I am lucky, as I have the VM hub a couple of feet away from the TiVo - another option is to use PowerLine connectors.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I had thought that VM may offer powerline adapters to extend the range of the network to the TiVo.

I have a couple of them and thats how my TiVo in the living room is connected. Bedroom TiVo is right next to the router so there was no issue there.

Likewise, as I also have my 3D Bluray player, NAS Drive and Desktop all connected to it.

Wireless router upstairs used as a bridge to connect to the Superhub which streams from the NAS (and hopefully the TiVo shortly!)

Homeplugs are brilliant and user friendly I have my Sky+HD multiroom connected up with them and Anytime+ works a treat and so will the shared planner when launched. I use these

They should have thought about that really before not asking Cisco to include Wi-fi in the Tivo boxes. Its not like Wi-fi chips cost a lot of money.

Totally new to Homeplugs but want to connect Tivo and my 3D BluRay player. Will I need 4 homeplugs to get connected?

I believe you can use one of these below assuming your TIVO and Blu Ray are connected to the same TV you basically plug one homeplug in an electric socket near your router with an Ethernet into your router then the other plug near your TIVO with Ethernet from homeplug to your TIVO
this will allow you to connect more than one device however someone maybe able to verify 100%

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Last week both my TiVos were playing up, No network connection on one and a totally black screen (not even a menu) on the other. Resets didnt give me any joy so I called faults.
They were really helpfull, got an almost working Tivo on my black screen but had no access to Ondemand etc. Line two got involved, who ever they are, and within 2 days all gone back to normal.

Odd times pictures would load on the discovery bar and could get apps on and off too. At one point tivo was flicking from My Shows to Home by itself for 30 secs or so. And all the time the green connection light remained on.

Also had this happen on one box...
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/03/68.jpg

Anyways, all fixed now. Just found it interesting.

Go for a make which provides more options , one plug with a single ethernet port to connect to your router, and the other plug with multiple ethernet ports to connect your TIVO and Bluray player

I have these

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

A bit late, but can verify muppetman11's advice to use a switch. It's what I use with my Solwise homeplugs. I use a cheap Edimax one, but any cheap switch should do. Have my Media Player and Freesat recorder connected to it with no problems.

Also make sure you get a Piggyback Homeplug (for mains pass-through) if you need one. Putting a Homeplug on a mains adaptor with other plugged in devices, is not recommended.

heavyside 13-03-2012 09:32

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

My experience with homeplugs is that they work well if the two devices to be linked are physically on the same circuit. When I had my VM broadband installed I initially tried to link my superhub and my various computers this way but as the router and the computers were not on the same circuit within my home the results were disappointing and I found I was only getting about half the speed I expected. So I took the plunge and had cat 5 cables run and now I'm getting full speed delivered to my computers. I only found out about the need to have both homeplugs on the same circuit later via various homeplg forums. They'll work on separate circuits within the home, but at reduced efficiency.

Options for the suggestions would be good, so you can add extra time onto the recordings. If shows are running slightly late.

Agreed. VM are going to need all the advantages they can muster when Sky launch fibre, and multiroom straming could be one of them, if they get their finger out.

I know they're trying to come up with a simple network connection method so that anyone can have it, but why not let those of us who know how to hook up the Tivo to a network have it now. And if they use carriage rights as an excuse, surely they've been planning this from the early planning stages of the Tivo, which ought to be long enough?

Don't Suggestions get the default padding; ie -1/+4. (I don't know as I don't have them enabled.) No good for really late over-runs mind, of course, so the idea's fair enough.

Suggestions used to have 10 mins buffer, but now they are 1- and 4+ mins

I think both companies may get the product to market by late this year , however that's just my opinion.

Do you have to enable buffer on suggestions because mine don't seem to have any buffer. Most of the time the end is missing on my suggestions and the length of the recording is the actual length of the program.

Sky have 3 boxes a SkyHD box (non PVR) with Ethernet port , Sky+HD with Ethernet and a Sky+HD 1TB with Ethernet. Sky also sell their own wireless connector if you wish to go down that route https://accessories.sky.com/
All I've heard in the forums is that it's meant to be in testing and staff on DS have called it the shared planner , I think I've seen it mentioned that you can watch a show in one room then pause and carry on from that point in another room however it is all speculation. TIVO already have a similar feature available on their boxes in the US don't they.

My preferred option would be a virgin branded ethernet - Wifi adapter, somthing like this http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/5454...universal.html.
Have the feeling that the electrics in my house (being installed in the 1900's and bodged by previous owners recently certifed however) would downgrade the connectivity to 2400 Baud.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I had TIVO installed yesterday:-

1) MUCH quicker channel change than V+
2) MUCH quicker getting into menus and finding/playing Catch Up or On Demand
3) MUCH quicker on Sky red button (love it that it also tells you when red button features will happen too)
4) MUCH slicker presentation of red button facilities.
5) Despite what some have said SD channels are just as good (or as bad lol) as they ever were BUT if anything the HD channels are a bit more HD-eyer than on the V+ box.

Only a couple of downsides. No reminder features - but I know that's coming (does anyone know when it's likely to appear???)

Bit weird not having the channel number displayed on the box...but that's a minor minor thing.

Slightly annoying the recording buffers have to be set up for each individual recording and not across the board in one go or am I missing something????

Maybe bcos I'm not used to it yet but there seems to be a lot of steps to get into watch/delete/set up recording than there was on the V+ BUT I'm guessing that's because you can do more.

All in all I like it. Impressed with the speed especially.

.

Express series link adds an automatic 1 min before and 4 mins after padding value. I think pressing record does the same (never use these myself; always go into 'explore this show' to delete padding and change other settings)

When highlighting a recording in My Shows you can just press play to watch it without having to go into the next menu, saves a button press :)

Also to quickly delete a show press Clear (Bottom left next to '0' on the remote), also when the show is highlighted.

Hope that helps

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

OK so i have an HDD recorder connected by scart which used to work happily with my V+ box. The only issue i ever had was that sometimes i used to get funny lines down the picture, especially when there was a lot or red or green on the screen. I fixed it by going into the V+ menus and switching from COMPOSITE to RGB as a picture output. Problem fixed, lines gone!!!

HOWEVER, I've connected HDD back up since i've had TIVO fitted and the lines are there BUT I can't see WHERE I can flip the switch from Composite to RGB...

HELP!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply. Is there anyway around this, tech people. As a tennis fan i sometimes want to record and keep matches and i record them on my HDD recorder and then burn them onto DVD. If there is no way to fix this then I can't do this with TIVO and I'll be going back to V+.

I've had a google and it suggests that SCART on TIVO never used to be RGB enabled but a software drop enabled it??!?!?!?!

Well I just double-checked it for you and it's nothing special, really.

The Tivo is SCART'd to the AUX input
The TV is SCART'd to the TV output

And I have it set to "YUV P-Scan" rather than "RGB" because, for some unknown reason, RGB has a heavy blue tinge to it on my new Panasonic E30B.

It probably doesn't make a difference, but it's worth considering. I haven't checked the Samsung output recently.

Make sure your SCART leads are plugged in properly. Try a different lead if you can.

I saw it yesterday, but it's not there today. It might depend on when your box last called back.

To be fair it's a pretty unobtrusive way of advertising , and pretty slick. VM are a business and as such need to explore every avenue of generating income.

I doubt it somehow... I don't mind the odd advert as it keeps the charges down. nobody is forced to watch them :)

So is that the original YouTube app or the newer auto-playing YouTube app?

The apps need to improve and I'm sure they will however the functionality and speed of the box is excellent considering the amount of graphics and data it's handling , my parents box has only needed a reboot once since install and that was after an update so they seem to have sorted most of the stability issues.

I thinks they have that figured. Look at Muppet Christmas Carol and they have kids, well frogs and pigs anyway. Marvels of the animal kingdom keeping the genes separate like that.

Nothing. It's because he isn't mentioned anywhere in the listings for The Voice :)

Also, I wouldn't use the "Sir" as he will very rarely be listed with that title.

I think the best way to set up a wishlist for a person is to "search" for them in the database first and then use the 'Create Wishlist' from the "More Info" option.
