Browser cache has nothing to do with it. People should stop suggesting to empty the browser cache when speedtest.net's technology already bypasses it. There's no way any browser cache would ever affect the results.

On the other hand Kaspersky (at least with any of the networking components turned on) does make your download results jump higher than they should, but does not usually affect upload.

But I do think the first guy was actually on the 200mb trial by the sounds of his post.

Virgin can't guarantee or control your speed outside of their network. The USA is quite a long way outside of their network.

No, but the amount of bandwidth available to/from the USA to VM customers via peering/transit/etc. are entirely within their control.

I was trying to answer the guy's issue in easy to understand terms. If I'd wanted to batter his head with discussion of transit and peering I would have.

I'd prefer not to get to the stage of having to post in unnecessarily gratuitous and quite obvious detail to avoid a pedant picking holes.

qasdfdsaq 08-12-2010 22:21

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

Not picking holes. Simply stating I disagree that VM has no control over speeds outside their network. VM choose exactly how much speed and bandwidth they want to provide (and pay for) to offshore locations and therefore are in complete control of how much the end user gets. They don't operate the offshore network directly but are still in control of which ones they use, how much capacity they buy, and what level of speed (i.e. SLA) gets guaranteed.

If they choose providers that cannot control or guarantee their interconnect speeds then that was their choice. A choice they had complete control in making.

You've never worked with transit and peering providers, or for that matter large networks have you?

Large? No, not really. Technically though we are a transit provider where I work.

Small providers do have complete control over who they buy their transit from, as long as said providers have a POP nearby. Same for end users. Big ISPs should already have their own backbone connected to all major POPs so they don't even have this to worry about.

Seeing as VM has a national network, purchasing power, and far more money, I don't see anything that'd get in the way of them buying however much transit bandwidth they need (except maybe for corporate politics, which I gladly do not have the luxury to deal with).

I resent the implication that VM aren't capable of delivering high speeds and stable performance.

[Edit]
It looks like I've been resegmented. So in theory they didn't actually add any extra capacity, just rebalanced the existing capacity. Still, it's an improvement nonetheless.

qasdfdsaq 17-12-2010 03:21

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

VM business doesn't even have a 50mb service yet. Most common cause is buffering (not caching!) caused by AV software (i.e. Kaspersky)

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

I have just spent a couple of days without my trial speed of 200/16 Mb. I am temporarily back on 50/1.6Mb. I haven't experienced buffering when streaming HD from online servers since the 200mb trial started. Today my PC stuttered through a blue ray version of Iron Man 1, streamed from my Livedrive server by ftp. The same film runs smoothly from a hard drive.

I suspect it is the limited upstream bandwidth that is the problem. 50Mb down should be plenty enough, but you need a decent upstream to allow your system to chatter smartly with the streaming server. Games are also less responsive. Things are much worse when some else is using bandwidth in the house. Bring on the 10:1 upgrade quickly please.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/01/91.png

And for London:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/01/92.png

Considering I am on 50Mbs I don't see how this is possible, maybe it has something to do with them getting ready for 100Mbs?

But with AV disabled I get:

qasdfdsaq 01-01-2011 18:43

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

It's been said a hundred times AV causes buffering which causes the speed test to get confused and report spurious results.

Yes but you have used Telford's so-called 100Mb tester by the look of it. I got very poor results from it, inconsistent with reliable testers like NAMESCO, London.

I thought Telford's tester looked like this:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/01/53.jpg

To be honest it's good to see a speed tester that actually measures download pauses, RTT, and quality as this is an important factor most speed tests miss out on and very hard for a typical home user to determine.

The extra data is shown in plain text. It is potentially useful, as you say, to have the extra information, but only if it is accurate. I don't think it is.

Hmm, I don't see the extra info in plain text or any buttons to show additional info - this is all I get after a test:

Ignore the DL speed, that's Kaspersky playing up as usual.
Am I missing something?

Sorry!! :nutter: My mistake. I confused connection analyser with Telford's tester. They were in the same thread so I must have associated them. I didn't find connection analyser much good either.

Anyway, I found Telford's 100Mb test didn't live up to it's name. It couldn't give my 200Mb trial connection anything more than 80Mb. Another guy with a symmetrical 100Mb reported this: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35151863-post5.html

The test does 50Mb well, but it can't manage 100mb or more.

BTW. I dumped Kasperski. Instead I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It does a good job, with virtually no CPU usage.

Not making as big a difference for me, looks like the faster the machine the less of a skew it creates:

*Note* None of these were done on VM's 50mb, just illustrating the effect of Kaspersky.

Heh, that'd been me. Did another test today:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/01/51.jpg
Doesn't seem as terrible now, but the results are still wrong - it's reporting upload speed over double the actual rate it's uploading at, and the upload is very bursty during the test.

I can confirm what Igni said, it's hosted on a 100mb connection and cannot reliably test more than one 50mb user at a time and zero 100mb users. Given that, I'd say it's OK to use for 50mb testers as long as it's repeated once or twice.

Crawley.

After almost a year of variable speeds, my up/down speeds are rock solid with very little variance. This seemed to kick in around December last year.

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

Indeed ;)

But yes the new one's Bitdefender + some components of AVG. There's some info on the website asking people still using PCGuard to remove it and replace it with the new stuff, so the Kaspersky based product is no longer available. I think most mention of Kasperksy + Speed tests is from people who have bought or acquired it independently, not from VM.

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

Hello all, first time poster here although I must know some of you from Virgin Media's own forums. These are my current results:

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...ronjm/VM50.png

Lovely upload speeds I get - maximum 0.4Mbps and that's quite late at night. I realise my area is still being planned for the 5Mbps upload upgrade, but I won't see any of it regardless as I can't even reach anywhere near my current 1.75Mbps upload cap.

I've been told there's an upstream utilisation issue in my area but I take that with a pinch of salt. An engineer who came round my flat to check out this issue tried a VMNG300 cable modem on my line (after checking that my line was ok) and it immediately got great upload speeds of around 1.5Mbps whereas two Super Hubs we tried got 0.3Mbps...
