I'm just downloading Ice Cream Sandwich via the update on my phone and NOT via Kies. For some reason, automatic update didn't alert me so I am doing it manually.

Package is 223.46mb,should take around 20 minutes via Wi-Fi

---------- Post added at 20:19 ---------- Previous post was at 20:04 ----------

Then after the download....another 20 minutes installing.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

Ice Cream Sandwich looking good but it really drains the battery compared to Gingerbread. So it can be downloaded via the handset after all. Some have said that it is only available via Kies but it isnt true.

I did my update via ODIN, a LOT easier

Instructions on how to do it are here http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-pho...y-s2-50006766/

and firmware file you need is here http://www.hotfile.com/dl/153177481/...5_XEU.zip.html

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

After a week now I'm still undecided. In some ways it's sharper, snappier, than gingerbread. The face unlock is a gimmick, but things like data usage monitor is excellent. I've noticed an improvement in battery life as well which I wasn't expecting because I'd heard the improvement was only minimal, so I think all in all it's an improvement and it's been well implemented in terms of an updated touch wiz. However, I am finding that some apps have become quite unstable, and since I was quite happy with the last version of touch wiz, I'm still unsure it's worth bothering with.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

I agree about the apps Andy. Some apps are really poor since ICS has been installed. The Yahoo Mail app is a noteable one. I am running version 1.4.0 which seems to be the latest. It is slow, it has stopped updating emails as they come in - I have to manually check now - and what is with the ads on it?

Overall I am pleased with ICS but some of the applications need to be updated to make them run more smoothly with the new OS.

BenMcr 24-04-2012 23:38

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

Some of issues are down to the apps not being ICS compatible. For instance the released version of Spotify keeps on crashing and/or not playing the next available track

The beta release is a lot more stable, as it 'fully supports ICS'.

Same for the VM TV Guide App, it needed to add ICS support in to work

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

ICS has worked fine up to now, the only problem I've had is with Launcher Pro crashing. I use GO Launcher with the Clee 2 theme instead, it looks great and is fast and smooth.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

I love the fact that boot up and shut down time is far quicker and when closing down there is the option to restart which wasn't on Gingerbread.

The folders are useful too so I now put my apps in catergories News,Shopping,Weather,Radio apps etc which makes everything more tidy.

Perhaps you could take it to your local Virgin Media store? Our local store have helped my wife out when she has had problems with her Blackberry.

I followed this method a few weeks ago but the file was a bit buggy and kept crashing.

Got bored at the weekend so just rooted it and applied CyanogenMod 9. It's still an alpha build but it is better than the official build in terms of speed and stability. Also it based on Android 4.0.4

I can't sync or stream on 3g or wi-fi on Spotify because it keeps closing down. Is it possible to roll it back to Gingerbread untill Spotify release the update?

No need, the new app is available for download already as a preview. Been using for a while and it's really good.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/25407...r_preview.html

Link is at the bottom of the article.

Or lazy direct link here to get the apk from the spotify site.

Just had another software update much to my surprise. No idea yet what is better about it but I hope my battery will now last longer. Maybe this will be the final update before they start to roll out Jelly Bean towards the end of the year?

I am now on Android 4.0.4

My battery life was terrible over the weekend, only last about 4-5hrs after full charge, this is with the latest update, I hardly use the phone during the day

I just got a s2 from VM for £17 a month which isn't too bad.

My one came with 4.0.3 on it and I updated it when it arrived yesterday. So far the only thing I find odd is you need to take the battery out to change the memory card. Still I guess the designers though you'd not need to get at it that often.

Ordered a 32gb card but irritatingly it hasn't shown up from amazon today despite paying for next day delivery.

Oh and it came with a micro sim card adapter which was useful as I'd been using my sim in an an iPhone 4.

.

Yay for idiotic design.

The OS supports changing memory card without a reboot, but they made it physically impossible to do

The OS does *not* support changing the SIM card without a reboot, but they made it easily possible to do.

Thankfully they've reversed said idiotic design on the S3...

How did you get the S2 for £17 a month, even on the starter tariff for VM customers already comes out at £28 according to the website.

https://www.virginmobile.com/vm/view...ringId=7493769

I was looking to upgrade to VM moblie but even with the customer deals they could not compete with three, who i stuck with the one plan offers 2,000 anytime minutes,5,000 texts, umlimited internet with tethering allowed.

As far as i could see a deal like that with VM would be around £33,where i got the one plan with three for £25 a month.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

I just called to cancel and that's what they offered me.

...and I am no longer a VM customer (aside from mobile).

If thats what they were advertising for new customers(already with cable services) i would be heading their way now!

How many minutes, texts and internet did that plan include each month.

Sounds like a cracking deal with the right allowances.

Well after reading your other posts it's not really comparable.

I get 200 mins 3000 texts and 1gb internet. Which is far more than I need.

That probably explains the deal then, still if thats all you need its certainly not bad.:)
