We seem to have a tie for first place, and neither of them tripped a booby trap, so here's a tie break question *ONLY* for MetaWraith and Bifta - first right answer gets the winââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¦

TIE BREAK - What was the name of the stone that Jean-FranÃÃâ€*’§ois Champollion deciphered that helped discover the meanings of Egyptian Hieroglyphs?

Rosetta stone?

gazzae did get in first with his "throwing your hat at the ball" answer which is why he got the bonus, but I was looking for "ball striking a helmet left on the field" which AFAICS is the only one that's mandatory.

Fairy Nuff but you didn't ask for the only mandatory reason. Gazzae should get the point then rather than a bonus point as he gave a correct valid answer. :)

In any quiz show its the answer on the quiz masters answer sheet that we need to guess. Any others accepted are discretionary. Heck we did well in that Graham was willing to do a search during the quiz and found other possibilities and awarded a bonus point.

The quiz master should ensure that his questions are worded in such a way that the only possible answer is the answer he has got on his sheet. There have been many instances of quiz shows on TV where a contestant has been brought back because they gave a different answer to the one on the quiz masters sheet but it was later found that their answer was also correct. An answer is either right or wrong, not right but not what I am looking for.

Re: The Real Friday Quiz

EEK, didn't mean to cause an argument.

I looked up more info, what Graham said is right, only the ball hitting the wicket keepers helmet, while it is left on the ground, is a mandatory five penalty extras. With the others the umpire has the ability to award a five run penalty against them but he uses this at his discretion.

The orginal question:

So, we work backwards to find the answer.

We've heard about 5 different answers to this all of which could result in the batting side being awarded 5 extras off one ball. But Graham asked what "must" happen.

If we work backwards from the result, the only thing which could have happened which would definitely result in the 5 extras would be the ball hitting the keppers hemlmet (I'll say it again :Yikes: ), as that's the only certain event that leads to the result it must be the event in question otherwise we can't say that it must have happened.

Ergo, there is only one possible answer to that question, given the way that it was phrased.

Now.....if the question had been:

"What could happen in a game of cricket cricket for the batting side to be awarded 5 extras off of one ball"

.....

The word "must" implies that it is the "only" way which is obviously not the case. In the case of the only 5 extras in a match being the award of 5 penalty extras for something like tampering with the ball then it is obvious that the use of the word "must" is wrong. Whether you word the question with "must", "could", "can" or whatever you end up with a list of possibilities all of which are equally correct.

To be guaranteed that the only correct answer was the one that Graham thought it could be would be to ask the question
Quote:

What must happen in a game of cricket for the batting side to be guaranteed the award of 5 extras off one ball?
Thinking about it a bit more the only correct answer to the question asked as it was would be "any one of the following things must have happened" followed by a list of ALL the possibilities. Only giving one of the reasons or part of the reasons means you cannot use the qualifying "must".

I would point out that I very much *do* attempt to ensure this!

Especially if I'm putting in "booby trap" questions I look carefully at the wording to make certain that the "trap" goes off properly (eg the "how many *fighting* men did a Roman Centurion command" question)

The fact that I was willing to check and award a bonus point because someone picked up something I missed shows that I'm not going to be bloody minded and insist on *only* what I've got "on the sheet" as the right answer.

I'd be interested to see where you get this "many" from.

Even if I were inclined to change the result on that question, it's not going to make a difference to the final result and, as I said, gazzae did get in first which is why I gave him the bonus.

There was, of course, the situation on University Challenge where one of the team members took Jeremy Paxton to task on a Picture Round because the picture was the Oak Leaf emblem of the National Trust but he had asked "What is it?" to which she replied "It's an oak leaf" which was correct according to what he'd asked, but not in the context of the question.

Err, hello? Sorry I was dealing with messages in other threads!

I think it's a bit short notice for a quiz now, you could run it eg tomorrow or save it for the next time you need one.

But who will be organising it?It should be Bifta but...

I think we need a REGULAR quizmaster. This leaving it to the winner of the last quiz is too hit and miss. It's something that we've got it on Fridays but we need someone to commit to it properly.

Just my :2cents:

Not me. I still don't have enough questions to run a worthwhile quiz.

And that would be the problem with being a "regular quiz master", in that I can usually come up with enough questions to run it on alternate weeks, but one a week wouldn't be possible (and frankly I'm amazed that Nemesis ever managed this unless there was a well thumbed quiz question book somewhere in the background!)

Personally I like the "last winner sets the quiz" because it allows for variety in style and question types.

Yes but that method means we have missed a quiz two weeks running..and now I suspect that unless someone volunteers we will have no quiz next week.

I suppose there still is a chance that Bifta might do one next Friday (or at some other day of the week if that suits him better). I got the impression last week that he did have a quiz, but didn't have the time to run it.

I don't know where you got that impression, I don't have a quiz and I don't have time to run one and whoever came up with the stupid idea of the previous winner running the following weeks quiz needs stringing up. I say the winner should (as a reward for winning) be able to choose who he wants to land the thankless task on.
