I am actually on one of these exchanges looked a good option for me but I don't think I would be able to get full speed due to the fact I'm just over the distant limit from the the exchange. Another thing I would have to consider is the cost of equipment. Also I'm on a 12month free ntl telephone line rental so not a good idea at the mo. I was bitten by adsl last year and the experiance not good, but things might have changed since then. I had my NTL boardband 4 years ago still got the orginal surfboard modem. On the whole the service as been very reliable. I'm not a heavy user but would like to take advantage of all the new high speed broadband services coming on line if I want to. The problem with the NTL allowances is that there are no NTL packages that take this into account. I don't mean I'll be streaming them 24/7 but it would be nice to be able to use these service and not worry about getting into trouble with NTL for a perfectly legal use of the service.

I also like to dip into foreign video streams ocassionally these can be anything up to 705kbs and more. This is what attracted me to broadband if this avenue is now being closed I may as well just go on the lowest speed and just use my connection for browsing. I am getting abit p'd off with accusations and crimalisation of large bandwidth users being illegal downloaders.

well as i pay 25quid for the 1.5 meg service i may as well stick with the 3meg service and see how it goes -moving soon so i will probably leech all i can for now at new improved speeds and then order it again -

hopefully be upgraded soon got my 1.5 upgrade a few days early as well

I can understand the 1gb per day/30gig cap on the 2mb connection, but to have the same Cap on the 3mb tier and for £12.00 more is quite frankly pathetic, what kind of thick C**t in NTl came up with these Cap ideas?

i personally will Downgrade to 2mb since 3mb holds almost no advanatges over the lower tier apart from the slight Upload/Dl speed increase, but then it will only take you 1 hour 50 mins to use up your daily allowance with this.
i downloaded the matrix online beta today and coming in at 1.6Gig thats screwed me for the next day and a half right? but of course if anyone goes over 1gig a day it means their a crimial right?????... neil???

Comon NTL, what the hell is wrong with you people..

There is no cap for 2mb & 3mb just a guideline..... The same as we have now..

1mb will be hard capped later in the year but not 2mb & 3mb........ Maybe this will change but at the moment you are moaning about nothing....

it still doesnt make sense having the same Daily "guideline" for the 2mb and 3mb tiers though, yes im moaning, Consider it a pre-moan to an impending Hard cap that will probably P**s alot of customers off (not that ntls CS hasnt already achieved that already).

Well the time to moan is when you KNOW the "impending" hard cap is really happening........

It avoids boring everybody with moans about something that is not (at the moment) planned and may never happen. :D

MatTman, are you sure you are faster now or is that a one-off?

Try this speedtest (choose the 3Mb option)

One way to check MatTman:

Go to http://192.168.100.1/ and use root:root as the user:password.

Then click on Operation Configuration. See what speed it says.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

There's one question I've not been able to find an answer to.

In December, Simon Duffy said that a new tier would be introduced after the upgrades - a 'new' 300k tier.

My question is this - if I go onto 1Mb, and the hard capping comes in, will this 'new' tier exist by then, and will I be able to downgrade to it?

I'm not asking can I go 'back' to 'my' old 300k, but could I go onto the 'new' 300k? :)

nate 07-03-2005 13:49

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

Now I know this is probably typical of me, and being an ex-ntl employee I should know how to decipher the gibberish that the company puts out to the public, but I am a little confused with the barrage of information that is out there at the moment concerning the speed upgrade.

I notice from this link that it is prominently mentioned that "Customers on the 750K package or 1.5MB package, will receive a FREE automatic upgrade to 2MB and 3MB."

So, if I am reading this right and not being a complete dunce, all being well (which I'm not counting on), sometime (as per usual schedules) between 12am and 6am March 8th, I should be able to reboot my SACM and have download speeds of 3mbps (or 2mbps if I was on 750k), right?
No need to call NTL, wrangle with the CS staff who know nothing of the upgrade etc?

Obviously I'm not counting on it happening bang on March 8th, what I really want to know is..Do I need to give NTL a decision on whether I want to upgrade or not, or will they just do it automatically?

Paul 07-03-2005 13:53

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

It should be automatic - and also should not need a CM re-boot.

Auto and I don't think many will get it first thing on the 8th

Quote:

ntl will be contacting existing customers and informing them of these upgrades.
It is important to note, that the majority of 750K and 1.5MB customers will be upgraded over the coming weeks. But some networks, in some areas need further upgrades, to ensure that all customers will eventually receive the speed upgrades though this might take some months.

Can't be the problem - I have a Terayon and have no probs with the upgrades...didn't with 1mb, and didn't with 1.5mb either.

On topic though - Glad that it's not going to be a Hard Cap...as i go over the limit now (some months...) and so a hard cap on it would mess my routine up

Cheers

It must be on the way according to the web based maintenance schedule:monkey:

Quote:

As part of the ongoing project to maintain and upgrade our Broadband network, there is a requirement to carry out work on components which may result in a loss of service for the duration of the work. The maintenance work for this week is as follows:

On the morning of Tuesday March 8th between midnight and 6am, broadband customers in Southampton, Bishopbriggs, Cwmbrwla, Oxford, Kempstone, Norwich, Salford, Dover, Folkestone, Lewisham, Baguley, York and Belfast may experience a loss of connection due to local work.

Additionally customers in all regions may be unable to access the ntlworld.com homepage or their personal ntlworld websites due to server upgrades, and may experience a 5 minute drop of connection due to local network load balancing.

On the morning of Wednesday March 9th between midnight and 6am, broadband customers in Woodborough, Wearside, Addlestone and Belfast may experience a loss of connection due to local work.

On the morning of Thursday March 10th between midnight and 6am, broadband customers in Portsmouth, Stoke, Southampton, Rutherglen, Hemel Hempstead, Stapleford, Woodborough, Rochdale, Withington and Belfast may experience a loss of connection due to local work.

And finally on the morning of Friday March 11th between midnight and 6am, broadband customers in Woodborough and Belfast may experience a loss of connection due to local work.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience these planned works may cause.
Oh and hello :D

Not entirely convinced that statement is true ....

Why would they only hard cap 1Meg users, doesn't make sense. My understanding is that Hard Capping is being looked at for ALL tiers.

It makes sense to me if they want a cheap capped tier and only want to limit users on the upper tiers who cause problems for other users.

Just got off the phone to a CS rep and he said for definate the speed increases will be going ahead as planned on the 17th March and not the 8th. He also said that the speed increases were originally meant to take place in January and then February but it's all going to happen on the 17th of March. Next they will probably tell us its the 1st of April (before 12 noon):)

Now then - just to be clear - the information does not say the upgrades will be 8th March. It says it will be available to new customers from the 8th. Existing customers will be upgraded in March is all the documentation says. :)

Yes, exactly. :)

Although, hopefully, if we go by what happened the last time there was an upgrade, most people should be done (those on 750k and 1.5mb) tomorrow.

Looking at this, by my reckoning, those listed for overnight maintenance will be the ones that need network upgrades.

I wonder when we'll get our 300k upgrade page on ntlworld?

they might be doing network upgrading over the next few days but they could hold off on sending the new config files down the line which means our speeds wont change.

Alternatively what they're doing over the next few nights might be sending config files down the wire to all 1,000,000 broadband STBs and CMs in which case we'll be on the new speeds by the weekend?

What is the upload speed on NTL 300K service. please?

just looking round at the competition becasue i can't cope with the new tiny cap that will be on the "upgraded" service.

Can anyone suggest a decent, cheap alternative without OTT limits please? I know most companies are increasing their speeds so NTL 300K is looking very expensive now.

The current 300K has a 64K upload, this will increase to 100K with the 1meg download we believe.

I reckon you should stick around and wait to see what hard caps will be imposed when, coz NTL aren't that stupid - they know they have to compete, they will try to get to upgrade to 25 quid a month rather lose you I'm sure. And the cheap ADSL deals are 1 PC USB only, don't forget to compare with Ethernet based ADSL router ISPs.

The moment NTL actually say something official about this, they'll be getting a phonecall from me.

After all - specifics don't seem to matter.

Hell i don't even care what they will do to the service, i'v been with ntl (b4 it was ntl) for nearly 7 years and have hardly had a gripe about them.

I'm happy with service.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

I have had netmeter for some time & have had the 1GB/day alarm set, although it has seldom gone off. For web-serfing and some on-line gaming , the usage usually comes in well under the 3GB limit for the new 1Mbit service. Listening to web-radio for hours at a time does use a fair bit though & could easily push over 3GB. Occasionally i DL some software & would blow the 3GB limit out of the water.

Currently I'm on 750kbps & while the low end tier would largely meet my needs, will be staying on the mid-tier to avoid those occasional exceedances.

I'd just like to say that my NTL connection has been really reliable since installed several years ago (could it be 5 :O ) so I'm a happy customer.

DarkO 07-03-2005 18:31

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

Exact same here, had my ntl 1.5mb (was 1mb) connection for just over 2 years now and it has never gone down. I for one shall be staying. I play Counter Strike on PC a fare amount and my ping times are on a large scale always the lowest in the server. Generally 20mls and below providing it is a good server, even below 10mls at times.

Does anyone know if having ur ntl bb provided through a stb rather than a sacm is worse? just out of curiosity.

I've had it through both and it seems exactly the same, although my upstream is faster with a SACM. I got about 11KB/s with my STB and 14KB/s with my SACM. Not sure why that was...

(I should add that's on 750k)

Hopefully I will be upgraded tonight between 12am and 6am to 2mbit.

Last time, it happened at 1am, the 600k to 750k upgrade in the Baguley area (Manchestah!) :D

My STB (then a Pace 2000, now a Samsung :p: ) reset on its own and after the reset, I recieved the new speed.

I've got a Pace box and a TiVo. Other TiVo owners who've had their Pace swapped for a Samsung STB are having quite a few problems getting the two to work together.

Bearing this in mind, can I ask NTL for a SACM and keep the Pace?

Cheers

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

Not wanting to sound ungrateful, but how about if i don't want the free upgrade ? I'm happy enough with my 1.5 mb service as i can happily do what i do on the net without being 'capped'. If i were to got onto 3 mb with a 1 gb daily allowance, i will use that up by 2 pm :dozey:

Also, if i have no choice and i do go over my limit, what happens ? does my speed revert to a lower level or do i get charged the extra ? Another thing, is it a 1 gb transfer rate thats monitored daily or do they look at it at the end of the month / billing period ? If it was done at the end of the month that may not be so bad for some users, but if it's daily it could be a pain in the a$$

Your 1.5MB service is already capped at 1GB/day it's a soft cap and sounds like they'll keep it soft-capped once these upgrades go through.

Well personally i think that the cap when it comes into effect should be what the speed is your subscribed to, unless your under 1meg.

ie: 1meg= 1gb daily
2meg= 2gb daily
3meg= 3gb daily

that's like saying there would be no cap at all though, since we would technically be unable to go over the limit!:Yikes:

and even on 300k i've been over the 1gb a day limit - the world of warcraft beta took just over 24 hours to download, and weighed in at 2.4 gb. however, if i averaged out all of the time i spent playing WoW afterwards my average traffic for the month considerably dropped :)

As in a precise time?!

I doubt you'll get that.

"From 8th March"....and I very much doubt everywhere would be done at the same time. The last upgrades were spread out quite a bit over some areas.

ah, i think i misunderstood. i thought he meant that we should be allowed to download as much as our connection speed could handle.

i understand now, are you trying to say we should get our connection speed (in megabits), multiplied by 8, then 1000 to get the limit for the day? that wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

another idea i'm not opposed to is overnight/off-peak allowances. something like the entire current monthly allowance again, available from 12 midnight-7am. that would rock! :)

Off Topic: an aussie ISP, iiNet, just started plans which put ntl's upgrades to shame in my opinion:

see the news article here:
http://whirlpool.net.au/article.cfm/1433

and the current (upgraded) plans:

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=15&s=2

i could go for 8mbit, if i got the 80 gb a month plan for around £40!
maybe i'll have to move to australia.

I'm really really annnoyed with NTL for this.
I'd love to jump to 1mb from my 300k's but this Cap is ridiculous. Im currently monitoring my bandwidth use and its going to clearly be over.
What do you think happens if say you were 4gb over instead of the allowed 3gb per month ?

Like it says, the 8th is when new customers placing orders will be offered the new speeds (in fact, I believe the new speeds is all they will be offered).

But, if hard caps are going to be introduced..

How can they implement these without major TOS changes, which would involve informing all customers before the change and giving them the option of a "getout" clause if they don't agree with them (thus possibly losing thousands of customers who are still inside their initial 12 month contract)

I lost my broadband connection for about 15 minutes at just after half-past 12 (I'm near Lichfield, about 15 miles north of Birmingham).

First time in ages. Could be coincidence.

No increase in download times for me, but then again, I'm currently on a 300k connection so will have to ask for the upgrade.

Should I or shouldn't I?
