Yes, you can undo an upgrade. If you have an XP box, you can upgrade it to Win8. At that point your XP license is no longer usable.

Later, you can remove the upgrade, which restores the OEM XP license to the original machine. At that point the upgrade is once again available to be applied to any PC you own, provided it has a license for Windows that qualifies it for upgrade.

You can do this as many times as you want on your own hardware.

I need to see in writing from a few sources that i am able to downgrade the windows 8 upgrade to my full boxed version of windows 7.

As i said it is confusing and i was sure i saw something yesterday that said i couldn't do it but have lost the links.

Ignore what version you have, what matters is what the upgrade licence allows you to do.

So does that mean I can upgrade my oem version of windows 7 pro that I got through the microsoft site for £24.99

Or does this only apply to pc's bought in the shops and everyone else who owns windows 7 has to pay the full £100 price?

Windows 8 Pre orders are now open.

Quote:

Microsoft has officially kicked-off Windows 8 pre-order sales for those who want a retail packaged version of the platform. The offer, made available today, is a packaged DVD of the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $69.99. You can find this deal right now on Amazon, Bestbuy, Staples, Office Depot, and of course, Microsoft stores.
Amazon have the boxed pro upgrade version for £49.99 for people who want the physical DVD, but if you don't want the DVD then the download price will be £24.99 i believe, or £14.99 for people who have bought a new PC with Windows 7 on and wish to take advantage of a cheap upgrade.

Any idea how long the discount offer is available for? I bought a new Sony touchscreen PC a few weeks ago and am still considering what to do about upgrading to W8. As has been already said, I don't want to just dive in and then find out I don't like it and it's a whole heap of hassle getting back to Win7.

This is the reason i plan on buying it for £24.99 even if i decide never to install it as the price will shoot up after.

The £25 price is a download linked to your Microsoft account so you couldn't sell that on.

I will be upgrading next week :)

My reasoning is I can always go back to 7 if 8 has too many bugs and if I waited for MS to iron out the bugs then that might take us past the 31st January and I won't be so inclined if I have to pay more than £25 for it.

Quote:

What if I change my mind? Can I just go back to my old operating system? Not exactly. The version of Windows that you had on your PC before you upgraded won’t be there anymore. To get it back, you'll need to reinstall the previous version of Windows from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC. Typically, this is on a DVD.

Jameseh 26-10-2012 04:54

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

It'd be easier just to install a registry hack to disable metro & re-enable the start menu. Then you still benefit from the general speed improvements.

Yeah, I've got an ISO. When you run the upgrade assistant it asks you how you want to install. You can pick "Install now", "Install from media"(copy it to a disc then install) and there was another option I think.

Yup all my tiles work fine. Some are not compatible with windows narrator but I expected that. They still work but the PC says 'This tile is incompatible with accessibility'

Mods is it time to open a compatibility thread or do we continue with this thread?

ISO mounting . The minute you install something that can mount an ISO you lose the Mount option in explorer so once you are fully installed right click an ISO select properties click change to open with and select windows explorer. Right click then gives you mount back as an option as well as open with for your burning

Windows 8 now installed.

I'll give it a week or so before I decide whether it bugs me or whether it has improved my experience. First impressions are good although I still feel like I am fumbling around a bit.

Best touch so far is that when you start typing in the Start screen it automatically opens up the search.

Only problem I'm having, is I can't get the AMD Catalyst drivers to work properly. The control center won't run :(

uninstall all AMD Cat software and install anew

Mine work fine HD7970

I just got the media centre install code, about 24hrs after I requested it, which is what they say it can take to arrive! May be worth checking your spam folder in webmail, especially if using a virgin based account as it can block proper mails at time :(

I did that yesterday on mine and when I downloaded the installer it wasn't compatible.

Very happy with Windows 8, did an upgrade install, only niggle is if you restart it takes a while to load up in comparison to 7, no such issue if I shut down though

I was under the impression it was way faster starting than any other windows, or maybe a restart is different to a normal start.

I plan on putting my copy on a 128GB SSD seeing you can get them for £50 now.

Thanks for the list, am hoping i won't need to remember shortcuts as i am so used to using the mouse, and i dont plan on buying a touch screen as it seems like hard work. :)

I have it on a normal SATA drive on my laptop but it's way quicker at booting from the SSD on my tablet even when restarting

After a few days of use I can't say Windows has caused me any problems. I've had a few things to learn but it all seems to be hanging together.

One quirk I have noticed is that if you open an application, say Chrome, from the taskbar you get the normal window container, with close and minimize buttons. But if you open the same application from the Start screen you don't get a window container and have to drag the window to the bottom to close the application. This isn't a huge issue but it did confuse me at first.

Here is an article I picked up this morning that goes some way to explain why my laptop is now consuming significantly less power (be warned it's quite technical and a fairly long read)

I noticed that too. Also am I the only one who has problems when loading Chrome from the Start screen? It's fine when I load from the desktop though.

yes all metro apps open full screen

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

re the opening of some apps- eg.Chrome,
the app can open in two ways the normal old way, and the modern ui way(metro)

if I open chrome from the desktop, it has under the tools an option to start chrome in windows 8 mode.

I have changed the shortcut for chrome on the start screen to the desktop version,
so it doesn't open in the new modern ui mode.

Well thanks to some information on how to get this for dirt cheap, I thought I would give it a try and actually it's not to bad.

Gonna give it a month to see how it goes.

Guessing a few of you will have got the "upgrade" from here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/buy

After purchasing, I'm assuming you get emailed your Product ID and you can download an ISO - is that correct?

Jameseh 30-10-2012 22:05

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

You get a download for an 'assistant' that then lets you download it directly or the iso.

Ehh? Assistant? Yes - like the upgrade assistant - then you put your details in / payment and then is launches a download manager you mean which downloads the ISO?
