me on it either.

Everyone has different taste in shows loads of people go crazy for strictly come dancing, i personally think it's a pile of steaming manure.
If everyone liked the same thing there'd be no variety.
I don't like boardwalk empire yet loads love it and look at me like i'm a lunatic when i mention it's not my cup of tea lol.

Indeed they do. I hate strictly too. The reaction you receive about Boardwalk Empire is what I am talking about. People think it is on SA and as such must be great. No one cares at work or down the pub if I say strictly is rubbish, or if ITV is a guff channel, but talk badly about SA or its shows and you are treated like a leper. That is what I don't understand. It's all such a load of hyperbole about a few half decent shows and masses of repeats.

For the record, that Broadcast article dates back to 27 June 2013, not October. (Google "Virgin back in Sky Atlantic talks" Subscription link http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/virgin...057814.article)

I was referring to the guardian article you kindly pointed in the previous thread which I mistakenly said October but actually August which I believe is the last article in public domain

Gotcha. And I agree with your main point - be it Summer 2013 or Winter 2013, it's a long time ago so nothing came of those discussions.

What you on about? All I did was ask a perfectly reasonable question to what the other poster had written, to say that he/she gave up after the first episode, was, imo a bit silly, as no show was mentioned on which he/she gave up on!

Indeed it is. In England we get BBC2 England on 864 (same as 102), this is presumably there for those who get a national variant on 102.

Wouldn't it be fair to offer the BBC2 variants to the whole of the UK? I wanted to use BBC2 Scotland last night :(

They didn't even drop the game on the Red Button. I had to switch to my FreeSat connection to watch the game.
FreeSat has all BBC2 variants (Wales/Eng/Scot/NI) plus all the BBC1 local regions too. Comes in useful every now and then.

Well, my hope was that Sky Atlantic, if it was coming, would be one of the remaining Sky channels we would get by this spring at the latest as the result of the 2013 talks.

The fact that we now have Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD has got me wondering if that is all we are getting out of the deal resulting from those talks.

So really, I think those talks have not progressed in the way I expected, and we are going to have to wait longer for this channel, although I do think it will come eventually.

I've now had given to me box sets of Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, and I bought the last series of Mad Men so the main programmes I was annoyed at missing I now have in my possession.

However, I hope that VM negotiates something with Sky soon because there is now talk of them hooking up with HBO to make some more good dramas. It would be a shame to miss out on this joint venture. I wonder if Sky are prepared to put in additional investment without making better efforts on getting a decent return for this?

Aye i agree with all this old boy. I had hoped the reason for sky sports news hd and sky news hd being held back so long was due to SA coming along with them in 2015. Ah well never mind.

As for the investment from VM i sadly doubt it. At the moment VM are cutting long term deals for channels, not overly spending for new channels (or not spending at all), increasing prices and not spending a lot on anything else. Which suggests to me theyre trying to push the profits up asap possibly in order to sell by making it look more attractive? Little spending, constant pay increases would all suggest this.

Absolutely. Now that VM have extra capacity, I really don't know why these variations aren't available. They are available to VM at no charge by the BBC.

Having them would have resolved a recording clash the other day for me.

Erm, I thought they were investing quite heavily (about a billion a year in the UK) in their networks?

Great that Sky news and Sky sports news hd have finally launched on virgin. All we want now is Universal hd and Sky Atlantic (hd or sd). Personally I think Sky and Virgin will do a deal sometime this year. No reason for my belief in this other than maybe Sky realising Atlantic no longer(if ever)attracts customers away from virgin.

sky are losing money through advertisement by not giving the channel to VM. Theyve now brought out Now Tv so anyone that bothered about sky atlantic can get it and have virgin media too.

It must simply be someone high up in sky refusing to accept the same bid virgin media gave a few years ago.

"But sir it makes sense now. the extra advertisement will make us a lot more money"
"NO! NO!"
"But sir the value of the channel has decreased now with Now tv available for VM. Yes VM have kept to their same bid but we should just now accept it and move on"
"NO! NO!"
"sir you're being stubborn for no reason here we have to be realistic and agree to the terms the channel isnt worth as much anymore? We can all win if we accept their bid"
"NO! NO!"
"at least explain why you dont want to give virgin media sky atlantic?"
"NO! NO!" (executive puts head on table and punches table aggressively)

its this kind of illogical leadership from sky which could see them lose the majority of EPL football for the first time in almost 25 years. They need to review upper management and the decisions theyre making currently.

Sky would not be the first company to offer a loss leader though Vince. Therein lies the problem. It may not be worth as much since Now TV were given rights for it but if they are still making enough profit to justify keeping it from all the other providers, why not keep it away from the rest?

No, but you're a representative sample of one. If Sky thought there was any advantage in wholesaling it they'd have done so. It's only a year since they reported that it drove a quarter of new subscriptions. I'd be amazed if it didn't have a significant effect on churn.

It's not a case of attracting viewers away from VM to Sky because of Atlantic; it's about when new pay TV customers are choosing between Sky and VM; Atlantic is a high profile USP and as Andy says, attracts a lot of customers for Sky. It makes little sense to let VM have it, as both services are struggling to get pay TV customers .

The following channels will be added to Worldbox "early 2015" (i'm assuming that this means sometime between Jan and March):

Eurochannel- Mixed language (including some English programming). You can garner a taste of what's to come by having a playaround here http://www.eurochannel.com

BFM TV- A Gallic news channel based in France.

Ukraine Today- I assumed that this would broadcast in Ukranian, but Wiki says it broadcasts in English! This channel concerns itself with current affairs.

CTC- Russian independent channel. Putin is causing problems for this channel, resulting in it's share price dropping, so I guess that they are trying to broaden their appeal outside Russia. They have told VM that they hope to carry English subtitles on their service from the start (maybe this is the reason for the delayed launch and vague start date- they want to make sure that they're ready??)

Sadly I very much doubt it'll be a priority for VM to make an app. Since they wouldn't be able to make any money out of it? With Netflix they can brag about free months as part of the service.

Wwe won't make it for a uk TiVo and vm won't see any profit from making the app, so me thinks not!

A gaelic news channel based in france?? tremendous! a ukrainian channel broadcasting in english? Even more tremendous! why on earth they're broadcasting in english i dont know! but i'll end up watching these randomly whenever i'm suffering from insomnia.

Is worldbox a completely new service or is it an old service which has just recently come to VM?

That depends which STB model they had. Some Smallworld customers only got the YouView channels. Either way, they've gained far more than they lost.

It's Gallic, not Gaelic!

It's a completely new service and will be expanded; it's been brought about through a partnership with VM and Globecast. Globecast have been involved in similar IPTV projects in the past

If there is a Tivo app in the US then I guess there is a chance it may come across to VM in the UK. So far there isn't.

Nah SSNHQHD and SNHD arent really that big of a deal...News is news, it doesnt need to be in HD, heck you dont even have to watch it, you can just listen :-)

Some new HD entertainment channels would be good news, but I like the sound of a new Tivo coming, specially if it has 6 tuners and 2TB hard-drive ;)

I really can't understand what content owners have to gain by these restrictions. They have already been paid for the material and preventing MRS only causes inconvenience to customers who have to watch it in a different room!

Because content owners are paranoid about piracy and are too stupid to realise that giving people who are prepared to pay more flexible viewing options is better than people who pirate their content. The irony is that the people who pirate, can watch it on any device they choose; people who pay can't.

Some of these people deserve the piracy they get IMHO. Did they not learn from the record industry?

Because agreeing different rights for different viewing methods gets them more money.

Simple business and money making is all.

Perhaps the content owners want more to allow MRS to be enabled and VM won't pay it?

I hope we get Universal Channel in HD this year on Virgin Media because they have got some great tv shows such as Bates Motel, Sleepy Hollow, Rookie Blue and How to Get Away With Murder with the brilliant Actress Viola Davis etc.

I am surprised VM haven't secured the HD version of Universal. I agree it is a good channel, but the picture quality on the SD channel is dreadful most of the time.
