They have started getting HD channels - 30+ added in just over a year.

If you just want as many as are available, you should go to Sky - you'll pay for them, but that's your choice.

Do you think there be any good come out of it?

I have not seen any info on Universal HD launching on Monday or have I seen any info on BBC One HD launching on November 3rd.

I only know Virgin are testing BBC One HD out, the launch date is just an rumour on Digital Spy.

As for results I think Virgin may confrim some new deals on October 27th.

My Samsung TV has a cable tuner in it so I typed in the frequency on the screenshot. BBC One HD does indeed appear, EPG data just says coming soon and a on demand trailer is shown.

The three other test channels are you able to post the numbers so the speculation can start. As it seems from the channel number that it could be 018 = 108?

Nobody can ever be 100 % but I'm confident they will happen by the end of November. Virgin will want a really strong HD lineup to help with the TIVO push when it's launched. I don't like stating to much on here after Big Red got slated just wait and see you can either praise me or slate me LOL ;)

The only other identifiers that came up with that frequency were several unviewable ITV1 HD, STV HD & UTV HD's

How do I get ITV2 HD?
ITV2 HD is currently only available on Sky and you need to be a Sky+HD customer. You can find out more about Sky+HD and sign up here. If you're a Sky+HD customer you'll be able to find ITV2 HD on Sky channel 225.

Good wording i think that it has changed from the original wording to the page?

In amongst all the fuss about HD channels, you can almost lose track of "normal" channel launches :-)

I seem to recall mentions Al Jazeera once, that's gone by the wayside.

And without wishing to dredge up old threads, would I be right in thinking some of the obscure MTV channels are caught in VM/Viacom politics?

That's all for now :-)

I agree Digital Fanatic back then MTV for me was a lot better others may though disagree,MTV Europe was a great watch with more music leaning to my listening ie Rock but i do sometimes watch kerrang,i wish VM would get more heavy rock on their music on demand some motorhead, deeppurple,Zeppelin ,Rolling Stones,Hawkwind, would not go down badly.:)

Looking very unlikely that Liverpool will go into administartion now as Tom Hicks and George Gillett have accepted defeat in their attempts to block the club's sale

But if they did i'd guess they would close it down.

The chances of this coming to Virgin Media because of sky is next to none.

How many of the 28 Hd channels that we have launched the same day as on sky? Is it the norm that it's staggered as it's been recently?

Hardly any.

ITV1HD and Five HD were launched on the same day as Sky and Living HD and Film 4 HD launched on Virgin exclusively

So the norm is that it launches on one platform first rather than both at same time. Thanks for info.

the norm is that they launch on Sky first then while VM are still thinking about asking if there is any chance of carrying the channels.

then after a long long wait VM may launch or may not dependong on how they feel.
only excptions to this was ITV HD, Five HD, living HD and film 4 HD (the last 2 were exclusive but Sky now own living HD).

Bit unfair that really don't forget it's always easier for Sky negotiating when you consider they have around 10 million subscribers .

its nothing to do with being unfair its about telling it as it is from a customers point of view without sugar coating anything.

we all know Sky are the biggest pay tv provider in the UK but VM are the 2nd and as such should be able to get deals done pretty easily but they just dont seem to do that.

sure its good to have all the HD for free but VM just dont seem to make headway with HD purely because they trickle the channels out and Sky keep marching on totally over shadowing anything VM do with HD.

just today Sky got Disney XD HD, last week ITV 2 HD, Nickelodeon HD and the week before EDEN HD and Living HD.
in 2 months we have had Comedy central HD and Sky HD. sure 2 channels in 2 months but SKY have added more in the last fortnight and more than double that in the last 4 weeks.

if i could get Sky i would in a shot purely for HD but i cant get permission to get a dish on my house form both landlord and council.

you call it unfair !!!
surely you mean unfair to customers who have to watch Sky get HD channels while VM seem to twiddle their thumbs and not get any further foreward as every step VM make with HD Sky move 5 further foreward making the gap wider overall.

muppetman11 15-10-2010 23:39

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

Sky use there powers to make it hard for Virgin to add channels if you look at how many HD channels are Sky owned or part owned you would understand , Sky get HD channels so quick because the channel provider is desperate to get on there epg and reach 10 million customers plus they have deeper pockets.

Personally, most would rather VM took their time in negotiations to get the best deal for the customer. This means getting channels included in the XL pack at no extra cost.

Look at ESPN (incl HD) - some complained that VM didn't sign in days when Sky signed very quickly - VM got it all included in the XL pack as they played it right.

I don't mean to be rude to you personally, but you are the worst type of customer. You have no choice, but to only have VM for multi-channel tv and I'm sure there are people stuck with Sky and want VM.

You will never be happy unless you get the same choice as Sky and will always be critical regardless of what VM do. :2cents:

i have to agree sure its best to take your time an get the best deal you can but there is taking time to do that and then blatently just not doing nothing, im not saying thats what VM are doing but it seems that way when channels have been on Sky for months or even years (History HD and Nat Geo Wild for example) and we still have no sign of them ever coming to VM.

i also agree that i probably fit the stereotype of the worst possible customer but when you are stuck with no/very little choice sometimes you need to be vocal. i cant get Sky (as mentioned) there in no BT lines installed on my estate so BT is not an option and Freeview offers nothing much at all.

i get a good deal off VM for the package i get and have got a good loyalty discount but its still annoying that there is a lack of HD that i would love to have.

i know VM have added HD and there is probably more to come but it just seems to pale in comparison to Sky and maybe i notice it more as im not able to access it no matter how much i would like to.

Virgin sometimes wait until the Sd contract is up to bundle the HD version as part of the new agreement , this way it's more cost effective. I believe they will do this with the ITV HD channels and my media contact says the same but nobody knows for sure. ITV 3 and 4 HD launch in November so watch this space.

Further to my previous post (I have a Samsung TV that has a cable tuner in it which I am told is quite common with this manufacturer) the only new channel that seems to be testing is BBC One HD (actually it isn't a true test transmission it just has EPG data accompanied by an On Demand trailer), there were some other channels listed as Test Channels but Media Boy confirmed they are just something to do with On Demand.

It's a bit fiddly to do a search as I have to balance the cable screw connector against the aerial input of the set but I will have another look later to see if anything new has appeared.

You really need to get a splitter and a proper 'F to Belling-Lee' adapter so that you can have the TV and STB connected at the same time (assuming the signal levels from the street cabinet will allow a split).

Thanks for the advice but I'm not interested having the cable input permanently connected to the TV, it was just to do a quick search to see if anything was testing. Besides I have the UHF aerial connected for freeview.

Anyway I have done another search and there still appears to be nothing else testing apart from BBC One HD.

It's all about YOU. What about US?

You could use a splitter/combiner for the DTT and CATV connections to the back of the set! I must say that I'm a little surprised that there aren't separate connections for the aerial and cable.

No there is just a standard aerial input. I am surprised there is a cable tuner in it, according to the manual it includes MPEG4 too but it was bought in Argos so I assume it's a UK model. I will just take the odd look now and again, I promise!

Interestingly EPG data for other regions appears too (STV, UTV, RTE etc) but they are not viewable, it dosen't say scrambled like the pay channels it just says service not available but there are lots of manual tune options asking for all sorts of parameters but I wouldn't know what to type in. I just did a plug and play search and also a search starting and ending with the frequency shown on the screenshots provided by the earlier poster.

Hallmark Channel UK is owned by NBC Universal and the name is (was) used under licence from Crown Media (aka Hallmark Gold Crown/Hallmark Cards) in the US but this arrangement has now expired. Hallmark Channel in the US is owned by Crown Media itself and so is not the same channel as we have here.

AFAIK the rebrand is just that and there is no suggestion that any contracts between VM and NBC Universal have expired, been renewed or renegotiated. Therefore I would not expect any change to the VM line-up other than the name change for now. If Universal HD does appear any time soon its unlikely to be related to the Hallmark rebranding and would be part of separate ongoing negotiations between VM and NBC Universal.

To avoid disappointment you should try not to connect the two events.
