Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Just watching the testing highlights. Red Bull are running a camouflaged livery to disguise some of their aero work, so they obviously think they have something very decent to hide, although Adrian Newey was beating his usual drum about being over-regulated. I think some of the cars are stunning. The new Lotus looks amazing in the traditional livery, but see it against the McLaren and it's incredible how tightly packed the Honda power unit is in the McLaren - so narrow. Ron Dennis has said that at some point the livery will change as well.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Ron has now said the livery will change when they get a new sponsor, not before.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
He originally said "Our 2015 livery will change, but I'm not going to say when..."
If it's going to be when they finally sign a title sponsor then I guess that'll be never! ---------- Post added at 21:17 ---------- Previous post was at 21:09 ---------- Red Bull have turned up with only one front wing, so Daniil Kvyat, having broken it, has run today without any front wing! Something very odd going on at Red Bull I reckon. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
One wing does seem strange - maybe they think they don't need them, it didn't se to do Nico much harm when he broke his last year.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Is there any actual live streaming of the testing? Highlights on F1 channel are rubbish, hardly get to see any of the cars. Just a lot of talking to drivers.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Not that I know of mate.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Oh well. Thanks anyway.
German GP this year looks unlikely according to Ecclestone. Crowds dwindled last year for the race, but he says they are still trying to rescue the race and host it at Hockenheim again this year. Link to REUTERS story. Drivers for today's testing: Rosberg for Mercedes, Ricciardo for Red Bull, Massa for Williams, Raikkonen for Ferrari, Alonso for McLaren, Carlos Sainz Jr. for Toro Rosso, Maldonado for Lotus and Nasr for Sauber. |

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
I don't think it'll stop them starting the season, but it's bound to be a story that will rumble on. Besides which, it's now looking more and more likely that Manor (formerly Marussia) are going to make it, using last year's car.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Marussia have been blocked from using their 2014 car by other teams, so it is very unlikely they will make the grid.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Don't see why, surely using their 2014 car would give the other teams an advantage?
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Despite the fact they've agreed Caterham can? Disgusting. Presumably so they can get a slice of the prize money Bianchi won them.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
I cannot believe that Force India are that desperate for the £4 million that they woudl get if Manor don't race at all. I always support the underdog anyway, so Manor will be added to that list.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
My understanding is that Force India got to vote first. Because the vote had to be unanimous, once Force India had voted no there was no longer any point in the other teams voting, although the likelihood is that others would have voted the same way. I think it's a bit misleading to suggest Force India vetoed the plan, they were just the first to say no meaning the others didn't have to, and they were probably going to.
I've read reports this morning that Manor are going to try and put a 2015 car together in time for China. |

New drivers to make debut in Barcelona. Quote:

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Who's driving for each team in the second test (going from Thurs to Sun L-R):
Mercedes: Hamilton, Rosberg, Hamilton, Rosberg Red Bull: Ricciardo, Ricciardo, Kvyat, Kvyat Williams: Wolff, Massa, Bottas, Massa or Bottas Ferrari: Raikkonen, Raikkonen, Vettel, Vettel McLaren: Button, Alonso, Button, Alonso Force India: Wehrlein, Perez, Wehrlein, Hulkenberg Toro Rosso: Verstappen, Sainz Jr., Verstappen, Sainz Jr. Lotus: Maldonado, Palmer, Maldonado, Grosjean Sauber: Nasr, Ericsson, Ericsson, Nasr Manor & Caterham both not participating this test. Will post the times and laps later. ---------- Post added at 11:12 ---------- Previous post was at 09:47 ---------- Hamilton pulls out of day's testing due to illness, meaning Mercedes called up their reserve driver Wehrlein, who was driving for Force India today. He'd done 20 laps, quickest time being 1:28.329, already for Force India before Mercedes called him back. Force India now looking for someone to drive for the rest of today in their car. Force India announce on Twitter that Perez will drive for them this afternoon. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Rosberg also a doubt for testing, he has an inflamed nerve in the neck, so a doubt for taking part at all. So unless this reserve does all 4 days, Mercedes might not do all 4 days.
---------- Post added at 15:09 ---------- Previous post was at 15:09 ---------- McLaren out of Day 1 after power unit failed on Button's car. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Day 1 times and laps:
1. Maldonado, Lotus. 1:25.11, 69 laps 2. Raikkonen, Ferrari. 1:25.167, 74 3. Ricciardo, Red Bull. 1:25.547, 59 4. Perez, Force India. 1:26.636, 34 5. Nasr, Sauber. 1:27.307, 79 6. Verstappen, Toro Rosso. 1:27.900, 94 7. Button, McLaren. 1:28.128, 21 8. Wehrlein, Force India. 1:28.329, 32 9. Wehrlein, Mercedes. 1:28.489, 48 10. Wolff, Williams. 1:28.906, 86 11. Hamilton, Mercedes. 1:30.429, 11 Mixed bag really. McLaren look like they were doing much better this time around before the power unit failed. Hopefully they can continue improving. And I think the reason for the other teams voting against Force India using their 2014 car is because they were actually doing quite well in testing today. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
It was Force India voting against Manor using their 2014 car in 2015, not the other teams stopping Force India wanting to use a 2014 car.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Oops, so it was. Sorry, blame me being drowsy earlier after taking some codeine linctus for my cough.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
The Wehrlein thing was amusing, driving for Force India in the morning then getting pulled by Merc and placed in the best car on the grid, whilst Perez had to be called to the track to replace him. Just goes to show how, because of the money situation in f1, the smaller teams have to dance to the bigger teams tune, and not even the bona fide race drivers are immune.
On the subject of Manor, apparently looking increasingly likely that they'll be back at some stage http://uk.mobile.reuters.com/article...50219?irpc=932 |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
YET again McLaren do the least amount of laps today. Even a car running last year's technology managed to do more.
1. Ricciardo, Red Bull. 1:24.574, 143 laps 2. Raikkonen, Ferrari. 1:24.584, 90 3. Massa, Williams. 1:24.672, 88 4. Perez, Force India. 1:24.702, 121 5. Hamilton, Mercedes. 1:24.923, 89 6. Rosberg, Mercedes. 1:25.556, 66 7. Alonso, McLaren. 1:25.961. 59 8. Palmer, Lotus. 1:26.280, 77 9. Ericsson, Sauber. 1:27.334 10. Sainz Jr., Toro Rosso. 1:28.945, 100 |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Gets worse again for McLaren. Button came to a stop on the track, and they had to red flag the session. Now looking unlikely that McLaren will be back on track for the rest of the day. Bloody ridiculous. Cannot believe that they are former winners of the F1 title.
---------- Post added at 11:02 ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 ---------- And as I typed that, BBC Sport tells me he has done a further 3 laps in the car. So hopefully he is on the way to doing some serious testing this afternoon. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
And again no shock to learn that McLaren did just as bad today.
1. Maldonado, Lotus. 1:24.348, 104 laps 2. Verstappen, Toro Rosso. 1:24.739, 129 3. Hamilton, Mercedes. 1:26.076, 101 4. Ericsson, Sauber. 1:26.340, 53 5. Vettel, Ferrari. 1:26.407, 105 6. Kvyat, Red Bull. 1:26.589, 111 7. Massa, Williams. 1:26.912, 55 8. Wehrlein, Force India. 1:27.333, 81 9. Bottas, Williams. 1:27.556, 59 10. Button, McLaren. 1:29.151, 24 Total laps after 3 days: 1. Toro Rosso, 323 laps 2. Mercedes, 315 3. Red Bull, 313 4. Williams, 278 5. Ferrari, 269 6. Force India, 268 7. Lotus, 250 8. Sauber, 245 9. McLaren, 104 ---------- Post added at 21:25 ---------- Previous post was at 21:16 ---------- Oh, Ericsson on Day 2 did 113 laps. Too late to go back and edit that in. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
McLaren worried now. Alonso AND Button will both be driving today. If they can't get 100 laps between them today then I'm afraid they might as well just start on designing the 2016 car as they will do crap this season.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Catalunya circuit Twitter feed saying Alonso crashed on Turn 4 and had to have an ambulance called on track. He's OK and conscious though apparently, which is excellent news. Even the likes of Hamilton I wouldn't wish that on.

Now given all clear but McLaren are done with the test. Some bizarre rumours in Spain that Alonso received an electric shock from his car and went unconscious before the crash. Very very unconfirmed rumours, I stress. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Yes, something weird happened. Had to be something with the car as if it was driver error Button would have driven in the afternoon session.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Something not right. Alonso having further tests before being released from hospital is the headline yet the story says he is in intensive care with concussion. Very worrying, I hope this is just a case of them being very cautious after the Bianchi accident last season.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
If it did say that it's been updated now. McLaren have said it's overnighter for obs, nothing more.
Merc looking ominous. They've obviously ironed out their reliability issues from last season, and Rosberg's time was posted on medium tyres - Grosjean was on super sorts for just a 3 tenths advantage! |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
I'm just trying to make some sense of what the testing so far means for the coming season. Obviously Ferrari look a lot better, and so do Lotus. Red Bull look iffy. McLaren have had an appalling pre-season so far BUT if their times have been with a faulty or even non-existent ERS then they have a potentially very quick car on their hands.
So, the way I see it is this: last year the only team to win races other than Merc were RBR, but these generally came when Merc had reliability issues. The only team that really came close to beating a healthy Merc were Williams. Testing suggests that Merc will be much more reliable this year than last, and that they have found some pace, and are comparable with the Lotus and Ferrari and Red Bull even on prime tyres relative to those teams. In other words you still can't see past Merc one-two's for most of the season - if anything I think they'll be even more dominant. But the rest of the field will be very competetive. With reliability sorted I think the coming season will be a pretty dull drive to the titles for Hamilton (sorry, Mark) and Merc, but second place in the constructor's championship could conceivably go to Red Bull, Williams, Ferrari or even McLaren if they sort themselves out quickly. |

But like I say, McLaren need to find something and find it fast. Sad to see such a great team end up being so crap. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
McLaren are this year where everybody else was last year. I'm not worried about them, I think that's a really good car once they sort out all the teething problems, but that might take a little while.

Shame. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Button managed a couple of 12/13 lap stints amongst all that as well. There's definitely a good car in there - I've been saying that all along. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the second part of the season.
Also, despite myself as a Williams fan (and yes, I realise I'm alone in this), I can't help but think the McLaren is the best looking car on the grid. Rumour is McLaren might parachute Stoffel Vandoorne or KMag into Manor alongside the already confirmed Will Stevens in lieu of money owed to them. Caterham now doesn't appear on the entry list. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
So after a good day yesterday, McLaren back to mediocrity again. *sighs*

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Just need to be patient with them. It's a huge change, and they've arguably made it a season too late. They won't win anything this year - they themselves don't expect to even be competetive until the championship is.back in Europe http://www.theguardian.com/sport/201...en-off-pace-f1 - but the car looks incredible - so tightly packed - and it's not as if Honda don't know how to make engines. This will come good for them I'm completely convinced of it.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Worth pointing out that Bottas was on super soft tyres, but still 3 tenths down on Rosberg's fastest lap the other day, which he set on softs. Pirelli reckon the super softs are 8 or 9 tenths quicker than the softs so presumably Merc have still got 1.1 or 1.2 seconds a lap on Williams, which appears to be the next best car. Obviously we don't know fuel loads, what stage of the testing programme either team were at etc and nor have I taken into account the fact that the track was warmer when Rosberg st his time, but either way, they still appear streets ahead.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Alonso to miss the season opening race in Australia, even though they say he made a full recovery from his crash, doctors advise to avoid the race as maybe at risk of another concussion.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Wow. Either there is something not being told about the crash or since Bianchi they are being VERY cautious about concussions now. Hopefully he will be back for the second race.
Wolff will be driving in first practice for Williams in both Spain and Britain. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Manor GP are going to race with Will Steven to drive, other driver TBC.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
As I said in post #157 - obviously KMag will now fill in for Alonso, but Stoffel Vandoorne continues to be very heavily rumoured to be Will Stevens new partner at Manor F1. McLaren are one of the major creditors who have agreed to defer payments owed to them by Manor Motorsport - the rumour is they'll put one of their drivers in the Manor F1 Team car in lieu of some of that debt.

Not sure how true this is but there is a report Alonso wokeup in 1995 after his crash.

Wow, must have been some concussion he had.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Manor have passed todays crash tests on their modified 2014 chassis, so as long as nothing goes pear shaped they should be on the grid in Melbourne.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
The slimmest lineup ever, 10 teams, 20 drivers, and with Manor as the single back marker team, there will be no battle at the back.
F1 is dying, and there seems little that can be done to halt the decline that began with the loss of big-money tobacco sponsorship, and now alcohol sponsorship is in the firing line. It's an expensive sport, and needs sponsors with deep pockets, the era of the gentleman racer giving way to the era of the "flying fag packet", and now the slimmer pickings of the car companies racing for prestige, drinks companies, fuel & oil companies |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Manor have tweeted a photo of the lorry leaving the factory carrying their freight to Melbourne - looks like they've done it!
As far as the grid goes for varying reasons we've had smaller - it'll still be bigger than the last three races of last season, it's significantly bigger than USA '05 because of the Michelin safety recall, and also bigger than Monaco '05 because of BAR's ban, and next year Haas Formula will also come on board. Audi are rumoured to be interested - and I've no doubt there will be some knock on benefit from the decision not to include DTM in the super licence process. I'm not so naive as to think the sport is in rude health, but it's far from dying. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Also FIA might tender for more teams:
Jean Todt - “I am not happy for Marussia and Caterham and I sympathize for them, but it has always happened." “But in 2016 we have a new team coming,” he added, referring to the arrival of the Gene Haas team from the United States. “And we may make a tender again for one or two teams to encourage teams. And try to reduce the costs.” http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/06..._r=1&referrer= |

Gary Hartstein said it's at the upper limit of what's just about the right amount of time to miss, and consistent with a three day stay in hospital, but questions will m ed to be asked if he misses anything after Melbourne.
So far I really think it's a case of "nothing to see here, move along". |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Roberto Mehri is Manor's second driver, at least for the start of the season, and a verdict in the Guido Van Der Garde v. Sauber is expected on Wednesday.
Mehri took part in practice for Caterham in the Italian grand prix when they ran in to difficulty and started punting out space in Kobayashi's car so it's fair to assume he brings some reasonable funding with him, but he does have a reasonable record in the lower formulae. I had wondered if Van Der Garde was relying on compensation from Sauber to pay for the second Manor drive. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
This is getting interesting ...
http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/12...an-court-rules Practice starts in less than two days. Sauber are appealing. Clearly the wholesale driver line-up change was related to money - has it backfired? |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
It is Sauber's fault if he hasn't had testing experience, if they knew that him winning his case was at all likely, however slim the chances, he should have been included in the team as a reserve and drove at least one session during testing.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
This is a legal nightmare. There's no way he can be allowed to race for a team he's had in court. Compensation maybe, but this affects the integrity of the race and the team in question.
- Race integrity, having a guy race that has no incentive to actually perform - Constructors championship, potentially losing points via having a forced driver in the second car. - The other driver now not being able to run. That's just a few issues here. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
He needs a super license to drive, he doesnt have that.

They're not "being forced" to have a driver, they signed the driver up and then reneged on the deal because they saw bigger sponsorship available. Sauber and Manor missing from Friday pratice.
Still no super licence being reported for him and that could take a few days and Manor are missing software to enable them to run. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/201...ian-grand-prix |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Yes, f1 is back! Have just finished watching today's practice sessions with a big grin on my face! So much going on as well. I'm a little nervous that Ferrari have dragged themselves ahead of Williams, but then Williams did sandbag a bit on Fridays last year so fingers crossed that's the case this.
Shame for KMag, I like him and he really only has this chance to impress, but he got himself got caught out. The Sauber thing is beginning to look embarrassing, but both the cars got out for second practice with this year's nominated drivers. I honestly can't see how this is going to be resolved - right mess! |

Button reckons McLaren will be lucky to not qualify at the back of the grid and that he expects neither driver to finish the race on Sunday.

Bottas is a doubt for the race with a back injury. Good qualy session - I enjoyed it. As much as I applaud the effort Manor have made to get to Melbourne it was nice watching a session that was competitive throughout the field, obviously with the game exception of McLaren. Now, do I set my alarm, or my TiVo? |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
The alarm then. Bottas, KMag and Kvyat don't start for various reasons - 15 cars on the grid, and Lotus lose both of theirs on the first lap!
There might be points in this for Jenson Button after all! |
