You can change it. Maybe not by on the defaults, which I agree do seem to have been implemented badly, but you can change it if you want to.

Like I said in my post, "if they don't work for you then fine". However, I suspect that a lot of people are complaining about the way this has been implemented without having given it a go. I was furious when the last update gave us 1 and 4 padding, and went on and on on this forum about how ridiculous this was as a solution. I wish I'd tried it first-works perfectly for me.

There is no way I will set up any recording without the 'Keep until I delete' setting, so that rules out the defaults right from the get go.

I assume you're in a large family then, with a heavily-used, very-full Tivo and don't want your stuff deleting until you've had a chance to watch it.

Which is fair enough :)

In that case you wouldn't have had a problem with "keep until space needed" either. The difference is only relevant when the disc becomes full.

Both my Tivo's are pretty full, but it wouldn't matter how full they were, I would still set a recording to keep until I delete. You get constant feedback of how full the disk is, so when it gets near full, I can go through my recordings and decide which ones are the least important to me and delete those. As far as deletions are concerened, Tivo hasn't a clue as to which ones I would prefer to keep.

People have to remember, its not VM's designs or defaults but that of TiVo a product that VM licensed and are using on their STBs.

Yea they can and have requested many changes and new additional features but am guessing they will never be able to get things added changed that will funamentally change the basic way that TiVo has always functioned.

I have my main series links set to KUID but there are some other less important things like Quantum Leap and other older shows where there are lots and lots of episodes that I have set to KUSN or only keep up to 10 episodes so that I won't run out of space. My 1Tb is sitting at 85% full and my 500Gb is at 90% just now.

Stephen, why wasn't the 'Keep Until' setting allowed to be changed?

There was the chance for the complete customisation of recording defaults and not doing that has messed up a feature that could have been brilliant.

Exactly, I hit the alert warning around 85% utilisation of my 1TB Tivo, trouble is Tivo works out forward scheduled recordings to work out remaining space as if you were going to keep them all which could be up to 2 weeks of recording in the future, while in practice you tend to watch and delete recordings in the main.

Tends to not be a problem then unless running your HDD at near full. I wonder if you do leave the setting at "keep until space needed", Tivo alerts you it has had to delete an existing recording to complete a future recording and whether it deletes watched recordings first before unwatched. never been there! If this happens you can reciver a deleted recording at least but you need to know it has happened!

But would like to control this all myself so to be alerted Tivo cannot record a future programme due to lack of HDD space so I can take action myself.

Apart from reminders. Is there anything else in the update. Menus all in HD for instance? Do we have a full list of changes. I have no interest in reminders so if that's all there is it ain't much of an update for me :(

But the disks are fairly close to full quite often; given the amount of HD I now record, I don't like them above 85%. I prefer to do my own space management; as I said in another post, I know the recordings that are more important to me than the others; Tivo hasn't got a clue about that. You will never convince me to use "keep until space needed".

Same here, although we only have one TiVo. I like to decide what to watch and when.

On another note, just in case I am missing something (don't think I am though). I was really pleased to see the Reminders function on the list of features - yes, I liked it very much on the V+ and I have missed it. Of course, I should have known it would not be as straightforward as that. As I understand it, I cannot use Reminders without recording the programme as well - well, that's just bloody useless. When I record a show, it's for watching it later and I don't need to be reminded. Were I to use a reminder, it would be for watching the show live so that I wouldn't forget, if busy, and if I were late I could rewind to the beginning.

Oh well, maybe there is a technical reason why it can't be done separately.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I just switched on my Tivo and found that it had updated itself overnight.

It also took me less than 30 seconds to discover that I could indeed have my preferred default padding of -1/+1 or even 0/+1 if I wanted.

It is weird that you can't add more than 5 mins padding in total.

Because you still need a tuner for watching whatever it is anyway, why not record it "just in case".

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

But it also demonstrates rather nicely why the reminder function is simply not required at all :)

I did notice when playing about with reminders, that when the message comes up on the screen it gives you the option to cancel the recording! It also gives you all the relevant info so you can simply change the channel. Its not the easiest way of doing it, but you can at least cancel the recording and watch it live too.:-/

Since the hard drive is always almost full, this will either prevent scheduled programmes from recording or I will get a message that a reminder can't be set because the hard drive is full. No lectures about freeing some space, please. :p:

Did he leave the word 'some' out or did he think you could change them all?

Seems like a perfectly understandable to me. Any new recordings will conform to the set defaults unless changed manually.

Where's the problem?

looks like we got the update last night. Just set my defaults and very happy that I can set it back to 'on time'.

The one thing I do wish for is that 'overlap protection' would give the option of dropping padding between shows that clash rather than clipping. I prefer to have padding, as there are a few channels that regularly start up to a minute early and overrun by a minute or two, but i don't want that to cause me to miss the other show's beginning or end.

Overall I've been really happy with TiVo, that's been my only 'bug' since it arrived, and I can live with it, but would prefer not to. Anyone know if that's something they are working on, or is it not possible with the TiVo software?

The problem is that not all the recording defaults can be customised

The statement, given what has happened in reality, should have said (my addition in red):

Quote:

"Global settings – You can now set Some default recording options for new single recordings, Series Links, and WishLists "

Without the word 'some' in the statement, the correct assumption is that all recording options can be specified.

When you click on options when setting a recording, the Keep until date is part of the options, but you can't change it.

Mark Wilkin either thought that all settings could be altered or made a mistake.

I'm sorry Carl, but I'm beginning to think that your blind loyalty to tivo is getting in the way of your reasoning.

In order to switch over the channel at the beginning TiVo needs to reserve the Tuner. In order to reserve the tuner it has to set it to record. If it didn't reserve it to 'record' then another recording could take priority over the 'live channel change'. With V+ it had a dedicated 'live' tuner that was never used for recording so it could just switch the live tuner from one channel to the other.

Hope that made sense.

My prob with Until Space Needed is that things have vanished on me when I've used that. I know the hourglass appears for a day or two and says its going to be deleted but I've lost a few things before I realised what was going on. I know we all have our opinions but that's mine and unless someone can give me a good reason why that default is not there for a free choice by the user, when it used to be there, I'm always going to think it is another silly silly thing.

Hooray.
now have my TIVO update 15-3-RCJ-VMC-2-C00

It allows me to set the recording padding to my default instead of it defaulting to 1 min early and 4 mins after which always had to ammend each to 1 min early and 1 min after.
Nice one Virgin.

Yes, that is the one thing that V+ was better at than Tivo. Because of the way Tivo handles this, and potentially clips shows, I went for zero padding right from the get go with Tivo and have had almost no problems. I sometimes add a bit of padding to the odd show that could have problems, i.e., BBC shows, but I check for the implications with regard to other planned shows first.

Personally, I doubt that V+ style padding will ever be added to Tivo.

Besides missing the option to be able to choose this setting, rendering Express series links useless to me, I find it insulting that someone at VM/Tivo appears to think we have to have the choice taken away from us because we are not capable of manageing it properly.

I can only assume that either your Tivo is nearly always full and/or you have a lot of things set to KUID because my Tivo has auto-never deleted anything since I got it :)

Not too much really. Just that when you now go to the Search and Browse tab, you are given more options -

Exactly, my system works. And also, more importantly, it gives me reassurance that nothing will be deleted unless I do it.

So why do you deny people that way of doing things? After all, that's how people have had to do it on V+ for years so are used to it.

People love options. It appears that VM/Tivo don't trust people with them. Kind of insulting IMHO.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I stand corrected re priorities. Since my TiVo has never deleted anything without me asking it to I've never seen in which order it would decide to do so if it did. Which it hasn't.

Each to their own, however.

Liking the separate od search. Used to be irritating finding search results which weren't due to be on air for a week when sat ready to watch something at that moment. Not sure its really cut out any of the numerous button presses, however??

I can only assume that either your Tivo is nearly always full and/or you have a lot of things set to KUID because my Tivo has auto-never deleted anything since I got it :)

The reasoning has already been given; which is that "until space needed" is the best option to use to allow Tivo to work properly.[COLOR="Silver"]

My TiVo would have also never auto deleted anything since I got it if it was all set to KUID, like it was when I first got it. So thanks for making the point for me. I don't mind it auto deleting her TOWIE or Don't Tell the Bride programmes, but when it starts messing around with my Father Teds, then we have an issue.

If you think that things vanishing on me means TiVo is working properly, then quite simply, you're wrong.

Yes. But the point is that making everything "KUID" does affect any possible future recordings because of way Tivo allocates space.

So yes, you carry on pointlessly setting everything to "KUID" but don't come complaining when it hasn't recorded something because of it.

The only times I've had stuff vanish is with a very full box, over 90% and KUID set for everything

Since switching to 'keep until space required' its always shown me what's going to be deleted and so is under my control to make sure I get my finger out and watch it or delete it if I don't want it any longer

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

@carlwaring I've never complained about that have I.

@anybodyelse Is this really right then. I've got 80% full box, half tb. It's all KUID. I've just series linked all the Football matches on Sky Sports HD and ESPN HD, again all KUID, there's nine matches lined up in My Planned Recordings along with a host of other stuff. All those football matches are way over 20% in my past experience. There's nothing in Recording hiccups to say it won't record because there's no space. There's nothing being deleted, so I'm thinking that as long as there is space when each recording is due, it'll record. And that's what I did all the way through last season.

But the last few pages seem to be suggesting that TiVo won't do this. I'm confused by that. I don't know what to believe as I trust what some people say on here (not you Carl) and it just seems different to my user experience.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I've just spotted a new option for Reminder in the Options on a Series Link or a Set Recording. I think that's new. I like the look of that and I'm going to change that to Yes for a few of the Series Links so if I'm watching TiVo, it'll be good to be told its just about to start.

Why isn't that on the Default Recording Options setting though?

---------- Post added at 00:29 ---------- Previous post was at 00:23 ----------

Correction it's not on the Series Links. It's only available in the My Planned Recordings page as far as I can tell so you have to go back in and put it on individually on each recording if you want it on your series links.

Should have realised that shouldn't I.

Not sure why you're not seeing things not about to record if it really would fill up the last 20%. I have everything KUID and when we went away for 3 weeks I came back to it 95% full and only about a week more of recordings in my planned recordings when it should have been 2 weeks at least. It wouldn't set any further recordings as there wasn't enough space. I had a marathon 2 days of catching up on a lot of the stuff recorded while away (and deleting stuff from before that I knew I wasn't likely to watch - or set to re-record later like movies I knew would come round again) it then set those programmes to record for the next two weeks.

So I can confirm from my own personal experience that what they are saying is correct, that if everything is KUID then if your drive gets full enough it will stop setting upcoming programmes if there isn't enough room to record them.

Since then I do my best to keep it around the 50% mark if I can. I have a few series that I've recorded all the seasons of (in SD) as they were ones I was interested in but never got round to watching. That's the truly awesome thing about TiVo - that it gives me the space to do that.

Now that I've been able to change the padding 0/0 for express recording I will do that, but i'll have to remind myself to pop back in later and set the recording to KUID. I have to do that anyway as hubby never remembers so I'm always saving his recording from being bumped. Aren't I good to him LOL.

A major plus I've discovered (and I think was referenced earlier in the thread) scrolling through alphabetical On Demand is now MUCH faster. used to press channel down and waaaaaaiittttttt. now it's almost (not quite) immediate to the next page. So that's a big plus. Haven't played too much in the other menus.

Overall I think it's a postiive update, just a couple of things that seem a bit odd (like the KUID issue)

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

It's simple really.

For those who wan't Tivo to handle everything, use KUSN. When tivo starts to delete things when it needs more space, it will decide which shows to delete, not you (pressumably, oldest first?). You can always set KUID on an individual basis for really important shows

For those who want to have full choice on what gets deleted when more space is needed, and are prepred to monitor free disc space themselves, then use KUID.

All I'm asking for is the option to choose one of these methods in the recording defauls.

VM/Tivo don't think that enough of it's customers are competent enough to make that choice, so have denied us the option to do it.

andy_m 16-08-2012 07:53

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I think its more that Virgin have provided it's customers with a cutting edge intelligent box and are having a little difficulty understanding that all some people wanted was a bigger hard drive in the v+. I think you're being unfair. Reminders has shown that they're willing to listen to the loud minority and I see no reason to believe that this update was about not trusting it's customers rather than providing them with what it considers to be the best options. If enough people like you make their voices heard then I'm sure you'll get what you want.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Following this update then it seems to me that the Recording 'Options' screen is different depending on where you are in the menus.

For example if you are in the My Planned Recordings menu, the 'Options' screen has full padding choices as before, option to change to KUID, a really handy option to set a reminder for the programme as well.

If you are in the Explore This Show or Series Link menu, the Options screen does not have the Reminder Feature.

And if you are in the Set Defaults menu then there is much more limited padding options, no KUID option and no reminder option.

Why are the Options screens not the same everywhere??

Lovefilm is currently not available on Tivo. VM have said they are potentially talking to Lovefilm (and Netflix) but that is a while ago and nothing has happened yet.

When I turned the TV on in the morning TiVo was on channel 0 which I never leave it on. Usually that only happens after an update. So to confirm it I then went into Help and Settings>system info>system info and third down is software version which should start 15.3 if it's been updated.

I've been done as well, Stevenage in Hertfordshire. Actually happened yesterday morning, but had to do a restart of the box as it froze when changing channel. Can't tell much difference, but then I have only been using TiVo for just under 3 weeks now, and not looked at everything on there yet.

The 15.3 upgrade was done in my part of London last night. I am pleased to see there are some speed improvements as well as the features already mentioned although my TiVo is still slower than my bedroom SA V+. The V+ also scores over TiVo on its implementation of reminders (but nice try TiVo) and its SD up-scaler, IMO. Maybe future TiVo upgrades will address these failings. I hope so.

I absolutely agree, I don't personally have a problem with the current default settings, but I can see that it would be a good thing for all the defaults to be user selectable. For example if you use Word you can change the default font and display colours to anything you want. Most people would agree that 24pt Comic Sans in purple on a green background would be a pretty ridiculous set of defaults, but if that is what someone wants, then who has the right to say that the shouldn't be able to set that?

As for the padding selection, I again find the current default about right, but I do think that the way they implemented the change to be rather bizarre - I mean why should increasing the padding at the end to 5 minutes mean that you can't have any padding before the start? There just doesn't appear to be any logic to it...

On a different note, I have noticed that in the planner you can use the fast forward/rewind buttons to scroll several hour at a time - is that a new feature, or an old feature that I wasn't aware of? Either way I like it :)

No, because

1) the V+HD has a dedicated live tuner for use with reminders, TiVo doesn't.

2) the V+HD code had reminders first, recording functions were added on. TiVo is recording first, and the reminders are added on.

Technically you can, but its all a bit last minute. When the reminder message comes up on screen, it obviously reminds you the program is about to begin. It gives you the option to cancel the recording as well as giving you all the relevant info you need. (Program name, channel and channel number.) So, yes, you can cancel the recording (only a few moments before it starts though) BUT you will have to change the channel manually.

I have only tried it once, but it worked on that occasion for me!

Hope it helps!:)

Got the update today. Only problem for me is that new logo, why is the 'Virgin' logo/text so large compared to the old logo. If they just reduced the size of it back to like on the old logo that would be fine. Just go back to the old logo, even. It was better.

At what stage was this ever mentioned? "Whoareyou" simply asked "So is it possible to set a reminder for a programme without having to record it as well (ie V+)". I told him it was, but it was very last minute and rather long winded.

At no stage was any part of your point mentioned:banghead:

Which would we what? Remind and change channel? Well, it does that, doesn't it? Seeing as it needs a tuner anyway, for you to watch the show, why not have recorded anyway, just in case?

Of course, if you're going to do that then the reminder itself does become a little redundant as you're sat in front of the TV anyway so could just watch the recording as it starts :)

Well if you'd rather not discuss it then that kinda defeats the object of posting on a message/discussion board such as this, doesn't it?

Its very rude that you just ignore the bulk of my post.
I only tend to quote back the bits of a post I want to reply to. If nothing else it makes posts shorter and easier to read.

I hate it when people quote back whole posts then just add "me too" at the bottom. (Okay, an extreme example I know, but you see my point I hope.)

Erm... no. . "Whoareyou" made a very sarcastic remark (hence the "") which I answered in a similar vein.

You really need to work on your English comprehension and/or forum etiquette.

Well I've been 'updated'. Can only tell because TIVO Commander no longer works - apart from that diddly squat difference. Same poor SD picture quality and same crappy iPlayer app. Vm always were better at making things not work than work.

As for reminders - they're pointless if you have TiVo. Waste of time and effort that should have been directed at other things.

Of course it's a subjective point but I am quite happy with the SD PQ. (Except on 5* but that's the broadcaster's fault and not VMs :))

And, again, the iPlayer app is the BBC's and not VMs

So you're 0 for 2 so far. Care to try again ;)

Oh dear not another one who seems self obsessed with moaning about reminders.

OK, I understand the arguement of 'if you've got three recordings planned then the reminder won't work', but surely that would be the case regardless of whether the reminded prog is to be recorded or not. I think an option to just change the channel without recording could have been offered alongside recording.

I spent today at home, and enjoyed the new feature of being able to set various reminders to give me some background company, but then I've just had to waste my precious time deleting all the unwanted recordings - mainly because as the Tivo is approx 85% full and default setting on 'normal' recordings is not keep until I delete the Tivo will delete my older wanted recordings off it's own back before my unwanted reminder recordings. So Tivo is not saving me the one thing I never have enough of - time. How can this situation be a step forward Carl?

Cheers

Just can't see the point when the 'philosophy' of TiVo is to watch what you want when you want - making schedules irrelevant. Each to their own i suppose, I never used them on V+ either... However it's disappointing if providing this gimmick has held up other much needed improvements.

Yawn. I will reply to this one and leave it at that. I will welcome your comments though.

Point 1 LOL. I some what flippantly asked you to prove a statement. You ignored it. So I refer your point back to you. Prove reminders are redundant!!!

Point 2 You completely ignored the fact that I agree with remind and record and tried to imply I did not on two separate occasions. You simply choose to highlight points to incite baiting. (Shame on me for joining in) The second line I simply don't agree with. Do you see what I did there? I acknowledged what you wrote. Try it one day, you might like it.

Point 3 - You are right, I did not look at his smilies properly. And once again, you try the baiting. I am happy with my understand of English, thanks for the advice though. As for etiquette, have a word with whoever designed or allowed the WTF smilie on the site.

I welcome your reply (it's clear you like to have the final word on EVERYTHING), but I am moving on from this.

Mods, if this crosses a line I apologize on advance!

What gives you the impression that other developments have been held up because of the implementation of remimders Mr K?.:)

:shrug::disturbd:

Vm have to take some responsibility for their box and stop blaming others. We do pay then after all, so they are accountable for their 'sub-contractors'. If they had any 'balls' they'd insist on using the VM servers for catch up (as with V+) until iPlayer is fit for purpose.

Because this upgrade has delivered ***all, apart from breaking TiVo Commander and iPad app.

Perhaps some patience is needed from some on here because seems to think that things happen overnight but in reality they take a bit longer then that but their patience will be rewarded in the end.:)

Sorry Carl in the early days of the Virgin TiVo, with your S1 knowledge you seemed to have an "if I can help attitude". However since your opinion on reminders was roundly ignored all you do is snipe.

People like your knowledge and help but I can't understand why you post using neither.
