Whats going on with the linear HD channels?... i was very much hopeing one of them would be Eurosport HD and in time for The Australian Open... fecking stupid we STILL have to put up with Eurosport in 4:3 >:(

i agree mobes, bbc is pretty much only doing murray matches, eurosport is poor quality and 4:3 :( Why are they still using 4:3 anyway, if they are shooting in hd why not just convert that into Widescreen PDTV??

Exactly... there is NO excuse for British Eurosport not to be transmitted in 16:9 in SD... pathetic! (This may not be Virgins fault i guess if the only get the stream but...)

I have had supposed hd box from day one,It was called tv drive then and now have a v+.And i have been promised since then HD channels were coming,So personally will believe it when i see it.VM are full of fall promises and constantly never delivering,I personally think VOD is crap and believe if it had to be paid for no one would use it.I just hope VM hurry up and deliver the HD Channels,Because 1 day Sky will relise and scrap the £10 charge as they did with the Sky+ and the flood gates will open and i personally will then jump ship.

Regards the H/D channels that VM have been promising, I called them recently about this, and they told me that they have 4 coming soon. Its all to do with band width they said, and that most of this has been taken up with broadband internet? Like the other poster mentioned, I was on the point of leaving VM as well, but will wait to see the outcome of these new channels.
Cheers, Smudger.

BSkyB launches high-definition TV push

Any hope that Virgin will step up their move to bring new HD channels to us?

BSkyB launches high-definition TV push
-------------------------------------
FT January 28 2009: BSkyB is slashing the price of its high definition set-top TV box in a bid to take advantage of the “significant opportunity” emerging in HD, as it reported interim results ahead of expectations.

The broadcaster said on Wednesday it was cutting the sale of its Sky+HD box from £150 to £49 in an effort to capitalise on a growing appetite for high definition products.

“Following a sharp increase in demand during 2008, we now see an attractive opportunity to invest in further accelerating the take-up of Sky+HD,” BSkyB said.......

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

according to this link

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=980740

Sky only have about 700,000 HD subscribers which is very little take up at all so you can see why VM aren't exactly throwing money at HD.

Maybe if VM could market the V+ and it's upscaling better they could get more subscribers and then they might be able to go into the HD market further

the point is virgin dont need to add them, of the hd channels i say 4 or 5 are true hd channels and even then there aint much content on them that is true hd for the others, the hd picture quailty is only seen by a minority who can tell the difference majority of people cant. if you hd that much why want sky not move since tv is obviously your primary concern

If vm got discovery and nat geo they are both full time channels where everything shown is hd,for those that cant tell the difference with hd then need their eyes testing or their tv setting properly my sis in law came up a few weeks ago and she is no expert and she could see the difference straight away.

Not wanting to get into an arguement but my first sentence says it all i.e. trees blocking signal from satellites. And I'm not cutting the trees down.

Also what is so wrong in wanting Sky to have some competition and for Virgin to look to the future?

Plus I like my cable broadband connection.

The tree's must be very close as the signal from the satellite actually comes down at quite a steep angle.

BBC's Match of the Day future has been safeguarded until the end of the 2013 football season after the BBC extended its Premier League highlights deal.

The deal allows BBC to continue to show Match of the Day on Saturday and Sunday and MOTD2 on Sunday evenings - and on other evenings when there are midweek fixtures.

It will also allow MOTD2, which goes out on Sundays, to be available on BBC iPlayer for the first time. MOTD2 will be available online on Tuesdays from 2010.

Sky have 15 100% owned HD channels. It's just the urban myth that's been going round for some time that we'll get these in 2009. It's complete fantasy imho. Virgin actually said "three or four". There was someone on DS that said Virgin would be launching some HD channels of their own, I find this very fanciful.

They are so slow, l read on DS, that Sky are planning on a separate EPG for a host oo new HD channels coming to Sky, put it this way, on the remote for VM you have TEXT BUTTON, but you can't get text.:)

By the way I asked a question a while back that was never answered, any chance Pulse TV may appear on Virgin Media in the near future?

something I have noticed and didn't see mentioned is the iplayer seems to have been expanded. Instead of just having the last 7 days it now has a series option which shows all the episodes from a series

New ITV regional news programme launch dates.

ITV1 London, ITV1 Granada and ITV1 Wales regional services as well as STV and UTV will be unaffected by the new look ITV1 that relaunch in February 2009:

As part of the shake-up ITV plans to merge its West and Westcountry news shows - but the new programme would include short, recorded sections containing additional local content. The same is planned for the Border and Tyne Tees regions as well as the East and West Midlands and the Meridian and Thames Valley areas.

New ITV1 Local services will be called:

From
9th. Meridian Tonight
12th. Anglia Tonight
16th. West/Westcountry
19th. Calendar
23rd. Central
26th. Border/Tyne Tees

Info from BBC Online and DS Forums.

Changes can happen any day, but boxes get updates on Wednesdays so that's VM's favourite day for launching new things.

I know SKy & VM have buried the hatchet but

I am a great fan of the Red Button - any chance of getting on VM soon :-

1. Red Button BBC News multi-channels

2. Red Button Sky News multi channels

3. Red Button - Sky Sports - stats especially the Cricket Stats ( with Ashes coming up !)

4. Red Button extra matches when Sky Sports is overlaoded - I missed some of the cricket recently when it was on Red Button - but mine on my V+ box didn't do anything

I'll echo that. It's the one reason I no longer subscribe to $ky Sports. Two of my mates are exactly the same.
I wonder how long it will take for $ky to realise that is harming them every bit as much as it's harming VM.

it's more to do with OFCOM who don't treat these services as a proper channel and don't force Sky to give them to other providors

Sky could volunteer it. They do lose income by not. ;)

Not sure that is true though. They probably get more prople going onto Sky due to lack of red button and missing matches etc than they do by offering it to VM. With red button being exclusive to Sky it makes them more attractive, same as them keeping HD channels to Sky they get more people going to Sky for HD than they would if they offered the channels to Freesat or VM

You're right about the HD and you're right about the red button being an attractive additional favour. I can only go by personal experience and that isn't always an accurate indicator.

Although I would use the red button feature occasionally, it isn't a big enough attraction on it's own to make me want to return to Sky. At least 2 of my mates are the same. All 3 of us no longer have Sky sports as Setanta and match of the day provides us with as much football as we need.

The reason we ditched it was simply because we couldn't see the Scottish teams in the Champions league because of the lack of red button.

This may be a mainly Scottish thing so I suppose the decision not to share the red button may generate more money overall :(

To be fair to OFCOM in their more recent report on this they have noted this and I think they are proposing to force sky to make both the HD and the red button content available at a 'reasonable' price. Its just annoying its taking so long to get to the point where this is agreed (probably due to sky filibustering?). If we do get a deal for the HD and red button channels before then it not be because sky particularly want to do the deal but that they see the sword of ofcom setting the price hanging over them.

BBC HD to show Dr. Who.

V+ viewers will be happy to hear that Doctor Who is going high definition this year.

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out tomorrow, reveals that the show will be made and broadcast in HD during 2009, according to posters on the Doctor Who Forum website.

Four feature-length specials starring David Tennant will air in 2009 - one at Easter, the others on and around Christmas - before Matt Smith takes over as the Eleventh Doctor in 2010.

Info from my V+ Box.

I don't watch Trouble much but I must admit I'm surprised that they have dropped Trouble +1 in favour of Living2 +1 on Virgin Media and on Sky. Both channels are owned by VM.

I presume that Living2 +1 will move to channel 113 on VM to be with it siblings (maybe by 08:00 today). It's still greyed out on channel 160 on my V Box.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it is my understanding that all analogue signals these days, terrestrial or cable, are sourced from the digital signals so an analogue signal could still be provided after the official analogue cutoff. However, I don't see this happening after 2012 on terrestrial and probably not from 2010 on Virgin Media cable. On terrestrial, the frequencies used to broadcast analogue TV will have been reallocated to digital TV and other services. On cable, the bandwidth used for analogue will have been reallocated to digital TV, TVoD, Interactive and Broadband. What will happen in areas with old, expensive to upgrade equipment is uncertain.

Check out the viewing figures on the BARB website, and you'll see it makes a lot of sense. Living2 is nearly 5 times as popular as Trouble.

Off topic - apologies.

You know what they say - when America sneezes, everyone catches cold. Many, if not most, Americans are very parochial, including George W. Bush, and don't know what goes on outside their own village let alone their own country. This is very dangerous. We can't afford to ignore what happens in other countries especially one as influential as the United States. Remember Germany in the 1930s, Rwanda and, more recently, the former Yugoslavia?

Anyway, so much of our TV, and hence our language and culture, comes from the US these days, we can't help noticing what is happening over there.

Back on topic - barely!;)

Thanks, that's interesting reading. Where do these viewing figures come from? Nobody ever asks me what I watch so it must be based on a cross section of the viewing public.

Please all, don't reply with paranoid theories about VM knowing what we watch from the STB and targeting hearing aid advertising at us based on the volume setting on the remote.:(
