Re: The Cable Forum Exit Poll

Just to point out to those watching TV (we're flicking between the channels) that the results on ITV are NOT confirmed. There just the results that their correspondents believe to be correct.

Apparently (and ITV seem to not be telling the viewers this) their correspondents are going around asking the candidates if they think they've won and then reporting this to ITV. Shabby journalism if you ask me, nothing on screen to tell anyone that they aren't the official results. They should have saved their money and just put up the the number of safe seats on the screen!!!

Quote:

The other tactic ITV are using is to ask their correspondents to phone in when they reckon they know who has won, rather than give the full results. BBC and Sky may be holding back to get the results in detail, so that may make the difference.

Hmm, well my mother lives in the area concerned, and despite her phoning a number of times over the preceeding fortnight saying she would be on holiday (a classic case for the postal vote if there ever was), the papers never arrived. She wanted to vote, was entitled to vote by the legislation, yet has been disenfranchished.

If this is repeated accross the country in marginal seats who knows how we have foisted upon us as government against the wishes of the country's overall electorate.

Sounds like ITV is trying to report the election American style, and wanting to be the first to 'call' each constituency result.

Personally I never by choice watch ITV news. The BBC is streets ahead for quality. Right now I'm watching Paxman savaging Falconer ... ITV can't touch that.

Wow, just watched Mr Keys (whose son was killed in Iraq) who was standing against Tony in Sedgefield give his speech and boy did he make Tony look uncomfortable. All credit to Mr Keys as he was dignified and calm in what must be very difficult circumstances for him.

Id rather have a monkey in charge of the country to be honest.

The British public really are utterley stupid they have given Bliar their support for every thing he has done, now he can crowe and do a cheesy smile and claim his actions were with integrity, and the British public support his actions.

Britain has once again let me down with its total stupidness in the polls people vote for the sake of it for rubbish, and now another period of tax, increased council tax, more tax on petrol, not forgetting tax, fabricated figures, fabrication and fabricated reports, more wars wasting money, worse public services (with fabricated figures showing them improving because they hide the truth), boast of a great economy (in which the bubble is so close to bursting, how long can a giant warehouse with declining manufacturing which kills its biggest assett small businesses with tax and bueararacy have a good economy paid for by credit cards)

Well, 37% of 60% have given him their support, which is only 22% of the electorate. 78% of the electorate didn't give him their support, so don't blame us.

If you think it's absurd that we get the grinning chimp back with a tiny minority of the vote but a workable majority in the Commons, join the Electoral Reform Society. I'm going to.

Still Labour round here, of course, but the majority was more than halved. Well done George Galloway, though, and the Lib Dems did OK too, not blisteringly well though, but the system's stacked against them.

Exactly. the only mandate that can come from 05/05/05 election is in actual fact a turning point in democracy.

The majority shall impose its will on the minority for sure is no longer a valid statement.

The foundation of all democracies worldwide now can look at GB as a democracy that stands for the minority shall (by default) impose its will on the majority.

Because of this very fact parliament should be disolved immedietly, a PR interim government should be instated while the country decides on a viable political reform.

If people don't vote they are letting others decide for them......

They are not a silent majority with ideals and goals better than others...

Most of them are lazy (not just physically but mentally as well) or at best just not interested.

In effect those that don't vote are willing to accept what ever the outcome is. They are letting those that vote decide for them and the fact they have done nothing to the contrary means they support the outcome :D

No way. the will of the people has been decisive, accept it. The system as it stands is fine. The majority has won. Yes, I would have said the same if the verdict was otherwise.

Nurse! The screens!

Hardly decisive when you're outvoted by people who couldn't be bothered to vote, really. Hardly magnificent when your share of the vote is less than 2% above where it was in the magnificent victory of 1992, when the turnout was far higher*.

Moving on, the number of rebels (58 who opposed the last government in at least two of the four key rebellions**) is big enough that only about half have to rebel to defeat the government (assuming all opposition parties oppose). Add in the disquiet expressed by many elected Labour MPs after actually talking to people for once and it's going to be a bit more tricky to push through the public service privatisation and civil liberties demolition (sorry, 'progressive New Labour programme').

* 1992 34.4% of 77.7% turnout, 11,560,484 votes
2005 36.3% of 60.2% turnout, 9,486,104 votes

Difference of over 2 million votes, although not all results are in yet. Pointless fact - although the Tories have about 6.5m fewer people voting for them, the Lib Dems have the same number, about 6m.

** Tuition fees, foundation hospitals, Iraq and 2005 anti-terror bill.

Let's put it this way:

1. The Lib Dem leader wanted this to be a referendum on the Iraq war, so he wasn't aiming for government, he failed on both counts. No doubt many of the Labour voters he captured will return to Labour at the subsequent parliamentary election in four years.

2. The Tory leader focused on abuse, negative campaigning, rather than debating the economy and social reform and clearly was not aiming for government.

3. Considering the above it is remarkable that Labour was able to achieve a majority of seats. Therefore, this is not a defeat for Labour it has enough of a majority to govern. This is an achievement a third successive Labour government. I think the lessons are now being learnt.

Damien 06-05-2005 12:22

They have clearly been hit, a loss of nearly 100 seats is quite damaging. Although i think a lot of votes may return to labour at the next election

Indeed, not for nothing is the PM called "Teflon Tony". Only he could get away with everything and still maintain a majority. If I was him, i'd be feeling extremely lucky to have what seats he has, rather than what he has lost.

I said most of them are lazy because they can't be bothered voting or thinking about who to vote for.

Some abstain for political reasons but most are either lazy or at best not interested....

Oh, *that's* democracy working, is it? I was wondering.

What I meant was that a victory with 36.2% of the vote (as it is now) with 39.5% not voting is hardly decisive, which was Gogogo's rather inflamed opinion. Democracy isn't working especially well if that's the case, and it's a worry for a lot of us.

Oo, Crawley's stayed Labour. By 37 votes.

Rather than solve the problems, they prefer to mix in some spin to make it look like the problem has gone away. For instance, to get A&E waiting times down, several hospitals have introduced a pre-A&E waiting area, but the time spent in there isn't recorded. In order to meet violent crime targets, Nottingham police will not record gun crimes unless the victim presses charges (something many are too scared to do!).
We still have a PM who lied to parliment, lied to the public, didn't ensure there was sufficient planning and resources when we went to war, cost many servicemen their lives because they have shoddy or non-existant equipment.

Anyway, my predictions for labour have all come true so far.

Must have been a few, I'd have thought. Be interesting to know how many postal ballots there were. Harlow is the other constituency still to declare on the mainland, btw, which is also expected to be extremely close, so watch for that one (I reckon it'll stay Labour, just). Similar sort of town: new, crap, near an airport, full of chavs.

Anyone geeky and bored, find the top ten most popular MPs by % of the vote. If anyone beats Gerry Adams' 70.7% I'd like to see it. There are a few in the 58-59 range but I can't find any over 60 apart from the bearded one.

Edit: Frank Field in Birkenhead got a whopping 65%.

I go to Harlow! I live in Epping forest (well, not IN the forest but a town near by). Anyway I go to college in Harlow, and in the last month the Tories (Robert Halfon) have had a very very strong campaign, posters and signs are everywhere. You cannot move without seeing another poster 'vote tory' written all over the town. By contrast I have hardly seen a labour poster although the MP has been around the town a lot, i have seen him at least twice. Harlow it-self looks very labour but it is surrounded by rich areas that affect the vote. So its very close. Anyway, they will declare tomorrow as a recount was halted as people were too tired.

As for epping forest, it now was a majority of over 30% for the conservatives. and almost 2000 votes for the BNP. We have the reserve of harlow as this town would be labour (properly, close though) but we are bundled in with chigwell, Loughton and a lot of rich areas so....

BNP are separate from NF - we had an NF candidate round our way, which must have gone down a storm in Hounslow. Both a bunch of Nazis of course.

Watching the line ups last night when the results where given out you could very easily spot the BNP candidate, they are the ones that look like they have either.

1> Just got out of jail.
2> Bought thier suit 10 years ago.
3> Have hate tatooed on thier knuckles.

etc etc.

You could also distinctly point out the candidates for the Monster Raving Loony Party :D

The NF in France (Front National) is actually really popular. It gained 18% of the popular vote in France in 2002 and won some rounds of the election. Scary really.

The FN also came second in the Presidential run-off between Chirac and Le Pen. The phrase of the day was 'Vote for the crook, not the Nazi'. Chirac got 81%.

Most NF people I saw have 'haet' tattooed on their knuckles. Literacy isn't their strong point.

Funnily enough, I have spotted two spelling mistakes on our BNP candidate leaflet which we received through the door

Well lets see what transpires shall we.

The sun is shining and I'm sick off the election..So I'm going to get on with life...

I'm sitting pretty at the mo..there is a shortfall of about 34,000 teachers across the country...very good news for a supply teacher. ;)

Not so good for our children however.

Where I live, North Belfast, has just been won by Dodds of the DUP with 45.6%. Kelly of SF was 2nd with 28.6%, Maginness of the SDLP was 3rd with 16.2 and Cobain of the UUP (who I voted for) was 4th with 7.1%.

The UUP are getting absolutely minced all over - the barking mad DUP and SF seem to be splitting it between them, which will help peace no end. Ian Paisley thinks he's in a war, senile old fool, wittering on about Gerry Adams' beard. Whenever I start feeling disillusioned and apathetic about mainstream British politics I reflect that it could be worse - I could have the clowns they have in NI to choose from instead of, for the most part, decent human beings.

They do things differently in Northern Ireland, Damien.

UUP had 6 seats in 2001, they now have 1 (out of 18). That's a pretty poor showing by anyone's reckoning - share of the vote down 11%.

So, what happened to all the money that Labour alledgedly spent on education.?
Don't tell me, most of it went on administration.

I had a Victor Melldrew moment the other day when I read a report about special time allowances for people with dyslexia taking GCSE & A level exams.
It also transpires that if a pupils pet has died the day before an exam they are to be allowed a 1% increase in marks and if it dies on the day of the exam a 2% adjustment is to be allowed. That is just plain stupid.

Well, I'm absolutely delighted :) !!

A great win, especially given it's after 8 years of gov't already.

A mid 60s majority is excellent by any standards; the only thing it pales against is the preposterously outrageously stupendous performance we got in the last election.

So, 4 more years of strong economy, reduction in crime, low unemployment, rising standards of living, standing up to terrorists and dictators, ethical foreign policy, better employee rights, etc etc etc.

I think the Tories'll kid themselves that they did a good job - but they didn't. This time they benefited from the fragmentation of votes between Labour, LD, Green, and the various spin off 'old Labour' candidates who'll close ranks next time to make sure there's no chance of a Tory government.

Blair'll carry on for another 2 years before handing over to Gordon Brown, who'll hit the next election at the height of his honeymoon period.

In the meantime, who'll be Tory leader? A 'typical of the membership' right winger, to follow on from the tremendous successes achieved by other 'typical of the membership' right wingers like, errr, Hague, Duncan-Smith, and Howard? A pro-Europe left winger who won't be able to get the support of the grass roots party? A dull policy wonk that won't inspire anyone? There are a few human beings in the party that I'd potentially at least consider voting for, e.g. Rifkind, Clarke, but I honestly can't see them holding the party together to form an effective campaign.

The one thing I'm really disappointed in though is Bethnal Green. Standing against a Jewish woman and manipulating a strong misogynistic anti-semitic vote. Made my stomach turn.

Listening to Gorgeous talking about 'all the people [Blair] had killed' in Iraq was the most sick making. Perhaps if Blair had 'killed' a few hundred thousand more he would've qualified for an arse licking while Gorgeous raved over Blair's courage, strength, and indefatigability, and wet himself about how many Palestinian children were now being given the name 'Tony' at birth. Then again, the extreme right has historically done well in the East End .....

It was joke showing my disgust at Galloway winning a seat. The joke bit is that he will follow in the footsteps of his good friend, and personal role model, Saddam Hussein. Saddam drained the marshes in Iraq, and fed political opponents through a wood chipper. Also, Saddam isn't know for this multi-cultural attitude to include Jews.

Not in brilliant taste, i'd admit...

Edit: Just saw Paxman's interview with Galloway on election night. Paxman is now on my christmas card list :) Its a shame he relented and did congratulate Galloway though in the end...

Did he? Looked like spitting sarcasm to me. Bloody silly question to ask, though, unless you were deliberately trying to stir up controversy.

Oh, and although it's been mentioned before, Gorgeous George met Saddam Hussein once, and famously saluted his indefatigability. Pretty reprehensible. Donald Rumsfeld, on the other hand, met him twice, and tried to flog him a pipeline deal with a U.S. company. Also pretty reprehensible. Damn George and you damn Rummy twice.

cookie thinks Galloway is an extreme right-winger? OK, whatever. And I personally consider it insulting to characterise Oona King as a 'Jewish woman', she's a highly effective and intelligent politician, who's perfectly capable of standing up for herself - that she failed to represent the views of her constituents is the decision that's cost her her seat.

Where's Blair stood up to terrorists? Inventing some and creating many more doesn't count as standing up, in my book. Stand up to George Bush and he might get some respect from me.

Well, there is a bit of a difference between making a pilgrimage to meet a vicious dictator and telling him how marvellous you think he is, and being sent there by your employer as part of your work and told to be nice to him. Also TBF people's perception of him in the early 80s was a bit different. He'd only been in power a couple of years.

She didn't do too badly, and she is an incumbant after all. I saw on the news today some muslims saying they were fed up with him coming down to mosques pretending to be muslim, and using them to have a pop at Blair over Iraq, and that sounds pretty plausible to me. In that area I dare say they are plenty who shared Galloway's sentiments in running.

Stepping down, yep. I think, given the number of seats the Tories gained, he would have been well able to continue to command respect as leader of the opposition. I see nothing odd ab out him poniting out he will be in his late 60s by the time of the next election.

Quote:

Nope. The thing about slash and burn is that it's well known as an effective means of generating new, heathy growth. Pretty much what's been happening in the UK for the last 12 years, in fact. Or will you, like Blair and Brown, conveniently forget that many of their vaunted '50 quarters of consecutive growth' the UK has enjoyed were quarters administered by the Tories? Go on, do the maths. 50 divided by 4 is 12.5. That's 12 and a half years. Which means the first quarter in question was in 1993. Can you remember who lived in number 10 in 1993? ;)

A very long way to go, given that despite creating one of the most complex tax/benefit systems in the developed world, Labour has presided over a real-terms fall in household incomes in the last eight years.

Eh? The Lib Dem share of the vote, and number of seats in Parliament, has gone up (yet again). Can I ask, do you have any knowledge of history whatsoever? Do you know anything at all about the birth of the Party you support? Clearly not, because you are obviously of the opinion that successful political parties emerge from nowhere and storm into Government more or less immediately. The modern Liberal Democrat party has been around for less than 20 years.

When I was 11 years old, I took the 11 plus exam. According to my form teacher I failed by the smallest margin allowed. No account was taken of the fact that only five months before my father who was aged 31 was killed in a motorcycle accident. My mother who had a chronic heart condition from the age of 14 had been in hospital for 12 months and my dad was killed on the day she came home, she never saw him. She was very soon back in hospital and myself and my two younger brothers went into temporary care. Unfortunately this was in a town 5 miles from our home so although my brothers went into nursery/infant school, I was placed in a completely alien primary school for 5 months before returning to my own school just before the 11 plus exam.
You will forgive me if I have little or no patience with today's 'liberal, wishy washy, softly softly' approach, but I have had to get by with my basic common sense and my self belief. Anything I have, I worked for myself without any help from the state, that is why I have a passionate dislike of Labour's overweaning, "we know best" tax and waste, government.
