Re: The price of your Virgin Media service is going up

as for vm price increase, i did a compare on sky website it worked out about £15 more expensive and just got off the phone with sky and they still couldnt match in price what services i got with vm even with vm price increse, iam not sticking up for vm or having a go at sky they both have there good and bad points, i know sky got more channels, more hd etc, the point is have a look around at other providers.

I too have just done a comparison and, this time, the prices have actually come out very nearly the same.

On the one hand, Sky has more HD channels but a slower broadband speed (only <10mb compared to VM's 30mb) but, of course, VM has Tivo which, for me, is the deal-breaker!

The other point being, of course, that I'm not actually paying the VM price listed; though only around a tenner less; which is a little annoying :( :)

You're paying £10 less, or £10 more?

Seriously? Would anyone pay more than the listed price for anything?

I know I've been accused of being a "VM fanboi" but really?! ;)

So why are you annoyed that you're paying £10 less?

It's weird  :(

Is it too expensive and you want it cheaper?

Perhaps annoyed was the wrong word. Was just hoping for a bigger discount. You know, what with me being paid by VM to defend them on forums 24 hours a day ;):p::D

(Please note the heavy sarcasm in the above comment.)

not this one (sky still the cheaper at half price for 12 months):

https://staffiaf.sky.com/november-20...81%29/uk-offer

I got this offer deal for 1 year with free 1TB HD box with full sky packages with HD too for just £32.87 a month plus £10 sky unlimited fibre broadband up to 76 Meg with unlimited sky talk with line rental. That's prove that virgin media are evil greedy too expensive and still twices price increase in the last 10 months (April 2012 and February 2013)

Of course that is a staff "family and friends" offer and not available to the public. I don't know what VM's "Mates Rates" are but you will need to know to compare like with like.

So you can BT Infinity with Sky Line Rental, or Sky fibre broadband with a TalkTalk line rental?

Well you could technically but that's beside the point. You don't pay BT line rental when you have Sky broadband with a Sky landline.

"We're sorry you're are unhappy about how the price rises affect you and would rather that you stayed with BT as we believe we offer fantastic services and products. We've kept a number of our key prices frozen since December 2011 and will be freezing many of our prices again from the 5 January 2013 until 2014 at the earliest. However if you contact us directly within 10 calendar days of receiving our price change notification you may cease your services without penalty. "

Much, much easier for the customer to find and understand when compared to Virgins offering which is stuck at the bottom of the page in small light grey font. You then click on the link, and if you don't know what you are looking for, get stuck in a world of head hurting terms and conditions.

http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...?buspart=EM_56

"If you do not wish to be bound by these changes you can cancel your contract with us without penalty. The process to be followed is set out in our terms and conditions at virginmedia.com/legalstuff"

Virgin need to look at what BT do and follow their example. It shouldn't be the customers responsibility to hunt down the section of the terms and conditions which allows them to cancel their services. Virgin are hiking the prices. The very least they can do is make all information readily available and crystal clear for everyone to understand.

I'll let VM know that they can reduce their cancellation clause to 10 days to match BT, rather than the 30 days they allow at the moment.

That would be great. As long as people are well and clearly informed up front they will know what to do and how to do it within those 10 days. Currently people don't fully know or understand their options. Previous posts here, and in other threads since Virgin started announcing price increases have made this very clear.

Giving people 10 days and clear instructions would be a great leap forward. It beats sending people on a wild goose chase through terms and conditions they may not understand or easily misinterpret.

As a customer, I know what I would prefer. I however suspect Virgin have no appetite to make it easy for customers to leave when hiking prices, well not as easy as BT. Are Virgin treating customers fairly? Not as fairly as others, in my opinion.

It's so blindingly obvious I really don't understand why you're trying to one-up me; again

I know nothing about the offer, but while exploring options following notification of a £5+ price hike I came across:
http://www.vouchercodes.co.uk/offer/...hs-half-price/

No friends or family required (though there are plenty of forums where people are offering to get you a code as I think they get entered into a competition or something!).

As already pointed out, £9+ price hike in one year, so over 20%, is extrmely disappointing. The sooner that the investigation is undertaken into price hikes during minimum term contracts by telcos (and found in the consumer's favour if there is any justice) the better.

I know we have the option to leave with this increase by giving 30 days notice (if I understood correctly) but can we give more than 30 days notice? So keep the current price until 1st Feb by giving notice now that we want to leave on that date?

Many thanks

So, from this forum, XL TV increases by £2, Line rental by £1.09 - I have an extra .50p to account for, I have 30MB broadband & Talk Unlimited, which of those two is going up by 50p?

bonzoe 24-11-2012 17:07

Re: The price of your Virgin Media service is going up

Mine's going up by £3.74.............have XL tv £2, paid upfront for 12 months line rental, so £1.74 for BB and talk evening\weekends seems steep?

Why can't VM provide a proper price breakdown in the letter? Or at least a link to the new prices, I haven't found a breakdown on VMs site.

Have received my letter advising an increase of £2.24 which I assume from this thread is £1.09 line rental plus £1.15 broadband. The letter suggests opting for Line Rental saver which I would be happy to do. However I receive a monthly discount for a retentions deal and wonder whether I would keep this if I took up the Line Rental saver. Can anyone advise?

Thanks for your advice progers. However I have now found the following thread in which BenMcr states that if you are on one of the newer 2 year retentions deals you are not also eligible for line rental saver.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/59...on-page-2.html

Looks like a call to retentions is needed to see if it applies to my deal. Will post again once I have an answer.

Decided to ring retentions (choose option 5 moving home) this morning to make sure I got a local call centre. Confirmed that I could pay £120 for line rental saver saving £3.90 a month without any effect on my monthly discount despite this being classed as a promotional offer running to May 1914. :)

If you've already paid your line rental upfront (saver option) can they legally ask for more during the 12 months ? Surely any line rental increase should apply after that period.

If you have opted into our Line Rental Saver product your price change includes a line rental increase of £1.09. However, you will not receive the line rental increase until the end of the 12-month Line Rental Saver offer period. This date can be found on your bill.

If you choose to take up Line Rental Saver for a further 12 months then you will continue to make savings.

They can (and will) put the monthly line rental up, but as you have paid it already (in one lump sum) then that's it.

I think what Ben is saying is that the £2.84 is for your bundle. Because you have payed your line rental upfront your increase will be £1.75, reverting to £2.84 when and if you return to paying monthly for line rental.

Makes sense now. The letter just mentions a bill increase, it could have added this won't affect any prepaid items.

Thanks for clearing that up Digi Tel.

Unbelievable.

Just had a call for me to stay.

I can not believe the lies this company will spill out.

Apparently the reason why my internet kept breaking down was because I was using it alot!!!

Obviously not due to the fact that the AMP in the cabinet was broken or alot of the cabinets in the area have doors wide open and nodes sat there with car damage etc...

Pretty much confirmed leaving is the best thing...

What with constant youtube buffering issues, hell, buffering issues on a number of video sites, I'm gonna use this price increase to cancel my vm service, it's just not worth the money.

Wow, they do say some odd things to try and get you to stay

When I said I was switching to Bt or Sky Fibre, the lady said I wouldn't get anywhere near the upload speeds that Virgin offered, because it "still comes down the phone line", where as the virgin media service is "completely fibre optic"

When I said we live close to the cabinet, so should get near the top end of the 80mb down, 20mb up speed, she said she'd never heard anyone or any product that would come even close to it.

Went on to say, even with the "fibre boost" on my "phone line", I still wouldn't get the speeds that I quoted

.....lol

Got a letter this morning. Mine is going up £4.24 a month - that's almost 10% increase.

The letter also says I can save money by paying line rental up front. It says this will save me £55 a year. Then in the next sentence it goes on to say that by doing this I will save £130 a year. How can a saving of £55 be equal to a saving of £130?

Not pleased.

you need to read the whole paragraph:

Quote:

You’ve already opted for eBilling and Direct Debit, which is great as it means you save £81 a year, but here’s another easy way we can help you keep your costs down:

• Opt for Line Rental Saver – you’ll save over £55 a year by paying for 12 months’ line rental upfront^

That’s a total yearly saving of over £130 right there. You can find out how to cut the cost of your bill at virginmedia.com/changes
£81 + £55 = £136

When I said we live close to the cabinet, so should get near the top end of the 80mb down, 20mb up speed, she said she'd never heard anyone or any product that would come even close to it.

Went on to say, even with the "fibre boost" on my "phone line", I still wouldn't get the speeds that I quoted

Im shocked at how consistent the retentions department are with those lies. Gave me all the same crap too. Told me I wouldn't get above 8mb with any other provider and then it would be more like 3mb. Pretty much called me a liar when I said I could get 40 or 80mb fibre elsewhere. Also got the stuff about VM being the only provider that gives the customer fibre to the property and when questioned about fibre only going to the cabinet, was told I was wrong.

Its obvious they are trained to tell those lies as so many are hearing the same from them. What kind of association/regulator could you report that issue too though?

Still not got my letter about increases but maybe its because I have cancelled already.

"paying line rental up front. It says this will save me £55 a year" - how do you actually apply for this, there seems nothing online through my account so do I just ring up?

We wanted to let you know that, from 1st February 2013*, the price of your Virgin Media services will increase by £4.34 a month. It's never nice when prices go up but it means we can continue to give you the best home entertainment and services.

Yea, when I said I was close to the cabinet, so should get near the max 20/80, she said the distance to the cabinet wouldn't matter.

Strange considering she seemed to think that Fibre went down the telephone line. ;)

Its Fibre to the cabinet then telephone cable to the property, so a large distance could make a difference like adsl, but they try and make it sound so much worse. As if theirs is the only real fibre.

When I said I had a cabinet right across the street the VM woman told me that it doesn't matter, as I didn't know if the cable came out the left or the right of that cabinet lol.

Yea! our one is going up by £4 a month, in fact our latest bill arrived today, £88.40, that's gone up from £82.00 when we first came back to them from Sky last year?

Just phone customer services, you need a credit or debit card to pay it; I just paid up front.

As we've been over a few times now, that's now how Virgin sell the service anymore. They are sold as a bundle, so the price increase is based on the total, not per service.

Pretty much every communications company has tried pulling those sort of lines on me (except O2, who were completely honest and straight up). Sad thing is, many lesser-informed average consumers would actually believe them.

That is just a way of hiding the costs form the customers. Sky for example do bundle deals but they still break down the cost each month for each part of the bundle.

Its not good enough to answer that "we do this this way because we can".

Sorry Lyn how long have you been using Virgin  I am guessing at least since 2007. You really need to ask that question :erm: Nothing virgin does,is clear, straightforward or simple. System set up by the same people that create utility companies billing I suspect:D

I totally agree, VERY poor customer service from VM. (and Ben is usually very helpful)

Come on VM, provide a price breakdown so that we can see how the costs are made up (or have you got something to hide, or shall I put it another way, if you cannot be transparent it indicates that something is being hidden from us)

I've been with VM since they took over from whoever was running the show before them. Stuck with cable since the days when it was Jones Cable, which is going back a long way

It just really ticks me off when prices go up but they aren't explained and you phone up and get some patronising person who can't really speak English just repeating themselves parrot fashion. I want to know why my friend and also my son have the same 3 XL packages I have but my bill is going up £1.10 a month more. I don't think it's a lot to ask for a reason or do they just pick a figure out of thin air

I only have broadband from VM, but if the price does increase then that is the push I need to move to the opposition! Then I will be able to seamlessly stream from YouTube and BBC iPlayer without buffering, just like my neighbour does on PlusNet Fibre!

Yes, as per the terms and conditions you can cancel, which it does say on the letters and on the price change website

Got my letter today, £5.59 a month rise for me.

Seems rather a lot, and certainly way over the official inflation rate (actually it's a 7.67% increase).

I'll research what else I can get for my money (which I was planning to do anyway) before making a decision.

The current figure is £57.70 (2 months @ £13.90 and 10 months @ £14.99), but that could go up to £59.88 if you didn't do it till 1st Feb (12 months @ £14.99)

Re: The price of your Virgin Media service is going up

The prices are going up again in February 2013 according to there web site, this will be the FOURTH time in 12 months, how can they justify this.

They claim that they are bringout out better services next year - we have heard this all before from VM.

I am trying my best to go back to Sky. I came to VM on the promises that CS gave us about new channels joining and better HD channels coming that would be equal to Sky. Well we all know the result.

If the increases go up any further, then they will equal Sky.

What? The Feb 2013 increases are the ones that are being advised of now. So that's the third increase - not the fourth.

To be honest I don't think any of them think of loyalty, they both treat their customers badly. We have been with both of them in the past.

Another thing I've noticed is, that you never get a direct answer to a direct question, and the only time they pat attention to you is when you call them up to tell them you are leaving?

Click on the link below to see your options in regards to your T&C's. You can walk away as long as you cancel within 30 days of being notified of your price increase.

My contract is up in Feb and only thing stopping me from moving now is BT Infinity is predicting a service start date of 31st December so once that is confirmed I'll be off. Will avail myself of the 12 months half price Sky offer plus Infinity to cover the broadband. On VIP100 and price going up by £5.59 a month.
