You are kidding right ???, the SKY HD Box is miles better than NTL's and as far as I know has more HD Content than NTL's does as well.
Not just my word for it if you do a search on these forums you will see not only the picture quality but the useability of it also.

Can the Sky HD Box record two programs whilst watching a third?

Content has nothing to do with the quality of the box from a technical standpoint.

Agreed, it's completely separate.

I'd love to know what pictures he was talking about that shows this dwarf in picture quality when viewing HD content on both, and both have HD TV sets.

Fact: The Sky HD box is not miles better than Virgin's.

Sky Channels on Virgin Media Latest:

An incrasingly row could see BSkyB pull some of their Channels from Virgin Media next week, depriving cable viewers of hit series such as 'Lost' and '24'. The wrangle, which could see Sky One, Sky Sports News, Sky Travel and Sky News all removed from the cable firm, which was launched on Thursday by NTL Telewest.

BSkyB and Virgin Media have been locked in negatiations over the amount each pays to carry the other's TV Channels. Talks over whether Virgin Media will carry the Sky channels have a deadline of the end of the month. BSkyB is understood to be offering extra channels to Virgin Media, including Artsworld [Soon to be Sky Arts ] and Sky Three, as a package along with its basic channels. A Virgin Media source said: 'This is a totally economic decision for us. The negotiations are going right down to the wire.'

Info from The Mail on Sunday.

Well it won't be next week then, not if the contract is to the end of the month, i'm sure they'll come to some agreement, the last thing richard branson wants is to lose sky one, all my fav shows are on that channel and yes I know I can download them but we watch them as a family, not just me so if sky goes i'd have to go but i expect the opposite will happen and we will get more channels and one other thing, you got this information from the mail, not exactly the most reliable of souces

Re: Virgin Media News

I would imagine if Sky do throw there dummy out of the pram. Pull these channels virgin media would copy and will pull there channels from SKY.

SKY will end up the bigger losers as although SKY ONE is popular. I would think SKY would get loads of complaints if they lost the popular UK tv franchise channels like GOLD, LIVING etc. Would SKY subscribers stick with an americanisation product for general entertainment. I doubt it. The only thing SKY would have is there football. Frankly the bubble going to burst with the poor standards of premiership football on offer. Gates are down at grounds already and people will start to switch off.

In the end SKY would have to be climb down as they cannot rely on a sole product to entice keep UK customers. Long term SKY will lose there appeal as there system is weaker system than cable. A dish can be knocked out of line and eliments interfere with signals. Then in time SKY will have to replace there satalite.

Cable in long term has them over a barrel in terms what they can provide in inovision what sky cannot. You only can see SKY dominance shrink further. I see the only future for them is to provide channels for others. The dish will die a slow painful death.

I doubt we'll see Sky One being pulled, there would be an uproar!

Most of what I watch is on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Sky One and E4... so without Sky One I'd probably get Top-up TV or wait to see if Sky One will be Skys DTT offering.

Re: Virgin Media News

Here is the SKY VS Virgin Media:

Quote:

Sky turns up heat on Virgin

Info from Media Guardian.

BSkyB has raised the stakes in its battle with Virgin Media by taking out ads asking cable customers to take on their suppliers.

Sky launched the adverts on channels such as Sky One last night telling customers of Virgin Media - renamed from NTL last week - that Sky's basic channels could be withdrawn from the cable system if Virgin Media did not pay a "fair price for them".

Customers were told to call Virgin Media's customer service line to lobby against any withdrawal.

The move "completely shocked" Virgin Media, which had no idea the adverts were being planned. One Virgin Media insider described the move as "bizarre".

Sky and Virgin Media are locked in negotiations over the cost of carrying each other's channels. These tense talks come on top of Virgin's complaints to regulators after Sky effectively blocked the cable company's takeover bid for ITV.

Sky was able to air the adverts without Virgin Media's permission as it inserted them into the feed it gives to the cable firm.

A Sky spokesman defended the move, saying the company wanted to give Virgin Media customers the chance to lobby against any withdrawal of its basic channels, which as well as Sky One include Sky Two and Three, Sky News, Sky Sports News, Artsworld and Sky Travel.

"It is a call to action on behalf of Virgin Media customers," the spokesman said. "We need to build up some support. We feel these channels are valuable to Virgin Media customers and we have invested a lot of money in them. We need to instal in viewers the danger of them potentially being pulled.

"We feel an obligation to let cable customers know there is a very real danger these channels could be pulled."
The spokesman added there was no fixed timescale for how long the adverts would run.

Negotiations on the new carriage deal are expected to be completed within the new few weeks.

Sky said it was requesting a "fair price" from Virgin Media which "reflects the proposed new terms and considerable value of its basic channels". A Virgin Media spokeswoman said the company did not comment on negotiations as they were confidential. But she added: "We are negotiating in good faith to ensure these channels are available to Virgin Media customers. We have no idea why Sky are saying we are doubting the value of these channels."
---------- Post added at 15:06 ---------- Previous post was at 14:12 ----------

There's now a pre-recorded message on the customer services number, saying along the lines of:

"If you're calling regarding the Sky advert about the potential loss of certain Sky channels, please be advised that negotiations with Sky to retain these channels are continuing. We have made no threat to drop these channels. A brand new channel, Virgin Central, featuring top drama from Britain and the US, launches next week on channel 119."

BSkyB bullish about NTL threat

I found this on The Guardian web site from Wednesday January 31, 2007.

The BSkyB chief executive, James Murdoch, shrugged off the threat posed by the rebrand of rival NTL as Virgin Media, saying the satellite broadcaster offers better quality and better prices than cable can muster.

Virgin Media will launch - presumably accompanied by one of Sir Richard Branson's trademark stunts - next Thursday.

Speaking after Sky announced a mixed set of half-year results, James Murdoch said:

Quote:

"I think there will be a huge amount of noise ... but basically customers are pretty smart and when you look at what we are doing in the market place today ... you can get [from us] a dramatically better quality TV, broadband and telephony experience than you can from Virgin."
"We are very confident that the product we have is of better quality, in terms of TV and broadband and telephony,"
he added, stressing that Sky is also currently the only high definition TV broadcaster in the UK.

The BSkyB chief financial officer, Jeremy Darroch, was rather more blunt:
Quote:

"The bottom line is we don't think a name change affects the fundamental issues they [Virgin Media] still have around product development, customer service and pricing flexibility and we think customers will see that."

Sounds like SKY stuck up in its own ego. They are really in for a shock to the system. I still maintain in 10 years SKY will be down to possible 3-4 million customers who are hardcore satalite enthusiasts. Maybe murdock knows this hence trying to mussle into getting sky through an aerial. satellite technology has too many flaws and will be needing upgrades at staggering costs. God knows how old astra system is and the costs to put a new one up. I really believe SKY realising issues with there technology and looking at ways to move from Satelite. Maybe in a quirky twist in the future SKY will want to hire cable bandwidth from virgin media to pipe to its customers. Just end up being a production company.

Still open! lol

I seen a Virgin Media Bus today also! Double Decker!

I think it has lost its meaning, but I also think a quick GoogleNews search would suffice. Maybe even report that in here, as it is news.

Re: Virgin Media News

ITV "is no longer fully independent" due to Sky's purchase of a 17.9% stake in the broadcaster, the Office of Fair Trading has advised the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

The OFT has also said that Sky's acquisition should be referred to the Competition Commission on the basis that "a relevant merger situation has been created";

"this situation has resulted, or may be expected to result, in a substantial lessening of competition within a market or markets in the UK";

and "clear cut remedies sufficient to resolve the OFT's competition concerns were not offered".The regulator further believes that Sky has the ability to "materially to influence the policy" of ITV.

"We have been asked by the Secretary of State to report on the competition issues raised by this transaction," said OFT chief executive John Fingleton.

"We have concluded that this partial ownership link between two key players raises significant competition concerns. Sky's shareholding means that ITV is no longer fully independent, and this may alter the future competitive landscape, especially as we approach digital switchover. Given the high stakes for tens of millions of UK consumers, we believe these risks to competition merit further examination."

Thought Id just point out that Virgin Media has been given a B+ in the Company Stability Charts, which means Stable.

Sky are BBB+ which is also Stable, but as more news comes out that Virgin customers "arent happy" or are churning customers "due to Sky channles" or "telephony errors" the company is still firmly on its feet.

Nice to see every Cloud has a silver lining.

Louise Benham is to leave Virgin Media Television next month after nine years. Prior to her role as controller of the Challenge and Trouble, Benham was managing editor of Living TV, Living TV2 and FTN. Benham told Broadcast: "After nearly nine happy years working at Flextech, now Virgin Media Television, I feel the time has come to explore new opportunities. I've had a fantastic time working on some great channel brands and am looking forward to fresh challenges ahead." Earlier this month, Living director of programming Claudia Rosencrantz was made director of television at the company, reporting into managing director Jonathan Webb.

Virgin Media hopes for TV subs growth Virgin Media has moved to reassure the City by reporting that it hopes to return better-than-expected TV subscriber growth for the second quarter of 2007, following strong performances in April and May. Mediocre first quarter results led the cable giant to forecast negative TV subscriber growth in the second quarter as it counted the cost of the withdrawal of BSkyB's basic channels from its platform. However, in a statement this morning (8 June) Virgin Media said it has "benefited from reinvigorated communications and marketing, growing customer recognition of the value of our video-on-demand content and the inherent appeal of the new Virgin Media brand". £5bn debt is a bloody hefty amount! What the bloody hell have they been doing?!

They need to sort this out... We need some money pumping into this Company.

We have half the Customers Sky has, yet Sky has a Credit!

And aquisitions of more companies is ADDING to the debt!
