What else is there for VM to get regarding new channels?! All there is is the piles of dross clogging up Sky's EPG (and Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore)!

Sorry, Vince, but we are limited to either no channels or missable dross.

New Idea:

Maybe Virgin can do the 'Green' button so if you are on say BBC One you will go to BBC One HD in the HD Channel area if you press Green.

Maybe they could add a channel name search like in the TV Anywhere App.

Only come up with an 'HD Channel' area due to Sky putting Lifestyle and Entertainment channels together - that all.

I think ITV ought to concentrate on giving us Dolby sound for broadcasts through my Tivo before giving us another channel. All their flagship programmes in stereo it's shamefull. I get better sound from Amazon Prime.

+1 - and while I'm here, why don't we get Catchup & On Demand progs in 5.1 when they're originally broadcast that way? (Walking Dead for example)

That's something you'd have to ask VM , these shows are available on Sky On Demand with 5.1 not sure about other platforms.

Are you talking about ITV Encore? ITV plc has several revenue streams including advertising, sponsorship, product placement and payment from TV platforms like VM and Sky. If Sky is prepared to pay enough to make up for the loss of revenue from the other sources and a bit more then ITV will do this as it maximises its profits. I would be bemused if they didn't. ;)

There was a discussion here about the commercial terms involved in pay on-demand services like Amazon Prime coming to VM. Some thought VM might get nothing out of the deal. This information about Netflix's entry into France is interesting.
Quote:

Broadband TV News Although Netflix is offering to pay 10% of revenues to ISPs for distributing its service, the usual amount in France is between 30% and a third.
http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2014/...shuns-netflix/

It certainly suggests that companies like VM are likely to get a revenue cut for distributing Netflix in the UK and this will influence which services come to VM. Would VM also get a revenue cut of any advertising on on-demand services too?

Someone at VM seems to be creating new Sky channels. Last week it was the turn of Sky 2 HD and now it's the turn of Sky America.
Regarding Sky Atlantic, it was always Sky's intention to have UK content on it. The Atlantic name was apparently to link the UK and USA.

Movies 24 channels will go Christmas on November 2nd.

I think Sky Movies Showcase or Sky Movies Greats will be use for Sky Movies Christmas (Sky always launch it on December 1st).

Still to see an 'end' date confirmed by True Movies or Virgin Media.

Jesus. I like Christmas but it starts so early every year that by the time December 25 comes round I am sick of it and cannot wait for it to be over. And I bet the movies are rubbish as well.

agreed OB! At least have a christmas channel during the advent calendar season...but we're nearer august summer holidays than christmas right now and yet there is a movie channel....so christmas technically lasts 20% of the year now.

I hope not, female-focused channel full of nothing but weepies. You're not missing much from my humble perspective! But obviously it appeals to some, but only enough to be satellite only (Sky/Freesat).
However, the True Movies website is being updated at the moment so worth checking back in a couple of days. http://www.truemovies.com/

This is the interesting bit relevant to the UK, considering the Sky deal:

Quote:

All over the world, HBO partners will also be preparing for this. Game of Thrones has typically been sold exclusively to one broadcaster per territory, and we will have to see how long it takes before HBO can wrest this content out from under existing partners so that it can go direct.

It could take years (we expect it to)

Do people really think HBO didn't have this idea planned in January 14 when this deal with BSKYB was signed.

I was reading news stories a year or two back saying HBO would consider streaming direct to the customer going forward.

HBO prefers their content to be tied to a provider so that the save on promotional and admin costs.

I personally think that the changing way that many people consume content now (i.e. streamed) has effectively forced them down a route that they would have preferred not to have gone down.

LOL, I seem to recall suggesting (as did others) HBO could do something similar when the last deal was signed. I also seem to recall being shot down in flames by certain members, for suggesting anyone but Sky could show HBO programming in the UK - even though the press release was not clear on streaming rights or having HBOgo as an app on TIVO.

It's a shame you did not post links to the stories you read at the time, it may have saved myself and other members, who posted their thoughts on the possibility of HBO launching a streaming service, from a fair amount of ridicule.

Never mind though, eh.

Only just read it myself , I used one of the many search engines available.;)

My original views on the subject were purely based on the fact I couldn't see any firm paying that kind of money for exclusive rights when the content could be shown on subscription elsewhere.

Interestingly, that article refers to co-productions with BSkyB. I imagine BSkyB would retain repeat rights for such productions in the UK. But I don't know how significant this part of the deal was.

Yeah, okay.

Anyway, what with all the recent talk about Sky America and the possibility of HBO streaming coming, is there a stream of thought that the best new American shows will go to Sky America (which will be exclusive to Sky) and Atlantic will just keep the shows it already has and will be released to other providers?

Apologies if anyone has suggested this before.

It's good to speculate about Sky America. But I can't really see the commercial benefit to Sky of the above scenario. They've spent a lot of money building the Sky Atlantic brand, why would they want to change it?

I first spotted America HD back in March:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/92...ming-soon.html

When I asked the guys at Lounge Lab I got the following reply:

"Thank you for making us aware of this - good detective work. Would you be able to upload a photo of the letter so we can see the full version?

In terms of America HD - it's got us somewhat confused. We think it may refer to BBC America HD which is an American digital cable and satellite television network that is owned as a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Discovery Communications. It is not funded by the license fee and only available in the US. But not a channel we have on Sky. Or do you think they mean Sky Atlantic HD?"

Sounds like yet another advertising / marketing mistake from Virgin Media

Sunday news:

- Looks like Viacom have decided not to close Channel 5+24.

- Not sure where 5* +1 will go when it returns.

- Viacom want Spike TV to be carried on VM from next year.

- LFC HD in "very early talks" with a view to be carried on VM.

VM, along with other parties, have been invited to tender for the remaining equipment at the former BBC Television Centre.

IIRC, on offer are a satellite farm and items/sets from Doctor Who, Match Of The Day, Newsnight etc.

Anyone can tender (private individuals included), if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll get the info. for you :)

Thanks for the link Joglynne, i'll create a new thread to stop this thread drifting off topic.

I've asked around on my sources no-one has heard of Sky America, my sources think VM may have got mixed up with either 5USA or Sky Atlantic Most likely just a error though from VMs press team.

Monday update from Media Boy HQ.

Movies 24 confirmed launch date for Christmas 24.

Movies 24 has confirm that Christmas 24 will launch on November 1st (Not November 2nd as first reported by me).

Some UKTV channels added to XL on Demand.

Over the past weekend Media Boy HQ has seen that Watch, Home and Good Food has been added to XL on Demand over the past month.

If it follows 2, 3 & 4 HD it would go in the XL pack only
