Well that's Game of Thrones series 3,4,5,6,7,8, & 9 not going to be legally watched by Virgin customers. Well done Sky for promoting piracy.

With Sky Atlantic idents either side with the words "watch season 2 exclusively on Sky Atlantic"

Season 1 was repeated 2 years after it first aired. Do you think people will wait? With so many spoilers going around. Most people will torrent it.

There have only been 5 books written with two scheduled so series 9 is unlikely lol.

How are they promoting piracy? - the option is yours of going to Sky or not.

I will wait and only watch it if it turns up on Sky One. I'm sure that S1 had the same "exclusively on Sky Atlantic" bit.

I think the DVDs are over priced and I don't torrent shows, so I'll wait and see if it turns up on Sky One.

I was being sarcastic about the 2019 contract renewal date!

And because some people can't have Sky dishes on their properties so therefore don't have a choice.

Don't forget Virgin's 'Music On Demand', which has tons of music on it. Personally, I wouldn't trade this for extra music channels which are interrupted by advertising every three records.

There is nothing to prevent VM from sitting down with Sky or anyone else for that matter, to add channels to an ongoing contract. If they wanted to, that is.

No they are clearly happy to keep hold of it as a exclusive unless vm pay a kings ransom for it,I do think we will see it before 2019 but its a long way off at the minute

France 24 is a decent enough news channel however I'm not so sure about the French language being exclusive to VM , France 24 is readily available free on the web , ipad , android , connected TV's. The ipad app has a live feed available in English , French and Arabic.

It will be any of the following:

A) Free Channel number - with France 24 English moving down one at an later date.
B) Fox News or CCTV News

But it will not be RT as Virgin as not put room for RT HD to be added as well.

The point of my post; a friendly jibe at our Sky friends, who actually have way more exclusive channels than we do.

This is what happens when a popular programme is only available on a restricted/subscription access channel. No strong opinion on this, just stating what happens.

Thousands pirate Game of Thrones series three opener

The opening episode of the third series of Games of Thrones was the most pirated ever, according to TorrentFreak.

Agreed, but this shows what is wrong with licensing policy in the UK and the rights to exclusivity – may be fine for first show but should not restrict content provider to allow alternative routes to market e.g. Internet subscription services a month after first viewing not a year+ afterwards! This would fit well with Tivo maybe and other content based delivery solutions

Perhaps BT and VM should join up to force a review of exclusivity periods Sky have and any other party with first view exclusive rights on content for that matter. No issue on them paying to get first view rights but the issue I see in the market is the right to review through other sources within a reasonable time period.

I guess this requirement is the equivalent of films at cinemas as first view and then the subsequent availability of the film on DVD or on-demand/subscription purchase.

I agree with you, PC. Whilst I do not think any content provider should be permitted to do a deal to provide exclusive content to their own channel unless they make that channel available to other platforms in the conventional way (wholesale price), I could live with a situation where this could apply for the first year only. Two years might be just bearable.

However, to continue it beyond that is just plain unreasonable and it means that a sizeable section of the population is denied the opportunity of seeing certain programmes.

My hope is that BT will break down this practice. If it buys exclusive content for its new entertainment channels (which I anticipate will be coming soon), it should be able to persuade Sky to stop this irritating practice. I don't think Sky would want to be in a position where BT had content that they had no access to themselves.

.

You're preaching to the choir, and at the same time, banging your head against [the studio's] brick wall. They see more money in exclusive deals and that's all they care about; not getting the creator's work to a wider audience at a fair and reasonable profit margin.

I don't obtain pirated shows, but I do wonder if it's the people that do that will eventually bring the studios to their senses. After all, it was pirating that woke the music industry up and forced them into providing reasonably priced, legal streaming music services.

If HBO has any sense they'll do their own channel when the SA deal runs out, they already do Sweden/Norway I think. Can't imagine Sky are paying them more than they could make from subscriptions from any TV providers customers.

SKY are paying HBO £30 million per year.

HBO will also be making plenty of money from the UK market by way of Blink box on demand plus DVD and Blu-Ray sales.

It all comes down to what makes sense in terms of cost effectiveness. How much would it cost HBO to set up their own channel in the UK, and how much could they make from individual carriage deals from SKY, Virgin and BT?

To better their current deal with SKY, cover their set-up costs and cover the potential downturn in on demand and DVD sales, HBO would need to be making about £40 million per year in carriage deals to make it worth their while.

Maybe the viewing figures for SKY Atlantic will put HBO off. Only 8% of SKY’s overall customer base regularly watches SKY Atlantic. SKY, Virgin and BT have roughly 15,200,000 subscribers in total. Based on SKY Atlantic viewing figures only about 1,216,000 people would watch SKY Atlantic / HBO UK if it launched across all platforms.

HBO with their current SKY deal are probably laughing all the way to the bank.

You would think, but I heard from someone I know involved with the Sky Atlantic deal the money put on the table by Sky was so ridiculous compared with the longer payback of establishing a new channel independently HBO just went for it.
Advertisers lose out on viewing numbers by being only available to Sky customers but are probably charged a premium for the more upmarket demographic of the audience.
It was said that the channel was going to be wholesaled once it was available via Sky's IP service Now TV, but it has gone very quiet regarding the entertainment channels on that platform.

You'd like to think Discovery included them in the deal so we don't have another Sky Movies Classics situation.

As long as HBO can keep its subscriber base and fund the show as well as profit I doubt they care too much about people downloading their shows. If they weren't a subscription channel they couldn't make the shows they do make because of the rules on USTV, but because they are a premium subscription channel it encourages people who cant or wont pay to steal.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I don't agree with piracy, but I do think there is an argument to be made that allowing a company to acquire first run, second run and on demand rights means that more people are likely to do it. That said, there was a recent study that suggested that piracy hadn't actually hurt the music industry at all financially as people who downloaded copied songs would never have actually paid for them even if that was the only way to obtain them, so perhaps Sky and hbo don't care too much.

DaMac 03-04-2013 19:29

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Indeed the millions that the mpaa argue is lost every year due to pirate DVDs isn't in fact lost because most people who acquire knock off wouldn't go to the cinema in the first place, Infact aren't cinema audiences at some sort of 20 year high?

MB Opinion: Where will S4C go on April 30th?

Last week Discovery reveal that TLC will relaunch in the UK and Ireland on Virgin Channel 167 on April 30th.

But Channel 167 is home to S4C right now...

So I am working with one of the following lineups from April 30th:

A)

166. S4C
167. TLC
168. TLC HD
169. TLC +1

OR B)

167. TLC
168. TLC HD
169. S4C

Now that Travel Channel is owned by Scripps, maybe it will at last return to cable. That would be a decent channel to have, I missed it when it left our screens some years ago.

I think that was one of the reasons that Sky wanted HBO type content, which is generally critically acclaimed, and why they wanted to keep it exclusive to Sky. Whether true or not, they perceived that type of content as raising the general quality bar of Sky as a whole.

(C) for me would be, 'I don't care'. ;)

But that is because I record everything I watch and set recordings up using the EPG. Because I don't watch live TV, except for the BBC news channel, I don't channel hop, and the only number I need to remember is 601.

Splitting hairs here, and getting into dangerous territory, but the fact that VM have had fast, reliable fibre broadband for a long time, would be one of my takes on it.

And although they lagged behind Sky on this, when VM did get a PVR, it had more functionality than Sky boxes; 3 tuners on V+ as against 2 on Sky+, and then Tivo's much greater functionality compared to Sky's current box.

I also think having all repairs to equipment included in the price adds a layer of quality to cable's offering, compared to Sky.

The above would be my considerations that make cable a better quality product over Sky. For other people, different criteria will apply.

Who the heck watches S4C anyway?! I would imagine S4C would probably end up at channel 141, next to the rest of the Channel 4 channels. Or if I'm being rather silly, VM could put it in the 190s "dumping ground" at channel 199!!!:D

Nope it's on 167 in all franchise areas

http://www.s4c.co.uk/e_how_digital.shtml

Has anyone seen any other article quoting the proposed channel numbers, as it doesn't make sense (Virgin 167 is already used for S4C, Sky 125 carries Challenge)? TLC has always been quoted as a lifestyle channel, which would make 268/269 or 277/278 (next to the existing Discovery Lifestyle channels) the obvious placement on Virgin.

Don't understand your point here, Colin. Sky Atlantic is only on Sky satellite. So therefore the quality of the channel reflects on the provider.

l have 'seen this on Media Boys Blog'.

I am not sure how definite this is but I was chatting to a VM tech working on the clamshell box on the side of the block of flat where I live this morning - he has been to my premises several times over the years and is friendly and chatty. I mentioned about Vintage TV and the 2 French channels that launched today and he said that there were several more channels all set to go this month, possibly one or two on every Tuesday & Thursday of April but not sure which ones when...

Firstly, you mean let Chad (nice guy that he is) get away with an unsubstantiated attack on one of Tivo's main advantages over other PVRs?

And secondly, when has this thread ever stayed on topic? That's why we like it so much and what makes it such a popular thread. ;)

And yes, of course, I did know carl's status. ;)

If MRS worked on all channels, as it should, then we would have 6 tuners and a recording capacity of up to 2Tb

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

As I like sitting on the fence I'd have to say I'd like a mixture of TIVO/Sky+HD

Sky+HD menu speed

TIVO three tuners

Sky+HD start a show or On Demand at a viewer desired location (ie input 20 mins)

TIVO wishlist and clash management

Sky+HD OD menu UI easier to find shows in my opinion

TIVO search

Sky+HD back to back recordings on same channel (granted more important if you only have two tuners

TIVO backwards EPG

Sky+HD dynamic EPG and larger capacity HDD options
