With pampered Terry, over his ankle, it should have been his neck, he's broken, they are going on about a blow to the squad, there are players that can replace him, I wonder if Wayne Bridge will send him a get well card.

after losing the captaincy and the poor form he has had this season i'm not sure if he can be bothered. If it is a metertarsal then isn't that about 6 weeks minimum and when this happened to Beckham he wasn't fit when he started playing and that affected us in a few games

Some Carragher quotes courtesy of the fiver...

• "I was never in love with playing for England in the first place."
• "Sitting on the England coach as it prepared to drive us away from the World Cup in Germany, I received a text message. 'Fcuk it! It's only England'. I'd just missed a penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out against Portugal. Representing your country is the ultimate honour, especially in the World Cup. Not to me."
• "I would rather miss for England than LFC."
• "I wasn't giving up my football career or my ambitions. Only England."
• "The Liver Bird mauled the Three Lions in the fight for my loyalties."
• "Whenever I returned home from disappointing England experiences, one unshakeable, overriding thought pushed itself to the forefront of my mind, no matter how much the rest of the nation mourned. 'At least it wasn't Liverpool,' I'd repeat to myself, over and over."

Fair point but I was not expecting any floor wiping just a decent performance and for me it was not there. Again we were almost useless till the second half. For this we'll be punished against the big teams. I did start to feel good about our chances in the run-up but in the last two games I've lost alot of hope :(

We are going to play the best teams in the World Cup, England must pick the best players for it, and the way it is at the moment they are a farce, some of the players he could pick are the automatic ones, that normally pick, he should pick them on performance, and some of the players that played in that poor game, should NOT be on the plane, they are playing for there COUNTRY and the SHIRT, NOT just the money.

Probably because Ledley King is by far the better player and obviously proved his fitness over the past couple of weeks. Its not like either of them would get a game anyway unless Ferdinand or Terry get injured, it definately wont be more than 2 in a week so his fitness isn't really an issue.

I'm glad Capello hasn't let Walcotts hat-trick against Croatia sway his decision, hes been awful for England since then and not much better for Arsenal. He showed it again in the two warm up matches, he's quick and thats about it, for a winger his final ball is awful.

I would have liked to see Adam Johnson get in the squad, but his lack of experiance went against him, definately one for the future though.

As for Englands goalkeeper situation, its definately going to be the case of picking the best from a bad bunch.

Damien 02-06-2010 10:08

Re: Football World Cup 2010

Walcott has had a bad season, not least because he has sat out a lot of it due to Injury and had limited chances to make extended periods of play. It's unfair that people say he is coasting on the hat-trick against Croatia though. He was a good player for Arsenal before and after that and had shown signs of his promise at intervals this season.

punky 02-06-2010 10:35

Re: Football World Cup 2010

Keown was going on about his explosive pace but he looked so slow. He never once beat his man. Lennon came on and immediately did it. Lennon has also been out a lot with injury. I can't comment on Walcott for Arsenal but for England he has been poor since that Croatia game.

Harry was talking earlier about Dawson and Parker. Why were they even selected? They never even got a chance. Dawson had an excellent season. Both performed well in training. Capello just wasted their time and their emotions.

I'm really am becoming ambivalent about this world cup now. All the team infighting, players out of form, stupid squad selections and tactics, poor friendlies, the lousy ball. It will be amazing if we actually get past the group stage.

Kymmy 02-06-2010 10:41

Re: Football World Cup 2010

The friendlies though are all about experimentation, but as with the WC2010 qualifiers once the game is serious then lately England have got down to playing well..

Only time will tell, let's see how England are in a few weeks time

Capello has sent out the wrong message by picking a crocked Barry (there is no guarantee he will be fit for any of the group games) and I too can't understand how Dawson has been left out. He has been pretty solid this season and has contributed greatly to Spurs top 4 finish. Huddlestone could have played the defensive midfield role in Barry's absence in my opinion. (No I'm not a Spurs fan but you have to give credit where it's due).

I'd rather we got knocked out in the quarters with a squad consisting players like Dawson, A Johnson, Huddlestone, Scott parker, Leighton Baines than the same old same old - who I doubt get beyond the quarters anyway.

Personally I'd like to see him stay, Swapping manager for manager for manager hasn't done England much good and in 24 games he's lost only 2 and drawn 4.. A lot of premier league managers would kill for that statistic.

Re: Football World Cup 2010

I can`t see what all the fuss is about. To me the only shock is SWP going instead of Walcott and i doubt he`d be going if Beckam was fit!

If you had to name the 23 just after the qualifying games ended you wouldn`t have have a much different group. Capello obviously has faith in the players he`s picked (unlike the rest of us).
England will probably have a tournament along the same lines as the last half a dozen, they will be a difficult team to beat but nothing special and as soon as they come up against some real class it will be adios amigos

Then the players will go back to their respective clubs and carry on filling them boots with cash!

I reckon one of the dark horses who aren`t getting much attention could well be lifting the Jules Rimet trophy...

Walcott's remit in the 15-minute workout was simple: Get the ball in, unopposed, for the Spurs hitman to finish.

Yet barndoor and beachball sprung to mind as the young Gunner failed time and again to tee up his team-mate.

Balls flew over 6ft 7in Crouch's head, he had to check his run as the cross was too low or behind him. He even resorted to catching and throwing the ball back for Walcott to try again.

Things did not improve 24 hours later as Walcott and fellow hopeful Adam Johnson pinged 25-yard passes across the pitch to each other.

No frills - simply pass, control and drill it back.

Yet while Johnson was near foot-perfect, Walcott's touch was woeful, as balls invariably drifted yards away from him.

They, as you say, are only friendlies though. Italy are renowned for being slow starters. You never know, as we have an Italian manager, we could be starting slowly also :erm:

I think you can call up a replacement for an injured* player up to 24 hours before the teams first match. So that would be Friday.

Rather than a striker who is listed as a goalie :)

From that North Korea story:

Quote:

In a statement, world football's governing body said: "The squad lists that the teams had provided to Fifa by 1 June 2010 are final and can no longer be changed. On the final lists must be no more than 23 players, three of whom shall be goalkeepers.

"The only exception is in the case of a serious injury of a player in the list of 23, who could be replaced up until 24 hours before the first match of the team in the competition.

I don't know what hell is going through footballers' minds during these friendlies. Tanaka took Drogba out with an insane flying knee. Also Azerbaijan v Honduras was almost a bloodbath as well. One was sent off and Palacios was lucky to stay on after a 2 footed lunge.

Football song for England, all the songs l have heard about England have so far been rubbish, the song that should have been recorded, should have been the anthem ' YOUR NEVER WALK ALONE, the money will go to charity.

Can anyone work out who scored this goal? :)

Robben injury not as bad as feared, so he stays in the squad. Hopefully he will be fit to play after the group stage.

It's nearly upon us!!

The opening ceremony starts at 13:00 BST tomorrow and is televised on ITV with the first match following soon afterwards on the same channel (South Africa v Mexico)

I'm supporting two teams this year England (where I was born)and South Africa (where I was brought up) but I wish all the teams a great tournament.

I'll close this thread about midday tomorrow and start up the proper tournament thread at the same time.
