Re: BBC Red Button - will it arrive before the Olympics?

VM did get their PR right though as they announced the Tivo app in advance of any pay tv provider offering anything on Olympics other than the free access available to all.

It is really unfair on VM that people are reacting just because of what Sky did. Lets not forget that VM have the capability to remove the need for any of its customer to need to record anything Olympics related. They can add all of the content to their STBs for viewing at own leisure.

When VM have a different technology available it beats me why people want to follow Sky.

Given that they're doing nothing until they have something to announce, I don't see a problem. If they announced something as "coming soon", would that please you any better?

When was this survey done and what were the full results? (Link to source please.)

Just because I don't agree with you, and others, does not mean that I "have Rose coloured glasses".

And I think it is you and the other serial moaners who should "join the real world" and realise that things can, and do, go wrong.

So announced dates get pushed back; and things that people say will happen by a certain date just might not.

But that does not mean that they won't happen or that there was any intent to deceive when the original announcement was made.

And that VM will announce any Olympics-related stuff when they're good and ready to and not on anyone else's agenda.

Sky have anounced full coverage that will please all their subscribers right off the bat from the BBC anouncement. It is inept of VM to leave their customers wondering if they will get the same full coverage, particularly non Tivo customers, who at this point in time will only get a small amount of extra coverage. And Tivo customers, as it stands, won't be able to record events whilst they are at work.

How can that be anything other than really bad public relations?

They got it right when they announced that. But that was then; this is now. The game has now been changed by Sky and VM need to keep up. They can't live on past stratergies when the game has taken on a new direction.

TBH this seems like frustration of other areas of VM and not specifically the Olympics?

Because it took Sky 3 months after VM's announcement to make theirs. Until this point
the coverage on VM was superior.

I do NOT care what Sky does ,has, or wont let Virgin show.

I want a box that offers the full range of services that the BBC offer.

I also would like that box to have at least the services that were on the older model. which it is being hyped as the great replacement of.

I also do not want to be fobbed off with either "its come soon" ," its not our fault", or wait & see.
Its that really to MUCH to ask.

No it's not that simple. VM offer many things that Sky can't hold a candle to at the moment. But Sky offer superior TV and their phone service is better value. What makes that a simple choice?

Just because a person thinks that overall VM offers a better service than Sky and chooses them over Sky, doesn't mean that person shouldn't critisize things that VM should improove on. Afterall, someone from VM may start to listen if enough people complain. In fact to not complain about things that they think VM are doing wrong would make them a VM fanboy, and that would be wrong.

Well, if the TV and phone are that important to you (and I mean more important than stuff that you think VM do well) then you go with Sky. It really is that simple.

Absolutely. Constructive criticism is always good. Not seeing much of that on here thus far though.

The constructive bit is where it's been suggested that VM get the 24 SD and 24 HD linear olympic channels. Did you miss that bit?

multiskilled 05-04-2012 19:49

Re: BBC Red Button - will it arrive before the Olympics?

Ah,so what you want is the best of both worlds. That is never going to happen unless you subscribe to both services and the costs that would involve. It's like buying any product (car, phone, insurance, etc) you have to choose which features are more important to you and decide.

Every one knows the situation between Sky and Virgin, if you want linear content go to Sky if you want on demand and fast broadband go to Virgin. It is as simple as that.

Lex you make a very fair point. Until recently I was happy with Virgin's Olympic offering as it was the best I could get and I ordered a Tivo.

Now that I know that it is possible to receive these streams in a recordable form it is my main entertainment priority to receive them, especially as the sports I am most interested in are likely to get poor coverage on the main channels and life means I can't be at home all the time watching an unrecordable stream.

What I would like to see now is openness from Virgin on how they will broadcast this massive national event. Virgin generally keep the new channel discussions close to their chest for commercial reasons. This, however, is a different situation as the BBC is a public broadcaster whose output is paid for by the licence fee.

I am prepared to by patient for a while but I need to know where I stand a fair bit before the Olympics. I pay Virgin over £1,000 a year and am a long term customer because for me Virgin offered the best overall package and I can't justify the expense of splitting providers.

The Olympics for me are a priority and I am soon going to have to find a way of receiving the recordable streams. Clearly the happiest solution would be if Virgin provide the streams as per Freesat and Sky. If, for whatever reason, they decide not to I am going to have to cut back on something, compromise, research the most economic solution and source a supplier in what could be a busy time.

So more than anything I need to know where I stand as soon as possible. I hope you understand my position.

I am actually a very big supporter of VM. VM are in competition with Sky for customers.

This is why I get frustrated with VM when their slowlnes in doing things damages their chance of customers choosing VM over Sky. Or even loses customers to Sky.

Sky Rule the roost on TV channels; that's a given, and it does frustrate many loyal VM customers, but they put up with it as part of the trade off for other aspects of VM that are better than Sky. But having second class TV channels is probably their major gripe (read these forums). So, when Sky announce they will be adding linear Olympic channels and VM don't make the same announcment, given a history of Sky getting a new channel and VM not getting it, people are concerened. For this reason, VM need to clear the air on this ASAP and it is why I am so vocal about it. Yes, the Olympics are a few months away, but the battle for the platform the viewers will watch it on is now.

VM seem blind to the fact that Sky will be offering fibre broadband very very soon and fast broadband is the only thing, for many customers, that has kept them with VM even though they are attracted to Sky's better TV offering. This is another reason why VM need to announce linear Olympic channels and do it now.

BTW Do you work for VM?

Fantastic post. My thoughts and feelings exactly. I'm pretty sure many Virgin TV customers without TiVo want some assurances at the moment too.

No I don't work for VM. Since last month I was no longer a VM customer either.

I don't see my posts as being overly defensive. I just don't see the need for this level of criticism of VM before they have said one way or the other how they will cover the Olympics.

To be honest reading through the postings from VM actual customers, the main criticism seems to be that virgin media have said very little about how they will cover the olympics and its april now so not much time left, the main problem with VM is how they interact with customers which for a communications company is very poor to say the least, and is their main let down as far as i am concerned.

Happy now? ;)

Have you looked at the announcement ?

V+ =Red button services - Which I think every one is happy with ( Well Perhaps not all )
TiVo = advanced red button services ( If thats what I think it is i.e as of today on TiVo) not good

Either way I won`t be using them Just hope you guys get the service you want & deserve

What's the difference between 'Advanced' & 'Standard' on the red button service? In my life so far, everything that says 'Advanced' on the tin, normally provides an improvement over standard?

Nice coincedance between this announcement today falling on the '100 days to go' marker. I voted 'Yes' in the poll.
