Month on month. Really? That is a fact is it? The only thing that will have changed for the negative is Sky Atlantic (if you want it). That isn't month on month is it.

After seeing that trailer I am definitely not concerned over not having Sky Atlantic SD/HD and I am certainly not going to lose any sleep over it.

So Atlantic won't be showing Sopranos & Weeds?

Can you explain why the web page specifically mentions them?

Or do you have a definition of 'facts' we don't know about???:

Kate Winslet mini-series Mildred Pierce........ Whoopie, cant wait for this one

From stunning new epics like Martin Scorsese's Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire (pictured) and fantasy drama Game of Thrones... no interest what so ever.

new comedy How To Make It In America....... no interest.

seventh series of Entourage, fifth series of Mad Men....... again no interest.

classic HBO original series The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, comedy-drama Weeds..... re-runs

Yep, read it again and it still doesnt make me want to run off to Sky.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

You know....whilst I love the HD channels as much as anyone else and I do appreciate that more channels mean more choice...how much TV can anyone watch, seriously?

Personally, I haven't delved into The Sopranos, The Wire or Mad Men etc (I know, shame on me) but most of them have been on VOD virtually since it was introduced. It looks like Sky Atlantic will be showing the majority of shows that people have had the opportunity of watching before so we won't be missing out on much...except the constant ad-breaks of course :D As many people are no doubt aware, there are always other ways to watch the latest US dramas or comedy.

I'm sure that there has been some survey done and I bet that survey says that in this age of multi-channel TV, people probably only watch a handful of them regularly. OK, SA might be one of them given the opportunity but what you haven't got, you don't miss IMO.

However, Virgin do need something else to attack from the front with. Tivo - yes, Broadband - yes but surely there must be something out there that despite Sky's riches of channels and HD, will make people think 'Hmmm, Sky has got a great selection of HD channels but you know, VM has the edge by a long chalk'

I'm not sure what this is yet but I am pretty sure it's going to be tied in Tivo / Internet on your TV in some way. One thing VM should not do is hang around with the promised Tivo apps. Just imagine - proper email / messaging even Skype and Skype video calling via your TV? Browsing your pictures via your Tivo and one click sends them to a friend? The opportunity of viewing news channels from other countries via the web on the Tivo box? Maybe even online gaming via a web browser? Quake Live via Tivo anyone?

Linear channels will be dead and buried in the next ten years so why worry?

mersey70 06-01-2011 01:02

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

I wasn't aware any version of Tivo around the world has ever had an open web browser, it is very much a walled garden isn't it?

I think having the ability to watch news channels from around the world is a bit fanciful but I suppose you never know.

The trouble is with VM and any potential new customer is while they do have the upper hand with technology, a fibre network capable of true VOD and the upcoming new Tivo (but let's call a spade a spade, it is a STB, a good one but a STB nonetheless) sadly for VM it is content that always wins hands down when it comes to customers choosing a TV provider, and always has. VM are just not in Sky's league in this respect, even the BBC struggle against them. But VM do currently have the best widespread broadband in the land and this is what will make them money.

Seems like Sky TV is the future of Digital TV. I mean channels get added on there all the time. They are sadly more dominent and Virgin only add some channels but sometimes has to delete some to carry some :(

Sky are basically a tv platform only they rely on bt phonelines to provide their broadband /talk plans ,virgin on the other hand is a platform where broadband is the number one product, virgin will unlikely have the reach of sky in the near future for tv or the cash, so yes sky will be the dominent tv platform having said that virgin do quite well in the tv stakes there are not that many channels worth having that are not on virgin.:)

Ok - so sky add channels all the time. Just how many of those are channels worth "bookmarking" ? I would rather have quality over quantity any day

Talk about giving a slighlty false impression. How about THIS part...

Virgin and BT, which show Sky channels including premium sports through a wholesale arrangement, have held talks over the new channel but have been unable to agree a deal. The broadcasters are hopeful of reaching an agreement, but remain some way apart over terms for the channel that will also show the new seasons of Mad Men and Entourage.

We didn't even know they were trying and it sounds like they are not stopping to try and get it... Glass half full people!!!!

The trouble is if Sky decide that they would rather keep it to themselves to force those who want it on to their platform then what is to stop them? If they are still negotiating then why are Sky allready advertising it as an exclusive.
A lot of cable customers give Sky loads of money through sports , movies and Hd but that appears to be not enough for them. Like every company they want to be a monopoly and they have got enough politicians in their pocket to make sure nobody opposes them.

I pretty much agree with all that, especially with the ConDems in power. Sky will more than likely be able to do what they want. But Sky and it's rabid owners are 1st and foremost businessmen. They need reveniew and as they know from the Sky1 VM debacle they can't really do without OUR money as well as Sky customer money.

I still think it will come in time. Lets be fair to some extent. It's a Sky channel, why wouldn't they make it just available to Sky as a carrot for them to munch on for a bit. Afterall Virgin did it with Living HD.

From the Guardian says it all really "Sky Atlantic HD is a key part of our strategy to help further grow the content gap between what you can get with Sky, and what you can get elsewhere."

Well I won't be going back to sky.

If I return to sky I would have to return to a BT line for my BB which means back to 4meg.

I love my 50meg to much and as the main tv watcher in our house is the Mrs an her favourtie shows are Eastenders/Corrie/Gray anatomoy we won't changing back.

Although with 50 meg the avi boxsets are only 50 minutes away. Not that I would do that.

Although I wouldn't mind Virgin hurrying Tivo along, the days of linear TV channels are numbered I say.

I think Mobes is right. It will come eventually. Sky will keep it exclusive to try and increase subscriber numbers. When they dry up so the amount of new subscribers is back to the 'usual' amount, they will then be more open to an agreement with other providers to further increase their revenue.

Also, I think it's up to VM to maximise Tivo's potential and start getting bigger and better exclusive VOD deals, to counteract Sky. At the end of the day VOD seems to be the future of TV.

so it's the usual case of VM sell their channels to Sky. Sky close some of them then start a new channel and don't give VM access to it.

Surely this is the sort of thing OFCOM should be clamping down on.

As others have said what needs to happen is Sky need to be split into two to stop this sort of thing happening

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

I think a balanced view needs to be taken on this. With hindsight it appears Virgin maybe should have looked for another buyer of their VMTV channels, although at the time the deal seemed good. However, when it comes to Sky Atlantic, we are where we are and Virgin should not pay any price for it, Virgin were right to not be bullied by Sky with the Sky basic channels issue in 2007 and must stand firm again. One good thing about Virgin is their prices are better than Sky, ESPN is included in the basic package and very good VOD services. If Virgin just went around making quick deals to secure channels they'd never had got ESPN included in the XL package and HD channels with no premium on XL. I do think that there are issues in relation to the music channels which could be improved, thinking of MTV Classics and CSC media channels missing, although music on demand is very good. I worked out that for what I pay around £86 a month on Virgin, would cost over £100 a month on Sky, so overall Virgin should get credit for this.

I agree, even if there is a delay, VM will get SA eventually. The programmes will no doubt be repeated endlessly like the other Sky channels, so we won't actually miss anything.

it does seem typical that this is similar to the HBO deal that VM had except Sky seem to have made a better job of it and as usual with all things Sky as they are doing it everyone wants it. When VM had access to a lot of this content it wasn't advertised as much or as well

I would take that article with a big pinch of salt, lord knows where BT would get anymore DTT bandwidth from and even if they could find some I would imagine their customers would prefer some other channels, notably SSP 3 & 4, ahead of an unproven channel that is yet to launch.

I don't think Sky could be any clearer, it is their exclusive much like when ITV plc said ITV2 HD was exclusive to Sky HD customers, and still is.

Because no one has unbundled my local exchange and getting TV from one company and keeping VM 50meg would be mean paying over the odds.

So forthe sake of getting 1 TV channel "sky Atlantic" I would lose 46megs of BB download speed and pay probably an extra £20 month, Infact more as I have VIP-50.

Not worth it to me. More important is the BB speed with 2 teenage daughers both seeming to constantly to stream youtube videos whilst on facebook. It kills xboxlive live for me when I was on the 4 meg. The 50 eats it for breakfast plus I can limit a download to 25meg and still not have my service crippled.

I agree it very much depends where you live but on the other hand if, like me, you live in an area that benefits from very good ADSL speeds Sky Broadband can be excellent for upto 20mb customers simply because it isn't traffic managed so if you are a heavy user a decent 15mb line like I can achieve can be better than VM's XL broadband.

I know I am in the minority though.

Must agree mate Sky have all these channels that show repeats all day , I've looked for films a few times for the little un and every time I look Planet 51 seems to be on. I would rather have just one good channel than 6 packed with repeats and crap.

Off topic but how bad is the PQ on Eastenders no way is that HD.

I think the same can be said for a lot of pay channels, UKTV are as guilty as anyone and seem to have blocks of a few hours of programmes that just rotate.

BBC 3 & 4 are not much better either.

We always have it on and you are right, it's rubbish HD.

We were hoping to see a huge difference with HD on our new 46" TV and I still can't see it myself, in fact none of us can.

It's better but no way is there 5 times more detail as the ads say although some channels and programmes are better than others. US sports seem good on ESPN but US SD is often rubbish and I only looked at them for a comparison, I'd rather watch paint dry, or EastEnders!.

I'll shut up anyway as it's off topic.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

I find BBC's HD channels, like Sky's, something of a mixed bag. Zen on Sunday was pretty underwhelming, but Upstairs Downstairs looked good to me, as did Not Going Out last night.
Over on the Sky Movies channels some look very good, whereas with Modern Greats I often struggle to see a difference from the SD versions. Sky Sports football is okay, but when they show American Football it is eye-popping. Not all HD is equal, and I think Sky could be doing a better job with their offering too.

Moonblade 07-01-2011 10:56

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

Just a few items I would like to imput. HD tv is as much about the sound as about PQ, Zen had a 5.1 sound track that added nicely to the story. BT has VDSL upgrades exclusive to them, so Sky is not going to get speeds of 50+ mb. My main concern is the lack of VOD on Virgin. This should be the jewel in the crown, but at the moment BT are leaving VM in their dust, and Sky have done a goog job with anytime. VM should be concentrating on its strengths, but seem to react to what other suppliers are doing and not developing a stratagy of their own. Also 5.1 sound on VOD and catch up would be nice, as you have with BT and Sky anytime.

If more is available than it should be there - but there is a lot on VM.

Still know HD from ITV though - two years after it was announced.

Had the V+ for some time and most is on a cycle, ie: carnivale.

Have had chance to catch up on stuff I missed the first time round to be fair. ;)

the reason I stay with VM is that the BB is second to none, the BT line in my area is a max of 2 mb, had have had dealings with Sky in a buisness role and found them to be untrustworthy. This is just a personal view.

I have been in contact with VM about ESPN America in HD to find out what the score is and "they are still in negotiations" and ask that we bear with them while negotiations are completed.
Lets hope we get some good news in the near future .

Would they even be involved with negotiations with ESPN?

I am just guessing but it's more likely VM and ESPN cannot agree wholesale carriage terms under their own pricing structure.

As far as I can see ESPN are pretty platform neutral.

Media Boy EXCLUSIVE: Virgin to carry out work on their On Demand Network.

Virgin will upgrades up to four sites each morning - usually taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's between 0001-0900.

During that period, customers in the sites being upgraded will have no access to VoD. Should customers attempt to use the service, they will see the following on screen message:

"On Demand is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later"

Although no new VoD sessions will be able to be ordered from 0001 on the night of the upgrade, VoD sessions which are already running will be allowed to continue until all have completed (approximately 0200).

The planned upgrades will be taking place in multiple regions from 11th January 2011 to 18th February 2011.

TNA is no longer broadcasting on UK Telly.

With BSkyB still to give them an time slot for TNA Impact. TNA deal with Extreme Sports to broadcast TNA PPV run out in December with no new deal being signed.

But BSkyB hope to have an time slot for TNA Impact ''by the end of January.''

The planned upgrades will be taking place in multiple regions from 11th January 2011 to 18th February 2011.

Will this cover all areas with all areas of the country with all being completed by the 18th Feb? Or is it just to upgrade some areas with capacity problems?

Still to launch new TV broadcaster Electric Sofa is saying in emails that they are not going to launch Film GB, Sofa Stars or Sofa Screen on Virgin Media due to ''lack of space''.

Too much moaning on this site. You have the choice to go and pay for a dish.

If I could I'd have Sky for TV and VM for BB and Telephone. Sky are best for TV and VM are best for BB.

That's not true; not everyone can have a sky dish, for a variety of reasons.

Ok mea culpa on that but then if you cannot pay for a dish what's the point in grumbling about what VM provide?

Media Boy EXCLUSIVE: Five to be rebrand next month.

I have been told today by an Virgin insider that Five will be rebranded as Channel 5 on February 14th.

Five will become Channel 5
Five HD will become Channel 5 HD

Then later in February Demand Five will be rebranded.

Digital Channels Fiver and Five USA will follow in March.

l try to give a constuctive opinion about Virgin, if they were upfront with customers instead of giving vague dates and promises people would be happier about things.

VM turned off their analogue tv network last year which freed up enough space for 300+ SD channels, or 100 sd channels, dozens of HD channels, more vod, more broadband or any other combination VM choose to use. So, I'd take what Electric Sofa say with a pinch of salt.

Electric Sofa haven't even secured enough programming to last a few months yet across their channels (which may never launch anyway) so I don't think its too great a loss if they don't come to cable.
