Re: TV Anywhere Android App

It's in the notes on the app page and on the Virgin media page 4.4 not supported,

http://www.virginmedia.com/apps/andr...where/devices/

As most Nexus 7's have had the update unless you want to roll back to 4.3 it's a no go

paultrademark 28-11-2013 12:22

I've just read it all now too, not too happy we will need to wait on an update!

Only due to the fact the 4.4 is not support yet hopefully it won't be long, I'm hoping they only had 4.3 to work with and 4.4 wasn't available for testing etc.

Unless there is something you need in KitKat you could roll back to 4.3?

I guess. Just more faff. I was really looking forward to watching sky sports on my Nexus as soon as it came out though.

I guess my expectations were just too high.

You can only watch sky sports on tv anywhere on a laptop not a mobile device.

Is a bit annoying that you can't watch sky premium channels on the app, but it's brilliant for controlling the TiVo box.

It's not an 'anywhere' app at all then. Crap.

That's been the case since it launched for iOS, and says it all over the content for TV Anywhere e.g http://store.virginmedia.com/discove...app/watch.html

Take a peek at all these live channels you can watch right on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. You just need to have them in your TV package and be able to connect to WiFi.

The lack of 3G streaming is astounding really, you'd think it would be a minimum requirement for an app called 'TV anywhere'

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

Streaming doesn't work on my phone - which makes it no better than TiVo Commander which we had 18 months ago. In fact TiVO Commander was a lot quicker.

Managed to get streaming to work on my sons tablet, but it streams very few channels (mainly the UKtv ones). It doesn't stream Sky channels like Sky Go does.

Very disappointing.

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

When I had VM TV and the iOS app what I hated was not being able to view over a 3G/4G signal. Since moving to Sky and having Sky Go now, I am finally able to watch stuff anywhere I get a mobile signal. VM's lack of this feature is a real let down and in my opinion they need to rename it to something more appropriate as it certainly isn't TV Anywhere, unless you've always got a wifi/bb connection.

I couldn't find it on the Play Store either, try the below:-

Put http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ in your browser

Enter "com.virginmedia.tvanywhere" (with out the quotes) and click "Generate Download Link"

You will need to enable "Unknown sources" in Settings -> Security.

Well got it installed, glad it's here at last! Had a quick play and it looks good. My phone is on wifi at work and streaming is working on my Samsung S3 mini so a good start. The lack of Sky Sports streaming is a big miss for me though.

All this time waiting and I'll have to wait some more as Kitkat is not supported.

Also, to those complaining about no streaming over 3/4G, wasn't there a post possibly in this thread saying if you tether your phone to your tablet you can use said tablet to watch TV anywhere??

Apparently you are not allowed to do this and "Apparently" the phone networks can tell where you are getting your so called unlimited data from. Even though both my phone and tablet actively encourage making themselves wifi hotspots.
Having just got the Kitkat update which is essentially no different i am beyond caring anymore.

Although I do obviously hope that 4.4 support comes as soon as possible, percentage wise it's going to take a while for most devices to go above 4.3

---------- Post added at 14:01 ---------- Previous post was at 14:00 ----------

In the short to medium term, getting more devices tested and added to the compatible list is going to help more that 4.4 support

Seems very unlikely that anything other than android and iOS will ever be supported to be honest, just isn't enough users on the other operating systems to make it viable.

Hi Martin,

Kindle HD Fire is an Android slate (beleive 4.0 but could be wrong). It's just heavily modified and has no access to the Google play store (have to use the Amazon App store instead).

That's how we use it.

Kids view using the iPad tethered from my iPhone, I'm on Three with unlimited data and tethering included in the plan.

Works fine so I can't understand the reason they don't allow you to use it over 3G/4G. I've even had a laptop, 2 iPads and another iPhone all using my connection at the same time and TVAnywhere still worked on the iPad.

Got to admit is it really comical for all the wrong reasons. Only VM would do something like this.

I'd be fuming and gutted if it was me.

At least it works well enough on my S3. Though not sure I'd use it much over the ipad's version. Still it's good to have the option and to be able to record when I'm out.

Hopefully they'll update it for 4.4 soon.

I have a funny feeling it won't be updated for Kitkat until Jan/Feb 2014 when the likes of HTC and Samsung roll out their version of KitKat. Then there will be more pressure to get it updated.

I can see where VM are coming from, get the app released for the majority and hope the minority don't complain too much. AFAIK it is only the Nexus devices running Kitkat so they are hoping for damage limitation.

However, I have to say the link you provide hardly causes any major issues.

This does seem like a poor launch from VM. For the amount of time it has taken, it would have been nice to see more devices supported. I feel very sorry for the many customers who are with Virgin Mobile are missing out on a pretty decent bit of kit.

Smacks of desperation, and poor coding, that an app is not compatible with the latest version of android. Especially as it is designed to be as backward compatible as possible.
Someone realised they said it would be released in 2013, and hit the panic button. I am in software development and see this all the time.

The problem of using the cheapest contractor, sometimes, you need to bite the bullet and release the project to someone else.

Daaaargh!
It says this app is incompatible with my device. Galaxy Note.

I don't have any interest in the streaming side of it, but all this time I've wanted a replacement for Tivo Commander. And one of the more popular phones isn't supported, even for remote control.

The remote features. Away from your home network you can still record, delete and manage series links.

I'm just not going to get a tivo. That blackmail is not going to work.

There's also a TVCatchup app for streaming channels, some of which aren't available on the TV Anywhere app anyway

Don't forget you need the latest version of Flashplayer. It's no good going back to the archives.

That's been my experience with exactly the same set up.

I've now tried it with firefox but still no joy.

I have the version for android jellybean.

If the device wont even register i'd suggest it doesn't matter what version of flash is being used?

Oh, FFS! Not compatible with Kitkat!

This is what happens when development takes far too long. God knows how many Android updates Google have pushed out since this app was first announced 3 years ago. 4.4 wasn't exactly a state secret either and my existing video apps work just fine with it on my Nexus devices.

Will it be another 3 year wait until the app gets updated for Android 4.4?

The code for 4.4 has been available for 2 and a half months, so not ages. The app is compatible with 2.2 - 4.3 so covers most versions.

Not denying it will need to be compatible, but only the Nexus devices have KitKat at the moment, so it's not a huge issue either

Couldn't agree more, been waiting for a year for this app and now not compatable with 4.4 which my Nexus 4 and 7 have been updated to last week.
As you say it wasn't excatly a secret about 4.4 launching, so is it going to take another year to sort it for 4.4. Shambolic!

It says this app is incompatible with my device. Galaxy Note.

I don't have any interest in the streaming side of it, but all this time I've wanted a replacement for Tivo Commander. And one of the more popular phones isn't supported, even for remote control.

You couldn't make it up...

Is it the original Galaxy Note? If so I can confirm that the app is most definitely compatible. The only thing that currently doesn't work is streaming.

And yet, those devices are on the compatible list:

No

So how come other apps have managed to update in 2 and a half months and Virgin have not?

Because they had an existing app up and running.

Sky Go only added support for the Nexus 5 / KitKat on the 18th

BBC iPlayer on the 12th November.

Unfortunately that's if they are running 4.3, not 4.4

I have asked that it's made a bit clearer on the device list

Could anyone still running 4.3 on Nexus 10 or who has a different compatible 10 inch tablet please extract the apk and share it on here.

I have managed to sideload it and it works on 4.4 on Nexus 10 but I can only seem to get hold of phone version online which is stuck in portrait mode. The page says the version varies with device so there must be a tablet version which should install on a compatible device.

Thanks in advance.

OK, but the vast majority of Nexus devices will be running 4.4 by now. I had the prompt to upgrade from 4.3 earlier this week. The whole point of Nexus devices is to get Android updates first.

Would you rather it delayed until they had it working with 4.4? I am sure testing of updates and newer software versions are in the works.

At least it is now out and lots of people can use it.

When I try to view TV anywhere through the firefox browser on my PC it works. When I try it through FF on my Nexus it doesn't because I don't have the latest version of FlashPlayer on my android. When invited to download it it turns out that Adobe are no longer supporting the android platform with the latest version of FlashPlayer.Ergo lots of things won't play in android because they are Flashplayer based.

Hope that clarifies matters.

If you sideload it you won't get any updates and it's not supported if you can't get it working.

Exactly

Once it is compatible with Android 4.4 I will automatically get updates from Google Play. I'd rather use a sideloaded version for the moment than none at all.

You'd have to know it's updated. Sideloaded apps won't update automatically

They do. I sideloaded updated Netflix app a few weeks ago and I have received several automatic updates since then..

My HTC Desire x is supported, athough it can't stream channels. Is streaming likely to be "coming soon"?

But that's not really the point is it , the BBC and Sky app were already out to the general public and running on earlier versions of Android , its crazy to launch a product to the entire customer base that's not been previously available on Android and not include access for those on the latest version of Android as you've said the code was out a few months ago which is plenty of time to include it.

But as Stephen said, where do you draw the line?

Most Nexus devices have only had the update within the last 14 days or so, but the TVA app will have been in testing before then. So to test against all the Nexus devices with 4.4 would have meant pushing back the app launch.

Yes I understand all of that. You're earlier posts seemed to suggest that you'd be able to do this on an android tablet, which I didn't think was the case, and why I queried it. Thanks for reply.

whats the point in this since you need wifi? at least sky lets you use 3g/4g and doesn't lag at all so they can't use that as an excuse, plus you cant even watch sports which is all i care about.
