Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Oh well, got tired of waiting so I've just joined SKY. Get my mini-dish this Friday in time for Cleverly Vs. Bellew.
I'm in no doubt the channel will come to Virgin however now I can finally get access to Premier Sports and SKY Atlantic for the wife. If it turns out to be a bad move, I can always return to Virgin in 12 months time. I decided against getting ESPN as I never watch English football and my team Rangers only feature about once a month. I'll use the money instead to subscribe to BoxNation when it goes subscription. |

but VM are a joke, clearly got no interest in doing the best for their customers. the channel is free, i can't understand why there is any delay in adding it, as no one will be billed so no paperwork or hassle. |

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Can you believe this?
http://www.frankwarren.tv/index.php/...levisions.html This weekends BoxNation broadcast is also going to be on Freeview HD! Virgin seriously need to get their fingers out! How on Earth a deal, even an interim deal to carry this weekends fight on virgin didn't happen is a scandal to all Virgin boxing fans who pay a monthly subscription. FREE on SKY, FREE on Freeview, FREE on the internet and nowhere to be seen on Virgin. |

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
For anyone who wants to watch the fight tomorrow online, here's a copy of an e-mail I received from BoxNation which contains a link to the official stream. I've heard the picture and sound quality will be top notch!
"Watch LIVE & ONLINE this weekend for FREE by visiting http://boxnation.tv/live.php Our line up this weekend includes Nathan Cleverly v Tony Bellow for the WBO Light – Heavyweight Championship on Saturday from 18:00 (UK Time). BoxNation is home to the most knowledgeable and engaging team in boxing including presenters Jim Rosenthal and Paul Dempsey, pundit Steve Bunce and commentator John Rawling. Tune in to Sky channel 456 to catch all the action. The BoxNation team" Please note whilst the e-mail suggests the action starts from 6pm, I have been reliably informed the broadcast will be from 7pm. I do not know if this link will also cover Bernard Hopkins Vs. Chad Dawson at 2am Sunday morning. I'll keep you posted if I get further info. |

Anyway I called Virgin to cancel, and thought I'd give retentions a try. I explined I wanted to leave and had already joined SKY. I offered to e-mail proof to show I wasn't just being a chancer. I said it wasn't too late for me to change my mind and gave plenty of BS about wanting to stay loyal etc...I was offered a 500Gb TiVo, at no extra cost, and my V+box would be moved to my bedroom at no extra cost. All in my monthly subscription wouldn't be changing. I also raised the point about the expense of 0845 calls and was also offered some deal, that usually costs £2.00, for free too. Finally if I stayed this would all be on a 12 month contract, not 18. I then started to think about some of the stuff I would lose joining SKY: 1. 50Mb broadband 2. On demand content - Including SKY Anytime 3. Catch up TV 4. ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Classic, ESPN America. 5. The ability to watch a channel whilst recording 2 others 6. The ability to watch VOD content on both my livingroom box and bedroom box. I spoke with the Mrs. last night and we discussed why we want SKY: 1. More HD channel 2. BoxNation 3. SKY Atlantic 4. New channels as they launch It was a difficult decision but I have cancelled my order with SKY last night. They refunded my £10.00 today. I've just bin-ed the 2 viewing cards they sent me and I need to return their router. I have taken the retention offer from Virgin. I'm about to join the TiVo party. Ultimately I really want Box Nation, and did join SKY, however with the arrival of SKY Anytime on Virgin, and the thought of having to use broadband bandwidth to watch the same stuff via SKY I realised it wasn't a deal that made sense for me. I'd be giving up way too much stuff to join SKY. For now I'll need to watch Box Nation via stream. Alternatively I also hooked up the old SKY box at my parents house and the channel is working fine. They only live 4 doors away so I can either watch the action live with my Dad or record if to watch the next day. As for the Mrs. wanting SKY Atlantic, well let's just say I've obtained Boardwalk Empire, Game Of thrones and Blue Bloods for her today whilst off work. I've just been reading this post back and the following line at the start has just made me chuckle: "There is a long story to this, but the short version is no." Imagine if I'd posted the long version:D |

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Well since Box Nation launched I've cooled my interest in Premier Sports. The Mrs. would like SKY Atlantic however we will use other methods to keep on top of the latest shows, even if that means DVD boxsets for Xmas.
A little birdy has told me that BoxNation should launch on Virgin in January. The free to view period ends in December however SKY customers who currently register their interest will get their first month free meaning that on SKY the channel is essentially free until about 21st January 2012. BoxNation executives will be presenting viewing figures for this weekends Cleverly Vs. Bellew broadcast to Virgin so hopefully our friends at SKY will tune in to help us out. Alternatively the more people who watch the official stream the better. My source, aka little birdy, is not very reliable however he tells me the things I like hearing :D |
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Glad you staying Chad, I was in a very similar position and think i might be hanging on too.
I just hope online it all goes ok tonight, really hope they prepared for big numbers and site doesn't crash on us. Fingers crossed for one and all. On Freeview - this mean Box Nation now being picked up the basic boxes? I didn't know it was on there. Either way, Box Nation going to be great - great team of presenters and amazing fights. |

No, I'm using my Freeview HD TV (a Samsung UE40D6530) on channel 112. Just out of curiosity because it's the first time an internet-based Freeview channel has been available, as far as I'm aware. The TV plays YouTube and iPlayer videos very well, including HD, so it's not a connectivity or bandwidth problem.

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Well that's the second live British broadcast from Box Nation, Appleby Vs. Walsh being the first, and yet again we have been delivered with a British fight of the year contender.... well it'll be in the top 5 anyway.
I have to say that I'm disgusted that this fight, and Box Nation isn't on Virgin yet. I don't care who's to blame, just get it sorted. Boxing is not a niche sport and this is not a niche channel. Here's some viewing figures to give you an idea of where boxing actually stands in the world of televised sport. BOXING Tyson Fury Vs. Dereck Chisora - Channel 5 2011 - 3,000,000 viewers Amir Khan Vs. David Bailey - ITV 2005 - 6,300,000 viewers Danny Williams Vs. Audley Harrison - ITV 2008 - 8,000,000 viewers OTHER SPORT Andy Murray Vs. Ivan Ljubicic Wimbledon - BBC 2011 - 8,800,000 viewers Man City Vs. Stoke FA Cup Final - ITV 2011 - 8,100,000 viewers Barcelona Vs. Manchester United Champions League Final - ITV 2011 - 11,100,000 viewers England Vs. Wales 6 Nations - BBC 2011 - 8,200,000 viewers Formula 1 (Average figures for whole season) - BBC 2011 - 5,800,000 Now you'll see that boxing fairs reasonably well however please remember the viewing figures I've provided aren't for major fights. They are domestic level only. Imagine what Cleverly Vs. Bellew would have attracted on ITV Saturday Night primetime if promoted properly. Virgin have 4,000,000 TV customers. Here's a little fact for you, the average UK household has 2.5 occupants which means Virgin TV services actually reach roughly, very roughly, 10,000,000 people. That's 10,000,000 people being denied the opportunity to watch Box Nation. Sure in reality 10,000,000 wouldn't have watched the action, but we'll never know until the channel arrives. So whatever the problem is between Virgin and BoxNation please resolve it ASAP. British sports fans are being deprived of one of the most popular sports on TV. I'll tell you what, there would be murder if this was another sport. Remember the disgust and outrage when that online streaming company purchased the rights to Ukraine Vs. England? When people realised the game wouldn't be on SKY, or terrestrial TV, they went mental. The story actually made the news and the front page of some newspapers. The Box Nation situation with Virgin to me is the same as Ukraine Vs. England. ---------- Post added at 00:57 ---------- Previous post was at 00:49 ---------- For anyone that's still awake, it looks like Bernard Hopkins Vs. Chad Dawson will be streamed at BoxNation too: http://boxnation.tv/live.php I think the show starts at 1am however the main event won't be on until about 3:30am. |
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?

So I'm sorry Chad, as I love boxing, it is a minority sport. Much that I would like Virgin to carry it, as long as it was free;) Regards John |
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Quote:
Remember this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PremPlus At one stage less than 30,000 SKY customers had Prem Plus. Does that make football a minority sport? In fact unless it's a big fixture like Liverpool Vs. Manchester United, Premiership games on SKY struggle to break 1,000,000 viewers. This is a sport that SKY spend billions on. http://www.barb.co.uk/report/weekly-...mmes-overview? Ricky Hatton Vs. Floyd Mayweather still holds the record for PPV in the UK at 1.2 million sales. What other sport, being broadcast live between 2am to 5am in the morning, would ever attract 1.2 million sales on a PPV basis? As posted above, SKY struggle to get this amount of viewers on some of their Monday Night and Super Sunday fixtures. I don't agree with you John, boxing is far from a minority sport. What sports do you have ahead of boxing and what sports do you have on a par with boxing? Also think would any of those sports ever attract any real PPV audience? |
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
I fear this channel may be very low down the priority list , however that's just my opinion , it would make a nice addition if added though.
|
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
I think well promoted free to air fights have more of an "event" feel about them which artificially bumps the audience figures. People can dip in and out of formula one, for example, which I assume suffers the time shift factor for some of the races in Asia etc. Also, the football matches you mentioned were both televised simultaneously on pay tv stations, and so the actual viewing figures are probably greater than those you've posted. Wimbledon is part of British tradition-no broadcaster puts the same sort of effort into the other majors.
I agree that boxing is no "minority" sport, especially compared with tennis, but I don't think it has the majority appeal, especially over a period of time-like a season of motor racing or football, that will ever see it considered as anything other than "niche" by virgin. |
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
no dissrespect but i hope your wrong , did anyone see the b-hop fight , what happened ?
|
Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?
Quote:
Cinemoi - £6.99 a month Disney Cinemagic - £5.00 a month Baby TV - £3.50 a month Manchester United TV - £6.00 a month Playboy TV - £11.00 a month The Adult Channel - £11.00 a month Television X - £11.00 a month If Virgin feel Box Nation is more niche than any of the above channels then I'll be both shocked and disappointed. The day that Virgin give priority to a French movie channel, or children's channel aimed at 0-3 year olds, ahead of a Box Nation is the day we all need to ask what is going on in their heads. Just my opinion really but just how popular is MUTV outwith Man United fans? BARB shows MUTV gets 33,000 viewers per day, the majority of which will undoubtedly have SKY. I'm guessing about 10,000 people subscribe to MUTV via Virgin. |

Re: BoxNation on Virgin Media?

I suppose the problem with Premier Sports is whilst it carries plenty of sports, it doesn't really have too many crown jewels. They admit themselves on their website "Premier Sports was formed in 2010 to primarily facilitate the broadcasting of sports events that have been ignored by other broadcasters but have a very strong core following. Currently we focus on Blue Square Conference Football.....". Premier Sports announced on Facebook in April 2011 that the company had failed to attract enough viewers to its Conference football broadcasts to share any revenue with the clubs beyond the £5,000 broadcast fee paid to home clubs and £1,000 to away clubs. "It is a shame the number did not reach the point where revenue sharing became an option," said a Premier Sports spokesperson on its Facebook discussion board. So are Premier Sports just deluding themselves? The Blue Square deal was one of their first however clearly they over estimated how much of strong core following the competition has. There is a reason why other broadcasters are ignoring these competitions, they just aren't mainstream enough. If they aren't already on SKY Sports, ESPN, ESPN America, Eurosport, BBC, ITV and Channel 5 there will be a pretty good reason. Blue Square Conference, Swedish Speedway, Cage Warriors, Brisca F1, NRL are sports that fans of those particular competitions will watch but don't have mass appeal. Premier Sports really need something like UFC, NFL or the Europa League to be considered main stream. Box Nation on the other hand will be showing the best boxing action, featuring the biggest names in the sport, from the UK and world wide. No other channel in the UK, including SKY Sports, will be showing the same amount of live shows as Box Nation. Box Nation will be showcasing the best action and talent each and every week. So unlike Premier Sports, Box Nation will be the clear leader in the content it broadcasts. I think the problem for Premier Sports and Box Nation is the Virgin model doesn't suit their needs. I would however really like someone from either Virgin or Box Nation to come out and clarify what is happening. If no deal can be done, tell us. ---------- Post added at 12:41 ---------- Previous post was at 12:39 ---------- Quote:

Given that VM seems not to want to add new channels then eventually VM is going to loose significant subscribers to Sky and other providers who want to watch channels like BoxNation and Premier Sports and they will not be able to explain this away by saying what they said last time when the first evidence of a significant loss in TV subscribers took place. It could be the lack of BoxNation on VM which will finally start to see the company loosing really significant numbers of TV customers and it will be Sky who will benefit. |

I mentioned the channel the other night to Virgin Media retentions - never heard of it. All I want to know is Virgin Media and Box Nation still in discussions? If not, please let us know. I'd much rather know that a channel isn't coming, instead of being strung along. Box Nation should never have suggested at their press conference that they where in talks with Virgin. Box Nation should never have used Virgins logo on their website. Virgin should never have included Hopkins Vs. Dawson on their website as being one of their sporting televised highlights for October 2011. All parties involved are sending out very mixed signals and it's not fair to the customer. |

I've also went back and watched the launch press conference again. Richard Brooke, the chairman of BoxNation, confirmed the channel would only be free for the first month or so. BoxNation have confirmed that all future online broadcasts will be subscription based. BoxNation also confirmed that it's unlikely that the channel will have a freeview period on Virgin, unless they are on Virgin very soon. I think they are going to subscription sooner than suggested. I think they will be subscription based if not before Burns Vs. Katsidis on the 05th November then certainly before Cotto Vs. Margarito II on the 03rd December 2011. |

More boxing tonight free online from BoxNation:
http://www.boxnation.tv/ From 7pm live from Germany exciting, but clumsy, Marko Huck defends his WBO Cruiserweight Title against unfancied Argentien Rogelio Omar Rossi. Should be plenty of undercard action. Then from the small hours of the morning it's a real treat as Nonito Donaire defends his WBC & WBO Bantamweight Titles against the undefeated former Flyweight and Super Flyweight champ Omar Andres Narvaez. If you can't watch the fight from Germany, Donaire Vs. Narvaez is a must. Should be a battle. Expect Donaire to win by K.O! Seeing the fight is live from New york, I expect the programme to be on at 2:00am. |
