re: R36 Firmware Beta Test (was R35)

They made a general release of the one with the streaming bug despite being told about it by a number of people in the testing forum. That was because they felt they had to shut down telnet and ssh access and didn't care about the consequences. I thought this latest fiasco suggested they may have at least learned some lessons although as Chrysalis said they could have published the known bugs alongside the test release.

why didn't they just send out a firmware updating telnet, shh, the security flaws and then got their heads down working on the other bugs. you'd of thought things would get jumped on ASAP, its its 1 by 1 so be it. at least with babysteps you don't run the risk of a proper buggy overhaul plus longing the whole process out leaving said security flaws or whatever in place.

could someone please explain the firmware. not whats in it but who codes/builds it? is each firmware costing them or it is part of the deal for the SH with Netgear? is the deal so crappy that 1 lone monkey is working on it or is a team supporting the Netgear SuperHub? Whats VMs take on it, position? this is too shoddy to be true, somethings not right here.

re: R36 Firmware Beta Test (was R35)

Virgin go through NetGear, who then go through whoever else who's hardware (such as wireless card etc, modem) which makes up the unit, to hazard a guess. Whoever puts the firmware together, i don't know, perhaps netgear themselves.

I would not have a netgear router even if you paid me to use it. I have still got modem mode selected on my shub and therefor its working great.

I think it depends on price,, what ya pay for is what you get, I've got their business grade products which usually cost upwards of £150 each mostly and it's pretty reliable and good quality kit, especially their wireless access points which are wall mounted and the smart switches.. All have lifetime prosafe warranties

People here are quick to assume netgear is completely at fault here,

But it could be entirely possible the original netgear base firmware in fact didn't have many bugs and was tested properly... But that it is vm stripping bits out, adding bits in, tweaking it here and there to suit their requirements that has made it unstable in some ways.. Ok the wireless range isn't great, and it's a cheap bit of hardware... But again it was not cha choice of vanity that brought about the shape... Netgears stock product looks completely different.. And without an original to compare aide by side, it could well be vm grinding down the price which has also led to cheaper components being used, and rubbish cheapie internal aerials etc

The stock firmware on my wndr3700 seemed to be pretty decent although I didn't spend much time with it before flashing dd-wrt. The hardware is definitely great though.

This whole firmware fiasco might be down to something as simple as instructions lost in translation between VM who speak no Chinese and a Chinese coder in a backroom somewhere relying on Google translations. :D

I still remember that fiasco.

I remember posting on here saying youtube etc. hosed on the trial and VM would be in a real mess if they released the firmware, then 2 days later they did and all hell broke loose. Crazy stuff.

I was on the trial for the hub and told them it continuously reboots and said I couldn't continue the trial. It got released anyway, crazy indeed

They have 4 weeks to make a proper improvement. Mr CEO bloke is going to be receiving a call thereafter. If we don't have acceptable wireless range (is 15 feet an unreasonable distance to ask for? Irrespective of the orientation of the Superhub). Not impressed.

have VM had this firmware sitting around for the past 2 years?

2010 Virgin Media. All rights reserved. it says at the bottom...
wonder if this was the firmware that "should" of been on the superhub from day 1, but due to VM rushing it out, they just tweaked the netgear interface as a quick fix until this was ready.. hmm

i can confirm, that the provisioning details are still available.

As mentioned previously its under router status.. but you need to be logged out to get to it.

I see, it only appears before you log in. It certainly is an improvement.

I always thought it was odd that the Superhub had no way for an installer to check how things were running without logging in.

just got it too and also noticed they have removed the ability to see the provisioned speed, that is not a very good move at all to be honest. either it's on purpose or an accidental oversight. but I think the former is more likely.

I quite like the new UI but it will take a little getting used to.

i like the interface. its a bit too heavy for my phone but on an actual PC/Laptop it looks very nice.

Firewall protection.. low/medium/high ?

wireless rate/mode.. upto 300 - Enable OBSS ?

I turned of the firewall, set the channel to 1 not auto.

Up to 144Mbps so OBSS is not an option - this was by default.

I do wonder what are the best settings.

Firewall off.

2.4

Up to 300

channel 13 (I do wish all the home hubs around me would stop joining me on my nice free channel!)

changing firewall settings on mine made no difference.

turned it off, and now have it on high

speed is consistent :)

sadly though i can only get that speed at off peak times, lol it went downhill.. they added 2 new channels which was fine for a while.. and now its back to not so good :(

jitter for me also seems the same

Firewall set to anything above low will block MSN Messenger

Can confirm that, lol Windows Live messenger signs in ok, but no contacts load up when set above low.

Under Device Connection Status all my devices show as wired, but most are wireless (iPhones etc).

Trying to add a screen grab.............

I can't go to the advanced settings page...

Nothing happens when I click on the "Advanced settings button"

EDIT: Found it..

From another forum "right av just put mine into modem mode and can confirm you can get all the details advanced setting etc after you go to 192.168.100.1 top right it says Router status click that"
