We got the booklet last week and we got our update last night. We're in Rickmansworth near Watford and got a Samsung box. I definitely prefer the new blue colour...

Re: Bromley upgrade starting....

Well, my box went blue a week or two back. It seems to have fixed the freezing / random changing of channel to Front Row issue. Yay!

Although, it's buggered up my TiVo on channel changing. It can pretty much never change to the right channel now. I suppose it's easy to assume this is a TiVo fault, but when my TiVo had been working fine till this upgrade, it's a bit of a coincedence.... Really worth it just so my NTL remote (which I keep in a drawer and never use) can change the volume on my TV.

Anyone know a good deal on Sky?

Martin 05-10-2005 12:24

Is that on a Samsung box? That's what I've got, and I've seen a lot of people reporting similar issues on the TiVo Community forums - http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...1&page=2&pp=30

Nope, Pace1000 box!

Re: Bromley upgrade starting....

That'll be why then. It's the Samsung boxes that are having the problem, but I need that for my 2Meg. Some people are saying it's possible to get a stand-alone modem as well as the TV box, but it requires a bit of tea and biscuit style bribery.

Watford got the download today, didnt even need a reboot, on both Samsung STB's.

Much better although the STB's volume cannot be controlled on the Samsung boxes.

Yes it can. You need to make sure your SCART cable is connected to the TV output (the bottom one) rather than the VCR output. Also, the volume control does not affect the RF output.

You should be able to get a seperate cable modem if you give c/s a ring!

Checked the scart leads on both STB's both are connected to the TV output, neither STB is connected via RF.

It should work - it does on all the Samsung boxes round here... Does Mute work on the remote? What if you press the Left (<) and Right (>) buttons on the front of the STB?

If the remote is the most recent model, that won't do anything, as the settings are stored on EPROM.

I think the default code is 0000, so go through the settings process using that code, and it should control the box again.

I Know how you feel, I find it frustrating that all these people are saying how great it is better faster etc. Correct me if I'm wrong but if we are all paying the same are we not entitled to the same service at the same time, not an inferior service for two months longer than the first upgrade. Should we not be entitled to a reduction for not getting the service other people are. I think 80 quid is a lot of money for a service that is below the standard other people have.

The software isn't rolled out nationwide concurrently to prevent a massive number of calls into the Customer Service Centres with queries, or the Faults Management Centres should something go wrong.

As for a reduction... Pfft!

Also Since the update don't spose anyone with Broadband running through their STB has noticed any regular dropping of the connection?

Ah Right, I'm Baguley here. :)

Thing is they won't do the whole of Manchester at once as its so massive.

Doing it in increments means that if anything goes wrong they can sort things quickly, plus I don't think NTL wants one of their biggest franchises in the the UK to go **** over tit. lol

OK - I'm in the Bromley area and every night for the past week the TV has flickeerd, we get fancy new blue info screens for a few seconds, the screen flickers again and we are back to purple. No amount of resetting makes any difference. Are these failed upgrades (I'm on the Sansung box) or is NTL just teasing me?

Check your SCART leads are plugged in properly.

It can't flicker between the old & new software. Either you have the new software or you don't.

They were supposed to change faster, but for some odd reason they ended up changing slower!
It's being looked into by the ntl software development team.

Anyone know when (or if) NTL are planning to correct the problem the new software causes with Tivos (can't change to a channel with repeated digits, eg, E4)?

Re: Bromley upgrade starting....

There are a number of guys here who have TiVos, so we do know about it, but since most of us are on Langley it's not quite as high priority as it might be! You'll just have to wait for the NTLTVPVR (which sounds like a bad hand at Scrabble) which is *ahem* Coming Soon! ;)

Your best bet, I've found, is to use one of the Pace Slow codes, and position just one of the the IR blasters directly in front of the STB, about an inch away from the LED display. Hide the other blaster behind the TV or something. Even then, I find the keypresses aren't 100%...

Been updated here this morning in East Manchester, first impressions very good (took a few seconds instead of a few minutes to get into the EPG so may actually be usable now!) Is that Surrey - as in Aldershot, Hampshire Surrey - Weybridge, Walton, Addlestone, or even Surrey - Guildford
ntl seem to have some odd geography :D

If Addlestone, it would explain why my EPG was even more useless than normal last night. At least ntl have now sent me "the essential handbook for your new improved Digital TV service", so it must at long last be "coming soon" :D :tu:

It's not Guildford - that's Langley - it's Franchise 465, which is officially "North & North-East Surrey" and includes Hersham, Addlestone, Leatherhead and Reigate hubs. If you reboot your box, you should get BU2. :)

:( Isn't there a way to completely wipe or reset the memory somehow? It doesn't actually melt hardware does it?

quadplay 12-10-2005 13:59

Re: Bromley upgrade starting....

There is, but it requires taking the box apart. It isn't a case of hardware melting as such - certainly not literally - but any number of things can cause a box to stop responding.

Still, at least you'll have a shiny new one tomorrow... :)

Is there any news on when we can expect a speed increase cause it's starting to get a little irritating trying to change to a specific channel & getting something else entirely because it's so slow.

For example I was on BBC1 last night & wanted to change to channel 30 (Sky1), I hit 3 then 0 & instead of getting channel 30 I got ITV1 (3) then channel 0, this happened 3 times then it got the idea I wanted channel 30 & gave me it.

If you get broadband via your STB, then it will be briefly interrupted (for maybe a couple of minutes) as the box updates itself, but that's it.

Not that I've noticed, but then I have a Samsung.

I didn't get the update on my STB, until I manually rebooted it (it's usually left on, rather than in standby). The Samsung crashed on the first reboot, but then loaded up just fine the second time.

Not quite sure about the new colour scheme. Somehow I'd got used to that lovely shade of purple :dozey:

I like the colour scheme, but dislike the design of the miniguide. I mean, it doesn't actually need that text on there, does it? It could so with some borders, too. And it doesn't need to stretch across the screen.

Maybe the next software version will have a redesigned miniguide to keep me happy...

Essex, got it this morning too

Disconcerting that there's no progress spinner when going in to Interactive etc., but then, the spinner could twirl away for ever more with nothing happening.

Not had any proper BBCi for it to crash on yet, so no idea if the red button is any more stable in this release.

The Interactive pages are just a special kind of HTML, retrieved from a server. They'll be updated later.
