Re: 2010 General Election: The Cable Forum Exit Poll
Exit Poll suggests that there will be a Hung Parliament with the Lib Dems losing seats. Losing Seats!

Re: 2010 General Election: The Cable Forum Exit Poll
Exit Poll = Tory with 307 ~~ Labour with 255 and Lib Dems with 59
So possibly hung but maybe minority government |

To win that vote, the LDs and Labour need to back him to outvote the tories. If he doesn't win the vote, then (if memory serves) DC can call a vote and if he doesn't win, new election for all. If GB wins, then Labour would have given concessions to the LDs in return for their votes. It becomes very hard to get difficult bills through the house because the Tories have so many more MPs so could block anything which they deemed bad for the country if they got a few Labour/LD backbenchers to vote against it as well. Basically, if a single party has a strong majority, any reasonable bill they bring to the commons will be voted through, it's only bills which cause a huge back bench revolt and are not approved by the opposition which won't get through. If you look at countries with PR, they tend to get hung parliments due to all the smaller parties having MPs. Israel is a prime example, and the lack of a strong government has damaged the peace process on numerous occasions as so many concessions are needed to get even the basic things done. |

My problem was that the incumbent MP for this area has consistently been receptive to local issues & was the only candidate to take the trouble to come round & knock on my door & ask what my thoughts were, prior to the election.
I decided she would get my vote, despite representing the Labour party, because she has arguably worked hard for her constituents since election in 1997 & I wanted to try & ensure she would still be in Parliament, even if her party were no longer in the majority. |

Re: 2010 General Election: The Cable Forum Exit Poll
Could the different approaches to the queue problems be partly to do with the location of the actual voting room. If it is next to a easily accessible area it might be very difficult to close off an area properly with the people properly isolated.
Two possible reasons for the queues:- 1) Labour voters having to get some 'Dutch courage' before voting.:D 2) It takes time for a person to vote 20 times. They cant vote again too quickly or they'll be recognised. |
Re: 2010 General Election: The Cable Forum Exit Poll
Washington & Sunderland West (the 2nd seat to declare) had an 11.6% swing from Labour to the Tories.

However, some people were apparently queueing for up to three hours, so you can't blame them for being late to the polling station. It's also not the fault of voters if the polling station runs out of ballot papers, or only has one person handing ballot papers out, etc. One news item mentioned somewhere (Sheffield?) where lots of students were trying to vote, without polling cards, which then slowed it down for everyone else, causing people who did have polling cards to lose their chance to vote due to the delays. |
