Could be worse - you could have the STB automatically switching to one of the inane shopping channels....

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Funnily enough - got up this morning, and the PACE STB had switched to channel 7 again, although it was left on Channel 1.
I have two boxes, and one is a Samsung. I don't get the problem on the Samsung box.

Begize 11-09-2005 14:19

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Ours is still doing it. Yesterday morning it switched to one of the shopping channels on it's own (8xx something I think) then later in the afternoon, I was watching Sky Sports (40) and pressed up, it changed to channel 50 instead of 41. Going up and down from there picked channels either side of 50 in my faves list.

Switched back to 40 and again, an hour or so later pressed up and got channel 50 again. This time pressing up and down got the channels either side of 40.... weird.

Yesterday evening the old "sticking" channels happened again, pressing up did nothing for about 10 seconds and then it changed channel. It then began to do stuff on it's own for a minute or so, now and next popped up randomly, as did info. I hadn't pressed any buttons, merely tried to switch from BBC1 to ITV.

I don't think this problem is fixed.

did it again tonight, was up watching late TV (sky mix) due to not feeling well and channel changed back to No7 at round 5.00am, so presume still a ongoing situation with no fix yet?

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Woke up this morning with a mixed page showing ITV3 over which was the "You are not subscribed to this channel" image. So I rebooted the STB.
Now I get the message saying that there are no channels available..

I've rebooted four times now.
About to give CS a second call.
Funnily enough - two STB in the house, one is PACE, the other Samsung. The Samsung is causing the problems - the PACE is fine...

I had to call CS yesterday as the whole network went down for the day in parts of Leeds. mentioned the Channel change issue and CS advised me that the technical team had stated the problem was resolved last Friday as expected. CS are to record any further complaints of Channel change as a new issue. They are also sending refreshes to the STB as well at time of complaint incase the STB has missed an update.

I'll wait to see if the problem recurs here.

Andy

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Latest - CS say there is an unknown problem with some STB losing the channels. It's hoped that the problem wil be fixed by 2pm...
Looks like Samsung have been affected not PACE...

nbubba 14-09-2005 08:24

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I've been following this thread because I've had the same issue although it hasn't affected me too much; most times I would switch the TV on the next day and discover that overnight it had shifted from whatever I was last watching to channel 7.

However, it did affect me Monday night because I recorded the NFL live game on Channel 5 from 00:40 till 06:00 ... of course, what I got to see last night instead was everything up until the end of the second quarter followed by two and a half hours of adverts for Lemony Snicket. Not happy about this at all.

If this is a known software issue that has been introduced recently and is being investigated then - here's an idea for a company in the service industry - why not rollback the software to a version that doesn't do this and thereby service the customers who are getting upset?

Re: STB changing channels on its own

So, from what I'm reading in these last few posts do NTL reckon they've fixed it, but it is still happening?

Happened to me at 4:30pm yesterday
Samsung Box - on E4 at the time. Picture froze then about 20/25 minutes later switched to Front Row

Is it worth calling CS - haven't bothered before as it's a known issue, but if it's still happening...

It must be a fortnight since it has happened to me thankfully.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Is there some kind of equivalent Bird Flu Virus going around affecting these PACE STB's?? My channels keep going out of sequence every now and again, and it freezes too. Still waiting for a Samsung Replacement.

Begize 17-09-2005 18:17

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Well, this is getting weirder. The box changed to channel 0 during the night in the week, it had been on Sky Mix which I don't think stops during the night, and even if it does, it should switch to 7 yes?

We've also still got the button delay thing. Last night it was a good 10 seconds between pressing up and it actually changing up which a reboot wouldn't fix. Went on for a good few minutes around 9pm ish. The interactive is also worse than useless at the moment - everytime you press the button it either says "please wait" and nothing happens or displays the first page then freezes and needs a reboot.

I think another call might be in order

Re: STB changing channels on its own

STILL HAPPENING! What a load of crap!

8PM E4+1 (145) on a Samsung box. Freezes after about a second or two then switches to Front Row.

Can anyone suggest anything I can do other than waiting forever for NTL to MAYBE fix this?

Sorry to get irrate. I know this is no one on this boards fault, it's just ****ing me off majorly when it's screwing up stuff I'm trying to record.

Begize 21-09-2005 04:11

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Ours changed channel overnight again - was watching C4 before bedtime on Monday night, got up to find it on 7 again. Box still having problems changing channels too although it has got better and only does it sporadically. Interactive did actually work for the first time in days on Sunday morning but was so slow I gave up and used Ceefax to find what I wanted instead.

Does anyone know if there is a still a known problem or is it just me?

I would ring CS and possibly book and engineer but we are going away next Tuesday morning for a week and I really haven't got the time to spend Saturday sitting around on the off chance one might turn up (bearing in mind the last two didn't).

No, its not just you. Most mornings I get up and its magically changed to channel 7. I also have some problems with it being slow to change channel, and the 'receive' light on the STB locking on for a few seconds.

2 things...have you reported this to ntl and asked for an engineer visit if not (sorry for being to the point but) stop moaning, but if you have get them back and demand them to get it sorted there and then.

Shabba 22-09-2005 12:20

Re: STB changing channels on its own

After years of the box freezing on interactive, having to un plug the box when the internet service screws up, taking upto 40 seconds to change channels, the constant resseting to channel 7 and (lately) all the BBC channels displaying press red at random i think i've sorted the problem!

Phoned up and cancelled my tv services in favour of a rock steady freeview service. They are (supposedly) dropping off a sacm and picking up the stb on the 20'th October. I should also add that the internet service is being repriced at £9.99 a month for the next twelve months without us even asking about the prices and we were never passed to retentions when we mentioned all our problems (despite others claiming it)?

Oh well ... another ex c&w customer signing off!

Maybe i should have said rock steadier. Both my freeview boxes (Goodmans GD3 & Sagem TD58) can hold the 7 day epg, can switch channels, neither suffer from loss of synch concerning sound and the picture quality is (i'll say it again) rock steady. If you equate pace stb's and freeview ones, then (imo) there is reason to call modern freeview boxes rock steady.

Living tv is only watched for one program - most haunted live? It now shows that program on ftn (on freeview). I will miss sky for the sci-fi stuff it premieres but since the introduction of torrents, i don't think i'll miss it that much ;)

Ahh. Fair enough.

This morning it's now skipping channels when you change. Pressing up from 1 took me to 8 when normally it's 2. Changing back to 1 again and it's correct....

I think once we're back from holiday I'll get on the phone and moan!

yeah but its not the same Ntl for all its faults is better value for money than top up tv and is the most hunted live acctually shown live (shock derek is leaveing how are all the camp scouse ghosts called edward or mary going to talk to the living) and the horror channel is comming eventually

I'm getting the channel 7 overnight change now, every night since the new channels briefly appeared -I never suffered with it before, what a crap service NTL is, can they get anything right ?

I guess thats overnight recording out the window then - what exactly does work correctly :(

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I got my Pace box replaced with a Samsung in the hope that it would stop channels from freezing. It worked. then on Monday this week an upgrade took place which replaced the pink menus with blue ones. Since then it has taken to randomly changing channels. I rang Ntl who think it aright be a universal remote or my lightbulbs! I think there must be someone at rtl who is sabotaging things (maybe they work for Sky). I refuse to believe that there one so many issues by accident. It's gettinga regular conversation at home now- ''Dad, can we get Sky?''

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I've got a pace that likes to change channels for approx 20 secs at 12.10 am every single booming night!

Re: STB changing channels on its own

What the heck is going on.. My Samsung box has started to change channels now on its own accord.

I put the box on standby last night, woke up this morning and it had changed from channel 1 to channel 3, and go into interactive.

Is it the boxes that are faulty or a problem at NTL's end??

quadplay 13-10-2005 10:50

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Gone into Interactive!? Now that is odd!

Do you have the Purple or Blue EPG? Anything generating spurious IR such as plasma/LCD TV, energy saving lightbulbs, etc.? Have you checked the batteries in your remote?

scoobydoo[uk] 14-10-2005 17:16

Re: STB changing channels on its own

It may be my wireless keyboard mouse thats causing a problem but it shouldnt be as its hidden away underneath the chair, im using the blue EPG.
I have checked and changed the batteries in the remote.
This morning when I woke up it had gone in the tv guide!.

quadplay 14-10-2005 17:32

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Any chance you've got an animal (dog, cat, hamster, whatever!) that could have sat on the remote?

littld 18-10-2005 23:20

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Finally got it sorted. My Samsung stb kept changing channels etc since the (blue menus) upgrade. I tried taking out the remote batteries, lightbulbs etc to no avail.

Called ntl last week, they sent some signals to the box. Still same problem.

Called again last night. This morning the engineer came and replaced the stb altogether. Bit of a pain sorting all the channels again and getting broadband working, but Hey - I can change the channels myself without having a "ghost in the machine." Seems to have fixed a few other problems as well - it's much more responsive, for example.

Strongly recommend anyone with channel hopping problems to get the box replaced.

Finally, hats off to ntl for getting an engineer to me so quickly. Very, very good customer service on this occassion.

littld 14-11-2005 10:28

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Oh dear, the problem came back again.

I don't think I want to get the box replaced with another Samsung.

If I ask nicely do you think ntl will let me have a Pace box again?

I am really bored of this box changing channels by itself.

btw, I think I know why it does it since the upgrade. A new feature means that just pressing the arrow keys brings up the mini-guide. Normally any odd arrow keypresses would have been ignored. Now they bring up the guide. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch this new feature off.

Ideas anyone please?

richgm 14-11-2005 11:37

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Change the Batteries in your TV Remote.
For some reason my cable box develops a mind of it's own when me TV remote needs new batteries. Mini guide pops on and off channels change when they want etc...etc....
Even if I haven't used the tv remote for some time it still happens.

littld,

Do you by any chance use Digisender?

I had the same problem and found that it does not do it if I turn off the Digisender box. There was another thread where someone had this problem. I now only turn on the Digisender when I want to watch TV in bed (and put up with the annoying channel changing). I'm hoping that someone will find a cure as it is a real pain.

Wow - I do use a DigiSender. I will try what you suggest and see what happens.

The funny thing is it has only happened since the recent "blue" menu upgrade. It did not do it at all before that.

;) Thanks for posting the suggestion. I'll try it for a week and see how it goes.
